The effect of media on the listening comprehension scores of intermediate ESL students

Tyson, Marian 01 January 1989 (has links)
The use of videotapes has become widespread in ESL classes in recent years. The decline in cost of tapes and VCR equipment has assisted in the spread of this technology. These tapes are often used in listening comprehension classes and may replace or supplement the use of audiotapes. However, research has not established that the addition of the visual element, especially in the movie or TV type context of many videos, is an advantage to the language learner. A total of seventy-six students participated in a listening comprehension recall exercise. Thirty-nine students viewed a videotape segment, and the remaining thirty-seven students listened to the audio portion of the same segment. Each group viewed or listened to the tape two times. Then the groups were given twenty minutes to write a recall. Each paper was scored for total idea units recalled, macropropositions, elaborations, and distortions .

A Model for Developing Law Lecture Comprehension Lessons for Non-Native Speakers of English from Video-taped Authentic Materials

Martin, Lynne Rohmerien 26 June 2007 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / The goal of this thesis was to create a model of how video-taped law lectures (authentic materials) can be used in designing individual lessons which will, in general, incorporate current EAP practices and standards in aiding the LL.M. students to improve their lecture listening comprehension skills. More specifically, my model will show how within each lesson the video-taped law lectures can be used to target either a particular linguistic form or lecture construct feature for which studies have shown to be problematic in L2 lecture comprehension. Moreover, this model will further demonstrate how these lessons should address lecture organization specific to the study of law, as well as show how general lecture listening strategies can be presented as an integral part of every lesson.

The effectiveness of videotape recorded feedback on the facilitation of behavior change in three institutionalized adults

Boggs, Stephen R. 01 January 1977 (has links) (PDF)
The effectiveness of videotape recorded feedback on reducing the rate of inappropriate, bizarre mannerisms n hospitalized individuals was examined using a multiple baseline design across three subjects. Results indicate that the technique was effective in reducing the rate of these behaviors in the treatment setting. Data on generalization of treatment effects were inconclusive. Theoretical explanations for the procedure's effectiveness are discussed.

Teaching Communication Skills through Video Tape Productions

Fleetwood, Jane R 01 January 1988 (has links)
Motivating students to learn and practice effective communication skills has always been a dilemma for teachers of all grade levels. Video cameras and camcorders are now being used as teaching tools in many schools to not only motivate students to use and practice a variety of skills, but to stimulate their creativity, as well. Loretto Elementary School in Jacksonville, Florida, is developing a program which incorporates student-written video productions into its existing curriculum. Loretta's innovative program is a direct result of a 10-rninute informational video tape production done by graduate student Jane Fleetwood and Continental Cablevision, a local cable television company. This paper describes the step-by-step procedures involved in that production, the business education partnership which exists between the school and the cable company, and the school's plans for making video productions as integral part of its curriculum.

The Effects of a Short-Term Videotape Training Program for Guides Conducting Older Adults on Tours in Public Spaces

Wolens, Sylvia E. (Sylvia Elaine) 08 1900 (has links)
The problem of this study was a test of a specific videotape designed to influence the actions of tour guides for older adult groups. The purposes of the study were to observe guide performances and older adult responses before and after training in techniques for sharing information with older adults in public spaces. The hypotheses were tested. 1) Guides after training would exhibit significant differences in behaviors of pointing, repeating, pausing, questioning, conversing, facing art when talking, talking inaudibly, pacing rapidly. 2) Older adult drop-outs would decrease on tours with especially trained guides.

Public Safety, D/FW Style: Production of an Informational Videotape

Holland, Marvin Glyn 08 1900 (has links)
This study consists of two parts, the completed videotape production and the production book. The videotape explores the history, organizational structure, and training requirements of the Dallas/Fort Worth Airport Department of Public Safety. A copy of the videotape is shelved in the North Texas State University Media Center Library. The production book describes background preproduction, production, and postproduction of the videotape. Problems, their effects, and solutions are described. The study concludes that an effective videotape can be produced in-house with limited time, equipment, and personnel, at a cost far less than commercially produced films. The study makes specific recommendations for guidelines and planning of future productions.

The reduce the cost associated with the operation of electric power distribution systems has become increasingly imperative in the setting of the energy sector. One of the main alternatives to solve this problem is to minimize power losses in distribution feeders. In order to reduce losses, some practices have been adopted, such as the allocation of capacitors at strategic points in the system as well as LTC adjustment and reconfiguration of distribution networks. The solution of such problems involves complex algorithms for nonlinear mixed integer optimization. Therefore, this paper presents a specialized technique based on meta-heuristic ant colony optimization to solve the problem of minimizing losses in electric power distribution systems through the optimal capacitor placement combined with the LTC adjustment, and consider constraints voltage violation. This algorithm proposes changes to the basic structure of the problem in order to obtain better results. The proposed methodology is applied to systems found in the literature and results are compared with other methods.
