Visual replenishment methods in manufacturing industry and suggestion for a decision tool

Eriksson, Stefan January 2013 (has links)
In almost all supply chains, materials need to be stored or buffered, implying that manufacturing companies need effective replenishment methods. However, this is challenging, since companies must balance inventory costs and customer service in complex and different situations. Therefore, it is important to choose replenishment methods carefully. One well-known and widespread method is Material Requirements Planning (MRP). But the method has problems, such as regarding volume flexibility. There are other methods, but the literature lacks case studies and detailed descriptions and analysis of them, especially for visually oriented methods. Therefore, it is important to explore different methods for materials supply. The purpose of this study is to analyze the application of visually oriented replenishment methods in manufacturing industry and further to design a tentative decision tool for selecting methods. The research aims to provide some answers to three key questions. The first research question concerns general factors that are important for evaluating how effective replenishment methods are. From the literature review, different factors emerged such as product characteristics (fit in the Kraljic matrix, volume issues, size, etc.); information, trust, and geographical proximity between supplier and customer; and different logistics goals (delivery service elements, tied-up capital, use of resources, inventory accuracy). It is also import to include the basic principles methods are related to. The factors were summarized in an analysis model, which is structured with three main areas (planning environment/conditions, basic principles, and effects). The model is used to analyze four case studies. The second research question focuses on the characteristics for visually orientedreplenishment methods. Examples of characteristics are: easy to understand and operate, offers uncomplicated flows, substantially applicable for noncritical and leverage parts with high yearly requirement and fairly even consumption, provides potential for reduced errors in stores/flows, potential for providing high delivery service and low levels of tied-up capital and resource utilization. The third research question focuses on what a tentative decision tool for selecting replenishment methods might look like, based on the factors that emerged from the other research questions and studies by others. In order to achieve an efficient materials supply, companies need to consider these factors when selecting replenishment methods. The decision tool consists of different steps, considering aspects of the planning environment/conditions in relation to the product and the supplier. The importance of the companies’ goals/motives for materials supply must also be assessed. The output from the decision tool is appropriate replenishment methods. /
QC 20130603

Achieving a strategically aligned project portfolio : A case study on the Project Portfolio Management activities of selecting projects and allocating resources in a matrix organisation / Att uppnå en strategiskt anpassad projektportfölj : En fallstudie om PPM-aktiviteterna gällandeval av projekt och resursallokering i en matrisorganisation

Lundell, Fredrik, Roxlin, Victor January 2021 (has links)
Project portfolio management (PPM) is considered a central part for achieving intended strategies for organisations. However, only a percentage of strategies are actually realised, and whilst much previous research has focused on the formulation of strategies, less has been directed towards the realisation. To gain further understanding of how PPM can contribute to realising strategies, this thesis studied the PPM activities of selecting projects and allocating resources, and related challenges when trying to achieve a strategically aligned project portfolio in a matrix organisation. A qualitative case study was performed at a pharmaceutical production company in Stockholm referred to as Medex. An abductive research approach was used, and the data was thematically analysed whilst striving to achieve triangulation. The study was divided into a pre-study and a main study consisting of a total of 15 semi-structured interviews with participants at different positions within the organisation, in parallel to the collection of secondary data from Medex’s intranet. The study indicate that it is a challenge for a matrix organisation to align projects to strategy through project objectives, and that it is rather project values’ strong connection to strategy that provide a clear link between projects and strategy. It further suggests that using project value for linking projects to strategy can increase the understanding of the motivation of project priorities, as well as creating a foundation for determining if the allocation of resources is oriented towards strategy. Furthermore, the study demonstrates the challenge and necessity for top management to base their decisions on sufficient and reliable information. Moreover, the selection of projects must be performed in accordance with available resource capacity, which highlights the need for strong connections between short-, medium- and long-term resource allocation. Furthermore, the study emphasises the need for a structured way of evaluating PPM processes to improve and address associated challenges. Additionally, the high competition between resources in a matrix organisation is depicted and the study indicates that a strong focus on profits can limit the possibility of achieving a strategically aligned project portfolio. While the study is based on a single case, the findings can be regarded as transferable, at varying extents, to other companies of similar size and organisational structure as well.

Produktutveckling av skalkonstruktion för 3-axiellt styrt maskinstativ / Product development of shell structure for 3-axially driven machine frame

Nordborg, Tobias, Lyrbo, Alexander January 2016 (has links)
This thesis covers the product development of a multi-axial driven machine frame, which at a later stage will be intended to be used in additive manufacturing. The work that has been performed has led to concept development, material selection and manufacturing of a shell construction for a 3-axially driven machine construction. Tests and simulations have been done to verify if the machine design can be used by the specifications set by the host company. The construction was well within its tolerance of 100 microns at room temperature but showed some error margins at the operating temperature of 600 degrees Celsius. The results obtained have been analyzed in order to provide further suggestions for improvement of the structure when there still remain implications in ensuring the tolerances at operating temperature.

Método de seleção de ações de melhoria: alcançando os objetivos estratégicos no Processo de Desenvolvimento de Produtos por meio do Gerenciamento de Processos de Negócio / Method of improvement actions selection: reaching the strategic objectives in the New Product Development through Business Process Management

Fernandes, Sânia da Costa 18 January 2017 (has links)
The Business Process Management (BPM) is a structured approach that supports companies to improve their core processes, among which stands out the new product development (NPD). However, the literature is scarce of a systemic orientation to guide the selection of improvement actions for NPD in order to consider the strategic objectives of the process. Usually the focus of actions is only on overcoming shortcomings relative to the current situation. The aim of this research is to develop a method of selecting improvement actions for NPD that considers both the diagnosis of the current situation and the future situation desired for the process. The methodological approach called Design Research Methodology (DRM) is used to drive the development of the research, and two case studies were applied to evaluate the application of the method. It consists of four stages, which are the definition of the strategic objectives, the analysis of the problems that occur in NPD, the evaluation of improvement actions, and the prioritization of them in accordance with the time, the complexity of the actions and the resources involved to implement them. This proposal also uses the NPD good practices to define the improvement actions, and applies the roadmapping for mapping, selecting and prioritizing the actions. The novelty of the method is the integration of the NPD\'s strategic objectives into improvement programs, extending the traditional improvement model associated with the BPM approach. The results of the application of the method indicate that it is a stimulus for the companies to reach the strategic alignment in the PDP and to apply new managerial and technical practices in order to improve the performance of the process.

The modern mutual funds performance research on Taiwan's open - end common stock mutual funds

Chan, Yen-Chang Unknown Date (has links)
Mutual Funds Investment will be very popular! While the professional institutionalist's participation being promoted, domestic stock market environment has beenchanged structurally. In the future, accompanied by several reasons such us the_maturationof stock market, dramatic increasing in listed company numbers and more complex correlation in international financial markets, the age stressing on professional financial adversary will come. "Professional financial investment and adversary" will substitute for"Self-adversary" investment. Therefore, measuring the mutual fund's performance is the mailmotivation of my study', and the insight in selectivity ability and market timing ability will bethe subject for further research. The research model is based on the Lee-Rahman's modified model (1990), that is, the model structure was first built by Treynor & Mazuy (1966), improved by Jensen in Timingability measurement, and then revised by Bhattacharya & Pfleiderer (1983), and throughout structured by solving the "heteroscedasticity" in error terms of regressions finally Therefore, the better integral research model on measuring selectivity ability a timing abilityhas been accomplished. Meanwhile, we also use three traditional performance measure(Treynor, Sharpe & Jensen index) to be the general performance research. Empirical results show that (1)By measuring the general performance of mutual funds, we know that about 60%-70% funds managers beat market at each research period, and there exists consistency of fund's performance ranking among those three measures. (2) By using Lee-Rahman modified model (1990), we got three conclusions. First, for those funds consist of selectivity and timing ability, there exists consistency. In bull market period, timing ability of most funds performed better generally, and new funds had better performance. (3) Integral comparative conclusions have four results. First, no matter what measures being used, empirical results confirm stability and consistency in performance ranking. Second, significant timing ability is not the determinate factor of significant performance, significant selectivity ability plays the determinate role. Third, in Taiwan, bottom-up investment strategy gradually substitutes for top-down investment strategy. Finally, new mutual funds investment co. had outperformed old mutual funds investment institutions.

Recruitment and Selection : The way of finding future talented leaders

Feichtinger, Benjamin, Hörold, Christian January 2015 (has links)
Hiring the wrong leader can have disastrous effects on the productivity, moral, time and budget of an organization. In fact, a gap of leaders will arise in the next years, which makes it necessary to know and use the right strategies for attracting and selecting the appropriate future leaders who have the ability to successfully lead a company. Therefore, recruiting and selecting the right leaders is an important challenge for all organizations worldwide. How can they find, attract and choose people to become leaders? To answer this question, this Thesis looks at the whole process of hiring future leaders for organizations. First, we want to determine what is necessary to be successful in a leadership position in an organization. Second, we figured out what kind of recruitment strategies can be used in order to attract and find leaders, and third, we aim at showing which methods companies can employ to select the best fitting candidate for their vacant leadership position. In order to find answers to these questions, we have conducted interviews with seven leaders from different industry sectors, who shared their experience about leadership and the way of finding, attracting and selecting talented people who can become future leaders. Moreover, we conducted a questionnaire that has been handed out to students who might be potential leaders of the future. To ensure the meaningfulness of the study, we asked students from different faculties in 21 countries. The reason of the mixture of different sources is to acquire a broader insight into how the recruitment and selection of leaders takes place, with the aim of creating a representative picture.
