Aula Site-Specificity no contexto de formação do artista: processos de emancipação e de subjetivação / Site-Specificity Class in the context of the artsist\'s education: processes of emancipation and subjectivitySouza, Bertoneto Alves de 12 November 2014 (has links)
The redefinition of sculpture and the current guidelines for creation, through the practice of projects, provoke change in the artist\'s formation. The class expanded to learning Site-Specificity. The studied hypothesis, along with the educational project outlined to explore the possibilities of forms of experimentation as well as the artistic procedures in Site-Specificity project, bring life into the \'classroom\' and better involve the students as they perform different and complex activities in public spaces, supposing that these characteristics from the practice of Site-Specificity project can contribute to the formation of the young artist and provide some solutions to the growing demands of professionalization that has been suffering contemporary art in relation to society. The main goal was to explore the possibilities of the renewal of both, the forms of experimentation and the procedures in Site-Specificity project to depict and explain its influences and contributions to an artist\'s formation. The specific goals correspond to the course taken by the dissertation and the \'site\' classes\' process, of which the three chapters stand as fields of dialectical relationships, where Site-Specificity designates equally what is to be accomplished as well as what is done in order to achieve it. This dialectical relationship leads to many possibilities of operating projects, having in mind the different student\'s concerns. In conclusion, each chapter, respectively, collaborates to a goal. The first chapter is a reflection of the expansion of sculpture and the Site-Specificity\'s transformations; the second chapter is about the Site-Specificity classes, and lastly, the third chapter denominated \"Double exposure\", presents student\'s exhibitions as a result of the learning process from the Site-Specificity classes.

The research project analyses the directions of the modern sculptural thoughts towards an environmental scale, a process that begins in the end of the 19th Century, a moment in which Auguste Rodins The Gates of Hell modifies the classic narrative space breaking up with the premise of the monument and defend every time more an immersion of the work in the observer space. The historical vanguard period was also fundamental to rethink the boundaries between the traditional languages and the recognition of spheres that are not of fine arts ñ from the dissolution of the base in sculpture of Constantin Brancusi, passing through the renovation of the art statute of Marcel Duchamp, to the collage experiences of Kurt Schwitters Merzbau. The dissertation examines specially the production that has questioned the sculpture tradition, the contemporary manifestations that come from modern tradition, projecting the art field beyond the so far fixed artistic genders and searching to expand the notion of sculpture in terms of space and time, as well as your artistic practice significance. Between the decades of 1940 and 1960, the break with this tradition culminates in the radically body actions of Jackson Pollock that gives a new scale to paintings; and afterwards, in a production that emerged as a deep critique of the market and the every time earlier institutionalization of the art work. The contemporary art, therefore, would have its origin in a process of the object critique precipitated by mass culture problems where the works are recognized in a cultural word, even when they resist to their cooptation. Without being object of comprehensive analyses, the contemporary sculpture, if we still can denominate sculpture the works produced from the 1860 decade on, seems to have placed the modern notion of form in crisis, and started to operate in an enlarged context, open to space and to the urban cultural dynamic. It is at his moment that the dissertation approaches Richard Serra, José Resende and Hélio Oiticicas work and dedicates more careful analyses over those works that deal with environmental scale, or yet, approach either physical, social or cultural contingencies of the place in which they act, operating to the poetic of the site specificity.

Compositional structures in mural design : towards a site-specific deconstructive mural methodologyAbdelrahman, Akmal H. H. January 2009 (has links)
Murals have been the formal visual interpretation of the cultural, social and political life of all ages. Throughout they have been consistently combined with their architectural setting, for example, in ancient Egyptian tombs, in Renaissance churches and on the external walls of buildings in Mexico in the twentieth century. This is a central feature of mural painting. However many contemporary murals do not integrate with their architectural settings, in other words, do not fulfil the site-specificity of the architectural spaces for which they were made. This means that the most important aspect that distinguishes murals from other types of painting is absent. I studied and analysed a number of murals produced in the Italian Renaissance, Baroque and Rococo as this particular period is considered to be not only one of the most significant in the history of art but also a period in which painting and architecture were very closely allied as practices. In particular the radical developments in painting of pictorial space took place along side the developments in architecture. I argue that Renaissance murals could be described, using the terminology of contemporary art, as site-specific art. By identifying the relationship between pictorial space, architectural space and compositional structure I was able to test, through my own practice, the importance of these relationships in understanding the site-specificity of the compositional structure of murals. To address the issue of sitespecificity in murals, I investigated and developed a set of compositional structures through my mural practice that could be applied in the design, execution, and teaching of contemporary mural design. I have developed the notion of a deconstructive method of mural design in which the illusory space of the mural derives its compositional structure from the architectural space in which it sited. I have applied it, tested it and refined it through the execution of a number of hypothetical and live mural commissions. I believe that the approach to the study and practice of mural design I have developed from the perspective of a practice lead researcher contributes to the furtherance of mural design as both a profession and field of study. In particular the identification of compositional structures in mural design and the proposal of a deconstructive method contributes to our understanding of what a mural is as well as current notions of site-specificity in contemporary art.

Installation art and memory : a practice-as-research explorationBarber, James January 2012 (has links)
This practice-as-research project investigates how a piece of site-responsive Installation Art, titled Triple Point Dunnage (exhibited in Royal William Yard, June 2009), can be used to generate knowledge about memory work through experience of site. Working in dialogue with the ideas of Daniel C. Dennett, Lucy Lippard and Gaston Bachelard, I attempted to create a permeable and fluctuating creative setting for the memory work of participants. An approach that used site as a stimulant within a process which also incorporated theoretical themes. During the period of design and construction, I interacted with and recorded interviews with people who had a personal connection with the site or with an interest in how memory works. The final installation presented layers of spoken fragmented content in a dialectic relationship within the installation’s spatial construction. The responses of the installation’s visitors and participants were collated through a response book and interviews. These were analysed in order to discover to what extent, if at all, the properties I had developed and designed into the work had shaped the engagements of the participants. The multi-valented properties of the work generated an array of responses that suggested that the viewers had fashioned their experience by blending the fragmented stories of others with their own personal histories. This engagement resembles Dennett’s concept of “self-narrator” and resonates with Bachelard’s concept of the fusion of physical and psychological space and Lippard’s understanding of place. By exploring memory through site Triple Point Dunnage generated a sense of place that was a fusion of the participants’ responses to the external physical environment and their associative memories stimulated by the affective fragmented properties of the work.

Inside The Power Station : Allegory And The Dance Of Represented IdeasCunnington, Maree Helen January 2004 (has links)
This performance-as-research project incorporated a five-month residency inside a working power station, Swanbank, Ipswich, a provider of electricity to Australia's eastern states via the national grid. The concept 'power station' is compelling because it involves the transformation of material form (coal) to immaterial phenomena (electricity), a process analogous to making electronically-mediated art. Three linked interdisciplinary works were created out of the artist's immersion on site: Swanshift, a music-video eulogy to the closure of the station's oldest coal-fired facility, Swanbank 'A'; The Industrial Theatre, a photographic series featuring Swanbank workers; and unstatic, a live, video-mediated performance. As an enquiry into meaning within contemporary art practice, this research project used allegory as its symbolic mode of thought and formation. Through allegory, the Swanbank site was explored metaphorically to reveal a fictional, parallel world beyond the literal surface of danger, authority and rigour. In this space of excess, unreality and overflowing boundaries, meaning is multiple and celebrated. Hand-in-hand with an exploration of allegory, this exegesis also presents an insight into methodologies for industrial, site-specific, interdisciplinary practice, and arts-industry collaboration.

Socialt och ekologiskt byggande på Nya Jägersro : Ett platsspecifikt planeringskoncept för fastigheten Nya Jägersro i Malmö / Social and ecological development at Nya Jägersro : A site specific planning concept for the property Nya Jägersro in MalmöNilsson Öhrn, Nora, Jakob, Fagerström January 2021 (has links)
Uppsatsens frågeställningar baseras i två problematiker. / This thesis has been created to act as a basis for the preparation of a structural sketch of the property Nya Jägersro in Malmö. The thesis aims to create a planning concept that combines social and ecological sustainability by taking into account the specific characteristics of the site. Both the municipality and the property owner, the two most influential stakeholders, place great focus on sustainable development. The thesis examines two problems. The first is the property owner's separation of sustainability aspects, which through the reasoning that sustainability is created through interactions between different sustainability aspects can become problematic. The second is how Nya Jägersro as a place is affected by ideals of densification in order to build sustainably. To address these problems the purpose of the thesis is to develop a planning concept that combines social and ecological sustainability by taking into account the specific characteristics of the site. The theoretical framework consists of three theories that deal with sustainable site-specific planning and design for developing sustainable cities. The methods of data collection that have been used are site reading, literature studies and semi-structured interviews. The planning concept that is finally presented is referred to as JägersGro, which coincides in several respects with SMT's and Malmö Stad's agendas, but also deviates in some aspects. The biggest deviating factor in relation to SMT is that JägersGro assumes that sustainability consists of the combination of different sustainability systems. Another deviating factor from both actors is that JägersGro advocates the idea that the human impact on the natural systems should not only be reduced. Instead, sustainable districts are considered to be involved in regenerative processes in order to function in a balanced cycle with nature.
