Managing physical abuse among learners in a girls high school in KwaZulu-Natal : a case study

This study focuses on the manner in which the School Management Team (SMT) manages physical abuse among learners, providing guidelines on how to act in a proactive and constructive manner. A qualitative approach was used and the research was designed as a single case study. National education specific law and policy regulating learner misconduct, the SMT’s management of physical abuse of learners as well as the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Basic Education’s policies were used to benchmark my evaluation of current management practices with regard to physical abuse among learners against such laws and policies. The research findings on the current management practices, factors that contribute to physical abuse, reasons and effects of physical abuse and the role of the SMT in handling physical abuse were based on an analysis of School A’s Code of conduct for learners and its Discipline Policy and information extracted by means of interviews. / Educational Leadership and Management / M. The knowledge of learners with hearing impairment on the transmission modes of HIV

Awareness and knowledge of the different transmission modes of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) serves as a vital component of the efforts to prevent the spread of HIV. This quantitative descriptive cross sectional study was conducted with 99 learners from three public schools for learners with hearing impairment in KwaZulu- Natal (KZN). Data was collected via a self-designed questionnaire and analysed via the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). Recommendations based on the findings of poor levels of knowledge of transmission modes of HIV were made to motivate for greater awareness amongst these vulnerable learners / Health Studies / M.A. (Public Health)

An exploration of the teaching and learning of mathematics word problems in English to second language grade 8 learners in the Mafukuzela-Gandhi Circuit

Submitted in fulfillment of the requirements of the Degree of Master of Technology: Language Practice, Durban University of Technology, 2011. / The abolition of apartheid in South Africa in the late 1980s and the advent of democracy in 1994 resulted in dramatic changes in the education system. Of great significance to this study is the freedom African parents were allowed in choosing the medium of instruction to be used at schools. Surprisingly African parents encouraged their children to study through the medium of English mainly due to the education and employment opportunities English will provide them in the future (Mda, 1997). Now, seventeen years into democracy, English as a national language and the preferred medium of instruction has been blamed for poor results among ESL learners (Moreosole, 1998). Taylor, Muller and Vinjevold (2003: 54) point out that the difficulties associated with studying in a language other than one’s home language are more pronounced in mathematics, a subject which is strongly dependent on technical language proficiency. A section in the Grade 8 mathematics syllabus that is generally problematic for ESL learners is that of word problems (Wetzel, 2008). This is because ESL learners lack the language and reading skills needed to comprehend word problems, and the listening skills required to understand the educator’s explanation of the solution (Crandall, Dale, Rhodes and Spanos, 1985). To address the aims and objectives of this study, relevant literature was reviewed and various teaching strategies were examined to determine which strategies may be most effective in helping ESL learners solve word problems. Grounded within the Constructivist Learning Theory, this study was based on Vygotsky’s zone of proximal development and Bruner’s concept of scaffolding. Using a mixed methods approach, this study investigated problems that mathematics educators and ESL learners experience in the teaching and learning of word problems through the medium of English, and also identified strategies that mathematics educators use to teach word problems to ESL learners. iv Analysis of the educator questionnaire and the focus group interviews with learners revealed that ESL learners are experiencing difficulty solving word problems in English and educators are, to a large extent, adapting their teaching strategies when teaching them. The data also indicated that groupwork was considered by the majority of educators to be the most suitable method in the teaching of word problems to ESL learners, but sadly this method was used less frequently compared to whole class discussion and individual work due to discipline problems, the educators’ inability to handle group dynamics and the tendency for learners not to contribute to the group discussion. The findings also suggest that it is necessary for the educator to use a variety of teaching strategies to ensure that ESL learners enjoy success in mathematics. Based on the findings, this study makes recommendations regarding the teaching and learning of word problems and the use of adapted teaching strategies to foster active participation in lessons and group discussions, thereby increasing learner confidence and aiding in the understanding of English terminology used in mathematics word problems.

The hegemonic position of English as a medium of instruction at primary school level in KwaZulu-Natal, and its impact on parents' preferences of schooling for their children

Thesis in compliance with the requirements for the Doctor’s Degree in Technology: Language Practice, Durban University of Technology, 2012. / This study is concerned with the choices parents of second language learners make with regard to the schooling of their children in respect of medium of instruction, and explores the reasons why parents choose to disregard education in their mother tongue in favour of English as a medium of instruction. This is contrary to the Language in Education Policy, as the Department of Education instils in principals, educators and parents the need for children at primary school level to be taught in their mother tongue. The theoretical framework used to address the problem was the Critical Language Approach, this being an appropriate position from which to investigate language and power. A combination of questionnaires, interviews and observation was used to acquire data from parents and management in a large primary school in KwaZulu-Natal. After analysis of the data, which confirmed the hegemonic position of English as influencing choice of medium of instruction by parents of English second language learners, a model was developed to assist them to see the possible consequences of various choices. The model comprised a tenpoint questionnaire to identify needs, a flow chart diagram resulting from the needs analysis, a pictograph to assist stakeholders to understand the relevant choices available, and workshops to support the choice of medium of instruction. The value of the research, it is thought, lies in clarifying the various influences at play, in particular, the hegemonic position of English, and offering stakeholders a rational, rather than political or emotional basis for the choice of medium of instruction for second language learners, as well as pointing out the possible consequences of such choices.

The impact of Healing of Memories workshops : a case study of KwaZulu-Natal churches

In the case of South Africa, the apartheid regime has been the major cause of trauma for individuals as well as for communities. Although the Truth and Reconciliation Commission played a kind of healing role for traumatized individuals and communities, many were left unhealed and not reconciled. To bridge the gap left by the TRC in the context of trauma healing, some NGOs, such as the Institute for Healing of Memories, have taken up the task by organizing workshops aimed at healing affected individuals, churches and communities. In addition, they also helped people to forgive one another, reconcile and build peace. This research examines the impact of Healing of Memories workshops carried out in Durban some years ago. The participants reported significant progress towards trauma healing and reconciliation.

Bridging programme graduates' perceptions of their preparedness to manage a nursing unit

The purpose of this study was to describe the perceptions of the bridging programme graduates regarding their preparedness to manage a nursing unit .Quantitative; descriptive survey design was used with a structured questionnaire as data collection instrument. The sample included 58 bridging programme graduates who had completed their training at a private nursing school and was working at seven private hospitals in KwaZulu Natal. The graduates reported competence in performing some but not all management competencies addressed by this survey. Some graduates reported they were placed in charge of the nursing unit, in spite of not feeling competent, as early as in their first month. Recommendations with regard to nursing education, nursing practice and further research, specifically relating to improvement of management competencies for new graduates, were made / Health Studies / M.A. (Health Studies)

An assessment of the process and institutional requirements of monitoring and evaluation systems in government : a case study of the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Arts and Culture

Thesis (MPA)--Stellenbosch University, 2014. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This research study was motivated by the apparent disparities and incoherence in monitoring and evaluation (M&E) in government departments in South Africa. An in-depth study was undertaken with the objective to assess the processes followed in designing, developing and sustaining an M&E system. The study also looked into the institutional requirements and arrangements of M&E in government. The aim was formulate recommendations which could be modeled against to improve the M&E systems in government. In conducting a literature review, emphasis was placed on the theoretical and conceptual frameworks as well as policy and legislative frameworks relevant to M&E. The study followed a qualitative research design and included empirical and ethnological research which followed a case study approach. The primary data was sourced through semi-structured questionnaires or a research schedule which was administered through interviews. The sample considered was comprised of senior management of the Department of Arts and Culture, the M&E unit, focus groups and the Office of the Premier. A content analysis of the key documentation relating to M&E was also conducted. The study found that institutionalisation transcended beyond structural and organisational arrangements and looked into issues of governance, human resources, value systems, training, capacity and professional associations. However, the readiness assessment was not conducted to determine the level at which these traits were in the department. It was noted that the department had cultivated a sufficient culture of M&E within itself which was manifested its high placement on the agenda of management meetings. It was noted that there were sufficient policy and legislative frameworks to support M&E in government. It was also found there was no systematic and logical process followed, as recommended by Kusek and Rist (2004), in designing, building and sustaining results-based M&E in the department. Based on the findings, the researcher recommended that M&E training be provided to staff in the department and the readiness assessment be conducted thereafter in order to identify the gaps in this programme and put relevant interventions in place. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die navorsing is aan die gang gesit deur die klaarblyklike verskille en onsamehangendheid in monitering en evaluasie (M&E) in Regeringsdepartemente in Suid-Afrika. ’n Diepgaande studie is toe onderneem waarvan die doelwitte was om die prosesse te assesseer wat gevolg is in die ontwerp, ontwikkeling en onderhouding van ’n M&E-stelsel. Die studie het ook gekyk na watter vereistes en reëlings nodig is om M&E in die Regering in te stel. Die doel daarvan was om aanbevelings te maak wat gebruik kan word om die M&E-stelsels in die Regering te verbeter. Met die navorsing wat in literatuur gedoen is, is die klem gelê op die teoretiese en konsepsionele raamwerke sowel as op beleids- en wetgewende raamwerke wat met M&E verband hou. Die studie het ’n kwalitatiewe navorsingsontwerp gevolg en het empiriese en etnologiese navorsing ingesluit wat ’n gevallestudie-benadering gevolg het. Die primêre data is verkry deur semi-gestruktureerde vraestelle of ’n navorsingslys wat toegepas is deur middel van onderhoude. Die groep wat as voorbeeld gebruik is, het bestaan uit senior-bestuur van die Departement, M&E-eenheid, fokusgroepe en die Kantoor van die Premier. ’n Ontleding van die inhoud van sleuteldokumentasie wat met M&E verband hou, is ook gedoen. Die studie het gevind dat institusionalisering verder gestrek het as strukturele en organisatoriese reëlings en het gekyk na kwessies van bestuur, menslike hulpbronne, waardestelsels, opleiding, kapasiteit en professionele verenigings. Maar die gereedheidsassessering is nie gedoen om te bepaal op watter vlakke hierdie eienskappe in die Departement bestaan nie. Daar is opgelet dat die Departement ’n voldoende kultuur van M&E in die Departement aangekweek het wat geopenbaar is deurdat M&E hoog op die agenda van bestuursvergaderinge geplaas is. Daar is opgelet dat daar voldoende beleids- en wetgewende raamwerke in die Regering is om M&E te ondersteun. Daar is ook gevind dat geen stelselmatige en logiese proses gevolg is, soos aanbeveel deur Kusek en Rist, in die ontwerp, ontwikkeling en onderhouding van Resultaat-gegronde M&E in die Departement nie. Die navorser het, op grond van die bevindings, aanbeveel dat opleiding oor M&E aan personeel in die Departement gegee word en die gereedheidsassessering daarna gedoen word om gapings te identifiseer en toepaslike tussenkomste in werking te stel.

The economic impact of tourism in Underberg, Kwazulu-Natal

Thesis (MBA)--University of Stellenbosch, 2011. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Information on tourism trends and visitor numbers is often lacking at a local level. Municipalities and stakeholders are often unaware of important tourism trends that affect their businesses. This is especially true for the rural town of Underberg in KwaZulu-Natal. To address this lack of information an exploratory study has been conducted to estimate the economic impact of tourism in the district. Surveys and interviews were used to gain insight into the behaviour and expenditure of visitors and into the business of accommodation establishments. The findings of these surveys allow for estimations of tourism impact to be calculated for different levels of occupancy in the district. These provide an indication of the magnitude of the tourism sector in the district. The calculations also take into account the secondary effects of tourism through the use of applicable tourism multipliers that provide an idea of the total effect of tourism on the economy. The study demonstrates that certain segments spend more than others and confirms the notion that nature and adventure tourism activities are the major contributors to the tourism economy. The effect of events, timeshare and the ownership of property is also taken into account in these estimations as they have a tangible impact on the economy. While only an estimation, the results indicate quite clearly that tourism is a significant contributor to the district’s economy. An analysis of employment created by tourism, along with an applicable tourism multiplier, suggests that up to 30 per cent of the employed people in the district are directly or indirectly employed by tourism activities. Key to the development of tourism in the district is the need for proper destination management that will lead to an increase in visitor days as well as an increase in tourism revenue. The information generated here will assist in devising strategies for proper destination management. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Inligting oor toerismetendense en besoekergetalle is gewoonlik gebrekkig op ’n plaaslike vlak. Munisipaliteite en rolspelers is dikwels onbewus van belangrike tendense wat hul ondernemings beïnvloed. Dit geld veral vir die landelike dorp Underberg in KwaZulu-Natal. Om aandag te skenk aan hierdie gebrek aan inligting word ’n verkennende studie onderneem om die ekonomiese impak van toerisme in die distrik te bepaal. Vraelyste en onderhoude is ingespan om insig te verkry in die gedrag en besteding van besoekers, en die ondernemings van akkommodasieverskaffers. Die bevindinge van hierdie opnames maak dit moontlik om die geraamde toerisme-impak vir verskillende vlakke van okkupasie in die gebied te bereken. Dit verskaf ’n aanduiding van die omvang van die toerismesektor in die distrik. Die berekeninge neem ook die sekondêre uitwerking van toerisme in ag en gebruik toepaslike toerismevermenigvuldigers om beter insig in die algehele uitwerking van toerisme op die ekonomie te verkry. The impact of co-operative finance on household income : a case study of co-operatives in KwaZulu-Natal

Thesis (MDF)--Stellenbosch University, 2015. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study is on the impact of cooperative societies on capital formation using a case study of selected cooperatives in Kwazulu Natal province of South Africa. The study is a novel empirical investigation in that focuses on impact of cooperative societies financing on members and how that may translate into significant increase in household incomes. The study assess and evaluates the roles played by cooperative societies’ financing and loans services on members’ economic condition particular their business expansion, profitability and later on improvements in household incomes. Using focus group discussion and questionnaire, the study uncovers the activities of cooperative societies located in both urban and rural communities within KZN Province. The study provides some evidence on the importance of leaving conditions after member access to cheap and affordable loans and provides some insights into the development of rural businesses, how complex they are, and how they require more input than just the financing received through cooperative loans as a final end. It also breaks new ground in informal cooperative operations, community improvement and rural finance research by providing a peculiarity between standard of living and quality of life variables in measuring and determining the economic condition of rural livelihoods and the production of circle of New Institutional Economics theory that the role of cooperatives to the members involve financial capital, physical capital and social capital which are interrelated. This serves to properly distinguish and appropriately identify the roles of cooperative societies in rural finance to increase in household income, ownership of assets and acquisition of enterprise assets. However, the study reveals that access to funds and participation in the cooperative does not lead to enterprise profitability, thus less capital accumulation while rural financial needs are more accessible from cooperatives than other sources. From its findings, this study identified and discussed potential areas for the improvement of cooperative societies that could be of benefit to any urban and rural finance providers and the cooperative members.
