Scalable resilient overlay networks

Qazi, Sameer Hashmat, Electrical Engineering & Telecommunications, Faculty of Engineering, UNSW January 2009 (has links)
The Internet has scaled massively over the past 15 years to extend to billions of users. These users increasingly require extensive applications and capabilities from the Internet, such as Quality of Service (QoS) optimized paths between end hosts. When default Internet paths may not meet their requirements adequately, there is a need to facilitate the discovery of such QoS optimized paths. Fortunately, even though the route offered by the Internet may not work (to the required level of performance), often there exist alternate routes that do work. When the direct Internet path between two Internet hosts for instance is sub-optimal (according to specific user defined criterion), there is a possibility that the direct paths of both to a third host may not be suffering from the same problem owing to path disjointness. Overlay Networks facilitate the discovery of such composite alternate paths through third party hosts. To discover such alternate paths, overlay hosts regularly monitor both Internet path quality and choose better alternate paths via other hosts. Such measurements are costly and pose scalability problems for large overlay networks. This thesis asserts and shows that these overheads could be lowered substantially if the network layer path information between overlay hosts could be obtained, which facilitates selection of disjoint paths. This thesis further demonstrates that obtaining such network layer path information is very challenging. As opposed to the path monitoring which only requires cooperation of overlay hosts, disjoint path selection depends on the accuracy of information about the underlay, which is out of the domain of control of the overlay and so may contain inaccuracies. This thesis investigates how such information could be gleaned at different granularities for optimal tradeoffs between spatial and/or temporal methods for selection of alternate paths. The main contributions of this thesis are: (i) investigation of scalable techniques to facilitate alternate path computation using network layer path information; (ii) a review of the realistic performance gains achievable using such alternate paths; and (iii) investigation of techniques for revealing the presence of incorrect network layer path information, proposal of new techniques for its removal.

The evolution and erosion of a service-oriented architecture in enterprise software : A study of a service-oriented architecture and its transition to a microservice architecture / En Service-orienterad arkitekturs erosion och evolution

Karlsson, Eric January 2018 (has links)
In this thesis project, a company’s continuously evolved service-oriented software architecture was studied for signs of architectural erosion. The architecture has been continuously developed over some time and the company have experienced a reduction in architectural quality and felt that it no longer fulfilled its design goals and therefore decided to start working on a replacement architecture based on the microservice archi-tectural style. This thesis project therefore aimed to study how the current architectures quality have changed during its evolution, find the causes of these changes in quality, andestimate how the planned microservice migration will effect these changes in quality. This study was performed in three steps. First, a suite of suitable quality metrics where gathered based on the stated architectural design goals and what information can be ex-tracted from the history of the implemented architecture. A tool was developed to model the architecture and to gather the quality metrics from the current architecture and how ithas changed over one year’s worth of development and evolution. Secondly, the causes ofthese changes in architectural quality was investigated through developer interviews with a wide range of developers that had worked on the architecture and the web application that it provides the structure for. The interviews focused on the topics of architectural knowledge, what consideration is taken to its design during component development, maintenance of existing components and architecture, as well as questions regardingspecific components and anomalies. Thirdly and finally, the migration to a microserviceand its effects on the quality of the current architecture is estimated through performing microservice reengineering on the model used to evaluate the current architecture. The tools developed during this thesis allowed for an analysis of the architecture didshow an increase in consistency violations, structural problems and level the of coupling have substantially increased over the version history that the model tracked. It was discov-ered by the developer interviews that some of the causes of this erosion was due to among other reasons an abandonment of some architectural deign decisions, lack of architectural knowledge on certain topics, and none-optimal development conditions and priorities. The microservice reengineering showed how the migration could be used to improve themeasured quality metrics and that a migration alongside some other architectural erosionprevention and repair methods could create an architecture that are more modular and erosion tolerant.

Desenvolvimento de sistemas de automação da manufatura usando arquiteturas orientadas a serviço e sistemas multi-agentes

Peixoto, João Alvarez January 2012 (has links)
The industrial manufacturing requirements indicate a need for reconfiguration and reprogramming of process flow in order to meet changes in the product with the changing market requirements. These changes imply changes in the manufacturing process, which in many cases, means changing the layout, reprogram controllers, modify interfaces and couplings etc. The production lot sizes are getting smaller and the variety of products in the same line has increased. This makes the preparation time of manufacturing devices crucial factor in the formation of the final cost. Devices with more autonomy, able to manage themselves and allow a rapid exchange of features are to be desired in a manufacturing environment, where conventional systems with centralized scheduling, sequence defined in the central controller and array of features still fall short. Service orientation is a concept that proposes to decentralize the control and disposition of components in order to regroup virtually and form new devices with new features, optimizing investment, resource and production time. In this approach the devices start to act as agents of manufacturing, in a universe of multi-agents, who negotiate among themselves the process required, providing care for the product variation and having a greater number of features, which reduces the switching time processes. A case study of system-oriented services, under a multi-agent platform is proposed in this work, aiming to provide tools for performance analysis and potential of the concept.

Toward Customizable Multi-tenant SaaS Applications

January 2016 (has links)
abstract: Nowadays, Computing is so pervasive that it has become indeed the 5th utility (after water, electricity, gas, telephony) as Leonard Kleinrock once envisioned. Evolved from utility computing, cloud computing has emerged as a computing infrastructure that enables rapid delivery of computing resources as a utility in a dynamically scalable, virtualized manner. However, the current industrial cloud computing implementations promote segregation among different cloud providers, which leads to user lockdown because of prohibitive migration cost. On the other hand, Service-Orented Computing (SOC) including service-oriented architecture (SOA) and Web Services (WS) promote standardization and openness with its enabling standards and communication protocols. This thesis proposes a Service-Oriented Cloud Computing Architecture by combining the best attributes of the two paradigms to promote an open, interoperable environment for cloud computing development. Mutil-tenancy SaaS applicantions built on top of SOCCA have more flexibility and are not locked down by a certain platform. Tenants residing on a multi-tenant application appear to be the sole owner of the application and not aware of the existence of others. A multi-tenant SaaS application accommodates each tenant’s unique requirements by allowing tenant-level customization. A complex SaaS application that supports hundreds, even thousands of tenants could have hundreds of customization points with each of them providing multiple options, and this could result in a huge number of ways to customize the application. This dissertation also proposes innovative customization approaches, which studies similar tenants’ customization choices and each individual users behaviors, then provides guided semi-automated customization process for the future tenants. A semi-automated customization process could enable tenants to quickly implement the customization that best suits their business needs. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Computer Science 2016
