Euroscepticism – from 1986 to 2020 and beyond

Öman, Béatrice January 2020 (has links)
A semi-systematic literature review of research carried out on the evolution of the concept of Euroscepticism since the term first was reportedly used in 1986 with special focus on articles published around the year before the 2019 European Parliament elections and to this date. The thesis was conducted with a particular interest in gathering more knowledge on using an evidence-based method in political science. The purpose was twofold, therefore: one to see how the concept itself has evolved in research, in terms of definition and salience as well as in terms of measuring and explanatory factors, and the other to see if the method used is appropriate to this purpose. From the data gathered, it can be said that the method is pertinent and relevant when assembling research from a widespread and multifaceted area in terms of geography and content, since it is meant to avoid the pitfalls of ‘picking and choosing’ data. The articles thus uncovered have shown that there is a red thread in research on Euroscepticism, that its context has changed and therefore its content, and that Euroscepticism 2020 is a salient issue.

Stiffness pairing in soft-hard active-passive actuators

Ehrenhofer, Adrian 07 November 2024 (has links)
Soft-Hard Active-Passive Embedded Structures (SHAPES) are composites that respond to the environments in which they are embedded. This reaction can be a mechanical actuation, but also an intrinsic computation that yields an adaptation as a result. The actuation capabilities primarily depend on the stiffness combination of the involved materials. Stiffness includes both material parameters (depending on the chosen material model, e.g., the Young's modulus) and geometry parameters (depending on the type of structure, e.g., the beam height). The active properties can be included using the Stimulus Expansion Model, which is based on the analogy of the active reponse to thermal expansion. SHAPES can be designed according to three different behaviors, Case I constrained, Case II combined and Case III free. In the current work, these cases, the modelling and design background, and various examples are presented.

A plane wave is scattered by an acoustically soft, hard or penetrable sphere, covered by a penetrable non-concentric spherical lossless shell which disturbs the propagation of the incident plane wave field. There is exactly one bispherical coordinate system that fits the given two-sphere obstacle. If the wavelength of the incident field is much larger than the radius of the exterior sphere, Low Frequency Theory reduces the scattering problem to a sequence of potential problems which can be solved iteratively Applying the corresponding boundary value problem for each case, a set of two equations results as well as a recurrence equation with three unknown sequence of coefficients for zero-th order, and the first-order approximation is obtained, by solving two sets of two equations and a recurrence equation with three unknown sequence coefficients each for the soft core or the calculation of the zero–th order coefficients of the hard or penetrable core, leads to a solution of a linear system of two equations with two unknown columns and tri-diagonal square matrices are coefficients of the unknown columns, while the first-order approximation is obtained, by solving two linear systems of two equations with four unknown columns and eight tri-diagonal matrices as coefficients of the unknown columns. Applying the cut-off method for soft, hard and penetrable sphere, the low-frequency coefficients of the zero-th and first-order for the near field as well as the first and second-order coefficients are obtained for the normalized scattering amplitude and cross section. Decreasing the distance d of the centres we conclude that the problem of scattering concentric cell cannot be considered special case of mentioned before problem. A plane wave is scattered by an acoustical soft acoustic sphere embedded into an acoustically lossless half space, which disturbs the propagation of the incident wave field. In the first step, the problem of sound diffraction by only a penetrable plane is solved, were the amplitudes of reflective and diffractive acoustical waves are calculated. In the second step the diffractive as an incident wave is scattered by the embedded acoustical soft sphere. The low frequency zero-th and first order coefficients of the near field are calculated for the soft scatterer and finally the scattering amplitude and cross-section are determined.

Surface Softness Tuning with Arch-Forming Active Hydrogel Elements

Ehrenhofer, Adrian, Wallmersperger, Thomas 07 November 2024 (has links)
Thin active elements can be added to rigid surfaces for the tuning of mechanical contact properties. The deformation of the active structures leads to the forming of arches. Depending on the forming of the arch, the force–displacement curve for contact becomes more or less steep. This can be understood as changing the interaction property between soft and hard. Herein, this concept is presented with hydrogels inside the active elements. Analytical derivations and finite-element simulation results for actuation and contact, based on the stimulus expansion model, are shown. This modeling approach appropriately captures the stimulus-dependent swelling properties of the material and can be easily applied in commercial finite-element tools. Special considerations are taken for the encapsulation of the active materials. A thin encapsulation foil allows 1) the use of swelling agents, such as water, without contaminating the contact objects. Furthermore, 2) appropriate water reservoirs for the swelling process can be included. The simulation results show that a surface softness tuning can be realized. The presented active material and dimensions are exemplary; the concept can be applied to other active materials for tuning surface interactions.
