The impact of pre-service primary English language teacher training on post-training practice

This study sought to investigate the impact of pre-service primary school English language teachers’ training on their post-training practice. A constructive research paradigm and qualitative method were used in the study. The participants were selected purposively, and final year pre-service primary school English trainee teachers were used to collect the research data. The data were collected in the year 2016. To collect the data, an interview schedule, an observation guide and document analyses were used. The interviews and the observations were recorded and later transcribed. The transcribed data were coded, categorized according to their similarity, and then these categories were further collapsed into themes. The findings showed that the primary school ELT trainee teachers did not have sufficient understanding of the ELT methods offered during their training which led to poor practice, as revealed in their independent teaching. Some of the reasons for the trainees’ poor understanding and practice mentioned were that the training system was not supported by the reflective teaching method, and the support of ICT. In addition, there was a significant waste of time budgeted for the course time for the completion of the training program. In relation to time, the practicum time the students stayed in the primary school during independent teaching was not sufficient to give them hands-on practice. Moreover, they did not get the required support from the school mentors and the training college supervisors. Due to these constraints, almost all the participant trainee teachers demonstrated poor performances during the lesson delivery, which indicated that they did not understand the principles of the ELT methods / English Studies / D. The contribution of simulations to the practical work of foundation physics students at the University of Limpopo

Practical work is regarded as an essential part of learning; hence most tertiary institutions have included a practical component in their physics courses. There is a concern about the effectiveness of the practical work in most universities. The present study is a case study that assessed the contributions of simulations on Foundation Physics students’ practical work. In assessing the contribution of simulations, two tests, Determining and Interpreting Resistive Electric Circuits Concepts Test (DIRECT) and the Test of Integrated Science Process Skills (TISP) were used. A class test, observations and worksheets from students’ practical work were analyzed and interviews with a selected group were conducted. There were 20 Foundation Physics students participating from the University of Limpopo. Results indicated that the simulations contributed positively on students’ understanding of electric circuits. However the study revealed that the students who did simulations do not differ from those who did not do the simulations with regards to the development of process skills. / Institute of Science and Technology Education / M.Sc. Dois aspectos são abordados dentre aqueles considerados como problema na atual estrutura dos cursos oferecidos pelas Instituições de Ensino Superior IES. O primeiro procura focalizar os conceitos relativos às questões pedagógicas, particularmente sobre a metodologia de ensino a ser adotada. Pretende-se mostrar a necessidade de um rompimento com a forma tradicional de se ministrar aulas, que é centrada no professor. Considerando todas as mudanças pela qual o mundo está passando e que determina uma mudança radical no perfil do formando na era da informação. O segundo aspecto é o de identificar o estado em que se encontram as IES no que diz respeito a apropriação da informática pelo ensino, a começar pela identificação da existência dos equipamentos à disposição de professores e alunos. / This work contributes to the study looking for quality improvements in Accountancy Course. In the actual structure of the courses offered in High School Institutes, two problematic aspects are aborded. The first point shows to Accountancy Teachers conceptions on pedagogic questions, particularly on Teaching Methodology to be followed. It is demanded a rupture with the traditional way of ministering classes, which is centralized in the teacher. Le style cognitif est un domaine bien étudié et approfondi dans les pays occidentaux, surtout aux États-Unis, mais il reste peu développé par les chercheurs chinois. Cette notion est à propos de la personnalité, de la façon de traiter des informations reçus chez les différents individus, et elle peut aussi porter une influence sur l’éducation, qui contient l’éducation de mathématiques. En Chine, les mathématiques sont une matière principale et importante dans le système éducatif, et sous un contexte particulier de la société chinoise, un système éducatif chinois s’est formé. La phase secondaire est la phase la plus représentative dans le système éducatif chinois, et sous le contexte particulier, il faut considérer les styles cognitifs les plus fréquents chez les élèves et aussi le style cognitif de chaque élève pour trouver des méthodes d’améliorer l’éducation mathématique aux écoles secondaires. Pour ce but, il faut bien prendre en considération le côté d’apprentissage et le côté de didactique. Ainsi, notre travail va commencer par une étude des recherches et des théories matures de style cognitif qui serviront de base théorique, et ensuite avec la présentation du contexte de l’éducation mathématique en Chine nous allons pouvoir mieux le lier avec le style cognitif. Avec les résultats de notre recherche nous analysons et proposons des manières possibles au niveau de politique, de didactique et d’apprentissage pour améliorer l’éducation mathématique aux écoles secondaires en profitant des théories de style cognitif et des résultats de notre recherche. / The cognitive style is a well-developed and studied domain in western countries, especially in USA, but it is still a new ground for Chinese researchers. This conception is about the personality, the way to treat the received information for individuals, and it can also influence the education, which includes of course the mathematic education. In China, the mathematic is a principle subject at school in the Chinese educational system. With a special background in the society of China, a special educational system has been formed. The secondary education is the most typical in this educational system, and we need to think about the most frequent cognitive styles among Chinese students and also the cognitive style of each student to find the best methods to make the mathematic education better and more appropriate. For this destination, we need to consider the side of learning and the side of teaching. Therefore, our work will start by a presentation of the researches of cognitive styles and those mature theories, which can be our theoretical base, and then we will connect the education of mathematic with cognitive styles by a presentation of the situation of mathematics education in China. With the results of our research, we will analysis and make some advises about the politics of education, of the teaching and learning methods to try to ameliorate the mathematic education in China with help of cognitive styles and this research.

Problematika vyjmenovaných slov ve výuce českého jazyka / Problems of Listed Words in Czech Language Teaching

The diploma thesis is focused on problems of listed words in czech language teaching. The main aim of the thesis was to found the most effective method of listed words teaching in a third year of primary school. Theoretical part describes the position of listed words in Czech language and it search a pitfalls during the listed words teaching. The component of a teoretical part is also an analysis of Czech language textbooks for the third year of primary school. In the end of a theoretical part I was founding the other methods of listed words teaching which can be used in teaching. In practical part i was creating a materials for listed words teaching by selected teaching method (the method of word formation groups) and than i was verifying this method in a practical using. For the research investigation i selected qualitated method an action teaching research. With a group of six students i studyied by the method of word formation groups and than i compare them with rest of a class, which was teaching by traditional method of teaching. In conclusion of a diploma thesis i tested the both groups. In a final test i founded out, that the method of word formation groups is more effective than the tradiotional method. Resumé The diploma thesis represents a complex teaching method which is especially suitable for educating of students in their first year at secondary schools, or in the last year at lower secondary schools. This method introduces students to the basics of the secondary school literary education and to the "summary" characteristics of a literary work. The aim of the method is to guide students by means of the method of experiential pedagogy to acquire the whole complex of knowledge and skills in the field of interpretation and analysis which is required for the State part of school-leaving examinations. The method also aims to create and strengthen mutual relationships inside teams of students and the ability of students to cooperate more closely. The method is built up on four starting points: the constructivism, the creation or creativity, the comparison, and dramatic texts with drama education. We have chosen dramatic texts because, from the point of view of literary-theoretical analysis, they contain all the basic categories of "syuzhet" genres; all, apart from narration and narrators. In addition, and in contrast to epics, the interpretation of drama becomes a greater challenge due to the "gaps" which must be filled by the reader. An investigation into the effectiveness of assessment methods in Accounting for grade12 in Ehlanzeni District, Mpumalanga Province

Thesis (M.Ed.(Curriculum Studies)) -- University of Limpopo, 2022 / The liability for the decline in performance in Grade 12 Accounting learners in Ehlanzeni District has been levelled against lack of resources in schools, teachers’ inability to execute their duties and poorly trained teachers. Arising from this indictment, this study was conducted to investigate the effectiveness of assessment methods used for Grade 12 Accounting learners in Sikhulile and Mgwenya Circuits in Ehlanzeni District of Mpumalanga Province. A qualitative survey case study was used as a research design. Data was collected using one-to-one interviews among five Accounting teachers, five Heads of Department and five Principals. Qualitative data was presented using thematic and narrative analysis. The key findings were: (1) inadequacy of Accounting workshops and non-attendance by teachers, (2) lack of pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) by Accounting teachers, (3) Accounting content gaps among learners and difficulties in the content area such as Balance Sheet and Cash Flow Statement, (4) shortage of Accounting Learning Teaching Support (LTSM), (5) inadequacies in pedagogical technological devices for teaching, learning and assessment in Accounting, (6) poor teaching and assessment methods used in Accounting and (7) inadequate support from the Department of Education. The study recommends increased frequency of workshops and making attendance compulsory, strategies to improve the pedagogical content knowledge of Accounting teachers, providing in-service training in Accounting to EMS teachers, improved supply of educational resources, improving the schools’ digital infrastructure such as internet connectivity and accessibility to digital devices, improving teachers’ pedagogical skills and digital skills and palpable Departmental support to teachers
