The Urban Expansion of Syracuse in sixth and fifth centuries BC

Hora, Juliana Figueira da 07 February 2013 (has links)
This research has the objective to analyse the influence of the tyrannical governments of Syracuse in the urbanistic restructuration of this city, founded by Greeks in the middle of VII century B.C. They are: Diodoro Sículo, first reference for Siracuse, Heródoto, Tucídides, Estrabão, Cícero, Políbio, Píndaro and Pausânias. We\'ve been working with the archeological data at the very important areas in the \"polis\" (ásty and khora), and the sub-colonies, with the objective of understanding the urban space, its dynamism of expansion since the foundation until the V century B.C. and its monumentality. The confrontation between the written and the material source, methodology of work, will be the base for better understanding the political, social, economic and spacial relations. The compulsory populational reallocations made by the tyrants are analysed in the context of the changes observed at the syracusean \"polis\".

: le cas de Syracuse (1945-1976) / The conflict between development and safeguarding of the cultural heritage in Italy during the Glorious Thirties. : the case of Syracuse (1945-1976)

Nucifora, Melania 12 July 2017 (has links)
The starting point of this work is a critique of the dominant historiographical discourse about the conflict between development and conservation of cultural heritage and landscape, based on the interpretative category of speculation and postulating the homogeneity of the process of transformation of the Italian cities during the «Golden Age».Such reading descends – on a historiographical level – from the militant discourse of the time, based on the categories of «interests», «corruption», «blocco edilizio», i. e. a social block represented by landowners, estate agents and the dominating political class. According to this narrative, the whole period is to be interpreted as the failure of the public and the complete responsibility for this is to be attributed to the will of both national and local politicians. Such perspective does not operate any distinction between the so-called period of «centrism», characterised by the solitary position of power of the Catholic party (The Christian Democracy), and the period known as the «Centre-left rule», characterised by the alliance of the Catholic party and the Socialist one converging on a «reformist» project, which postulated the urban planning reform as one of its fundamental points. The historical representation of the case of Syracuse moves from the deconstruction of the dominant discourse traced back to the elitist vision of a minority of intellectuals; a vision recalled and adopted by the radical left in order to provide a representation of this process meant to demolish the reformist experience. Our aim, on the contrary, is to point out the importance of the technical and disciplinary knowledge as well as of the articulation of the bureaucratic apparatus inherited from the inter-war years and of the addresses of national jurisprudence. In this perspective, the experience of the center-left urban government represents a real turning point, creating the premises for a better preservation of the urban cultural heritage.

Sing for Your Costumes: A Costume Design Thesis on The Boys from Syracuse

Baker, Terry 01 May 2018 (has links)
This thesis document is a presentation and exploration of the process involving the costume design for The Boys from Syracuse (music by Richard Rodgers, lyrics by Lorenz Hart, book by George Abbott) in the McLeod Theatre at Southern Illinois University Carbondale during February 2018. This light-hearted, farcical musical reminds us that life doesn’t have to be so serious. It explores our ability to be consumed by our own responsibilities, which causes us to escape to the theater and just enjoy a show. Chapter 1 contains the research, background information, and script analysis that was conducted to further enhance and inform the design of the costumes. This chapter also contains the goals that I wanted to achieve within my design and personal growth. Chapter 2 focuses on the design process and how each costume evolved through collaboration and discussion. Chapter 3 documents the build process of the design and how it was realized. An examination of the dress rehearsals and the production’s four performances are also contained within this chapter. Chapter 4 documents an analysis of the entire design and its evolution through outside critiques and commentary supported by personal self-reflection.

: étude comparée des cas de Syracuse University et de l'université Paris Nanterre / Universities and academics in their territories : what engagements for which missions? : comparative approach of two case study Syracuse University and Paris Nanterre University

Vergnaud, Camille 30 November 2018 (has links)
This thesis deals with the place of the territory in university missions using two case studies: Syracuse University (New York State, United States) and Paris Nanterre (France). Based on the concept of university engagement, the analysis questions the positions and actions voluntarily undertaken by universities or academics to contribute to society issues. The comparative approach looks at two universities that are using their commitment as an argument to be more attractive according to their respective national models. The leaders of the two universities promote a renewed theorization of the university's missions and its territorial functions. The analysis of the implementation of this posture of engagement highlights the different means of action of the two institutions, while distinguishing similar territorial logics: the territory of the university is at the same time a frame of action, a land of investment, and an asset to be changed and defined the way the universities want it to be. The faculty level is also studied in its relations with the institution, highlighting at the same time various types of incentives addressed by the universities to their members to integrate them in their projects, and the faculty strategies towards their institution.

Understanding The Evolution of The American Film Education System And Curriculum

Jeng,Ming-Huey Unknown Date (has links)
University of Southern California, New York University, University of California-Los Angeles, and Syracuse University / American film education system is changing, particularly in light of the digital technology boom. Just how American film education has evolved with regards to the market, social, and technical influences is the objective of this research. Four schools--University of Southern California, New York University, University of California-Los Angeles, Syracuse University--and their undergraduate and graduate curricula from 1960s to present are examined. Qualitative explanations are supported by interviews with administrators and instructors. The study finds that technological developments play an important role in the evolution of American film education by engendering the creation of new courses, programs, departments, and degrees. Yet, the fundamentals of filmmaking have not changed, and schools’ origin and philosophy remain influential factors in shaping the film curriculum.
