Låt oss prata om våldsutsatta män : En kvalitativ studie om jourverksamheters arbete med män som utsätts för våld i heterosexuella relationer / Let us talk about men who are subjected to violence : A qualitative studie on how emergency services work with men who are subjected to violence in heterosexual relationships

Skow-Stasai, Sabina, Bondesson, Anton January 2023 (has links)
Most studies that deal with intimate partner violence (IPV) focus on men as the assailant and women as the victim. This study however explored how personnel within nonprofit men's shelters and crisis centers for men, work with male victims of IPV and what resources the personnel have to help these men. The central purpose was to get a broader understanding of IPV in Sweden by focusing on men's susceptibility, how it affects them and how well professionals and laymen within this field can work with male victims of IPV. The authors found that these businesses work with complex issues surrounding these men in borth different and equal ways.  The study was conducted using semi-structured qualitative interviews, and the number of interviewees was 9 people that currently work within the aforementioned men's shelters or crisis centers for men. From these interviews, the authors used content analysis to process and analyze the data. The interviewees mentioned that shame and stigmatization is highly prevalent in IPV affected men in heterosexual relationships regarding aspects of gender norms and masculinity, to the extent that it functions as a large barrier for many men in seeking help for their exposure to violence. This barrier is so large for these men that they more commonly deny their exposure to violence altogether or they become convinced that they are actually the perpetrators and not the victims.

"Pappa slår mamma" : En kvalitativ studie om ideella kvinnojourers arbete med barn som bevittnat våld. / "Daddy hits mummy" : A qualitative study of women's shelters work with children who have witnessed violence.

Kristensen, Veronica, Ohlsson, Rebecca January 2016 (has links)
Violence against women is a global public health problem and for a long time the woman has been in the spotlight as the only victim in the family, but now we know that children who have witnessed violence are greatly affected. Each year, thousands of women and children are seeking women shelters for support and protection. The purpose of this paper was to obtain knowledge about how women who are engaged in work at women's shelters describe that they support children who have witnessed violence and how they work to help them in their situation. In this study, a qualitative method was used and five individuals that are involved with women shelters were interviewed. The material collected has been analyzed based on content analysis and the theme that emerged from the analysis was “Safety”. The theoretical perspective that has been used to analyze the outcome is trauma theory and the concept of empathy. The result shows that the children in the shelter are showing signs of symptoms that can be compared with trauma and post-traumatic stress for example, aggression, avoidance behavior and hyperactivity. The result of the study also shows that the women treat the children at the shelter with an empathetic approach. To do that they are responsive to children's needs and a strong emphasis is placed on building a bond of trust with the child. In their contact with the children, playing was an important part. Feeling secure was central in their work with children who have witnessed violence. The shelters have knowledge but they want more education.

We Left Lassie Behind: Defense Personnel Relocation, Animal Abandonment, and Shelter Impacts

Griffiths, Gabriele 01 January 2015 (has links)
When Department of Defense (DoD) personnel receive orders to relocate to a new duty installation, nearly one third abandon their companion animals, which negatively affects the local shelters' costs, personnel, and capabilities to provide quality care for shelter animals. There is a lack of research on relevant policies among local government policy makers, installation commanders, directors of animal shelters, and animal rights advocates about the abandonment of companion animals by DoD personnel. The purpose of this qualitative descriptive case study was to investigate the relationship between the influx of abandoned DoD companion animals and the management and logistical (including financial) operations of 2 publicly funded animal shelters near a Midwest DoD installation. The theoretical framework was Merton's theory of unintended consequences. Data were collected through interviews with 2 shelter directors, 10 surveys completed by shelter personnel, and a review of the shelters' logistical and financial documents spanning fiscal years 2013 - 2014. Data were analyzed after coding for themes and patterns. According to study findings, the abandonment of companion animals by DoD personnel has a negative impact on the shelters' finances, shelter personnel workload and stress, and the quality of life for incoming animals as well as those already in the shelters. The implications for positive social change are to inform policy makers of the importance of implementing policies to keep DoD companion animals with families, thereby easing transitions for those at risk, which helps to maintain the financial solvency of animal shelters, reduce stress for shelter personnel, and help companion animals to adjust as they are adopted into new homes.

A place to belong :[RE] Imagining shelter for young women in Hillbrow

Leeuw, Thabiso 09 October 2014 (has links)
Johannesburg is a melting pot of people from different walks of life who have come to the city on the pursuit of happiness. Hillbrow is a neighbourhood infamous for its criminal activities. It is the point of arrival for many of the people who travel to Johannesburg looking for work, making it a very hostile environment for the vulnerable. Human trafficking is a highly lucrative business in South Africa. The global market for human trafficking is at $42, 5-billion (about R317-billion). In the Children’s Act 38, Section 194 of 2005 one of clauses refers to the needs of young women affected by human trafficking, (Mahery, Jamieson, & Scott, 2011). There is a clear need for a re-imagined approach to the typology of shelters provided through welfare structures. Young women need shelters in the inner city that are tailored for their specific needs especially the vast majority who are forced into the city through prostitution and human trafficking. This thesis deals with the design of a new typology that best addresses the needs of a shelter for young women in the city.
