Orientador: Matheus Nogueira Schwartzmann / Banca: Raíssa Medici de Oliveira / Banca: Mariana Luz Pessoa de Barros / Banca: Naiá Sadi Câmara / Banca: Jean Cristtus Portela / Resumo: A compreensão dos mitos de uma sociedade configura-se como um dos modos mais legítimos para se decifrar sua realidade cultural, já que, por estarem ligados à tradição oral e escrita, evidenciam determinadas práticas sociais e culturais. Isso ocorre porque a natureza oral das narrativas míticas, especialmente das narrativas indígenas que são objeto desta pesquisa, demonstra aspectos do contexto local e de simbologias construídas ao longo de uma tradição que instaura uma realidade mítica. Esta escapa de uma explicação lógica dos fenômenos naturais, da história do povo, de sua organização social, de suas práticas ritualísticas, rompendo, muitas vezes, com a figuratividade de um mundo natural puramente humano como o conhecemos. A partir dessas considerações, propomo-nos a refletir sobre a construção dos sentidos no mito Makunaima por meio de uma análise comparativa de três narrativas: a "Árvore da vida", relatada por informantes das comunidades indígenas Ubaru (RR), etnia Taurepang, e São Jorge (RR), etnia Makuxi, e a "A árvore do mundo e a grande enchente", um dos textos do segundo volume de Mitos e Lendas dos Índios Taulepangue e Arekuná de Theodor Koch-Grünberg (1989). Ambas tratam do mito Makunaima, um dos mais conhecidos nas comunidades indígenas de Roraima, que descreve a origem mítica do peixe, dos rios, da oração, do machado e do Monte sagrado que dá nome ao estado de Roraima. Para a análise dos mitos mencionados, valemo-nos dos pressupostos teórico-metodológico da Semiót... (Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo) / Résumé: La compréhension des mythes d'une société est l'un des moyens les plus légitimes de déchiffrer leur réalité culturelle car, liés à la tradition orale, ils témoignent et systématisent certaines pratiques sociales et culturelles. En effet, la nature orale des récits mythiques, en particulier des récits autochtones faisant l'objet de cette recherche, met en évidence des aspects du contexte local et des symbologies construites selon une tradition qui fonde une réalité mythique. Cela échappe à une explication logique des phénomènes naturels, de l'histoire des peuples, de leur organisation sociale, de leurs pratiques rituelles, rompant souvent avec la figuration d'un monde naturel purement humain tel que nous le connaissons. À partir de ces considérations, nous proposons de réfléchir à la construction des sens dans le mythe Makunaima, à travers une analyse comparative de deux récits: « l'Arbre de la vie », rapporté par les informateurs d'Ubaru (RR) et de São Jorge ( RR) et « L'arbre du monde et le grand déluge », l'un des textes du deuxième volume de Mythes et légendes des Indiens Taulepangue et Arekuna de Theodor Koch-Grünberg (1989). Tous deux traitent du mythe Makunaima, l'un des plus connus des communautés indigènes de Roraima, qui décrit l'origine mythique des poissons, des rivières, de la prière, de la hache et du mont sacré qui donne son nom à l'état de Roraima. Evolution of symbolic communication : an embodied perspectiveBrown, Jessica Erin January 2012 (has links)
This thesis investigates the emergence in human evolution of communication through symbols, or conventional, arbitrary signs. Previous work has argued that symbolic speech was preceded by communication through nonarbitrary signs, but how vocal symbolic communication arose out of this has not been extensively studied. Thus far, past research has emphasized the advantages of vocal symbols and pointed to communicative and evolutionary pressures that would have spurred their development. Based on semiotic principles, I examine emergence in terms of two factors underlying symbols: interpretation and conventionalization. I address the question with a consideration of embodied human experience – that is, accounting for the particular features that characterize human communication. This involves simultaneous expression through vocal and gestural modalities, each of which has distinct semiotic properties and serves distinct functions in language today. I examine research on emerging sign systems together with research on properties of human communication to address the question of symbol emergence in terms of the specific context of human evolution. I argue that, instead of in response to pressures for improved communication, symbolic vocalizations could have emerged through blind cultural processes out of the conditions of multimodal nonarbitrary communication in place prior to modern language. Vocalizations would have been interpreted as arbitrary by virtue of their semiotic profile relative to that of gesture, and arbitrary vocalizations could have become conventionalized via the communicative support of nonarbitrary gestures. This scenario avoids appealing to improbable evolutionary and psychological processes and provides a comprehensive and evolutionarily sound explanation for symbol emergence. I present experiments that test hypotheses stemming from this claim. I show that novel arbitrary vocal forms are interpreted and adopted as symbols even when these are uninformative and gesture is the primary mode of communication. I also present computational models that simulate multi-channel, heterosemiotic communication like that of arbitrary speech and nonarbitrary gesture. These demonstrate that information like that provided by gesture can enable the conventionalization of symbols across a population. The results from experiments and simulations together support the claim that symbolic communication could arise naturally from multimodal nonarbitrary communication, offering an explanation for symbol emergence more consistent with evolutionary principles than existing proposals.
