Anticancer drugs represent one of the classes of pharmaceuticals with the greatest potential to cause negative effects on the environment. Contamination of the environment with these drugs may occur from several sources, such as emissions from industry or direct disposal of pharmaceuticals in households, but the main source of cytostatic compounds in the environment occur through sewage emission or excreted fluids (feces and urine) of patients receiving treatment. In this study we analyzed the presence of the antineoplastic 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) and its quantification in the effluents originated from a large oncology hospital and in the local municipal wastewater system. We analyzed 10 samples obtained from a distinct collection site (A), from the effluents of the Barretos Cancer Hospital (HCB). Also, 5 samples were obtained from two different sites (B and C) in the effluent from the Sewage Treatment Plant in Barretos (ETEB), whose final destination is the stream known as Ribeirão Pitangueiras. Presence of 5FU was observed in concentrations ranging from 26.7 to 733 μg/L in all 10 samples of the wastewater originated at the HCB collected at site A. These results were far superior to those found in similar studies performed at other hospitals. The predicted concentrations of the cytostatic agent in the wastewater from HCB was calculated using parameters such as 5-FU consumption, water consumption and the fraction of drug excreted unmetabolized. We found a low correlation between the predicted concentrations and the measured concentrations. This low recovery rate may have occurred due to probable excretion of the drug occuring outside the hospital facilities, since the majority of the patients were ambulatory. Other possibilities are drug degradation due to instability of the molecule and loss of a portion of the drug adsorbed in suspended solid matter of the effluent. The possible impact of the emission of 5-FU to the ...

Optimization of anaerobic co-digestion of sewage sludge using bio-chemical substrates

Madondo, Nhlanganiso Ivan January 2018 (has links)
Submitted in fulfillment of the requirements of the degree of Masters of Engineering: Chemical Engineering, Durban University of Technology, Durban, South Africa, 2018. / The anaerobic process is increasingly becoming a subject for many as it reduces greenhouse gas emissions and recovers carbon dioxide energy as methane. Even though these benefits are attainable, proper control and design of the process variables has to be done in order to optimize the system productivity and improve stability. The aim of this research was to optimize methane and biogas yields on the anaerobic co-digestion of sewage sludge using bio-chemical substrates as co-substrates. The first objective was to find the bio-chemical substrate that will generate the highest biogas and methane yields. The anaerobic digestion of these substrates was operated using 6 L digesters at 37.5℃. The substrate which generated the highest biogas and methane yield in the first batch experiment was then used for the second batch test. The objective was to optimize the anaerobic conditions (substrate to inoculum ratio, co-substrate concentration and temperature) in-order to optimize the biogas and methane yields. The second batch test was achieved using the conventional One-Factor-At-A-Time (OFAT) and the Design of Experiment (DOE) methods. Final analysis showed that the bio-chemical substrates could be substrates of interest to biogas generators. Amongst the substrates tested in the first batch experiment glycerol (Oleo-Chemical Product waste) generated the highest methane and biogas yields of 0.71 and 0.93 L. (g volatile solids added)-1, respectively. It was believed that glycerol contains significant amount of other organic substances such as lipids that have higher energy content than the other bio-chemical substrates, thus generating larger biogas and methane yields. Moreover, digestion of sewage sludge alone produced biogas yields of 0.19 L /g VS and 0.33 L/g COD, and methane yields of 0.16 L/g VS and 0.28 L/g COD. Generally, co-digestion yields were higher than digestion yields of sewage alone. Using the OFAT method the results of the second batch test on glycerol demonstrated highest amounts of volatile solids (VS) reduction, chemical oxygen demand (COD) reduction, biogas yield and methane yield of 99.7%, 100%, 0.94 L (g VS added)-1 and 0.75 L (g VS added)-1 at a temperature, substrate to inoculum ratio and glycerol volume of 50℃, 1 (on VS basis) and 10 mL, respectively. Above 22 mL and substrate to inoculum ratio of 1, the process was inhibited. The DOE results suggested that the highest methane and biogas yields were 0.75 and 0.94 L (g VS added)-1, respectively. These results were similar to the OFAT results, thus the DOE software may be used to define the biogas and methane yields equations for glycerol. In conclusion, anaerobic co-digestion of bio-chemical substrates as co-substrates on sewage sludge was successfully applied to optimize methane and biogas yields. / M

The treatment of biodiesel wastewater using an integrated electrochemical and adsorption process

Myburgh, Dirk Petrus January 2018 (has links)
Thesis (Master of Engineering in Chemical Engineering)--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2018. / The production of biodiesel is an energy and water intensive process. The wastewater that is produced during this process is high in concentrations of COD, BOD, FOG and various other contaminants. Since it contains low levels of nutrients, it is difficult to degrade using natural processes such as conventional activated sludge wastewater treatment. The discharge of untreated biodiesel wastewater also raises serious environmental concern. It interferes when remediated with biological processes and results in additional costs during the production of biodiesel when penalties and fines are applied. Conventional treatment processes are not capable of treating contaminants and pollutants in biodiesel to satisfactory concentrations and hence advanced treatment processes are necessary. In this research, a lab scale integrated treatment process was used to investigate the successful reduction of contaminants, in particular COD, BOD and FOG. The integrated treatment process used in this study consisted of three consecutive steps; acidification, electrochemical oxidation and adsorption using chitosan as an adsorbent. The electrochemical oxidation process with IrO2-Ta2O5/Ti anodes was applied to treat biodiesel wastewater. Different operating conditions were tested to establish favourable conditions. The current density applied as well as the concentration of NaCl as the supporting electrolyte greatly affected the process. A NaCl concentration of 0.08M was deemed sufficient, whereas a current density of 1 mA/cm² showed superior performance compared to lower or higher current densities. Adsorption of pollutants in biodiesel wastewater was investigated using Chitosan as the adsorbent. Various chitosan concentrations, initial pH of the wastewater and repetitive adsorption stages were investigated. It was discovered that all three operating conditions greatly affect the performance of the process. The three consecutive adsorption stages using a chitosan concentration of 4.5 g/L at a pH of 2 resulted in the highest pollutant removal. It was observed that the integrated treatment process could reduce COD, BOD and FOG levels by 94%, 86% and 95% respectively. This concludes that the treated effluent complies with local industrial effluent discharge standards, which could be disposed safely without further treatment.

Evaluation of the physicochemical qualities and heavy metal regimes of the final effluents of some wastewater treatment facilties in Berlin, Alice and Bedford communities in the Eastern Cape, South Africa

Agoro, Mojeed Adedoyin January 2017 (has links)
Wastewater treatment facilities have been identified as potential source of surface water pollution worldwide. In this study, the physicochemical qualities and heavy metal (including Zinc, Cadmium, Iron, Lead and Copper) concentrations in the final effluents, as well as the reduction efficiencies of three municipal wastewater plants in the Eastern Cape, South Africa were evaluated from September 2015 to February 2016 using standard methods. Wastewater effluent and sludge samples were collected from the selected plants on monthly basis over a period of six months from September 2015 to February 2016. Standard analytical method (Atomic absorption spectroscopy [AAS]) was used to assess the concentration levels of heavy metals. The physicochemical parameters assessed include pH, Temperature, Total Dissolved Solid, Turbidity, Biochemical Oxygen Demand, Chemical Oxygen Demand, Alkalinity, Dissolved Oxygen, Free chlorine, Chloride, Sulphate, Phosphate, Ammonium and Electrical Conductivity. The results of the evaluation showed that temperature ranges from 19 to 36 °C, Electrical Conductivity from 60-1095 mS/m, Alkalinity from 2.6-20.9 mg/L, Nitrate from 0.24-26.5 mg/L, Nitrite from 0.01-90 mg/L, Phosphate from 0.02-5.12 mg/L, Ammonium from 0.06-112 mg/L, Sulphate from 3-72 mg/L, Chloride from 3.25-224 mg/L, Chemical Oxygen Demand from 17-394 mg/L and Turbidity from 1.96-715 NTU. Free chlorine concentrations and dissolved oxygen were within the recommended limits for most part of the sampling period and ranged between 0.17-0.48 mg/L and 0.19-21.9 mg/L respectively. The pH, Phosphate, Sulphate and Free chlorine were within acceptable limits while Electrical Conductivity, Temperature, Total Dissolved Solid, Turbidity, Chemical Oxygen Demand, Chloride, Ammonium, Nitrate and Nitrite were not within specified limits. The reduction efficiencies observed generally ranged between 43.9 and 100 percent at all sampling points while zinc and lead were not detected throughout the sampling period. Cadmium showed low reduction rate ranging from 0 to 11.7 percent, while the rate of Copper reduction ranged from 0 to25 percent in January and February 2016. Zinc, lead and cadmium were generally not detected in the sludge samples except in January and February which could be due to the prevailing atmospheric conditions during the sampling period. Cu and Fe were detected through the sampling months of the study. We conclude that these municipal sewage plants are sources of pollution to their receiving watersheds and threats to public and environmental health.

The aim of the work was to evaluate the performance of the constructed wetland in frog culture sector for the effluent treatment in two phases of bullfrog culture. Limnological variables and the removal efficiency of nutrients were analyzed, the nutrients retention in the sediment and macrophytes used (Typha domingensis, Cyperus giganteus e Eichhornia crassipes) as well as biomass gain of the same. The treatment was efficient in a nitrate, nitrite, turbidity, total phosphorus, total suspended solids, biochemical oxygen demand, thermotolerant coliforms total, total dissolved solids and chlorophyll a. The high nutrients loads found in the phase of the high biomass frog storage, with lower phosphorus removals. The macrophytes used presented biomass gain satisfactory, with nutrient concentrations above the sediment. The three species stocked more nutrients during the phase of the high biomass frog storage, which high nutrients load. Eichhornia crassipes was the specie that most stored nitrogen and phosphorus in both phases and greater biomass gain in the phase of the high biomass frog storage. From the emerged species, T. domingensis showed the higher biomass gain in both phases, stocking all nutrients in the phase of the high biomass frog storage. There was a tendency of reduction of the organic matter in the sediment in both phases of the inlet to the outlet of wetland due to the presence of macrophytes. This same pattern of reduction was observed relation to the sediment. It was concluded that the treatment system implanted was efficient in improving the quality of the effluent, reducing nutrient and fecal coliform. The macrophytes played an important role in the reduction of such components and may be used to treat effluents of the frog culture

This study aimed to evaluate removing of sulphamethoxazole, diclofenac and 17β-estradiol on distilled and natural waters by oxidation with chlorine. The results indicated that the initial concentrations of microcontaminants as the inicial time, had a significant differences in both waters of study. For the tests in distilled water, high values of removing were found. The natural water was treated by clarification followed by post-chlorination and the results revealed that the best removal efficiency occurred for diclofenac then 17β-estradiol and sulphamethoxazole. In accordance with the Decree 2914/11, which establishes values of pH, temperature and contact time basis on the residual chlorine, the corresponding time would be up to 10 minutes for post-chlorination, so the best values were on the order of 61% for the DCF, 36% to E2 and 33% for SMX in distilled water, in addition, for natural waters, these values were 34% for the DCF to 24% to E2 and 11% for SMX. The doses of chlorine were compared and in distilled water only the DCF had a significant differences in the removal efficiency with the increase of the applied dose (3.0 mg l -1 ), but in the SMX and E2 no significant differences were observed. It was observed the formation of the sub products of chlorination described by other researchers with these microcontaminants in natural water for SMX and E2 in concentrations from 20 to 90 μg.L-1. However was not found the formation of sub products to DCF, which presented a major removal values found in this study. For the oxidation kinetics of the studied drugs, the ideal contact time was observed in 30 minutes for most studies and all microcontaminants has better adjustment to the kinetic model of the pseudo-second order, with K2 values in the order of 0.0133 (DCF), 0.0168 (SMX) and 0.0326 (E2) in distilled water and 0.0092 (DCF), 0.0025 (SMX) and 0.0479 (E2) in natural water

This study aimed to assess the potential for endocrine disruption of SS in vivo using adult and weanling male Wistar rats. In a first experiment, pubertal male rats (42th postnatal day, PND) were exposed ad libitum up to adulthood (56th PND) to a diet containing 0, 2,500, 5,000, 10,000 or 20,000 ppm of SS. The liver, kidneys, adrenals, testes, epididymis, ventral prostate and full seminal vesicle weights were evaluated, in addition to sexual hormones levels, sperm counts and sperm motility. In the second study, androgenic and antiandrogenic effects were evaluated in wealing male rats (21th PND), daily treated during 10 days with flutamide (anti-androgenic positive control, 3mg/kg/day, gavage), testosterone propionate (androgenic positive control, 1mg/kg/day, s.c.) and fed diets with SS at 10,000 or 20,000 ppm. In these later animals, no alterations were registered in body and organs weights, diet consumption and sperm countings. Exposure to the SS only induced a doseresponse decrease in the quality of adult rats sperm (first experiment), documented by decreased number of sperm with progressive movement (10,000 ppm, 20,000ppm). According to these results, SS exposure did not induce androgenic or antiandrogenic effect in both periods of the life of Wistar rats / Doutor

This research aims at the wastewater treatment systems using constructed wetlands of subsurface flow and horizontal flow. The main objective of this system is the removal of organic matter, since the carbonaceous matter present in the sewage is dedraded, both aerobically by microorganisms which are adhered on the roots of macrophytes, anaerobically by bacteria adhered to the substrate of the filter bed. The sewage treatment plant by Constructed Westlands is located in the city of Bauru, SP, and treats the sewage produced by the student's home and Deparment of Physical Education, Universidade Estadual Paulista Julio de Mesquita Filho (UNESP). For a better quality studies are used three-bed systems with 9m long by 4.5m wide and 0.80m depth and inclination of 1%. The beds were made up of different substrates: the first, filled with gravel nº 1, nº3 crushed stone and sand, the second filled with gravel, expanded polystyrene (Stryrofoam) and recycled crushed and coarse sand, gravel and the third paragraph 3 and coarse sand. Using these substrates could be assessed in two stages of analysis, which one gives the best results and conditions for the treatment of wastewater. The average efficiency of BOD removal was 85.6% for the bed of crushed rock, 84.2% for the foam bed and 85.4% for the sand bed. The removal efficiency phosphate averaged 53.3% for the gravek bed, the bed to 9.6% of polystyrene and 89% for the sand bed. For the Kjeldahl nitrogen removal efficiency was an average of 75.7% for the bed of gravel, 77.0% for the bed of Styrodom and 75.3% for the sand bed. In general the whole system is efficient for the treatment of wastewater, byr the bed of Styrofoam stand out because it is an alternative material and recycled
