"The Hardest Button to Button" - A Critical Analysis of Jack White and the White Stripes

Thorson, Garrett 28 March 2013 (has links)
Since their original formation in the summer of 1997, Detroit rock duo, the White Stripes have occupied a formidable and well-publicized position within the context of American music. Despite this accomplished status, the majority of discourse surrounding the White Stripes has tended toward sensationalized fandom or immediate and callous dismissal, with little investigation as to how the duo have been so polarizing. Recognizing a key analytical void in such a treatment of the duo, this thesis examines the White Stripes with the tools of postmodern thought, considering their artful use of kitsch and sincerity in their image, musical language, and aesthetic. In so doing, it offers much-needed insight into the band’s widespread appeal as a blues revival band at the end of the rock era.

Morphometry and Environment of Asymmetric Non-sorted Stripes in the Abisko mountains, Northern Sweden

Högström, Elin January 2011 (has links)
Because the mechanisms that lie behind the formation and preservation of asymmetric non-sorted stripes have not yet been established, and their particular shape has been given little attention by authors before, this study aims at giving a better understanding of the landforms and the environmental conditions under which they exist, with emphasis on under what circumstances the asymmetry develops. For this purpose, the roles of vegetation and snow were key concerns as well as the wind regime in relation to the vegetation, snow and morphology. The study consists of a thorough description of non-sorted stripes in the valley Gohpasvaggi, near Abisko field station in Northern Sweden. It comprises investigations of the ground thermal regime, soil moisture and other environmental parameters considered likely to have implications for the occurrence and appearance of the landforms. Results showed that the non-sorted stripe continues to the depth of ca 40-50 cm in the form of distortions of the deeper horizons, whereas the asymmetry is limited to the shallower A-horizon. In the stripe ridges there seems to be an upward movement in the soil that is likely physically driven (e.g. frost action). The furrow between the stripe ridges appears to be a quiescent area with normal soil development. The net downward movement here is likely biologically driven. The asymmetry can be related to the wind based on their corresponding direction and on the understanding of how feedback mechanisms involving wind, snow and vegetation works to maintain the micro topography. Differential frost heave and free convection of water in soil are plausible explanations for the origin of the non-sorted stripes in Gohpasvaggi. The current maintenance of the stripes is likely a combination of biological, physical and hydrological mechanisms that interact and depend on each other.

Barturen, Mariana 11 June 2014 (has links)
In this thesis we have introduced the study of the Fe1−xGax alloy grown as monocrystalline thin films of nanometric thicknesses. Our work was of experimental nature and consisted in a magnetic characterization that included the study of magnetic anisotropies, magneto-elastic coupling coefficients and magnetic domains. For this work we principally used three techniques: ferromagnetic resonance, magnetoelastic coupling measurement by deflection of cantilever and magnetic force microscopy . Anisotropies were studied in function of thickness, concentration and atomic structure, achieving an extensive description of the system. It was observed that the films conserved many of the bulk material characteristics, but at the same time they present some singularities that make them different. Particularly, a strong out of plane anisotropy was detected (ten times larger than the anisotropy inside the plane), which has a magnetocrystalline contribution, a magnetoelastic contribution and another one of unknown origin. To explain this last term which we put forward the hypothesis of an anisotropic distribution of Ga pairs (more Ga pairs out of plane than in plane). This last contribution could be modeled by adapting Cullen’s phenomenological model. As a consequence of this out of the plane anisotropy, magnetic domains with stripe pattern appear, for adequate thicknesses. These domains can rotate in the direction of the saturation applied magnetic field.

Structures modulaires de bandes pliées / Modular structures from folded stripes

Genevaux, Chloé 20 June 2013 (has links)
Taking as a starting point a linear folded stripe, this research does not address the design of pleated surfaces but that of reticular structures. The design of structures with "holes" from folded stripes is an original angle of approach. From a conceptual point of view, the continuity caused by folds transforms the usual conception by separated nodes and bars of reticular structures. The use of continuous linear stripes is one possible approach to make more efficient the design of complex shapes by minimizing the produced offcuts. This research investigates new methods of designing curved shapes. The aims of this research are:- A classification of different possible approaches encountered when conceiving from folded stripes.- The study a modular folded elements which assembly allows the generation of various curved surfaces : the geometry of different configurations of folded stripes and the assemblies allowed will be described

Blandband / Blandband

Sjögren, Sara January 2011 (has links)
Throughout ten weeks I have been creating the Blandband collection. The starting point was stripes and trompe l’oeil. I wanted to explore what constitutes a stripe. In the beginning of the project I decided on a color palette containing partly of vibrant colors, and partly two shades of gray, black and white. I have used a basic design method with five phases: Research and Positioning, Concept generation, Concept development, Concept realisation, Presentation and Communication. The collection Blandband consists of three patterns: Lena, Samantha and Tommy, each pattern in two different colorways. This is the report of my bachelor thesis Blandband. / Program: Textildesignutbildningen

Development of Colloid Displacement Lithography Platforms for Sensor Applications

Thugu, Mahesh 01 August 2013 (has links)
In this work, Poly (diallyldimethylammonium) chloride - (PDDA) was used as a base layer for developing colloid displacement lithography platforms for sensor applications. Previous work shows that glass coated with PDDA and exposed to gold acts as a good platform for colloid displacement lithography. However, for actual sensor applications, electrical isolation of individual sensor sections must be achieved. This is attempted by laying down a 40 μm stripe of PDDA on a cleaned substrate and coating that stripe with gold colloid. The size of 40 μm or less in width is set as the target to fit within the scan window of the AFM. Stripes wider than about 40 μm would be difficult to efficiently pattern with colloid displacement lithography. While the goal of 40 μm wide stripes was achieved with sufficiently diluted PDDA solution, it was found to be difficult to adsorb sufficient amounts of gold colloid on those stripes before the stripes were lost from the glass substrate. Further, electroless deposition was found to produce only a small amount of gold on the PDDA surface without colloid nucleation sites being present.

Ljusprojektioner och ränder : om magiska ögonblick och skapandet av en gestaltningsmetod / Light projections and stripes : -about magical moments and creating a performing method

Hyrske, Fanny January 2015 (has links)

Toys''R''Cloth : An alternative interpretation of Kente cloth

Hansen, Felicia January 2020 (has links)
This degree work places itself within the field of textile design, with an artistic approach. The motive with this work is to introduce Kente cloth as a textile expression to be developed as a contemporary textile technique. The aim is to explore ways of reinterpreting the West African weaving technique of Kente cloth in combination with the use of recycled toys in order to create contemporary artistic textile designs. The design method consisted of workshops that focused on the deconstruction of the technique and the categorisation of toys. Experimental sketches on the handloom and jacquard machine were produced. The outcome of this design work is a collection of three handwoven artistic textile designs. Toys’’R’’Cloth engages the viewer to produce more sustainable designs by using recycled toys as material reuse. This work and its design method have the potential to be developed further and applied onto other textile techniques.

Magnetism in Ni80Fe20 and Ni80Fe20/NiO Nano-stripes

Mirza, Mueed 22 August 2012 (has links)
Ni80Fe20 and Ni80Fe20/NiO films and nano-stripes were characterized magnetically through AC and DC susceptibility measurements, and hysteresis loops as a function of field and temperature. While the near-pattern films were characterized in the in-plane configuration only, the nano-stripes were characterized in parallel, transverse and the perpendicular field configurations. The effects of the constrained geometry on the coercivity, exchange bias field, and the superparamagnetic blocking temperature were studied. It was determined that the coercivity, exchange bias field and the superparamagnetic blocking temperature can be controlled, not only by using a patterned media instead of a plane film, but also by the orientation of that pattern.
