Maternal mediation of writing in young children: a comparison between Hong Kong and Beijing. / CUHK electronic theses & dissertations collection

January 2009 (has links)
In Study 2, I further refined these scales and created an additional measure of commentary mediation, reflecting, in part, socio-emotional-regulation aspects of the writing interaction process. Across both Hong Kong and Beijing, these three measures of literate mediation, print mediation, and commentary mediation, were examined in relation to cognitive/metalinguistic awareness skills and Chinese reading and writing skills in three groups of children and their mothers. These groups included 63 Hong Kong third year kindergartners, 43 Beijing third year kindergartners, and 49 Beijing first graders. Results of Study 2 showed that mothers of kindergarten children tended to use lower level mediation strategies, such as stroke and component segmentation, and allowed less autonomy during the joint writing process. In contrast, mothers of first graders tended to use higher level mediation strategies, such as character level mediation, and allowed more autonomy, during this process. Results of the commentary mediation analyses demonstrated that Hong Kong mothers offered more negative than positive responses compared to Beijing mothers, particularly for kindergartners. In addition, the literate mediation and print mediation scale scores were significantly correlated with Chinese reading and writing in both Hong Kong and Beijing K3 children, but not in Beijing first graders. Scores on the literate mediation scale explained 11% to 25% unique variance in literacy skills in Beijing K3 children and reading skills in Hong Kong K3 children, even with maternal education, nonverbal reasoning, visual skills and metalinguistic awareness statistically controlled. In Hong Kong K3 children, children's orthographic awareness partially mediated the relation between literate mediation and Chinese word reading. Of all commentary mediation measures included, only the process mediation measure, focused on specific comments toward children's effort or strategies, was found to be uniquely associated with Chinese word reading and writing in Hong Kong K3 children and significantly related to Chinese word reading in Beijing K3 children with children's age, nonverbal reasoning and maternal education statistically controlled. Study 3 extended and tested the maternal mediation measure to Pinyin writing in Beijing K3 children. Maternal Pinyin mediation was uniquely associated with Chinese word reading even apart from children's general cognitive skills, maternal education, and phonological awareness. / The present research was among the first attempts to analyze the nature of maternal mediation of writing in Chinese and its association with literacy skills. The findings highlight the importance of maternal mediation of writing in preschool children's independent literacy development in Chinese across Hong Kong and Beijing. / This dissertation consisted of three studies investigating the nature of maternal mediation of writing among kindergarten and first grade children and their mothers across the two prominent Chinese societies of Hong Kong and Beijing and further examined the associations of maternal mediation of writing with cognitive /metalinguistic abilities and literacy skills in Chinese cross-culturally. In Study 1, two scales of literate mediation and print mediation based on mother-child writing interactions were created and refined. These scales, developed following work on Hebrew by Aram and Levin (2001; 2004), were modified and tested among 67 Hong Kong mother-child dyads from three grade levels---second year kindergarten, third year kindergarten, and first grade. The results showed that mothers' use of lower-level memorization strategies tended to be negatively associated with their children's reading skills, whereas mothers' higher level analytic scaffolding strategies were positively correlated with reading skills, even with age, grade level, nonverbal reasoning, and maternal education statistically controlled. / Lin, Dan. / Adviser: Catherine McBride-Chang. / Source: Dissertation Abstracts International, Volume: 72-11, Section: A, page: . / Thesis (Ph.D.)--Chinese University of Hong Kong, 2009. / Includes bibliographical references (leaves 148-163). / Electronic reproduction.

Souza, Marcos Lopes de 28 May 2007 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2016-06-02T19:35:30Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 TeseMLS.pdf: 1653692 bytes, checksum: eb2ea0ad8059be8ba8b9179d97ecc922 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2007-05-28 / This research describes and discusses about the conjuncture and the movements of the program so-called as Curricular Integration Activity between Teaching, Research and Outreach (ACIEPE) since its implantation in Sao Carlos Federal University from year 2002 up to 2006, analyzing in a focused way one of its proposals. During the investigation the information have been acquired by interviews with the Program s idealizers and executers, also by the Program s (ACIEPE) documents, questionnaires applied to the coordinators of the program proposals, the registries of one of the program s proposal meetings and by interviews realized with the participants of this experience. The ACIEPE Program had been created during a period in which UFSCar was trying to consolidate itself as a University based on the concepts of democratic participation, academic competence and Social commitment, a perspective that contested the neoliberal politics, which, has occupied a large area into University space. The implantation of the program occurred within a period in which UFSCar s graduation courses were passing through a curriculum reformulation process that began since the establishment of Brazilian Universities Institutional Valuation Program (PAIUB). Initially, the ACIEPE was incorporated to the courses s curriculum as an elective discipline, lately, within the curricular flexibilization, it happened to be a complementary curricular activity. Within the period comprehended between the years 2002-2006, 49 different proposals were done, some of them were re-offered, and now 107 classes can be counted in. New projects of ACIEPEs have been offered each semester (at least five), at the same time, new professors have adhered to different proposals of ACIEPEs demonstrating that the program have been recognized as an opportunity for curricular innovation. Because of the thematics that were chosen, the outreach guidelines, the external public and the methodological approaches, the ACIEPEs presented different faces, which made it different from traditional academic spaces. The proposals of ACIEPEs were consolidated as educative spaces; constituted especially by multidisciplinary teams, which involved learning and professors from distinct majors. In those spaces the formation offered to the graduation students could embrace things beyond the society of the knowledge, involving aspects like citizenship, social equality, environment sustainability, social cooperation, Human values and etc., increasing the student s knowledge experiences, which includes the interaction with different social groups. The practice of the inseparability between teaching, research and outreach at ACIEPEs occurred in a diffuse and incipient manner, overall, when it comes to the interlocution between university and External community. Focusing on one of the experiences of the ACIEPE program entitled as The comprehension about biological knowledge essence and its relationship with Science and biology on Basic Education it could have been evidenced that the ACIEPEs program s intentions were approximately reached, especially the ones related to the construction of a space that could give to the graduation students also professional education and citizenship, even, establishing a strong link between University and several social segments. At the same time, this ACIEPE, basing on its specific objectives and on the perspective of complexity, can be denominated, besides its own limitations, as a curricular innovation, based on the construction of dialogue spaces among the disciplines, whereas it made possible to the participants, especially, the biology teachers and the undergraduate level students of biological sciences course, to find a new significance for the nature of biological knowledge trough the articulation with Philosophy and sociology.

Cardio-pulmonary resuscitation knowledge of registered nurses working in private hospital wards

Hutchings, Pauline Linda Joan 06 1900 (has links)
Cardiopulmonary resuscitation is a skill that all registered nurses should maintain. In South Africa, a new healthcare trend towards accreditation in this skill is emerging. It is assumed that nurses are competent in cardiopulmonary resuscitation, but studies indicate a problem of poor retention ofboth knowledge and skills in this area. A non-experimental, quantitative, descriptive and contextual research project was undertaken with the aim of exploring the knowledge of cardiopulmonary resuscitation of registered nurses working in the wards of selected private hospitals in the Western Cape Peninsula. A convenience sample of thirty registered nurses completed a multiple-choice questionnaire. The questions in the questionnaire were derived from a literature review as well as the basic and advanced cardiopulmonary resuscitation algorithms. Analysis of the data indicated that the level of knowledge of cardiopulmonary resuscitation was inadequate particularly in the areas of medication and the rationale underlying interventions. Recommendations that were made included proposals that cardiopulmonary resuscitation training programmes be revised; and that employers ensure that registered nursing ,staff are formally trained on an annual basis. / Health Studies / M.A. (Nursing Science)

Teoria, proposta e aplicação de uma sequência didática em Educação Linguística: trabalhando os conceitos de língua, gramáticas e normas linguísticas no nono ano do Ensino Fundamental / Theory, proposal and application of a didactic sequence in Linguistic Education: introducing the concepts of language, grammars and linguistic norms in the ninth year of elementary school

The teaching-learning process of the Portuguese Language discipline presents a challenge for both teachers and students, and much of that is due to the lack of recognition of linguistic diversity (Lima, 2014). There is a tendency in the school environment to appreciate just one linguistic norm, ignoring the other different ones that are part of societys life. Therefore, the students get into conflict, because what is presented to them as "the Portuguese Language" is far distant from their personal experience with the language. In order to eliminate this conflict, the National Curriculum Guidelines and the Schoolbook National Program establish the insertion of the language variation theme in the syllabus of the Portuguese Language courses. However, a gap still exists in the treatment of this subject. The concern of filling this gap motivated this work, which aimed to propose and apply a didactic sequence about the following topics: language, grammars and linguistic norms in order to contribute with the achievement of an effective Linguistic Education (BAGNO and RANGEL, 2005). These three main subjects generated developments that fomented the discussion of the following topics: language variation and linguistic discrimination. The didactic sequence consists of eight steps that intercalate moments of classroom instruction and practical activities. The application of the proposed didactic sequence occurred in a ninth grade class of elementary school of an Integrated Center of Public Education located in the western area of the city of Rio de Janeiro. The tools used to identify the assimilation of the content by the students were the evaluation of class participation and the results of four specific activities. Considering the complexity and originality of the concepts presented in the didactic sequence, the performance of the students was satisfactory. The students also answered two questionnaires: one at the beginning of the sequence and the other at the end of it, which were designed to evaluate if there was a change concerning the understanding of the existence of linguistic variation and linguistic discrimination. The first questionnaire revealed that the majority of the students had already suffered and practiced linguistic discrimination; the second one showed that most of the students assimilated the notion of linguistic discrimination and broke with the concept of right and wrong in language. As a secondary objective, this work aimed to leave a legacy for teachers, because, with this dissertation, the action will not be limited to a single class only, but may contribute to Portuguese Language teaching in several schools. Also, it leaves a legacy for researchers, since this record describes an example of an academic work that applied the principle of indivisibility between teaching, research and extension. The expectation is that, united to similar works, it could be possible to set a precedent of academic papers that are theoretically grounded, practical developed and, also, concerned to social and educational matters

A career guidance programme : training workshops for community workers in disadvantaged communities

Todes, Karyn 12 September 2012 (has links)
D.Litt. et Phil. / A career guidance training workshop based on a taxi ride metaphor was developed to train teachers to offer an indigenous career guidance programme to students in disadvantaged communities. The innovation comprised a trainee's handbook as an adjunct to the workshop, structured workbooks for students in the classroom, and trainers' manuals for independent trainers. Principles of developmental research ensured that each phase was completed sequentially and successfully with the necessary material prerequisites and methodologies; this guided the process of workshop design and development through the problem analysis, design, developmental, and evaluation phases. Theories of career development and planning, and integrative life planning influenced the psychology behind the taxi ride model, whose objective was to help students gain a sense of mastery over the process of career decision-making and problem solving, thereby learning a life skill. The workbook was pilot-tested on two occasions, and four training workshops were pilot-tested with modifications made after each one. Group work principles ensured the workshops were experiential and educative. Workshop evaluation questionnaires further improved the innovation. Knowledge, Attitude and Self-efficacy scales, formulated in semantic differential form, were developed and refined to measure the success of the workshops by pre- and post-testing. Three more workshops were run with no revisions. Two hypotheses were formulated to measure the impact of the study; results revealed statistically significant changes in the knowledge and attitude scales, and positive changes in self-confidence levels in offering career guidance. There were no significant pre- and post-test differences between the groups for the biographical factors, except educational qualifications which did influence the findings. In addition, an observation schedule revealed that trainees had acquired great skill in applying the workbook. Limitations of the study included the absence of a control group, and an impact evaluation of the interactive dialogue between teacher and student. Future research in turn could focus on the impact the workbook has on the student. The contribution to psychology is that the indigenous South African practice model incorporates a rational and emotional process of career decision making, which can be applied by trained teachers and community leaders, rather than solely by professionals.

Co-creating a community : the Blair Atholl experience

Heunis, Evelyn 16 April 2014 (has links)
M.A. (Clinical Psychology) / In this project, the author explores, analyses and interprets the experiences of a group of students and teachers who worked together at a farm school for almost a year. Certain pertinent questions relating to the nature of therapy, training, research and community work are examined. The dominant view is that therapy and community work are different activities, requiring different sets of skills, for which different training is needed. Fundamental to this discussion is the issue of what is meant by community. The author proposes that community can be usefully conceptualised as the meaning people give to the evolving processes of their inter-connectedness, and their co-creation of ideas. Furthermore, these processes contain the potential for individuals to experience personal shifts that may be described variously as learning/growth/change/transformation. There is impetus for transformation at the interface between connectedness and disconnectedness. This renders unnecessary any differentiation between the process of training students for clinical and community work. Central to all training would be a person's ability to connect and utilise this connectedness, or its counterpart of disconnectedness, in a meaningful way. Essentially all interactions, including those in a training, therapy, research and community context, could then be viewed as a process of co-creation around people's sense of connectedness disconnectedness. The implications of all the above are that the processes of co-creation of community constitute fundamental elements of training, therapy, research and community work. The author uses an alternative research paradigm, subscribing to the principles of ecological inquiry, according to which research and intervention are inseparable.

Strategic plan for the reconstruction of nursing education within a primary health care approach

Bezuidenhout, Lynette 15 August 2012 (has links)
M.Cur. / The entire country is currently in a process of reconstruction that inevitably lead to reconstruction within the health care system. The ANC (African National Congress) formulated a National Health Plan based on primary health care that is a practical expression of providing an effective and equitable health care to all inhabitants of the country. Recognising the need for transformation, a process was initiated by the African National Congress (ANC) to develop an overall National Health Plan based on the Primary Health Care approach (ANC, 1994: 7) . In the light of these present needs, the vision is to develop a strategy to empower our professional nurses that can effectively implement primary health care whilst operating within the limitations of the existing resources (Human Resource Committee for Health, 1994:5). The context of the study is applicable to the Northern Region of the North West Province. There are various courses available to empower professional nurses to primary health care, but for the purpose of the study is the Diploma Course in Clinical Nursing Science, Health Assessment, Treatment and Care described
