The Master's Thesis Sigfrid Karg-Elert: Passacaglia and Fugue on B-A-C-H, op.150 concentrates both on the composer's life and this specific composition. The thesis traces the history of the formation of the composition. It begins by offering insights into the perception of music at the beginning of the 20th Century. I then attempt to show the relationship between the composer's life and his work, dealing with his musical language and his various compositions. The main topic is the formation of the composition "B-A-C-H" and an analysis. In the chapters devoted to the main topic, I analyze the circumstances under which the work was composed, giving attention both the "how" and the "why" and considering such aspects as form, theme, and harmony. In the last chapter, I describe the composer's concert tour of North America, where this work was composed, allowing the reader to have some sense of Sigfrid Karg-Elert's skill as a performer.

Gradus ad Parnassum of Modern Flute Technique: An Explication of Musical Intention and Design in 30 Capricen für Flöte allein, Opus 107 by Sigfrid Karg-Elert, with Three Recitals of Selected Works by Schulhoff, Telemann, Berio, Bach, Rodrigo, Gieseking, Reinecke, and Others

The aim of my thesis is to study the release and the project of Litografiskt Allehanda, an art magazine covering contemporary Swedish art and artists, published from 1859 to 1865. My purpose is to look at the choice of the published material for Litografiskt Allehanda, the influence the contributing artists, how the work with advertisement and subscriptions was made and if it fulfilled its own purpose. Through a social and communicative perspective I am studying the relations between the different actors like the publicists, the artists, the subscribers and also the interaction between the lithographs and the texts.  Litografiskt Allehanda was the first successful lithographic work produced in Sweden, and the release lasted for six years. The printer and lithographer Axel Jacob Salmson, who was the founder of the magazine, led the printing work for two years before Sigfrid Flodin, a bookseller, took over and continued the work for another four years. The idea with Litografiskt Allehanda was to reach out to people all over Sweden and give everyone an opportunity to enjoy art, something that usually was exclusively for the upper class in the big cities. The analysis shows that there were people in smaller cities that subscribed to the magazine and also that the amount increased every year. Every volume contained 48 lithographic posters with a diversity of genres, from portraits and landscapes to some with more ethnographic character and ancient Nordic motives. The content became more Swedish with every year and letters show that the participating artists had quite a big influence over the published material. Every poster was accompanied by a text, which didn’t necessary had anything to do with the image, but was meant to create some entertainment for the reader. Some of these essays were written by special authors, while some were written by the artists themselves. Even if Litografiskt Allehanda is mentioned in almost every reference as being of great importance for the development of lithography and its proliferation in Sweden, there is nothing written that is just about the magazine.

Denna uppsats analyserar det litterära temat känslighet i Sigfrid Siwertz’ roman En flanör. Begreppet känslighet definieras i relation till perceptioner och känslor och därefter belyses känslighetens uttrycksformer tematiskt i en närläsning av romanen. Analysen relaterar vidare till andra valda litterära gestaltningar, som kan sättas i sammanhang med verket. Speciellt fokus läggs vid att kontextualisera känsligheten med hjälp av litterära såväl som filosofiska jämförelsepunkter. Uppsatsen argumenterar för att känsligheten fungerar som en central narrativ drivkraft och samtidigt som en funktion som upplöser det ”flanörideal” som inledningsvis gestaltas hos huvudpersonen Torsten Gjörloff. Detta mynnar ut i ett intressant motiv där ”hyperkänslighet” måste överfinnas för att det ska vara möjligt att relatera till och sympatisera med andra människor. För att belysa detta tema på djupet lånar denna uppsats in begrepp från Henri Bergson vars filosofi influerade Siwertz, och genom denna explikation blir känsligheten och överskridandet av den möjlig att begripa på ett nytt sätt. Uppsatsen avslutas med en reflektion över hur känsligheten kan relateras till vår samtid.
