In the present thesis, the author aims at the issue of visual editor in television newscast. In practical part of the thesis, particular occupations of visual editors are characterized. The characteristics were conducted on the grounds of author's research in newsrooms at TV Nova and ČT 24. Furthermore, the practical part comprises comparison and description of differences among the observed occupations. It also provides analysis of visual information Události, the main news broadcast of Czech Television. Theoretical part covers issues related to the occupation of visual editor in television news broadcast such as digitalisation, computer graphics, principles of visual language in television news and characteristics of television studios at TV Nova and ČT 24.

The diploma thesis deals with a comparative analysis of two singing competitions, Zpívá celá rodina and Česko hledá Superstar. The comparison is based on the analysis of the shows Zpívá celá rodina and Česko hledá Superstar. Since the analysed television singing competitions were broadcast in different eras, significant differences between the two television shows can be observed. The theoretical part deals with television entertainment, the definition of television singing contest formats, as well as the description of media audiences and television fans. The thesis includes a brief description of the TV music shows and singing competitions that were available on the domestic market. The following comparative analysis is based on comparing the two mentioned singing competitions. The thesis presents the findings that the different eras contributed significantly to the form of the television singing competitions and also had a considerable influence on the preferences of the television audience. The thesis also provides a rationale as to why the the above mentioned shows were so popular with television audiences and whether the concept of Zpívá celá rodina could still be successful today. Television viewers have no material control over the broadcast program. They cannot choose the time, when they will watch selected program that is under the command of the broadcasters. Television serial is the most asymmetric form. Every episode of the given serial promotes the next one and provides audience in advance. It is very interesting to find out, how people, who download serials, treat them. They can watch the serials, how they want. Presented work, through the qualitative analysis of the interviews with people, who watch downloaded shows, inquires whether the material control over the program sequence is the main and only motive for downloading, and also how these persons use the serials and how they communicate about them. The results and conclusions are compared with an inquiry about the respondents' way of (present or previous) watching TV (and especially serials).

This work is dedicated to exploring television series Okres na severu written by Jaroslav Dietl and directed by Evžen Sokolovský. The series was filmed in 1980 in the Czechoslovak television and falls into the normalization period (1968-1989) in Czechoslovakia. The aim of this study was to conduct a critical discourse analysis (CDA) of series Okres na severu, with special emphasis on the political power of Communism (Marxist-Leninist ideology) and its use of propaganda through the mass media (television). The text analyzed the discourse of the concept of a propaganda series and tried to answer the question of to what extent and whether the strip Okres na severu is a part of the propaganda. The main concept of this text was a discourse that we can define as a set of codes and rules used in producing the meanings related to any topic. Fairclough concept of critical discourse was chosen for its clear division of the so-called three-dimensional discourse (the text, discursive practice and social practice), which focuses on the interconnection of all three relationships (communication events) and the rules of discourse to explore the relationship to society and social conditions. A purpose of the Diploma Thesis Reflection of literary output in Česká televize in 2006, 2010 and 2014 broadcasting and their impact on readership is to describe, summarize and compare reports dedicated to literature in selected Czech Television's programs, and then try to identify their influence on book sales and marketability of books. It summarizes the available evidence on the issue of reading culture, reading a book market surveys in the theoretical part, also mentions the definition of reviews and literary critique. In practical part it compares reports dedicated to literature in selected programs according to genre and language first, followed by comparison with the books' titles sales rank, as it is published on Union of Czech booksellers and publishers website. On the base of this comparison, this thesis tries to define the influence of the television broadcasting on books sales.

The diploma thesis deals with the image and reflection of the war in Afghanistan and Iraq in the American television series. It looks at how and if the American television series reflect the wars, in which the United States of America participate. It analyzes the role of television series in the life of the individual and examines their potential impact on society. It pays attention to the TV series as a means of propaganda and summarizes the development of war entertainment production. The diploma thesis documents various genres of television series, in which the war in Afghanistan or in Iraq is reflected. Master thesis on the basis of observations of different genres evaluates how the war is seen. Among the genres include war series or crime and medical drama. It notes which war is devoted more attention or which war is seen more critical. Diploma thesis watch in episodes the presentation of the war, the location of the storyline and the main protagonist, it is also interested in military terminology and displaying military equipment. It also compares fictional stories or motives to the events that really happened in these wars. The conclusion summarizes the most common themes and elements of war, puts them in context and compares with reality.

This diploma thesis primarily deals with the reviews of Czechoslovak television series in the weekly print Tvorba, central press organ of Communist Party of Czechoslovakia, in the normalisation period of 70's and 80's. In the second place, it also deals with other relevant articles that are somehow related to the television series issues in general. Additionally, it pays attention to formal aspects of the reviews studied in the thesis (language specifics, form, space and development of the television reviews section etc.) The thesis is divided into two main parts: theoretical and analytical. The theoretical part brings information about the cultural-political weekly print Tvorba, it outlines social and historical context of the period traditionally called normalisation and last but not least gives theoretical background about the phenomenon of Czechoslovak television series. The analytical part works directly with the reviews found and also other relevant articles from Tvorba. On the basis of these particular reviews and articles, the main aim is to describe ideas and opinions of cultural editors and reviewers on the form, art rendering and role of television series as a specific genre of television production and, at the same time, to bring an overview of what aspects were on the reviewed series...

The goal of this study was to find out how TV series from the normalization era written by Jaroslav Dietl showed women and their issues. I focused on the 70's and 80's TV series, whose stories take place at the time when they were made. First, I set ten model situations based on the professional literature. Then I applied them on selected female characters from the chosen series and determined whether these model situations were used (heroine was not displayed stereotypically) or not (heroine was displayed stereotypically). I applied a similar system on ten films from the normalization era to compare the characters with each other, to compare Dietl's TV series with each other and to compare his work with other works. I found out that Jaroslav Dietl fulfilled the stereotypes about women at that time, but only to some extent. Ratio of female characters beyond stereotypes to stereotype characters was 26:34 (rounded 0.76). He also used very often a character of a submisive woman who is usually displayed in her home with her family. Another finding is that Dietl's work offers several distinctive heroines, namely Alžběta Čeňková, Dana Králová (both from TV series Nemocnice na kraji města) and Ivana Pešková (TV series Inženýrská odysea). Diploma thesis "The development of teen drama since 1990s. On the example of TV series Beverly Hills 90210 and Gossip girl." is thematic and narrative analysis of two American teen drama television series, Beverly Hills 90210 and Gossip girl. Teen drama genre has been developing for more than twenty years and the aim of my research is to compare the display of the youth in teen drama since the early 1990s until present. In the theoretical part of my work I present a sociological and culturological basis for study of youth and adolescence, as well as classification of serial production within television studies and description of its impact on development of teen drama. The empirical part includes qualitative theme analysis of each of the series and narrative analysis of characters.

The thesis has a goal to investigate the audience of reality shows available on Czech broadcasting market. Different types of shows will be analysed using selected parameters through the quantitative analysis. We will look for the similar and different parameters of audiences. The thesis is mostly focused on the show Hotel Paradise and its qualitative analysis.
