Análise da eficiência da várzea do ribeirão Parelheiros na melhoria de qualidade das águas que afluem à represa do Guarapiranga, São Paulo / Analysis of the performance of the wetlands of the Parelheiros creek in the improvement of the quality of the waters before they enter the Guarapiranga reservoir, São PauloAndrade, Almir Aparecido de Souza 12 September 2005 (has links)
The wetlands formed by Parelheiros creek were the focal point of this study. The creek is a water body that receives waters imported from Billings reservoir into Guarapiranga reservoir. The referred creek and associated wetlands also receive waters with diffuse source pollutants from inside and outside of the Guarapiranga watershed. This applied research work aimed at analyzing the performance of the referred wetlands in the improvement of the quality of the above-mentioned waters before they enter the Guarapiranga reservoir. Water quality data regarding several relevant parameters (monthly averages of total and fecal coliform counts, total cyanobacteria cell counts, exotoxin concentrations, total nitrogen and total phosphorus, apparent color, turbidity, chemical oxygen demand and pH) as well as flow data (minimum, average and maximum influent flows) were analyzed. The data were collected during a ten-month period comprised of four dry weather months followed by six wet weather months. It was not possible to analyze completely the effects of flow regime on the performance of the wetlands as a buffer zone for pollutant abatement because there was no available data on the diffuse source contributions, since they are not monitored. The wetlands showed removal efficiencies above 30% with respect to the improvement of some (not all) variables, as follows: turbidity, total cyanobacteria concentration and microcystia concentration. The pluviometry exerted significant influence on the wetland performance as a buffer zone for abatement of certain water constituents which represent pollution. However, removal efficiencies regarding wet and dry periods were very similar to each other

Abstract
The study of the flora and the vegetation of the swampy clearings on hydromorphic soils were realized in the National Park of Ivindo in north-eastern of Gabon. The phytosociological method of Braun-Blanquet was adopted for the realization of the relevés within the two principal vegetation type which form this biotope: the central meadow and the edge which girdles it. 133 relevés made it possible to count 229 species divided into 175 genera and 72 families. The matrices made starting from these relevés and of these species were analyzed by the method Ind Val; DCA made it possible to obtain groupings; CCA made it possible to evaluate the environmental link between parameter and the vegetation. An analysis of variance (ANOVA) follow-up of the tests post hoc of Bonferonni made it possible to see whether the values measured within the various groups are different.
The flora is dominated by Cyperaceae, Rubiaceae and Leguminosae-Caesalpinoideae. Five species, Fuirena stricta subsp stricta, Pycreus subtrigonus, Pycreus mundtii, Rhynchospora perrieri and Leptochloa coerulescens are announced for the first time to Gabon.
Eight associations are described: 5 for the meadows and 3 on the level of the edges. Four of the associations of the meadows (the pelophyte semi-aquatic association with Costus afer and Centotheca lappacea; the helophyte semi-aquatic association with Pycreus mundtii and Pycreus subtrigonus; the pelophyte semi-aquatic association with Virectaria multiflora and Kyllinga pumila; the nitrophyte association with Tristemma leiocalyx and Bacopa crenata) belong to the class of Phragmitetea while the last (the aquatic association with Schoenoplectus mucronatus and Nymphaea heudelotii) is belong to the class of Potametea .
Two of the associations of edges (the pelophyte pre-forester association with Ludwigia africana and Nephrolepis bisserata; the hygrophyte association of the marshy forests with Anthocleista schweinfurthii and Uapaca guineensis) belong to the class of Mitragynetea and the third (the nitrophyte marshy pre-forester association with Leptochloa coerulescens and Echinochloa indica) to Phragmitetea.
The hydro-morphology and the depth of the mud as well as the animal frequentation constitute the environmental variables which influence the occurrence of these associations within the meadows, whereas they do not have any effect on the association edge.
The species richness varies from 62 to 164 for the association edge while within the meadows it varies from 35 to 63. The average indices of diversity for the whole of the associations of the clearings are 4.4 ± 0.5 (Shannon), 0.07 ± 0.03 (Simpson) while Piélou’s evenness is 0.78 ± 0.05.
The flora is not uniquely linked with the clearings of Gabon, although, on the phytogeographical level, the guineo-congolian endemics are dominant on the level of the edges whereas in fact the species with broad distributions prevail in the meadows. The analysis of the biological types shows the preponderance of the geophytes and the therophytes for the meadows while the edges are largely dominated by phanérophytes. The zoochory and the anemochory constitute the modes of dissemination most met within the studied flora.

Geology and characterization of coal at the Mushithe Coal Occurrence, Soutpansberg Coalfield, Limpopo Province, South AfricaMukatuni, Sedzani 20 September 2019 (has links)
MESMEG / Department of Mining and Environmental Geology / The Mushithe coal occurrence is situated approximately 16 km west of the Tshikondeni coal mine in the Tshipise-Pafuri sub-basin of the Soutpansberg coalfield in South Africa. The Soutpansberg Coalfield has received comparatively less attention compared to other more notable South African coalfields. There is as a consequence very limited information in the public domain applicable to the geology as well as quality of coal in this coalfield, as a result there is no known study focused exclusively on the Mushithe coal occurrence.
The aim of the study was to conduct detailed geological mapping of the Mushithe Deposit so as to ascertain the geological environment and petrological characteristics of rocks within the area. Further work involved coal sampling and analysis in order to establish coal quality and its physical and chemical characteristics.
Samples were collected using geological field mapping and channel sampling. Nine coal samples were collected from the coalbed and host rock, exposed along the Mbodi River, during geological field mapping using channel sampling. Furthermore, 92 rock samples were collected during geological field mapping of which 10 representative samples were selected for further analysis. X-ray fluorescence spectrometry was conducted on all selected samples. Proximate analysis and ultimate analyses, and calorimetry tests were undertaken on coal samples. Three samples were selected based on calorific value for maceral identification, mineral analyses and vitrinite reflectance using petrographic study.
Detailed geological mapping of the area around the Mushithe coal occurrence showed the geological setting of coal in this area. The following lithologies were identified in the study area: sandstone, mudstone, ironstone, calcrete, shale, quartzite, quartz vein with a general strike direction to the north-east. The host rocks including coal were intruded by dolerite dykes and this resulted in the devolatilization of coal.
The current study concluded that the Mushithe coal was formed in a wet swampy environment. This has been confirmed based on tissue preservation index (1.69) and
gelification index (2.35). Coal rank ranged from bituminous Rank C- B according to United Nations Economic Commission for Europe Coal Classification (UNECE) and samples were characterised by high ash (27.90%), high moisture (10.47%) and low sulphur (0.24%). Furthermore, coal was graded below grade D based on classification for use by ESKOM which consider any calorific value below 24.5 MJ/kg to be in this category. The coal is vitrinite rich (77.75 vol%) and low in Inertinite (22.25 vol%) and devoid of Liptinite and pseudovitrinite, thus it is of good coking quality. Geochemical analysis revealed that the coal was enriched in TiO2 and Fe2O3 which was corroborated by the mineral matter which was mostly clay and pyrite. Comparatively, coal quality analysis revealed the calorific value of 14.26 MJ/kg and vitrinite reflectance between 0.94 %ROV to 1 %ROV which was less than that of the Tshikondeni Deposit but greater than that at Waterberg coalfield.
The study recommends further detailed exploration of coal in the area, applying such techniques such as geophysical exploration and borehole drilling leading to resource evaluation. Further studies are recommended to provide a better interpretation of the depositional environment of coal at Mushithe as well as the effect of devolatilaziton by a dolerite dyke. / NRF

Learning Land and Life: An Institutional Ethnography of Land Use Planning and Development in a Northern Ontario First NationGruner, Sheila 16 November 2012 (has links)
This study examines intricately related questions of consciousness and learning, textually-mediated social coordination, and human relationships within nature, anchored in the everyday life practices and concerns of a remote First Nation community in the Treaty 9 region. Through the use of Institutional Ethnography, community-based research and narrative methods, the research traces how the ruling relations of land use planning unfold within the contemporary period of neoliberal development in Northern Ontario. People’s everyday experiences and access to land in the Mushkego Inninowuk (Swampy Cree) community of Fort Albany for example, are shaped in ways that become oriented to provincial ruling relations, while people also reorient these relations on their own terms through the activities of a community research project and through historically advanced Indigenous ways of being. The study examines the coordinating effects of provincially-driven land use planning on communities and territories in Treaty 9, as people in local sites are coordinated to others elsewhere in a complex process that serves to produce the legislative process called Bill 191 or the Far North Act. Examining texts, ideology and dialectical historical materialist relations, the study is an involved inquiry into the text process itself and how it comes to be put together. The textually mediated and institutional forms of organizing social relations—effectively land relations—unfold with the involvement of people from specific sites and social locations whose work is coordinated, as it centres on environmental
protection and development in the region north of the 51st parallel. A critique of the textually mediated institutional process provides a rich site for exploring learning within the context of neoliberal capitalist relations and serves to illuminate ways in which people can better act to change the problematic relations that haunt settler-Indigenous history in the contemporary period. The work asks all people involved in the North how we can work to address historic injustices rooted in the relations and practices of accumulation and dispossession. The voices and modes of governance of Aboriginal people, obfuscated within the processes and relations of provincial planning, must be afforded the space and recognition to flourish on their own terms.
