Transferts d’eau et de soluté en milieu non saturé hétérogène à l’échelle d’un pilote de laboratoire : expériences et modélisations / Transfers of water and solute in unsaturated heterogeneous porous media in a laboratory scale lysimeter : experiments and modeling

L’hétérogénéité de la zone non saturée joue un rôle important dans le transfert d’eau et de soluté car elle accentue à la fois le développement des zones de stockage temporelles et les écoulements préférentiels. Par conséquent, la validation des modèles prédictifs nécessite le développement des outils expérimentaux spécifiques afin d’observer et de quantifier les mécanismes de transport impliqués dans un système non saturé hétérogène. Cette thèse vise à étudier l’effet combiné de la vitesse d’infiltration, de la barrière capillaire et l’angle de la pente d’interface entre deux matériaux sur les processus de l’écoulement de l’eau et du transport de soluté dans un modèle physique, le lysimètre de laboratoire 1x1x1.6 m3, nommé LUGH (Lysimeter for Urban Groundwater Hydrology) et un modèle numérique 3D de ce lysimètre. Le lysimètre LUGH est rempli par un sable fin et un mélange bimodal (50 % sable fin et 50 % gravier) en deux configurations: un profil uniforme de matériau bimodal ou un profil avec deux couches avec une pente de 14o. Ces agencements figurent l’hétérogénéité structurale et texturale observée sur un des sites expérimentaux de l’OTHU (Observatoire de Terrain en Hydrologie Urbaine) : le bassin d’infiltration d’eaux pluviales Django Reinhardt géré par la ville de Lyon (France). Le lysimètre est alimenté en eau et avec un traceur inerte (bromure de potassium, KBr) sur une partie de la surface par un système d’arrosage automatique. Les effluents ont été recueillis dans quinze sorties différentes en bas du lysimètre. La forte hétérogénéité des flux des sorties et des courbes de percée souligne la mise en place des écoulements préférentiels résultant à la fois de l’effet de barrière capillaire et de l’effet de fond du lysimètre. A partir des résultats expérimentaux, la modélisation numérique à l’aide de logiciel COMSOL MultiphysicsTM a permis de mieux comprendre les mécanismes responsables de ces transferts hétérogènes. Lorsque le modèle numérique validé, un test de sensibilité a été conduit pour étudier les effets de la vitesse d’infiltration et de la pente de l’interface sur l’écoulement. Les résultats montrent que la diminution de la vitesse d’infiltration ou l’augmentation de la pente de l’interface favorisent le développement des écoulements préférentiels. Notre étude a donné également des renseignements pertinents sur le couplage entre les processus hydrodynamiques et le transfert des solutés dans les sols non saturés hétérogènes en soulignant le rôle de la géométrie des interfaces ainsi que celui des conditions aux limites comme des facteurs clés pour la quantification des écoulements préférentiels. / The heterogeneity of the unsaturated zone plays an important role in the water and solutes transfer as it accentuates both the development of stagnant zones for water and preferential flow. Therefore, the validation of predictive models requires the development of specific experimental tools to observe and quantify the transport mechanisms involved in a heterogeneous unsaturated system. The aim of this thesis is to describe the combined effect of infiltration, capillary barrier and sloping layered soil on both flow and solute transport processes in a large physical model (1x1x1.6 m3) called LUGH (Lysimeter for Urban Groundwater Hydrology) and a 3D numerical flow model. Sand and a soil composed of a bimodal sand-gravel mixture were placed in the lysimeter represent one of the commun structural and textural elements of the heterogeneity observed in the vadose zone under an infiltration basin of Lyon (France). The soil was compacted in two configurations: a uniform profile and a profile with two layers having a slope of 14°. Water and an inert tracer (KBr) were injected from the top of the lysimeter using a specific water sprinkler system and collected at 15 different outlets at the bottom. The 15 breakthrough curves obtained presented high heterogeneity, emphasising the establishment of a preferential flow resulting from both capillary barrier and soil layer dip effects. Numerical modelling led to better understanding of the mechanisms responsible for these heterogeneous transfers and it was also used to perform a sensitivity analysis of the effects of water velocity (water and solute flux fed by the sprinkler) and the slope interface. The results show that decreasing velocity and increasing the slope of the interface can lead to the development of preferential flows. In addition, the offset of the centre of gravity of the flow distribution at the output increases linearly as a function of the slope angle of the layered soil. This paper allows coupling the hydrodynamic approach with the transfer of pollutants in unsaturated heterogeneous soil and highlighting preferential flow by flow modeling.

Lights and shadows : multi-wavelength analysis of young stellar objects and their protoplanetary discs

Stars form from the collapse of molecular clouds and evolve in an environment rich in gas and dust before becoming Main Sequence stars. During this phase, characterised by the presence of a protoplanetary disc, stars manifest changes in the structure and luminosity. This thesis performs a multi-wavelength analysis, from optical to mm range, on a sample of young stars (YSOs), mainly Classical T Tauri (CTTS). The purpose is to study optical and infrared variability and its relation with the protoplanetary disc. Longer wavelength, in the mm range, are used instead to investigate the evolution of the disc, in terms of dust growth. In optical, an F-test on a sample of 39 CTTS reveals that 67\% of the stars are variable. The variability, quantified through pooled sigma, is visible both in magnitude amplitudes and changes over time. Time series analysis applied on the more variable stars finds the presence of quasi periodicity, with periods longer than two weeks, interpreted either as eclipsing material in the disc happening on a non-regular basis, or as a consequence of star-disc interaction via magnetic field lines. The variability of YSOs is confirmed also in infrared, even if with lower amplitude. No strong correlations are found between optical and infrared variability, which implies a different cause or a time shift in the two events. By using a toy model to explore their origin, I find that infrared variations are likely to stem from emissions in the inner disc. The evolution of discs in terms of dust growth is confirmed in most discs by the analysis of the slope of the spectral energy distribution (SED), after correcting for wind emission and optical depth effects. However, the comparison with a radiative transfer model highlights that a number of disc parameters, in particular disc masses and temperature, dust size distribution and composition, can also affect the slope of the SED.

[pt] Em um maciço rochoso, as fraturas apresentam-se de forma irregular e descontínua. A complexidade na distribuição espacial destas descontinuidades faz com que o mecanismo de ruptura por tombamento ocorra mais frequentemente por uma combinação de dois tipos de fenômenos: Tombamento de blocos e flexural. Assim, a ruptura por tombamento do tipo bloco-flexural pode ser considerada a forma mais comum presente neste tipo de mecanismo. Trabalhos utilizando o método de equilíbrio limite ou modelos físicos estudam a influência desta combinação, mas a literatura relata poucos trabalhos numéricos que possam ajudar na compreensão dos fenômenos envolvidos neste processo de ruptura. O presente trabalho procura modelar o mecanismo de ruptura por tombamento bloco-flexural através do método dos elementos discretos (DEM), utilizando o software PFC (Particle Flow Code). Em particular, procura-se avaliar as potencialidades do método para estudos deste tipo, utilizando um novo modelo de contato entre partículas e a calibração das propriedades elásticas do material sintético. Apresentam-se também detalhes da metodologia utilizada e exemplos de validação, incluindo comparações com soluções analíticas e semi-analíticas disponíveis na literatura. / [en] Joints exhibit an irregular and discontinuous behavior inside the rock mass. The spatial distribution complexity of these discontinuities causes the toppling failure occurs more often by a combination of two types of toppling phenomena: toppling of rock blocks and flexural toppling. Thus, the block-flexural toppling can be considered the most common when a toppling process is being developed in rock slopes. Analytical and physical models approach, were presented in order to study each process individually, but the literature reports few works that may help to understand the influence of the two processes together. The present work aims to represents the mechanism of block-flexural toppling through the discrete elements method (DEM) using the PFC (Particle Flow Code) software. In particular, the objective is to assess the potential of the method for studies of this type, using a new model of contact between particles and the elastic properties calibration of the synthetic material. In order to do that, the work shows the methodology details and validation examples, including comparisons with analytical and semi-analytical solutions that are available in the literature.

Study Of Solidification And Microstructure Produced By Cooling Slope Method

In most casting applications, dendritic microstructure morphology is not desired because it leads to poor mechanical properties. Forced convection causing sufficient shearing in the mushy zone of the partially solidified melt is one of the means to suppress this dendritic growth. The dendrites formed at the solid-liquid interface are detached and carried away due to strong fluid flow to form slurry. This slurry, consisting of rosette or globular particles, provides less resistance to flow even at a high solid fraction and can easily fill the die-cavity. The stated principle is the basis of a new manufacturing technology called “semi-solid forming” (SSF), in which metal alloys are cast in the semi-solid state. This technique has numerous advantages over other existing commercial casting processes, such as reduction of macrosegregation, reduction of porosity and low forming efforts. Among all currently available methods available for large scale production of semisolid slurry, the cooling slope is considered to be a simple but effective method because of its simple design and easy control of process parameters, low equipment and running costs, high production efficiency and reduced inhomogeneity. With this perspective, the primary objective of the present research is to investigate, both experimentally and numerically, convective heat transfer and solidification on a cooling slope, in addition to the study of final microstructure of the cast billets. Some key process parameters are identified, namely pouring temperature, slope angle, slope length, and slope cooling rate. A systematic scaling analysis is performed in order to understand the relative importance of the parameters in influencing the final properties of the slurry and microstructure after solidification. A major part of the present work deals with the development of an experimental set up with careful consideration of the range of process parameters involved by treating the cooling slope as a heat exchanger. Subsequently, a comprehensive numerical model is developed to predict the flow, heat transfer, species concentration solid fraction distribution of aluminum alloy melt while flowing down the cooling slope. The model uses a variable viscosity relation for slurry. The metal-air interface at the top during the melt flow is tracked using a volume of fluid (VOF) method. Solidification is modeled using an enthalpy based approach and a volume averaged technique. The mushy region is modeled as a multi-layered porous medium consisting of fixed columnar dendrites and mobile equiaxed or fragmented grains. In addition, the solidification model also incorporates a fragmentation criterion and solid phase movement. The effects of key process parameters on flow behavior involving velocity distribution, temperature distribution, solid fractions at the slope exit, and macrosegregation, are studied numerically and experimentally for aluminium alloy A356. The resulting microstructures of the cast billets obtained from the experiments are studied and characterized. Finally the experimental results are linked to the model predictions for establishing the relations involving interdependence of the stated key process parameters in determining the quality of the final cast products. This study is aimed towards providing the necessary guidelines for designing a cooling slope and optimizing the process parameters for desirable quality of the solidified product.

Of Stewardship, Suffering and the “Slippery Slope”: A Vattimian Analysis of the Sanctity of Life Ethos in Canada (1972–2005)

This dissertation examines from a Vattimian perspective the challenge that euthanasia and assisted suicide posed to the sanctity of life ethos in Canada from 1972–2005. Gianni Vattimo’s central themes—metaphysics (absolute values), “event of being” (lived experiences that call absolute values into question), and passive-reactive nihilism (the use of “masks” or “disguises” to prevent the dissolution of metaphysics)—are pivotal to understanding the way religious and secular beliefs are interwoven within ethical, medical, legal and political discourses in Canada. Vattimo’s philosophico-ethical approach was specifically chosen because as a theoretical tool, it helps to illuminate the presence, weakening, and resilience of metaphysics in discourses surrounding an intentionally hastened death. To demonstrate how Vattimo’s major themes apply empirically to the research, a social constructionist approach was adopted in the form of a discourse analysis. Particular emphasis was placed on an examination of the three most important cases of death and dying in Canada, namely, Nancy B., Sue Rodriguez and Robert Latimer. The bulk of the evidence suggests that when these “events of being” challenged the sanctity doctrine as the ultimate foundation for life-terminating decisions, ethical, medical, legal and political discourses converged to promote three normative positions or authorizing discourses used in the tradition of Christian ethics: (1) stewardship—the view that since life is a “loan from God,” sacred, and of infinite worth, death cannot be intentionally hastened (“nature must take its course”); (2) value in prolonged suffering—the view that since suffering possesses transcendent meaning or purpose, its prolongation is justified in individual circumstances; and (3) the “slippery slope”—the view that any weakening of the sanctity of life ethos inevitably harms or threatens the community. Generally speaking, religious and secular advocates of the sanctity of life ethos reacted similarly in cases involving an intentionally hastened death. In other words, both the religious and the secular embraced metaphysics (absolute values), condoned and rationalized the prolongation of suffering, and relied on the “slippery slope” as a “mask” to maintain the sanctity of human life as first principle. The research strongly suggests that Canada is still significantly indebted to Christian notions when it comes to discussions surrounding the decriminalization of euthanasia and assisted suicide.

Cette étude présente les architectures et la dynamique sédimentaire de la pente carbonatée au nord de Little Bahama Bank (Bahamas) à partir des données de sondeur multifaisceaux, de sondeur de sédiments (Chirp) et de sismique multitraces Haute Résolution (HR) issues de la mission Carambar 1(2010). Une analyse morpho-sédimentaire de surface permet de définir les grands domaines physiographiques et les éléments architecturaux de la pente et précise la répartition spatiale des sédiments dans le contexte actuel de haut niveau marin relatif. Elle révèle une pente dominée par de la boue de périplate-forme avec différents niveaux d’induration et entaillée par des glissements et des canyons sous marins.La variabilité spatiale du transfert de boue depuis la plate-forme vers la pente, couplée à l’évolution latérale de l’intensité du courant des Antilles est à l’origine de grandes différences morphologiques d’est en ouest. Dans la partie occidentale, la pente est environ deux fois plus étendue que dans la partie orientale,elle s’apparente à un système progradant. La pente orientale, quant à elle, est marquée par des processus de bypass. En effet, cette partie est caractérisée par de nombreux canyons sous-marins se poursuivant par des sillons distributaires alimentant des zones de dépôts distales confinées. Une étude intégrée permet la caractérisation à haute résolution des glissements et des canyons et la proposition d’un modèle déformation. Ces éléments architecturaux sont initiés par des déstabilisations intra-pente et leur évolution est contrôlée par des épisodes d’érosion régressive, la sédimentation pélagique et les écoulements gravitaires boueux. Enfin, une analyse sismo-stratigraphique permet de reconstituer l’évolution tectono-sédimentaire de la pente de l’Albien à l’Actuel en lien avec le contexte géodynamique des Caraïbes, l’eustatisme et la production carbonatée sur la plate-forme. / This study focuses on the architectures and the sedimentary dynamic of a carbonate slope located on the northern part of Little Bahama Bank (Bahamas) using a dataset composed of multibeam echo sounder,subbottom profiler (Chirp) and High-Resolution (HR) multichannel seismic collected during the Carambar 1cruise (2010). A morpho-sedimentary surface analysis defines the physiographic domains and the architectural elements of the slope and investigates the spatial distribution of sediments in the context of the current sea-level highstand. It reveals a slope dominated by periplatform ooze with several levels of induration and incised by numerous slides and submarine canyons. The spatial variability of off-bank transport, combined with the lateral variability of the Antilles Current intensity, are at the origin of a morphological evolution from west to east in the study area. In the western part, the slope is around twice as large as the eastern part and can be considered as a prograding system. The eastern slope is marked by bypass processes. Indeed, numerous submarine canyons are visible on the seafloor and are connected to several shallow distributary furrows feeding confined depositional areas. An integrated study allows a high resolution characterisation of slides and submarines canyons and enables us to propose a model of formation. These architectural elements are initiated by intra-slope destabilisations and their evolution is controlled by phases of retrogressive erosion,pelagic sedimentation and muddy gravity flows. Finally, a seismo-stratigraphic analysis allow to reconstitutethe tectonic and sedimentary evolution of the slope since the Albian to the present-day by establishing a link with the geodynamic context of Caraïbes, relative sea-level changes and the carbonate production on the platform.

Finite elements modelling and analysis of the effect of vegetation on forested slopes stability / Modélisation et analyse par éléments finis de l'effet de la végétation sur la stabilité des pentes en zones forestières

L'ingénierie écologique, qui est décrite comme «la gestion de la nature», a d'abord été proposée par Odum en 1971. Dans les dernières décennies, l'ingénierie écologique a été largement consacrée à lutter contre l'érosion des sols et les mouvements de masse, tout en permettant d'assurer la durabilité des écosystèmes. L'objectif de cette thèse est d'évaluer l'impact de peuplements forestiers sur la stabilité de pentes de dimension finie, en considérant à la fois les effets mécaniques et hydrologiques des racines peu profondes contre les glissements de terrain. Deux sites forestiers monospécifiques et équiennes, plantés respectivement de Robinia pseudoacacia et Platycladus orientalis, ont été sélectionnés sur le Plateau du Loess en Chine et utilisés comme sites d'étude. Le Facteur de Sécurité (FoS) de ces pentes ont été calculées en utilisant un modèle éléments finis 2D qui prend en compte la distribution des racines dans les couches superficielles du sol.Des mesures de terrain et des tests de laboratoire ont été effectués afin d'estimer les principaux paramètres du modèle, à savoir la distribution des surfaces relatives de racines dans le sol (Root Area Ratio), la résistance à la traction des racines, ainsi que les propriétés mécaniques et hydrologiques du sol nu. La contribution des racines à la résistance au cisaillement du sol a été considérée par l'intermédiaire d'une « cohésion additionnelle » calculée à l'aide de modèles fournis par la littérature. Six modèles existants ont été testés. Cette thèse est composée de deux chapitres principaux portant sur: (1) l'effet mécanique de l'hétérogénéité spatiale de la distribution des racines à l'échelle de pente; (2) l'influence de la distribution des racines sur le couplage entre la diffusion de l'eau interstitiel et les contraintes mécaniques dans le sol et son impact sur la stabilité des pentes.Les simulations amènent aux conclusions principales suivantes: (1) les pentes en terrasse sont en théorie 20% plus stables que les pentes rectilignes, sans tenir compte des effets hydrologiques; (2) le FoS atteint une valeur asymptotique lorsque l'on augmente la cohésion des racines; (3) les variations de la cohésion des racines observées sur le terrain ont peu d'effet sur la stabilité des pentes. Toutefois le renforcement de la partie basse des pentes, où les racines ont un plus grand impact positif sur le FOS, peut permettre de diminuer le risque de glissement; (4) l'effet des fortes précipitations sur la stabilité de la pente pourrait probablement être atténué par la présence de racines, mais cet effet dépend des caractéristiques des racines et de leur influence sur le débit d'eau dans le sol. / Ecological engineering, which is described as ‘the management of nature', was first proposed by Odum in 1971. In the past few decades, ecological engineering has been largely devoted to combat soil erosion and mass movement all over the world, because of its benefit on sustainable ecosystems. The objective of this thesis is to evaluate the impact of forest stands on the stability of finite slopes, considering both the mechanical and hydrological effects of roots against shallow landslides. Two monospecific and even-aged forest sites planted with Robinia pseudoacacia and Platycladus orientalis respectively were selected on the Loess Plateau of China and used as study sites. Slope Factors of Safety were calculated using a 2D finite element model that takes into account the distribution of roots in the shallow layers of soil.Field site experiments and laboratory tests were performed in order to estimate the main parameters of the model, i.e. distribution of root area ratio within the soil, root tensile strength, as well as bare soil mechanical and hydrological properties. The contribution of roots to soil shear strength was considered through an additional cohesion calculated with models provided by the literature. Six existing models were tested. This thesis is composed of two main chapters that make the focus on : (1) the mechanical effect of the spatial heterogeneity of root distribution at the slope scale; (2) the influence of root distribution on the coupling between pore fluid diffusion and mechanical stress and its impact on slope stability. This study brings to the following main conclusions: (1) terraced slopes were 20% more stable than rectilinear slopes, disregarding the differences in hydrological regimes between the two sites; (2) FoS could reach an asymptotic value when increasing root additional cohesion; (3) variations of the actual root cohesion do not affect much slope stability. However more attention should be given to the reinforcement of the bottom part of the actual slopes, where roots have a larger positive impact on the FoS; (4) the effect of heavy precipitations on slope stability could probably be overcome or at least mitigated by root system network, but this depends on root characteristics and their resulting effect on soil water flow.

L'effet de la pente tibiale postérieure accrue sur l'intégrité du ligament croisé antérieur et des patrons de lésions méniscales : une approche méthodologique / The effect of the increased posterior tibial slope on the integrity of the anterior cruciate ligament and patterns of the meniscal injury : a methodological approach

L'objectif de ce travail était de rendre compte d'une revue complète de la littérature comparant les différentes méthodes et techniques de mesure de la pente tibiale par la radiographie conventionnelle, le scanner et l'IRM pour aider les chirurgiens orthopédistes à établir une méthode de mesure standardisée et fiable. Le travail inclut aussi deux études rétrospectives mesurant la pente tibiale en utilisant des modalités différentes. Il a été rapporté que la pente tibiale postérieure (PTS) a une influence sur la cinématique du genou notamment le ligament croisé antérieur (LCA). Une meilleure compréhension de la signification de la PTS pourrait améliorer le développement du dépistage des lésions du LCA, et les programmes de prévention, et pourrait servir de base pour des programmes de réadaptation individuels adaptés après la reconstruction du LCA. De plus, dans plusieurs interventions orthopédiques telle que l'ostéotomie tibiale haute, la pente tibiale peut modifier la mécanique du genou. Dès lors, une mesure préopératoire exacte de la pente tibiale postérieure est obligatoire. Plusieurs méthodes sont utilisées sur des radiographies conventionnelles, des scanners et l’IRM, mais jusqu'à présent il n'y a aucune méthode standard validée. La première partie de ce travail consiste en une introduction générale des structures anatomiques d'intérêt impliquées dans cette étude, à savoir l'articulation du genou, les ligaments croisés antérieurs, les ménisques et le tibia. Cette partie d'introduction inclut une description de l'anatomie brute, de la structure microscopique, de la fonction et quelques considérations cliniques. La deuxième partie du travail est consacrée à une revue systématique des modalités et techniques disponibles dans la littérature. Les informations quant aux méthodes de mesure de la pente tibiale chez des sujets normaux et avec LCA-lésé ont été extraites de toutes les études incluses de manière systématique, et ont été classifiées selon la technique de mesure et les modalités utilisées. L'axe le plus utilisé était l'axe tibial anatomique proximal (PTAA), et la méthode Midpoint est la plus fréquemment utilisée pour calculer le PTAA. Les valeurs les plus grandes de la pente tibiale médiale (MTS) et de la pente tibiale latérale (LTS) ont été obtenues en utilisant l'axe du cortex tibial antérieur, tandis que les valeurs les plus faibles ont été obtenues avec l'axe tibial diaphysaire. En comparaison directe, la plus grande valeur de la MTS pour le genou pathologique a été trouvée par les études radiologiques, tandis que les études IRM ont présenté les plus petites valeurs. Par conséquent, pour la LTS, les valeurs IRM étaient plus petites que celles des études par CT. La troisième partie du travail était une étude de cas-contrôle, en utilisant l'IRM; les LTS, MTS et pentes des ménisque interne et externe (LMS, MMS) ont été comparés chez 100 patients avec un LCA-déchiré isolé et chez un groupe témoin de 100 patients avec une douleur patello-fémorale et un LCA intact. La découverte la plus importante de cette étude consiste en ce que les pentes tibiales augmentées, aussi bien osseuse que méniscales, sont des facteurs de risque pour la blessure du LCA. Comme le ménisque a tendance à corriger la pente observée vers l'horizontale, la perte du ménisque postérieur peut potentialiser cet effet en augmentant la pente fonctionnelle. [etc] / The aim of this work was to report a comprehensive literature review comparing the different methods and techniques of measurement of the posterior tibial slope (PTS) among the conventional radiograph, computed tomography (CT), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in order to help the orthopedic surgeons to establish a standard and reliable measurement method. The work also includes two retrospective studies measuring the tibial slope using different modalities. It has been reported that the PTS has an influence on the kinematics of the knee notably the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). A better understanding of the significance of the PTS could improve the development of ACL injury screening and prevention programmes, and might serve as a basis for individual adapted rehabilitation programmes after ACL reconstruction. Additionally, in several orthopedic interventions such as high tibial osteotomy, the tibial slope can result in altered knee mechanics. Therefore, an exact preoperative measurement of the posterior tibial slope is mandatory. Several methods are used on conventional radiographs, CT and MRI, but until now there is no standard validated method. The first part of this work was a general introduction about the anatomical structures of interest involved in this study, namely the knee joint, the anterior cruciate ligaments, the menisci, and the tibia, this introduction part included the gross anatomy, the microscopic structure, function, and some clinical considerations. The second part of the work is dedicated to a systematic review of the available modalities and techniques in the literature. Information regarding methods of measurement of the tibial slope in normal and ACL-injury subjects was extracted from all the studies in a systematic fashion and classified according to the measurement technique and used modalities. The most common used axis was the proximal tibial anatomical axis (PTAA), and the midpoint method is the most frequently used method for calculating the PTAA. By direct comparison, the greatest value of the medial tibial slope (MTS) for the pathological knee was achieved by the radiological studies, while the MRI studies presented the smallest values. Consequently, for the pathological lateral tibial slope (LTS), the MRI values were smaller than that of the CT studies. The greatest values of the MTS and LTS were obtained by the anterior tibial cortex axis, while the minimum values were achieved by the tibial diaphyseal axis.This third part of the work was a case-control study, by using MRI, the bony slopes as well as the lateral and medial meniscal slopes (LMS, MMS) were compared in 100 patients with isolated ACL injury and a control group of 100 patients with patello-femoral pain and an intact ACL. The most important finding of this study is that the increased tibial slopes, both bony and meniscal, are risk factors for ACL injury. As the meniscus tends to correct the observed slope towards the horizontal, loss of the posterior meniscus may potentiate this effect by increasing the functional slope. The fourth part of the work is aimed to evaluate the effects of the patient characteristics, time from injury (TFI), and PTS on meniscal tear patterns. In the 362 ACL-injured analyzed patients; the most common tear location was the posterior horn (PH) of the medial meniscus (MM), followed by tear involving the whole MM. Patient age, BMI, and TFI were significantly associated with the incidence of MM tear. Edge computing requires highly energy efficient microprocessor units with embedded non-volatile memories to process data at IoT sensor nodes. Ferroelectric non-volatile memory devices are fast, low power and high endurance, and could greatly enhance energy-efficiency and allow flexibility for finer grain logic and memory. This paper will describe the basics of ferroelectric devices for both hysteretic (non-volatile memory) and negative capacitance (steep slope switch) devices, and then project how these can be used in low-power logic cell architectures and fine-grain logic-in-memory (LiM) circuits.

Bezpečnost provozu na pozemních komunikacích ve vztahu k jejich proměnným a neproměnným parametrům / Objectification of Calculation of Passing Sight Distance Parameters

Overtaking maneuver is very complex event influenced by many parameters. The most important parameters are vehicle performance, longitudinal slope, the speed at the beginning of the maneuver, the reaction time of the driver. Overtaking distance at CSN 73 6101 is determined on the basis of a simplified physical model. It considers constant speed of vehicles (overtaking and overtaken) and it does not consider a longitudinal gradient of road. This calculation is used for several decades and it is required to verify this procedure. That was the purpose of this work. Detailed physical model was performed for several types of passenger vehicles, performance curves and gear changes were included too. Distances between vehicles at the beginning and in the end of the maneuver were chosen with regard to reaction times of drivers. Distances were compared with conclusions of observation studies. Input values of some parameters were determined by own measurement and compared with data reported in the literature. The analysis was performed using the video camera positioned at the front and rear of the vehicle. For selected vehicle were conducted simulations testing the influence of particular parameters. The parameters with the biggest influence were longitudal slope of the road and rolling friction. To achieve results useful for a possible regulations update for the design of roads another simulation models for 43 variants of passenger cars with different engines and transmissions were done. The vehicles were divided into categories based on engine capacity and engine power (up to 1400 ccm, over 1400 ccm; 66 kW to over 66 kW). Results were compiled in tabular form that could be used to discuss modifications to CSN 73 6101 Design of roads.
