Managing an inclusive school: a case study of a pilot school in Swaziland

Zimba, Zondani January 2012 (has links)
Inclusive Education (IE) reflects the values, ethos, and culture of an education system committed to excellence by promoting education opportunities for all learners. IE is about building a more just society and ensuring the right to education for all learners regardless of their individual characteristics or difficulties (UNESCO: 2007). The kingdom of Swaziland has committed itself to high quality basic education which provides equal opportunities for all children and youth. This is evident in the Swaziland National Constitution (2006). To promote Education for All (EFA) as stated in the constitution, an IE Policy has been developed and a draft policy is in place. The programme has been operational since 2006. There are nine pilot schools and four teachers from each school who have been trained on how to handle pupils with disabilities. The programme will be rolled out to 608 primary schools by 2015. In this research, the goal was to investigate how a School Management Board responds to the challenges of managing an Inclusive School. This research is a qualitative interpretive case study based in one of the pilot schools in Mbabane in Swaziland. The study used document analysis, semi‐structured interviews and focus groups to collect data. The study revealed that the school has done much in accommodating IE as there are changes in management structures and approaches, organizational culture and operating procedures. On the other hand, there are still significant challenges such as a lack of knowledge of inclusion and negativity on the part of learners and parents. Other challenges include inadequate training for educators and lack of suitable infrastructure. The study concludes by recommending improved staff development programmes, infrastructure upgrades, acquiring appropriate teaching and learning resources and employing multidisciplinary personnel.

Inclusive education : challenges of students with disabilities in institutions of higher education in Namibia

Haihambo, Cynthy 08 1900 (has links)
This study was aimed to explore challenges of students with disabilities in higher education institutions in Namibia, as narrated and illustrated by themselves. Mixed methodologies, with specific reference to a small-scale quantitative survey and extensive qualitative design were employed as tools to understand the prevalence, extent and nature of challenges of students with disabilities in their pursuance of higher education in Namibia. Data was thus collected in two phases. The first phase consisted of a ten-item quantitative-survey which was largely used to determine the prevalence of students with disabilities in higher education institutions, and basic information regarding institutional standpoints pertaining to students with disabilities. Data acquired through this survey confirmed the prevalence of students with disabilities in Namibian higher education institutions. The second phase represented the qualitative design whereby data was collected through three main methodologies namely a narrative diary-based approach, a photo-voice and individual interviews. These methodologies ensured reliability of the data through triangulation. The study confirmed that inclusive education at the higher education level in Namibia was largely achieved through the goal of access, as all higher education institutions have admitted students with observable as well as hidden disabilities. However, a major finding of the study was that support and provision for students with disabilities was rendered in fragmented portions within and across institutions, and that the goals of equity and equality have not yet been achieved to the desired degree, if inclusive education was to become a reality for students with disabilities in higher education in Namibia. Students reported challenges related to physical accessibility of institutions; unavailability of educational material in alternative, as opposed to traditional formats; lack of sensitivity and skills of staff; as well as lack of structured support systems. The study also revealed that, notwithstanding the challenges students faced in their institutions, students with disabilities continued to perform their academic duties to the best of their abilities and were driven by their individual personal philosophies, many of which spoke of perseverance and courage, to make a success of their studies. / D. Exploring challenges experienced by physically challenged students at a further education and training college in KwaZulu-Natal Province

Buthelezi, Michael Mbongiseni 06 1900 (has links)
For physically challenged students, inequalities in further education begin with inequalities that have shaped the whole schooling system in South Africa. The limited provision that exists for physically challenged students at further education and training colleges in KwaZulu-Natal Province, especially black physically challenged students, means that for these students there is a very high level of exclusion from the education system. Many students with physical challenges still need an ally even in their basic accommodation. The focus of this research was on exploring challenges experienced by physically challenged students at “Mango” (pseudonym) Further Education and Training College in KwaZulu-Natal Province. That investigation was conducted in terms of the availability of resources for physically challenged students at Further Education and Training Colleges, the use of learner support services, accessibility of buildings for these students and the roles played by parents of physically challenged students at Further Education and Training Colleges in KwaZulu-Natal Province. This study was therefore designed to explore not only the challenges experienced by physically challenged students at Mango FET College in KwaZulu-Natal Province, but also their experiences and responses to such challenges. This research study was conducted with students who were physically challenged and their lecturers from Mango FET College in KwaZulu-Natal Province. The sample of the population included six participants who were physically challenged students and four participants who were lecturers teaching physically challenged students at Mango FET College. Furthermore, participants comprised both females and males who were doing different levels at the college, i.e. NQF level two, NQF level three and NQF level four students. The research study sought to explore the challenges experienced by such physically challenged students at Mango FET College in KwaZulu-Natal Province in order for the college to meet these students’ academic needs. Observations and semi-structured interviews were the main data-collection tools used in the study. Results from the current research study indicated that inaccessibility of buildings, lack of resources for physically challenged students, inadequate support from student support services and the college represented major barriers to the success of the physically challenged students at Mango FET College in KwaZulu-Natal Province. Moreover, although student support services are available, the entire college population, students and staff alike, should all be responsible for creating an inclusive environment where students with physical challenges can experience a sense of community and attitudes of embracing diversity and accommodating differences. The responsibility thus lies with all relevant role players of Mango FET College in KwaZulu-Natal Province who must work together to overcome social and academic barriers; to accommodate physically challenged students properly, provide them with accessible buildings, encourage parents to assist physically challenged students, endeavour to meet their academic, social and emotional needs and assist them to develop academically. In future, progress can be made through the increased coordination of student support services, building accessible buildings with ramps for physically challenged students, and providing adequate resources for these students. AEE. Educação Especial. The implementation of these rooms and its operation has been stimulated and funded harder from the late 2000s and therefore, in education terms can say that this is a relatively new experience and that is still being structured to within a Special Education policy in the inclusive perspective. Thus this study aimed to evaluate the implementation process of public policy SRM city of Jequié / BA. With a focus on the following specific objectives: To observe the SRM physical conditions, teaching materials and assistive technology resources; Analyze the organization process of the SRM work; Check the initial and continuous training of specialist teachers who work in SRM and identify the relations between the specialist teachers of SRM and teachers in an inclusive classroom. This research used qualitative research methods. It was a case study. Developed a document analysis and sought a better understanding of the local reality of Jequié conducting field research. In the field research were used semi-structured, focus group discussion and also direct observation. The subjects were the special education coordinator of the municipality and the teachers of the SRM. From this research, the existing problems were found in the functioning and organization of SRM, looks like a lack of further training, the multiplicity of affairs of the teachers, causing work overload, lack of cooperation from common classes of teachers and the little appreciation, lack of material, the integration of a multidisciplinary team and other factors. But it can be seen that despite the uncertainty, the work done with dedication has proven effective and some ills has been gradually overcome. Keywords: SRM. AEE. Special Education. Common Rooms.

Guerreiro, Elaine Maria Bessa Rebello 30 November 2011 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2016-06-02T19:44:10Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 3990.pdf: 4846195 bytes, checksum: fb43b15ce712e087fb4583f151f8e072 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2011-11-30 / The increasing number of disabled students in higher education has raised issues that were, in the past, focused on basic education. Those issues create now an urgent need in higher education for physical infrastructure, pedagogical practices, technological resources and interpersonal relationships. Studies have been done on urban, architectonic, and attitudinal barriers, and also on the difficulties of access and permanency, reservation of vacancies and other issues regarding the inclusion of disabled people in higher education. Although some studies have shown the satisfaction of the student in higher education, the specific and necessary issues of the disabled student are still absent. Considering this, the objective of this research is to understand the level of satisfaction of the disabled student, regarding access and retention, through an instrument that was constructed for this purpose. For this, a higher education institution was chosen, in which the necessary characteristics for testing the instrument were present. Within this objective, it was proposed to identify the profile of this population, the level of satisfaction regarding the offered physical and operational structures, the level of satisfaction and attitude towards obstacles, as well as knowledge of legislation on accessibility and the NBR 9050/2004. This is a quantitativequalitative (emphasizing the first), exploratory, correlational, transversal study. The sample consisted of eighteen students: eight of them were visually disabled; six were physically disabled; three were hearing disabled; and one had learning difficulties. The constructed instrument was named Scale of Satisfaction and Attitudes of Disabled People SSA. As a result of the sample size, the techniques were used towards an exploratory rather than an inferential sense; therefore, the findings are restricted. It was verified that the average figures of the groups differ in a statistically significant way (p=0.065) by the Friedman Test, indicating that there are differences among structural, operational and psycho affective satisfaction, and the attitudes towards obstacles, in the studied group, at 90% certainty. Regarding the Structural factor, 50% of the sample tended to satisfaction, whereas the others tended to dissatisfaction and satisfaction with 25% on each side. In the Operational factor, 25% of the ones who answered to the items were dissatisfied, 50% tended to dissatisfaction and 25% were satisfied. In the Psycho Affective factor, 25% tend to satisfaction and 75% are satisfied. Regarding the Attitude towards obstacles, 25% showed certain neutrality or preference for omission, whilst 75% had a positive attitude. Regarding knowledge of legislation on accessibility and the norm NBR 9050/2004 of ABNT, it was observed that the disabled students who participated in the research that had no prior knowledge of the norm (approximately 60%) knew very little about the legislation on accessibility. The opposite is true for those who knew about the norm, that is, all of these knew the legislation on accessibility very well, and they also had a lower level of structural satisfaction. The participants with visual disability showed more knowledge regarding the legislation and the NBR 9050/2004. The students with visual and physical disabilities showed lower levels of satisfaction for the Structural factor, and the students with hearing disabilities showed lower levels for the Operational factor, especially when communicating with teachers and while in classes. However, the levels for the Psycho Affective and Attitude factors were within the range of satisfaction which compensates the low levels for Structural and Operational factors. Therefore, these findings allow us to state that the application of an instrument that measures the satisfaction of the disabled student in higher education is feasible and useful, in order to consider the direction the university is taking, when it comes to the access and the retention of these students.

It was held in public schools in a city in the central region of São Paulo state. The survey was conducted from 2009 to 2012 in five public schools of basic education. Our entry into this study was accompanied by two questions: from one side analyzes how teachers see the inclusion of students with disabilities who are enrolled in regular school, from the other side get to know how teachers understand about the occurrence of the inclusion in regular school. The theoretical reference on which we based to carry through this study was about issues such as: conception and background of the teachers, curriculum adaptations besides references that would enable is to analyze the discourses of the teachers who are working in elementary and high schools in São Paulo state. Our research question in this study was: how teachers see the school inclusion of students with disabilities enrolled in regular schools in different educational levels? The objectives of the study were: a) Identify how teachers see the school inclusion of students with disabilities included in the regular teaching in state schools for basic education; b) Analyze how they see the process for inclusion of these students; c) understand how the process has been occurring for inclusion in the perspective of teachers who teach classes to students with disabilities in different educational levels; d) Investigate whether the pedagogical practice of teachers working in basic education schools has contributed to the schools inclusion of students with disabilities in regular education. The methodological option was qualitative research whose investigative method was discourse analysis since our target of analysis were the discourse of teachers who are working in the public schools and teach students with disabilities. The results led is to reflect the need to invest in teacher training not only in the initial level, but also in continued education, because it was evident to is vehement necessity of training the teachers to teach students who are attending schools in various levels. Our considerations concerning this study are that if we do not invest in training teachers for initial and continued education, we will definitely find difficulties to promote the inclusion of all people, it doesn t matter whether they are disabled or not in the school premises.

To this end, a study was conducted of documentary and bibliographical. In desk research we prioritize both federal, and state and municipal, dealing specifically with ESA; since the national guidelines for Special Education in inclusive education perspective establishing a change in the schooling situation of the target group students in this type of education, and directs all educational systems to make available the services themselves of this service in the regular network. The bibliographic part supported the study on the understanding of the educational work to be done in ESA, with an emphasis on investigation of cognitive processes of students with disabilities. The mechanisms and strategies were selected and the resources to be used by means of educational practices and teacher training to work in this type of education. The research is oriented in the Historic-Cultural Psychology, this reference that in the case of Special Education, it is relevant in order to design for it defended disabled person as someone who should be seen and treated beyond its limitations; be attentive to the limitation that disability can not impose, but the possibilities that may arise. Thus, based on the study conducted, we can say that there are serious difficulties as regards the realization of the ESA, both the enrollment process, but also in the humanization of these subjects. Among many factors that have contributed to this situation, one of them lies related to the interests of capitalist society and, as the school has arranged to meet this system. As a result of investigation, whose epistemological assumptions of this work are conspicuous by humanization of all subjects, it is observed that the school routine, in the execution of educational practice have become even partially. The documentary aspect we noted that the legislation focuses the prerogative of what the practice in its entirety, when considering the context of the current system has not guaranteed. Thus, we conclude that the enforcement of the ESA should be given attention and prepositions in the performance of the special education teachers, both in terms of legislation and in their practice.
