Med hög sannolikhet tittar du just nu på en yta av glas. Bakom skärmen ligger ett rutnät beståendes av tusentals pixlar som formar det du ser. Den digitala revolutionen har underlättat våra liv på det mest fantastiska sätt. Men i sociala rum kring ett matbord har det blivit en kamp om uppmärksamheten mellan två olika världar, en virtuell och en verklig. Mitt arbete handlar om den visuella konsumtionen på Instagram. Hur vi ständigt vill se mer, hur vi vänjer oss vid belöning och bekräftelse. Vi smygtittar in i folks liv och är nästan alltid uppkopplade. Ett nytt beteende har snabbt utvecklats där vi väljer att kolla på telefonen i stället för att samtala och se varandra IRL. Likt en Wunderkammer har jag samlat objekt från världens alla hörn i ett rum. Av nyfikenhet att försöka förstå den digitala frestelsen. Att samla fragment på en och samma plats för att skapa en helhet. Symboler, sida vid sida. Hierarkier. Ett kontrollerat kaos. Delar av glas. Bit efter bit, pixel efter pixel. I min gestaltning har jag materialiserat det digitala genom tusentals bitar av glas – och fogar som skapar friktion för ett febrilt scrollande finger. / It’s a big chance that you’re currently looking at a surface of glass. Behind the screen is a grid consisting thousands of pixels that shape what you see. The digital revolution has made our lives easier in the most amazing way. But in social settings around a dining table, there has been a struggle for attention between two different worlds, a virtual and a real. My project is about the visual consumption on Instagram. How we constantly want to see more, how we get used to rewards and confirmation. We peek into people's lives and are almost always connected. A new behavior has developed rapidly where we choose to look at the phone instead of talking and seeing each other IRL. Just like a Wunderkammer, I have collected objects from all over the world in one room, out of curiosity to try to understand the digital hunger. To collect fragments in one place to see the whole picture. Symbols, side by side. Hierarchy. A controlled chaos. Parts of glass. Bit by bit, pixel by pixel. In my artwork, I have materialized the digital world with thousands of pieces of glass — and grouts that create friction for a scrolling finger.

Structural controls on groundwater flow in the Clanwilliam area

>Magister Scientiae - MSc / Deformation of the western part of the Table Mountain Group rocks during the Cape Orogeny created a series of folds and associated fractures. The subsequent continental break-up of Gondwana led to the development of large fault systems. These exert a major influence on deep and shallow groundwater flow. There are 3 main types of structures that are investigated. The geological contacts between hydraulically different lithologies, the primary characteristics of the sediments comprising the main geological units and the secondary structures developed from the tectonic events. These inter-alia include lithological boundaries, bedding and conjugate joints and large faults. Compartmentalisation of the aquifers by lithological and fault boundaries are the main regional level controls on flow in the study area. Joints are important for local control of flow, but cumulatively exert a regional effect as well. These controls exert a strong 3 dimensional impact on flow patterns within the area. Geological cross sections and detailed fieldwork combined with the conceptual models proposed are used to determine groundwater flow and the extent of the flow constraints. There is heterogeneity in the fault characteristics whilst there is consistence in the impermeable aquitards. These effect boundaries at the base of the aquifer, divide the aquifer into upper and lower units and cap the top of the aquifer. Using water level data, EC and pH an attempt is made to establish patterns created by structures, mainly faults. There appears to be some control of these shown by patterns seen on contour plots of the data. Understanding of the structures can significantly alter the way the available data could be interpreted. The integration of all available data into the conceptual model provides an effective research tool, which opens up further avenues for new approaches and methods for continued research in this area.

Contrast agent imaging using an optimized table-top x-ray fluorescence and photon-counting computed tomography imaging system

Contrast agents are often crucial in medical imaging for disease diagnosis. Novel contrast agents, such as gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and lanthanides, are being ex- plored for a variety of clinical applications. Preclinical testing of these contrast agents is necessary before being approved for use in humans, which requires the use of small animal imaging techniques. Small animal imaging demands the detection of these contrast agents in trace amounts at acceptable imaging time and radiation dose. Two such imaging techniques include x-ray fluorescence computed tomography (XFCT) and photon-counting CT (PCCT). XFCT combines the principles of CT with x-ray fluorescence by detecting fluorescent x-rays from contrast agents at various projections to reconstruct contrast agent maps. XFCT can image trace amounts of AuNPs but is limited to small animal imaging due to fluorescent x-ray attenuation and scatter. PCCT uses photon-counting detectors that separate the CT data into energy bins. This enables contrast agent detection by recognizing the energy dependence of x-ray attenuation in different materials, independent of AuNP depth, and can provide anatomical information that XFCT cannot. To achieve the best of both worlds, we modeled and built a table-top x-ray imaging system capable of simultaneous XFCT and PCCT imaging. We used Monte Carlo simulation software for the following work in XFCT imaging of AuNPs. We simulated XFCT induced by x-ray, electron, and proton beams scanning a small animal-sized object (phantom) containing AuNPs with Monte Carlo techniques. XFCT induced by x-rays resulted in the best image quality of AuNPs, however high-energy electron and medium-energy proton XFCT may be feasible for on-board x-ray fluorescence techniques during radiation therapy. We then simulated a scan of a phantom containing AuNPs on a table-top system to optimize the detector arrangement, size, and data acquisition strategy based on the resulting XFCT image quality and available detector equipment. To enable faster XFCT data acquisition, we separately simulated another AuNP phantom and determined the best collimator geometry for Au fluorescent x-ray detection. We also performed experiments on our table-top x-ray imaging system in the lab. Phantoms containing multiples of three lanthanide contrast agents were scanned on our tabletop x-ray imaging system using a photon-counting detector capable of sustaining high x-ray fluxes that enabled PCCT. We used a novel subtraction algorithm for reconstructing separate contrast agent maps; all lanthanides were distinct at low concentrations including gadolinium and holmium that are close in atomic number. Finally, we performed the first simultaneous XFCT and PCCT scan of a phantom and mice containing both gadolinium and gold based on the optimized parameters from our simulations. This dissertation outlines the development of our tabletop x-ray imaging system and the optimization of the complex parameters necessary to obtain XFCT and PCCT images of multiple contrast agents at biologically-relevant concentrations. / Graduate

A lamp that grows with you

The main focus of this work is the relationship between person and object. My initial hypothesis was that people are “creators of meaning”. It is one of our basic cognitive functions. We all need an understandable motivation to comprehend, consider and experience the everyday-life environment around us. We have all experienced a special connection with items that we own. This is also true for the subject of my analysis: luminaries. Light is the main protagonist of our life. Besides the obvious role in making us see the world around us, it has a major impact on modifying our feelings. Following deep literature research, I proposed to a selected group of volunteers a questionnaire to answer a concise but complex question: why we consider a special object that we care about. Despite this topic has been broadly analyzed in the field, it is my opinion that there is a lack of understanding about the influence that objects have on attachment bonds.  The purpose of my analysis was to understand what would make a person holding on to a lamp for all of his/her life and maybe giving it as an heirloom further on in the family. A variety of aspects related to the concept of bonding to a specific object have been identified: time, value to the person, love and care, irreplaceability, person-object interactions, an extension of self-identity, and emotions. In general, as a conclusion from my survey, I have identified three main aspects important for the person-luminaire bond:- the features of the person itself - the characteristic of a lamp in its duality - the relation bond between the two In general, people are focusing more broadly on the effect and the atmosphere created by the luminaire in the house and I can conclude that the connection is created through an important association between the psychological momentum and the home environment where they are immersed into. I finally proposed a guideline applicable to future design projects and to define the most important characteristics that an object should have to bond with a person for life.In future perspectives, an obvious implication would be to rethink our approach to design and drive professionals towards customer-oriented needs and expectations to extend the life cycle of products.

Network Design and Analysis Problems in Telecommunication, Location-Allocation, and Intelligent Transportation Systems

This research is concerned with the development of algorithmic approaches for solving problems that arise in the design and analysis of telecommunication networks, location-allocation distribution contexts, and intelligent transportation networks. Specifically, the corresponding problems addressed in these areas are a local access and transport area (LATA) network design problem, the discrete equal-capacity p-median problem (PMED), and the estimation of dynamic origin-destination path ows or trip tables in a general network. For the LATA network problem, we develop a model and apply the Reformulation-Linearization Technique (RLT) to construct various enhanced tightened versions of the proposed model. We also design efficient Lagrangian dual schemes for solving the linear programming relaxation of the various enhanced models, and construct an effective heuristic procedure for deriving good quality solutions in this process. Extensive computational results are provided to demonstrate the progressive tightness resulting from the enhanced formulations and their effect on providing good quality feasible solutions. The results indicate that the proposed procedures typically yield solutions having an optimality gap of less than 2% with respect to the derived lower bound, within a reasonable effort that involves the solution of a single linear program. For the discrete equal-capacity p-median problem, we develop various valid inequalities, a separation routine for generating cutting planes via specific members of such inequalities, as well as an enhanced reformulation that constructs a partial convex hull representation that subsumes an entire class of valid inequalities via its linear programming relaxation. We also propose suitable heuristic schemes for solving this problem, based on sequentially rounding the continuous relaxation solutions obtained for the various equivalent formulations of the problem. Extensive computational results are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed valid inequalities, enhanced formulations, and heuristic schemes. The results indicate that the proposed schemes for tightening the underlying relaxations play a significant role in enhancing the performance of both exact and heuristic solution methods for solving this class of problems. For the estimation of dynamic path ows in a general network, we propose a parametric optimization approach to estimate time-dependent path ows, or origin-destination trip tables, using available data on link traffic volumes for a general road network. Our model assumes knowledge of certain time-dependent link ow contribution factors that are a dynamic generalization of the path-link incidence matrix for the static case. We propose a column generation approach that uses a sequence of dynamic shortest path subproblems in order to solve this problem. Computational results are presented on several variants of two sample test networks from the literature. These results indicate the viability of the proposed approach for use in an on-line mode in practice. Finally, we present a summary of our developments and results, and offer several related recommendations for future research. / Ph. D.

Point estimation of several association parameters in categorical data are presented. Typically, a constant is added to the frequency counts before the association measure is computed. We will study the accuracy of these adjusted point estimators based on frequentist and Bayesian methods respectively. In particular, amended estimators for the ratio of independent Poisson rates, relative risk, odds ratio, and the ratio of marginal binomial proportions will be examined in terms of bias and mean squared error.

A physical accounting model for monitoring material flows in urban areas with application to the Stockholm Royal Seaport district / En fysisk räkenskapsmodell för övervakning av materialflöden i urbana områden med applikation i Norra Djurgårdsstaden

There is a plethora of methods and tools that can be used for the assessment of Urban Metabolism. Nevertheless, there is no standardized method for accounting of material flows within and across the boundaries of urban systems. This thesis aims to provide a physical accounting model for monitoring material flows in urban areas that could potentially become the basis for the development of a standardized accounting method in the long term. The model is based on a Physical Input Output Table framework and builds upon the strengths of existing accounting methods but at the same time it demonstrates new features that can address their limitations. The functions of the model were explored and evaluated through its application to an urban neighbourhood in the Stockholm Royal Seaport. Bottom-up data were used for the application of the model in the case study. The application of the model provided a preliminary description of the material flows in the neighbourhood and most importantly provided information that underpinned the assessment of the strengths and limitations of the model. It was deduced, that on the one hand the model can describe successfully the physical interactions between the urban socioeconomic system and the environment or other socioeconomic systems and at the same it has the potentials to illustrate the intersectoral flows within the boundaries of the system. In addition, it can be used to structure available data on material flows and promote the study of an urban system with a life cycle perspective. On the other hand, the process of compiling the tables of the model can be considered as complex and moreover the data requirements for the compilation of the tables are significant. Especially, the compilation of the tables of the model with bottom-up data may require a laborious data collection and analysis process, which however may not address all data gaps. Thus, the combination of bottom-up data with top-down data is recommended. Moreover, it is recommended the development of integrated databases for data collection and management at the municipal level and the fostering of collaboration between stakeholders within the municipalities to facilitate dissemination of data and information. / Mer än hälften av den globala befolkningen bor numera i urbana områden och denna andel uppskattas öka under de kommande årtiondena. Urbana system förbrukar fysiska resurser och genererar stora mängder av rester vilket innebär påfrestningar på miljön samt hindrar en hållbar utveckling. Således kan förståelse av Urban Metabolism (UM) stödja insatserna för att effektivisera resursförbrukningen och avfallshanteringen. I detta sammanhang har en stor mängd av metoder och verktyg utvecklats och tillämpats i UM-studier, såsom Materialflödeanalys (Material Flow Analysis - MFA) och Input-output Analys (Input Output - IOA) baserat på fysiska input-output tabeller (Input Output Tables – PIOTs). Ändå saknas en standardiserad metod för redovisning av materialflöden inom och över gränserna av urbana system. I samband med detta examensarbete utvecklades en fysisk räkenskapsmodell för övervakning av materialflöden i urbana områden. Denna modell kan potentiellt bli grunden för en enhetlig metod för beräkning av materialflöden i urbana system. Modellen utvecklades i en stegvis process och baserades på litteraturgranskning. Grunden för modellen är ett omfattande PIOT ramverk som kan användas för registrering av materialflöden i urbana system. PIOT ramverket är annorlunda än de typiska PIOT-systemen. Det ger en tydligare avgränsning av systemgränserna, det visar tydligt ursprung och destination för materialflöden, och dessutom kan det erbjuda ett livscykelperspektiv på materialflödena. Modellen består av en uppsättning identiska PIOT. Varje deltabell innehåller materialflöden som tillhör i en specifik klass, medan huvudtabellen aggregerar materialet som strömmar för alla material från deltabellerna. Därigenom kan modellen avbilda materialflödena i ett aggregat-perspektiv och samtidigt ge fysiska räkenskaper för specifika materialtyper. Modellen användes i en nybyggd stadsdel i Norra Djurgårdsstaden (NDS), för att utforska och bedöma dess funktioner. För att kartlägga och kvantifiera flödena i stadsdelen genomfördes en MFA baserad på “bottom-up-data”. Insamlingen och analysen av data var emellertid en besvärlig process och dessutom kunde flera materialflöden inte kvantifieras på grund av databrister. Därför kunde modellens tabeller inte fyllas fullständigt och ett flödesdiagram skapades med både kvantitativa och kvalitativa flöden. Trots att det fanns databrister lyckades tillämpningen av modellen att avbilda UM i det avgränsade urbana systemet på ett adekvat sätt. Det visade tydligt att nästan 96% av de materiella insatserna är ackumulerade i lager. Dessutom fastställde modellen kvalitativt den fysiska växelverkan mellan det urbana systemet och den naturliga miljön, det nationella socioekonomiska och det globala socioekonomiska systemet. Emellertid var det inte möjligt att bedöma modellens fullständiga potential eftersom det inte var möjligt att upprätta intersektorala kopplingar. Dessutom beräknades indirekta flöden av flera importerade material baserat på koefficienterna för materialintensitet. Detta tillvägagångssätt kan erbjuda insikt om de uppströms påfrestningar som orsakas av materialproduktionen. Dock finns det endast koefficienter för specifika material. Därför kan de inte användas för att uppskatta de indirekta flödena för varje materialinflöde. Dock framhöll deras partiella tillämpning att indirekta flödena var 38% högre än direktflödena, vilket indikerar att påfrestningar som utövas till miljön på grund av produktion av importerade material är betydande. Tillämpningen av modellen möjliggjorde en bedömning av både styrkor och svagheter hos modellen. Å ena sidan kan modellen fastställa fysiska interaktioner mellan det urbana socioekonomiska systemet och naturmiljön, det nationella socioekonomiska systemet och det globala socioekonomiska systemet. Dessutom har det potential att beskriva intersektorala flöden inom gränserna för det urbana systemet och det kan erbjuda insikt om materialinflödenas ursprung och materialutflödenas destination. En annan styrka i modellen är att den erbjuder livscykelperspektiv genom att ta hänsyn till indirekta flöden av importerade material. Å andra sidan demonstrerades att sammanställningenav modellens tabeller kräver en stor mängd data, speciellt när data erhålls med ett ”bottom-up” tillvägagångssätt. Ändå är bottom-up data inte alltid tillgängliga för urbana områden. En annan svaghet är att sammanställningenav tabellerna i modellen med bottom-up-data kräver en mödosam process för datainsamling och analys. Dessutom kräver analysen av data många antaganden som ökar osäkerheten i resultaten. Ovanstående svagheter i modellen kan hindra tillämpningen av modellen för räkenskap av materialflöden på urbana områden. Således rekommenderas kombinationen av bottom-up-data med top-down data för tillämpning av modellen. Dessutom föreslås utvecklingen av integrerade databaser för datainsamling om materialflöden i urbana områden.

Full-Scale Shake Table Cyclic Simple Shear Testing of Liquefiable Soil

This research consists of full-scale shake table tests to investigate liquefaction of sandy soils. Consideration of the potential and consequences of liquefaction is critical to the performance of any structure built in locations of high seismicity underlain by saturated granular materials as it is the leading cause of damage associated with ground failure. In certain cases the financial losses associated with liquefaction can significantly impact the financial future of an entire region. Most liquefaction triggering studies are performed in the field where liquefaction has been previously observed, or in tabletop laboratory testing. The study detailed herein is a controlled laboratory test performed at full scale to allow for the measurement of field-scale index testing before and after cyclic loading. Testing was performed at the Parson’s geotechnical and Earthquake Laboratory at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo on the 1-dimensional shake table with a mounted flexible walled testing apparatus. The testing apparatus, originally constructed for soil-structure interaction experiments utilizing soft clay was retrofitted for the purpose of studying liquefaction. This research works towards comparing large-scale simple-shear liquefaction testing to small-scale simple-shear liquefaction testing of a #2/16 Monterey sand specimen. The bucket top was modified in order to apply a vertical load to the soil skeleton to replicate overburden soil conditions. Access ports were fitted into the bucket top for instrument cable access and to allow cone penetration testing before and after cyclic loading. A shear-wave generator was created to propagate shear waves into the sample for embedded accelerometers to measure small strain stiffness of the sample. Pore-pressure transducers were embedded in the soil sample to capture excess pore water pressure produced during liquefaction. Displacement transducers were attached to the bucket in order to measure shear strains during cyclic testing and to measure post-liquefaction volumetric deformations. The results of this investigation provide an empirical basis to the behavior of excess pore water production, void re-distribution, shear wave velocity, shear strain and cone penetrometer tip resistance of #2/16 Monterey sand before, during, and after liquefaction in a controlled laboratory environment at full-scale.
