Performance Self-Appraisal Calibration of ESL Students on a Proficiency Reading Test

Petersen, Jodi Mikolajcik 01 April 2018 (has links)
Self-assessment as a placement measure or accurate assessment of skill has been scrutinized in previous research. Findings have shown a general human tendency towards overconfidence in performance (Kruger & Dunning, 1999). This study looks at performance self-appraisals in an ESL population, with participants from varying cultural backgrounds. Performance self-appraisal calibration is a measure of the relationship between an examinee's perceived skill (or confidence) and their actual skill (or ability) on a given exam item (Phakiti, 2016). Being well-calibrated is an indication that test takers know their strengths and weaknesses and thus the difference between confidence and ability is minimal, whereas poorly calibrated examinees may be oblivious to their weaknesses. While some research has explored self-appraisal calibration in first language (Hassmén & Hunt, 1994; Gutierrez & Schraw, 2015; Stankov & Lee, 2014) and foreign language contexts (Bastola, 2016; Phakiti, 2016), the language research has been limited to the performance of native language speakers on norm-referenced tests. It still needs to be determined how test takers would perform on a criterion-referenced exam with items of differing difficulty parameters administered to examinees from different language backgrounds. To that end, a proficiency-based criterion-referenced reading comprehension test was administered to 96 ESL students with 8 different language backgrounds. To measure confidence, a pre- and post-test questionnaire was administered in addition to a confidence slider bar that was embedded into each test item. We investigated correlations between cultural background and item difficulty on the students' self-appraisal calibrations. Our results showed that ESL students were overconfident in their self-calibrations, and their overconfidence was more pronounced as item difficulty increased. There were significant differences based on native language background. Implications will be discussed.

Subjectively estimated vs. objectively measured adaptation to driving simulators – Effects of age, driving experience, and previous simulator adaptation

Brandtner, Annika, Liebherr, Magnus, Schweig, Stephan, Maas, Niko, Schramm, Dieter, Brand, Matthias 08 September 2021 (has links)
Objective The present study aims to investigate whether drivers’ age and their experience with driving simulators could explain differences between a subjective estimation of system adaptation and a respective objective systematic measurement. Background Assessing valid measurements in driving simulators causes concern because driving simulators are not yet as realistic as real on-road driving scenarios. Common methods like pre-defined training sessions and self-appraisals of simulator adaptation might therefore be insufficient to ensure actual valid data. Hence, influential variables on this discrepancy are investigated. Method In total, N = 203 drivers participated in a training session and a subsequent testing session in a close-to-production driving simulator. Subjective adaptation was estimated by the drivers and an objective adaptation value was gathered on the basis of driving accuracy. The discrepancy between these two measures was calculated and related to age, self-reported driving experience and occurrence of previous adaptation. Results Subjective adaptation was significantly faster than objective adaptation but neither drivers’ age, experience, nor previous adaptation could explain this discrepancy. Discussion Results indicate that younger and older drivers likewise underestimate the time needed for adaptation. Measuring a subjective point of adaptation seems to be an insufficient measure to ensure simulator validity when assessing both older and younger drivers.

Motivační funkce školního hodnocení / Motivational function of educational evaluation

Kubíková, Jitka January 2013 (has links)
This thesis is focusing on school evaluation from the point of view of its specifics and functionality in regard to its motivation purpose. The findings regarding evaluation are shown in an independent chapter showing the positive and negative aspects of forms of assessment in practical application. Following chapter dealing with motivation describes needs in relation to school activities as well as brief explanation of causal attribution. More attention is paid to the achievement motivation, especially to characteristics of needs for achievement in relation to pupils' responses to mental stress in task situations. There are briefly mentioned some of the newer motivational theories and their application in school showing the possible modification of outer motivation to autonomy. Widely processed are methods and aspects of evaluation that support motivation and provide pupils with examples for self- assessment. Qualitative research is focused on assessment processes leading to positive motivation. Concluding proposition summarizes several recommendations for teacher in the role of evaluator. Keywords School evaluation, motivation, achievement motivation, self-appraisal.

O*NET or NOT? Adequacy of the O*NET system's rater and format choices

Hollander, Eran 17 December 2001 (has links)
The O*NET was built to replace the Dictionary of Occupational Titles (DOT) and form a highly accessible, on-line (through the World Wide Web), common language occupational information center (Dye & Silver, 1999). This study tested the relevance of the self-rating choice and unconventional BARS format to be used by the O*NET system for occupational ratings. In addition, a new rating scale format named NBADS, was tested for improved ratings. Fifty three Incumbent raters in two occupations (Graduate teaching assistants and Secretaries) and 87 laypeople raters who have never worked in these occupations, rated 21 item-pairs (Importance and Level type questions) picked randomly from the 52 items on the original O*NET Ability questionnaire. Participants rated each of the 21 item-pairs three times, with the Level question being presented in the O*NET BARS, a Likert GRS and the NBADS formats; The importance type question was always rated using a 1-5 Likert scale. Hypothesis 1a was supported, showing a significant leniency bias across formats for self-ratings. Hypothesis 1b was mostly supported, failing to show significant leniency, elevation error or interrater agreement improvement over laypeople ratings; only the overall-error measure showed a significant improvement for incumbent raters. Hypothesis 2 was not supported, failing to show that the GRS format had any improvement on leniency, accuracy or interrater agreement over the O*NET BARS format. Hypothesis 3a was supported, showing significant leniency reduction, accuracy error reduction and higher interrater agreement using the NBADS format over the GRS format. In a similar sense, hypothesis 3b was partially supported, showing reduction in leniency effect and higher agreement using the NBADS format over the O*NET BARS format. Finally, hypothesis 4 was mostly supported, showing hardly any significant differences in the ratings of the Importance type question across the three format sessions, strengthening the idea that no other interfering variables have caused the format sessions' differences. Implications of the results are discussed. / Master of Science

The Effect Of Apologetic Error Messages And Mood States On Computer Users

Akgun, Mahir 01 June 2007 (has links) (PDF)
The main aim of this study, in which 310 university students participated, is to investigate whether or not computer interfaces offering human-like apologetic error messages influence users&rsquo / self-appraisals of performances and actual performances in the computerized environment. For the study, an online instructional material which includes deliberate design problems leading to user frustration was developed. The study is comprised of three phases. In the first phase, based on the CCSARP (Cross-Cultural Study of Speech Act Realization Patterns) coding manual and the studies conducted with the framework provided by the manual, apology strategy sequences were elicited from Turkish participants. Two of these apology strategy sequences were selected for producing two apology error messages. In addition to these apology messages, one plain computer error message was also developed for experimental control. The second phase of the study was conducted to determine whether these three messages were perceived as apologies. It was found out that the two apology messages were perceived as apologies and the plain computer message was not perceived as an apology. In the third phase these three messages were used to investigate the relationship between mood, self-appraisal of performance and actual performance after the transmission of the apologetic error messages. The findings of this study show that the frequencies of apology strategies preferred in the computerized environment are similar with those utilized in the social context. Statistical analyses also reveal that the influence of apology messages on self-appraisal of performance depends on participants&rsquo / mood state and the contents of the apology messages.

Dailės terapijos įtaka 5-6 klasių mokinių, turinčių specialiųjų ugdymo(si) poreikių, savęs vertinimui / Art therapy's influence on 5-6th form and the self-esteem of the students with special needs

Grinkevičienė, Ilona 07 September 2010 (has links)
Darbe remiamasi metodiniais teoriniais G.Allport, B.G.Ananjev‘o, E.Aronson‘o, M.Betensky, L.I.Božovič, U.Džeims‘o, A.Maslow, D.G.Myers, V.V.Stolin‘o savęs vertinimo ir Dž.Allan‘o, R.Buckland, S.Ignatjev‘o, K.G.Jung‘o, M.Kiseliov‘os, A.Kopytin‘o, L.Lebedev‘os, A.Piličiausko, N.O.Sučkov‘os ir A.Vaitkevičienės dailės terapijos pagrindais. The analysis of the scientific literature of the self-esteem elicited a fact that physical and emotional changes at the age of adolescence cause the variety of psycological problems including the self-appraisal‘s disbalance. The sense of the self-appraisal at that period of life is not completely recognised and is quite controversial. It is conditioned by the self-evaluating his/her success being a student and the evaluation of their results and abilities by their associates.( the assessment made by adults and by children of his/her own age ) Seeing that teenagers spend most time in a group, the social status in the class plays the major role in the self-assesment. For these reasons the students with special needs, that permanently experience learning problems and feel socially isolated, often evaluate themselves unequal or have the low sense of self-esteem. To find how the art therapy affects the self-esteem of the students with special needs in year 5-6 there was carried out the qualitative and quantitative research. During the quantitative research fulfilled with the students in year 5-6 there were measured the averages of a global and... [to full text]
