Linking Social Support and Sexual Interest among Older Adults in Intimate Romantic Relationships

Griffith, Jennifer Leigh 21 August 2008 (has links)
This study examines social support and sexual interest among coupled persons aged 57 to 85 in North America. Using quantitative data from the 2006 National, Social Life, Health, and Aging Project (n = 3,005), the dependent variable is sexual interest and the independent variable is social support received from an intimate partner. Using survey and quantitative interview data, I analyze social support older couples receive from their partner, sexual interest, health status, marital status, and gender. In my analysis, I predict that higher levels of social support will positively affect levels of sexual interest, with health, relationship status, and gender mediating the outcomes. This study has gerontological significance because sexuality can impact overall well-being among older adults, and my findings could further our understanding of sexuality among this population.

Socialinės paramos bendraamžių grupių atstumtiems paaugliams įvertinimas / Social support contemporaries groups offcast teenagers estimation

Jaškulis, Aurelijus 08 June 2005 (has links)
There are many influential social factors which influence teenagers personality formation, but today the most important personality socialization factors is a group of contemporaries. Repudiation is connected with undesirable behavior consequences. One of the most important personality socialization factors is a group of contemporaries. Repudiation is connected with undesirable behaviour consequences. Most often repudiation from contemporaries groups reveals in teens and becomes apparent in disability to accommodate with contemporaries behavior’ culture. The index of dependence difficulties in contemporaries groups are getting into conflicts, aggressive behavior, unnature behavior forms and low self esteem. The review of scientific literature and researches in Lithuania has showed that peculiarities of contemporary groups and repudiation factors has been rarely analysed in the sociological studies. The social workers lack experience and complex model to help teenagers in this problem. The aim of this work was set to reveal the specific features of contemporary groups, the factors of repudiation from these groups and foresees the intensity of social assistance.

Inre kontroll i yttre kaos : Självledarskap som stresshantering? / Inner control in external chaos : Self-leadership as a coping strategy?

Dahl, Ulrika January 2013 (has links)

The Wants and Needs of Older Cancer Survivors When Searching for Online Social Support

Fraser, Kathryn 04 August 2011 (has links)
In recent years, the Internet has emerged as a popular tool for providing social support to chronically-ill populations. However, research is limited in understanding the distinct needs of older cancer survivors who are less comfortable with Internet technology than younger generations. In this qualitative study, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 10 cancer survivors over age 50. Thematic analysis was used to help understand their wants and needs when using the Internet for social support. Four main themes were found: 1) the need to take charge of health outcomes, 2) the benefits of knowing they are not alone in their cancer journey, 3) how to maximize online resources for cancer support, and 4) how the spirit of survivorship is imperative for quality of life. These findings can be used to guide the delivery of online social support interventions, as well as facilitate easy access to such interventions by older cancer survivors.

Out of necessity and into the fields: migrant farmworkers in St. Rémi, Quebec

Valarezo, Giselle 08 April 2008 (has links)
The province of Ontario is the primary focus of a growing body of research discussing migrant agricultural labour in Canada. This thesis shifts the focus of inquiry to Quebec, a province that has not received the attention it warrants, given that it is “home” to the second largest temporary migrant population in Canada. Currently, Mexicans constitute the bulk of labourers contracted through the Seasonal Agricultural Worker Program (SAWP). With the establishment in 2003 of the Foreign Worker Program (FWP), however, the number of Guatemalans on the Quebec scene has increased significantly. The situation of workers from both countries is addressed in the form of a case study of St. Rémi. The thesis argues that the migrant experience in St. Rémi is characterized by a struggle to cope with: (1) an “unfree” labour status; (2) social and geographical isolation; and (3) lack of social assistance and community acknowledgement. An attempt is made to give migrant workers a voice, since their contribution for the most part is either unknown or unappreciated. The support system now in place in St. Rémi affords migrants some minimal rights, but much remains to be done, in Quebec and across Canada, to make the plight of workers better known and their situation improved. / Thesis (Master, Geography) -- Queen's University, 2007-09-27 22:28:11.532

Support Groups for Parents of Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders: Predictors and Effects of Involvement

Clifford, Tessen 20 June 2011 (has links)
Support groups are an effective source of support in a number of populations (e.g., Beaudoin & Tao, 2007; Preyde & Ardal, 2003; Singer, et al., 1999). Parents of children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are a particularly stressed group who can benefit from support (Blacher & McIntyre, 2006). These studies investigated: 1) predictors of participation in support groups for parents of children with ASD and 2) the effects of participation in an online support group for these parents. One hundred seventy-eight parents completed a series of online questionnaires measuring their beliefs about support groups and ASD, coping style, social support, mood, parenting stress, and their child’s autistic symptoms and daily functioning. Parents who were currently using parent support groups (PSGs) reported using more adaptive coping strategies than both parents who had never used PSGs and parents who had used PSGs in the past. Parents who had used PSGs in the past reported that they did not find the groups as beneficial as parents who were currently using them, and parents who had never participated in PSGs reported several issues with accessibility that made it difficult to participate in PSGs. A smaller group of parents (n = 36), who had participated in the first study, participated in an online support group designed for this study. An additional group of parents (n = 25), who had also completed the first study, served as a no-treatment control group. The parents in these two groups completed a subset of the questionnaires used in the first study following the 4-month support group, so that changes in mood, anxiety, parenting stress, and positive perceptions could be documented over time. No significant differences between the groups and across time were found. However, parents who participated in the group reported being satisfied with the support they received and finding the group helpful. Overall, the results of these studies suggest that interventions for parents of children with ASD need to be individualized and focused on the needs of the parents. Further research is required to investigate the efficacy of online support groups for parents of children with ASD. / Thesis (Ph.D, Psychology) -- Queen's University, 2011-06-20 10:55:21.845
