De Ira de Sêneca: tradução, introdução e notas / On Senecas wrath: translation, introduction and notes

Lima, Ricardo Antonio Fidelis de 26 November 2015 (has links)
O nosso trabalho consiste na tradução e no estudo do De Ira do filósofo estoico e político romano Lucio Anêu Sêneca. / Our dissertation consists in the translation and study of De Ira from the Stoic philosopher and Roman politician Lucious Annaeus Seneca. The book is addressed to his brother Novato who supposedly inquires him how to restrain this passion. Thus, in three books, the philosopher presents the genesis of that passion and the evils caused by it to finally introduce ways to extirpate it from the soul. The defense of the Stoicism\'s teachings explicitly echoes in several examples given by the philosopher when contrasted with other philosophical schools of the time. So wrath is treated as the most damaging passion among all human passions.

CVNCTA QVATIAM - Medeia abala estruturas. O teatro de Sêneca e sua permanência na cena contemporânea: tradução e estudo da recepção / CVNCTA QVATIAM - Medea shakes the elements

Freitas, Renata Cazarini de 19 June 2015 (has links)
Taking into account the concepts of the Reception Studies of Classics, this three-year long Masters Degree investigation centered on Seneca\'s Medea Latin tragedy, including its translation into Portuguese and a thoroughly analysis of rhetorical aspects, in order to identify elements which have proven themselves as permanent links into the Reception chain of Ancient theatre plays. This research took as mediating texts in this 20th century span transmission net William Shakespeare\'s repertory and Antonin Artaud\'s Cruelty Theatre, both of which have in some extent been appropriated by 20th century playwrights such as Heiner Müller, Sarah Kane and Ted Hughes, the three of them having gone back to Seneca before setting up their Medeamaterial, Phaedra\'s Love and Seneca\'s Oedipus plays, respectively, which also make up the corpora of this study.

Virtue Conquered by Fortune: Cato in Lucan's Pharsalia

Pribil, Nathaniel Brent 01 December 2017 (has links)
This thesis looks at how the Roman poet Lucan uses the character of Cato to elucidate his beliefs about Fortune and Stoicism. The traditional Stoic view of Fortune views it as a force for good that allows people to improve through hardship. Lucan portrays Fortune as a purely antagonistic force that actively seeks to harm the Roman people and corrupt even good individuals like Cato. Lucan's Fortune arranges events to place Cato in a situation where it is impossible to maintain his virtue. Rather than providing him an opportunity to improve in the civil war, Fortune makes it so that whatever choice Cato makes, he becomes guilty. Brutus' dialogue with Cato in Book 2 of Pharsalia illuminates the position that Cato is in. Brutus looks to Cato as the traditional Stoic exemplar that can forge a path for virtue in civil war. However, Cato admits that joining any side in the civil war would cause him to become guilty. Fortune's support of Caesar and its dominance over contemporary events has forced Cato into this situation. Cato's desert march in Book 9 continues to show Fortune's dominance over Cato by continually denying him opportunities to gain virtue for himself. Lucan's portrayal of Fortune shows his rejection of Stoic teaching about Fortune and the ultimate futility of trying to remain virtuous in a time of civil war.

The use of tort law in the protection of human rights : an alternative to human rights boards?

Spencer, Linda Charmaine 23 July 2007
It is an integral part of rights protection that "adequate" remedies exist. This thesis examines the present functioning of human rights legislations in Canada and articulates fundamental problems with the current Canadian regimes in the enforcement of rights against private actors. The possibility of using tort action as an alternative in the protection of human rights in Canada is then discussed, with particular attention given to the potential for increased damage awards and for wider grounds of prohibition of discriminatory practices.
The thesis revisits the Supreme Court of Canada decision in Bhadauria v. Seneca College and anaylzes the basis on which human rights legislation was seen as a creating barrier to a collateral tort action. In contrast with the decision in Bhadauria , the thesis concludes that the present state of tort law is capable of handling this new category of compensable damage. It is further suggested that the realities of human rights protection require reconsideration of alternatives to the present schemes in order to give effect to "adequate" remedies.
Drawing on the philosophy of A.J.M. Milne, the thesis addresses the role of judiciary as actively protecting the rights rather than simply enforcing what already exists.
Referring specifically to a nominate tort of discrimination, the thesis provides a framework for the consideration of such a tort, relying on a standard of care equivalent to "negligence" in which the private actor has failed to live up to a universal or "community" standard of reasonable behaviour.
In part, because any group can narrowly focus and prioritize issues and concerns that are of primary importance to them as a group, this "community" can not be a localized body. A well functioning "community", instead, is characterized as utilizing and applying universal standards and principles such the principle to fair treatment. This principle entails that there be a "sufficient connection" between the ground of distinction and and the treatment involved. These become the standard by which the private actor is to be judged.
