'Who do you, Matthew, say the Son of Man is?' : Son of Man and conflict in the First Gospel

Witte, Brendon Robert January 2016 (has links)
This dissertation analyzes the Matthean “Son of Man” sayings, paying particular attention to their function in the development of conflict and in the anticipation of conflict resolution. The major premise is that the Son of Man is described in Mt as being at the center of the formative conflict that both forced the split between “this generation” of unbelieving Jews and the Matthean community and initiated the community’s Gentile-inclusive mission. According to Matthew, the Son of Man is not engaged in aimless conflict; he confronts and destroys his enemies for the sake of promoting his universal reign and establishing his Church, i.e., the “sons of the kingdom” (13.38), among the nations (cf. OG Dan 7.14; 24.14; 28.18-20). It is his authority over the kingdom of God, given subsequent to and consequent to the judgment of God against “this generation” in 70 CE, that enables the global mission of the disciples, provides the raison d’être for their mission, and assures the Christian community that the Son of Man will return at the eschaton to bring a final end to conflict. A corollary question that will be investigated is what Jesus’ idiomatic self-designation meant to Matthew and his community. The first chapter observes that despite the enormous literary footprint of the “Son of Man” debate, their is a notable lack of adequate studies concerning the Matthean “Son of Man” concept. What literature exists is surveyed, common trends in the debate are analyzed, and a statement of the thesis is provided. Based on the successes and failures of previous studies, it is suggested in the second chapter that the most promising method by which to examine the Matthean “Son of Man” concept is composition-critical and narrative-sensitive. This provides a rational for examining the Matthean “Son of Man” sayings in relation to the gospel’s structure and plot, both of which are shown to have been shaped by the theme of conflict. Finally, interpretive issues such as synoptic relationships, composition date, authorship, provenance, and the status of Matthew’s community are discussed. Chapters Three and Four examine the “Son of Man” sayings in Matthew 8-13 and 16-26 respectively to determine how each saying contributes to the evolving Matthean “Son of Man” concept and the unfolding conflict between Jesus and his “sons” and Satan and his “sons” (cf. 13.37-39). It is shown that the “Son of Man” sayings are not a heterogeneous mixture of “earthly,” “suffering,” and “future” statements that simply concern the life and ministry of Jesus. Matthean redaction has woven the “Son of Man” sayings into a grand tapestry of meaning, sewn into the conflict that precipitated the split of the Matthean community from “this wicked and adulterous generation.” It is shown that the advancement of conflict is matched by the resolution of conflict. This resolution occurs in two stages. According to Matthew, God began to resolve the conflict with “this generation” in 70 CE, whence he destroyed Jerusalem and bestowed upon the Son of Man universal dominion and an everlasting kingdom. The Son of Man’s empowerment enables him to preside over the Eschatological Assize, consequently fulfilling the predictions of end-times reprisal given to “this generation” (cf. 11.20-24; 12.39-42) and bringing a permanent end to conflict. Chapter Five examines the allusion to Old Greek Dan 7.13-14 in 28.18-20 and its connection to the commissioning of the disciples. It is suggested that “all authority in heaven and on earth” is not obtained through a supposed proleptic experience of the Parousia in Jesus’ resurrection or death, or simply by means of his son-ship to the Father. Rather, the Son of Man’s universal sovereignty, by which the Matthean community is empowered to “make disciples of all nations,” was received from the Ancient of Days after the Temple’s ruination in 70 CE. That is, the exaltation of the Son of Man, which is physically signaled by the destruction of Herod’s Temple, initiated and provided justification for the Matthean community’s schism from “this generation” and their mission to the Gentiles. Additionally, the divine empowerment of the Son of Man grounded the community’s eschatological hope for conflict resolution. This chapter ends with a discussion of how this theory impacts one’s understanding of Matthean christology, missiology, and salvation-history. The final chapter summarizes the preceding evidence, details the contributions of this dissertation, and concludes that for Matthew “Son of Man” is more than a mere signal word for speech about Jesus’ death, resurrection, and exaltation. “Son of Man” is a self-designation employed by Jesus that Matthew has interpreted as a title referring to Jesus’ office as the exalted human-like figure of Old Greek Dan 7. Like the enigmatic “man” of Daniel’s night-vision, the Son of Man is the representative of the elect who remains with his community “until the end of the age” (28.20).

Szabo Cukierman, Hector Daniel January 2017 (has links)

The ‘My Lai Massacre’ Narrative in American History and Memory: A Story of American Conservatism

Stewart, Eric January 2015 (has links)
This thesis uses the referent “My Lai Massacre” to refer to the mythic memory of what happened in Son My on 16 March, 1968. It argues that it is a fitting name for the way it captures the ethnocentrism of the memory in the name by perpetuating an American misnomer rooted in ignorance. It also singularizes the scope of horrors of the day, and fails to differentiate ‘the massacre’ from the domestic turmoil with which it was conflated. The My Lai Massacre narrative as it currently exists in American history and memory is ‘exceptionalist’ in that it incorporates and excludes story elements in such a way that casts it as a highly exceptional occurrence. The main argument of this thesis is that American history and memory of the ‘My Lai Massacre’ have, to a large degree, been defined and shaped by conservative influences. In the time since the news of the atrocities became public this has manifested itself in a number of way and is not confined to conservative histories of the war. Despite the hold liberal orthodox scholarship has on the history of the war, there remains within it, this thesis argues, a conservative trend regarding the massacres in Son My. Reactions, explanations, and rationalizations that appeared in early conservative responses to news of the massacres have survived into a wider ideological spectrum of Vietnam scholarship and memory than that from which it came. Although it seems at first consideration an unlikely event from which a usable past might be constructed, the My Lai Massacre does get used in a didactic manner. This thesis examines some of the most prevalent ways the memory of My Lai functions as a usable past. The My Lai Massacre has been incorporated into a number of ‘lessons of the past’ that tend to be derived from conservative narratives of the war.

Les nouveaux formats sonores dans le champ de l'esthetique du cinéma / New sounds in the field of the esthetics in the cinema

Ouédraogo, Adama 05 December 2013 (has links)
Introduced to the cinema a few decades after the birth of this art, sound has always felt the place is hers. Even today, although much progress as synchronization with the image, the acceptance of sound in film creation, improved sound quality, the spatial-wrap are among its other elements greet. The latter, specializing and envelope with the audiovisual films seem to be left to thank you for firms that compete in the market. Documents that address this area are hardly except in some few lines reviewed. Questions remains unanswered why the use of multichannel sound in cinema? What could be the reasons for the continued aesthetic according to Aristotelian and Kantian theories of art?

[en] BEING A FATHER IN CONTEMPORANEITY: MASCULINE CONCEPTIONS / [pt] SER PAI NA CONTEMPORANEIDADE: CONCEPÇÕES MASCULINAS

DENISE BERNARDI 15 September 2021 (has links)
[en] This thesis aimed to investigate transformations in the exercise of paternity, from the perspective of the father. A qualitative research was carried out in which 15 primiparous parents were interviewed. The results were analyzed according to the content analysis method in its categorical aspect. From the material evaluation, five categories of analysis emerged: conception of paternity, male participation in pregnancy and childbirth, paternal care practices, transition to parenting, and postpartum and paternity leave. For the purpose of presenting the development of the investigation, the thesis was divided into five articles. In the first, the conception of paternity in the gestational period and in the first months of the baby s life for parents was investigated. The results revealed that the experiences lived by man in the family of origin influence the conception of fatherhood, especially the relationship established with the father himself is highlighted in this process. In the second, the father s participation during pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum was studied, and it was found that, at present, the father is more present in the clinical gestational context. Its presence in these environments has been recognized as beneficial to the mother-father-son triad. In the third article, the care practices carried out by the father in the baby s first year of life were investigated, from a male perspective, and it was observed that old conceptions that the mother is the main responsible for the children still remain. In the fourth, we analyzed the challenges experienced by the father in the transition to parenting after birth and in the first months of his son s life. The results suggested that, in view of the acquisition of the parental role, personal projects often need to be set aside, an aspect that can generate a decline in marital satisfaction. Finally, in the fifth article, the perception of parents about the expansion of paternity leave in Brazil was investigated. The data revealed that the current paternity leave, to which most Brazilian fathers are entitled, does not meet the needs of the family in the postpartum period. More broadly, it was concluded that the paternal identity is in transition, given that the traditional role of men as provider and more focused on the provision and security of the home, nowadays, merges with that of a more participative and engaged in child care.

On the Making of Man: A Qualitative Study on the Meaning of Motherhood, Issues of Masculinity, and the Experience of Raising a Son

Hansen, Katherine Gentry 13 November 2002 (has links)
This qualitative research focuses on the meanings that contemporary, working women assign to the experience of motherhood, how the role of work intersects the role of motherhood, and how these women are constructing and deconstructing gender with their preschool-age sons. Feminist and symbolic interactionist perspectives are utilized to ground the study empirically. The results are based on the in-depth interviews the researcher conducted with five working mothers living in a rural, college town. / Master of Science
