Retrocession, partition and sporting communities in fractured societies : baseball in Taiwan and Gaelic games in Ireland, 1884-1968 / Baseball in Taiwan and Gaelic games in Ireland, 1884-1968Harney, John James 30 January 2012 (has links)
This dissertation examines the roles of popular sports baseball and Gaelic Games in Taiwanese and Irish society respectively between the years 1884 and 1968. During this period, the spread of each sport in popularity and the subsequent increased profile in the public realm highlighted similar challenges faced by the societies of each territory as inhabitants of minor players in a global political system dominated by major powers.
The development of Taiwanese baseball and its spread in popularity during the colonial period reveals the extent to which divisions between colonial Japanese and local Taiwanese blurred beyond the parameters of governmental efforts at coexistence and assimilation. Two teams in particular, the Nenggao team of 1924-25 and the KANO team of 1931, give evidence of a colonial Taiwanese sporting culture that featured strengthening connections with sporting culture in Japan. In both cases, baseball displayed potential as an integrating force in colonial Taiwanese society between social groups resident on the island rather than as a source for opposition to colonial rule. This is in direct contrast to Irish society, where the resurgence in popularity of Gaelic Games occurred within the political context of exclusivist nationalism. Gaelic Games existed as cultural markers of an Irish culture defined by a Gaelic ethnic identity and political commitment to an Irish nation state, choosing to ignore the realities of partition and the existence of a sizable Loyalist community in the north of the country.
This viewpoint persisted until the late 1960s, when the eruption of paramilitary violence in Northern Ireland irrevocably changed the terms of Irish political participation. At the same time, Taiwanese baseball transitioned from a shared cultural form between Taiwan and Japan to a potent avenue for emerging Taiwanese political voices in 1968 with the widely celebrated success of the Hongye schoolboy baseball team. Baseball’s popularity had persisted in the face of ambivalent attitudes among ruling Guomindang officials following retrocession, but the Hongye victory marked the introduction of specific political overtones to Taiwanese baseball, bringing an end to decades of the sport’s primary role as an act of public participation with limited political connotations. / text

Wrestling with the Past: How National Wrestling Lost Its Regional HeritageTreadway, William T. 12 1900 (has links)
Through a combination of stringent and deceptive corporate control of sources, as well as an academic blind spot on certain low-brow subcultures, there has been a lack of serious study of the various regional professional wrestling traditions that crossed the United States until the end of the 1980s. An in-depth examination of a wide range of books, newsletters, and interviews shows a rich history with a deep economic, social, and creative diversity that has been largely ignored as the industry has moved towards monopolization under Vincent Kennedy McMahon. The various regions are divided into three groups: those that closed on their own, those that fell in competition with McMahon, and those that survived into the era of national corporate pro wrestling. This organization challenges the narrative that regional pro wrestling came to an end solely due to the business power of McMahon. The first group looks at Northern California, Southern California, Georgia, and North Texas. The second group examines the independent wrestling companies Mid-South Wrestling and the American Wrestling Association, and their attempts to compete with McMahon on a national level. The group also explores how the intense local fan bases in Portland and Memphis buoyed the local pro wrestling promotions for a time from outside competition from McMahon. The third group contains Jim Crockett Productions and the World Wide Wrestling Federation. These two organizations eventually became the two major corporate wrestling entities World Championship Wrestling and the World Wrestling Federation, respectively. A glossary of terms is included.

Invisible in Plain Sight: The Troubling Connections Between the National Hockey League and the Russian MafiaEnnion, Kayla 01 January 2014 (has links)
Professional sports leagues in North America have seen scandals, controversies, and tragedies. There is, however, a forgotten scandal that happened in the 1990s: the Russian Mafia came dangerously close to the National Hockey League. This thesis explores the alleged Mafia connections by examining newspaper and magazine articles and documentaries focused on the issue. The limited public response to allegations of Russian Mafia involvement is contrasted with other professional sports controversies that were met with an immediate response by the leagues and fans. How North Americans viewed Russians during the post-Soviet era is also explored in this paper. This thesis examines why evident Mafia involvement with National Hockey League players did not provoke attention and sanctions by the league nor an outcry from the fans. This study will conclude the League did not react to the allegations because it felt as if the games were not harmed directly. Also, hockey fans did not find the allegations surprising because of the media's constant reports of corruption within Russia's borders, especially involving organized crime. Perhaps the lack of reaction by the National Hockey League and its fans suggests why this particular scandal is forgotten a mere 20 years later.

Sports Fans Newsstand : Illustrated Stories of Title IX and the Fight for Gender Equality in SportsBaker, Lindsay January 2024 (has links)
My Masters project is a visual exploration of otherwise unrecorded girls' and women's sports stories from the pre-Title IX era. Title IX is an American piece of legislation that was signed into law in 1972. It states that any institution receiving federal funding cannot discriminate based on sex. This law would help to expand girls’ and women’s opportunities and participation in sports, although gender equality in American school athletics has yet to be achieved. The visual outcome of my project took the form of the Sports Fans Newsstand which housed a variety of ephemera such as comics, newspapers, sports trading cards, posters and pins--each element adding a new entry point to these complex stories.

A history of koshuisrugby at StellenboschHuys, Isabelle E. 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MSpor)--Stellenbosch University, 2008. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The Stellenbosch Rugby Football Club is the largest club in the world and the men’s
residence rugby competition is a component of that Club. The purpose of this study
was to document the origin, formation and activities of men’s residence rugby
(koshuisrugby) at Stellenbosch University.
The history of the University, the history of the Stellenbosch Rugby Football Club and a
little of the history of rugby in South Africa, and particularly at Stellenbosch, are given
as background information in the introduction to provide a global view.
The nucleus of this study concerns the development of koshuisrugby at Stellenbosch
University. An attempt has been made to reconstruct all gathered information as
accurately and as thoroughly as possible.
Although there is much popular writing on sport in South Africa, the supply of scientific
information is minimal. Studies such as these are thus hampered by the unavailability
of primary sports history information. As this study is sport-historically orientated, the
historic-scientific method has been implemented. Preference has been given to primary
sources of information. These sources included minutes, annual reports, reports of
annual meetings and reports of special meetings of the Stellenbosch Rugby Football
Club, as well as interviews with people involved with the club. Personal
correspondence and interviews have also been undertaken with the students and warders
of the various male residences. Secondary sources of information included University
of Stellenbosch publications, books, articles and newspapers.
The introductory section provides a broad outline of the history of rugby in
Stellenbosch; the sports fields of the University and especially the various venues of the
rugby club are dealt with. At first, games were played on the Braak, from where they
were moved to the Vlakte, the Paviljoenveld and later to Coetzenburg.
The second chapter is devoted to the formulation of the problem, defining of the study,
method of research and the evaluation of the resources. The third chapter describes all the male residences playing in the koshuisrugby
competition. Their history, emblems and their results in the koshuisrugby competition
are discussed in detail. Two other teams are also described. However, they are not
resident on the Stellenbosch Campus: the Elsenburg Agricultural College has also been
discussed as they take part in the koshuisrugby competition although they are not part of
the University. Medies (the Medical School) is part of the University and plays rugby
in the koshuisrugby competition, but is not situated on the Stellenbosch Campus.
The fourth chapter deals with the koshuisrugby competition. First, the origins and the
evolution of the five leagues are mapped out. Other competitions such as sevens rugby
and the first years’ tournament are also described.
Since koshuisrugby provided the playing field for experimenting with rules, a section
has been written on rule changes. Referees had to know and apply al those rule
changes, so something about the history and evolution of referees has also been given.
Finally, sponsors are discussed because their participation helped to make koshuisrugby
extremely popular.
histories-wetenskaplike metode daarvoor gevolg.
is.

"You've got to have tangibles to sell intangibles" : ideologies of the modern American stadium, 1948-1982Lisle, Benjamin Dylan 29 September 2010 (has links)
This dissertation investigates the modern American stadium from the late 1940s to the early 1980s, examining the ideologies that shaped these monumental buildings and the meanings people affixed to them. Stadiums were significant components of the modern landscape, frequently hosting massive audiences, costing tens of millions of public dollars, and uniquely symbolizing cities and their citizens’ civic spirit. Through interpretations of these stadiums’ architectural expression, spatial constitution, discursive construction, and visual representation, this study explores the ideological landscape of the modern United States, expands understandings of modern space, and examines what it meant to be “modern” throughout this period. A response to the old stadiums they replaced—largely masculine, inter-class, inter-racial, rambunctious places locked into run-down neighborhoods—new stadiums eliminated traditional and iconic sites of urban diversity, reconstituting sports spaces as modern, suburban, and technological. They re-gendered stadium space, integrating women into it as consumers and service workers. They re-classed stadium space, outfitting it with exclusive restaurants and private luxury boxes. They technologized stadium space, conspicuously loading it with exploding scoreboards and massive video screens. They re-racialized stadium space, relocating it from old ballparks adjacent dense African-American neighborhoods to open sites along freeways convenient to booming white suburbs or as anchors to clean-sweep downtown redevelopment. They fundamentally altered stadium experience, shifting emphasis from games on the field to entertainments and consumption opportunities around it. In doing all these things, modern stadiums materialized an ideological apparatus privileging a range of values and practices including gender distinction in mixed-gender settings, socio-economic and racial segregation, technological scientism, and consumption-oriented stimulation. Roy Hofheinz, the force behind the iconic Houston Astrodome’s planning and execution, fully understood the relationship of the material and the ideological; as he put it, “You’ve got to have tangibles to sell intangibles.” To illustrate these points, this dissertation engages postwar plans for futuristic new stadiums from designers like Norman Bel Geddes and Buckminster Fuller; the construction of new stadiums in the mid-1960s in New York, Houston, and St. Louis; and the increasingly routinized modern stadium of the 1970s—a controversial expression of modern progress for some, modern artificiality for others. / text

Fair play jako jádro sportovní etiky v obecném povědomí i z hlediska genderové diference / Fair play as the Core of Sports Ethics in General Awareness and in Terms of the Gender GapHolas, Josef January 2013 (has links)
Title: Fair play as the Core of Sports Ethics in General Awareness and in Terms of the Gender Gap Objectives To look at the concept of fair play from various points of view, and not only that of sports. Analysing fair play not only as appropriate behaviour in sports but also as conduct to which we ascribe a certain moral value and towards which something motivates us. To interpret the actions rewarded with the top prize of the Czech Fair Play Club. To compare the view of fair play among active athletes and people who play sports recreationally or not at all. To discover whether there is a difference in the male and female understanding of fair play - whether in terms of sports or not. Method The theoretical section is based on relevant research and consists of a conceptual analysis and comparison of texts. The practical section includes an investigation by questionnaire among 65 respondents, from active athletes, to recreational sportsmen of greater or lesser intensity, to those who hardly play sports at all. Interpretation of the answers to 15 of the questions is focused on breaking down the target group according to age, gender and their attitude towards sports. The selection of the respondents was made entirely randomly, with questionnaires sent out to people from the region of Prague and their...

An oral history of England international rugby union players, 1945-1995Hall, Joe January 2018 (has links)
This thesis is the first oral history study of English rugby union. Through personally conducted interviews, it focuses on the experiences of men who played rugby union for England in the post-war, amateur era, and considers what they can tell us about both the sport and the society of which it was a part. The period it covers begins with the end of the Second World War, in 1945, and ends when rugby union ceased to be an amateur sport, in 1995. These fifty years were a time of both change and continuity, and it is a primary concern of this thesis to consider the extent of each in both rugby union and in wider society. Through looking at, in particular, English rugby union’s links with education, its relationship with work in a period in which its players were amateur, and its place on the spectrum of class, this study demonstrates, above all, the durability of rugby union’s social core, even in the midst of outward change to the sport. In doing so, it makes an important contribution to the historiography of both British sport and post-war Britain more generally, arguing for consideration of social continuity among a field largely dominated by notions of change. It also constitutes a unique study of a particular group of middle-class men, and demonstrates that sport – and oral history – can add much to our understanding of post-war social history.
