What Affects Student Achievement

Wall, Gabrielle Julya Howard January 2010 (has links)
This study aimed to identify student-level variables that influence academic outcomes, and to determine the extent of their influence. In Study 1, final year secondary students (N = 654) completed a questionnaire gathering demographic information and measuring possible influencing variables. A number of these variables predicted academic achievement, including demographic, attitudinal, personality, study strategy and intelligence variables. Mathematical intelligence was the strongest predictor of achievement for all three achievement variables used, and was followed by school decile. Openness to experience and critical reasoning intelligence were the next strongest predictors of two achievement variables (proportion of Merit and Excellence credits attained and Level 3 attainment), while the third achievement variable (credits attained) was next best predicted by participant sex and verbal intelligence. Self-regulation skills were more beneficial when used by high intelligence participants. Likewise, critical thinking skills were more beneficial for high intelligence participants, high socio-economic participants and non-Māori participants. These interactions and the influence of participant openness to experience were further explored in a subsequent study, in which a second group of final year secondary students (N = 122) participated in a year-long study. Participants were divided into three groups: one group was taught critical thinking skills; a second group was taught strategies relating to the facets of openness to experience; and the third group was a control group. The control group was taught peer learning skills, which the previous study found did not relate to student achievement. The results of the interventions did not show a change in either the target variables or in student achievement for any of the three groups. Study 3 aimed to identify the student-level variables that influence academic outcomes for first year tertiary students and to determine the relative influence of each variable. This longitudinal study involved students at a New Zealand tertiary institution (N = 62) who had previously participated in Study 1 during their Year 13 year. Participants completed a questionnaire that collected demographic, attitudinal, personality and study strategy variables. Year 13 achievement and the use of critical thinking skills were the strongest predictors of student achievement.

This qualitative research aimed to obtain information about study strategies of undergraduate flute students and, at the end, to point to suggestions to improve the practice of the instrument. To begin with, we did an historical review of the study of the flute to situate the ways in which the teaching and learning of the instrument have developed. We have approached the features of the relationship between master-apprentice based on the treaty of Quantz, reaching a systematized study at the conservatory as a technical model . Second, we did a semi-structured interview with a group of six undergraduate flute students of a Brazilian university, searching for information about how they practice the instrument daily, and how they relate their practice with their own musical formation. After the interview, we created four categories approaching issues about the traditional models to learn that prioritize study of technical skills, and also about the organizing strategies applied in daily study to fully improve the performance, based on Laurence Bardin's analysis (2008). The results of analysis' contents of the collected reports shows that the technicist model of education is still adopted as the main choice among the investigated subjects. In the discussion, we point to ways of studying that contemplate a more reflexive thinking that can benefit planning strategies and adapt them to the needs of each individual thus optimizing the time and seeking an effective practice / Mestrado / Fundamentos Teoricos / Mestra em Música

Jaramillo García, Paola Andrea January 2015 (has links)
This research investigates violin practice strategies applicable to Heitor Villa-Lobos‟s Sonata-Fantasy No. 1, Désespérance, for Violin and Piano. Instrumentalists develop the abilities needed to execute various instrumental techniques, through specific practice methods. Thus, the focus of instrumental practice is the use of appropriate strategies to overcome technical difficulties within the studied repertoire. Departing from the extensive pedagogical works of violinists Robert Gerle and Simon Fischer, this article presents the violin practice strategies applied by the author to develop the technical abilities required to perform the Sonata-Fantasia, such as: arpeggios, scales in fast tempo, double-stops, chords of three and four notes and artificial harmonics.

. / Learning and study strategies adopted by university students are considered efficient in order to have a more meaningful learning. The diagnosis, measuring and study of these strategies are fundamental aspects for the improvement of the learning process. In this sense, valid, reliable and non-oblique instruments are necessary in the education area for accomplishing this measuring. In this study, it was carried out the adaptation and validation for the Brazilian population, of an instrument used for measuring learning and study strategies created in 1988, LASSI (Learning and Study Strategies Inventory), used worldwide but mainly in the United States where it was created. Eight hundred thirty-three university students from four public universities in the states of São Paulo and Paraná, took part in this research. The exploratory factorial analysis indicated a tenfactor structure in the instrument that, after dealt with and analyzed with the use of other statistical tests such as the internal consistency test (Cronbach's alpha), the Pearson's correlation coefficient and the temporal stability tests as well as conceptual analyses, became a nine-factor structure. The instrument originally had 77 questions to which 11 were added for this study, concerning study and learning strategies adopted in the Internet. In its final version, 71 questions were left in its general part and with the same 11 questions concerning the Internet, that is, in the validation task, six questions were eliminated, all of them from the general part. The original dimensions were reconfigured. Two of them were excluded: Self-Testing and Testing Strategies, and a new one was created: Concerns when studying. Significant correlations were found between the participant's performance in the subscales of the instrument and the variables gender and area of knowledge of their courses...

Schmitz, Aillyn da Rocha Unglaub 24 June 2010 (has links)

No. of bitstreams: 1 Aillyn.pdf: 17600701 bytes, checksum: 4df62950b6b54ed6c87a2a644a8dff94 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2010-06-24 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The present research, is a semi-experimental participant observation, presenting the processes of study in the Sonatas nº1 and nº4 I movement for Violin and Piano of Claudio Santoro, based on Performance Cues suggested on the research made by Dr. Roger Chaffin. It was necessary to identify and evaluate the strategies used in the violin and piano duo made by the author and violinist Izabela Köenig in the preparation of both Santoro´s Sonatas, from specific bibliography. Through the differences verified during the preparation process of an atonal piece (Sonata nº1) and of a tonal/modal piece of nationalistic tendency (Sonata nº4), it was perceived that the stylistic differences have influence on the performance cues, in quality and also in the nature of the performance cues. In chamber music, the shared performance cues proved necessary for performers that have the same musical objectives and that they may have support for occasional correction of failures during an interpretation of a piece / A presente pesquisa, que se configura como uma observação participante de cunho semi-experimental, teve por objetivo apresentar os processos de estudo nas Sonatas nº1 e nº4 I movimento para Violino e Piano de Cláudio Santoro, a partir dos guias de execução propostos nas pesquisas do Dr. Roger Chaffin.
