A symbolic reading physiology in habitual and non-habitual young and adult readerships.

Silva, Edleuza Ferreira da 05 April 2010 (has links)
This paper deals with empirical and documentary research data culled from 3 different habitual and non-habitual readerships comprised of youngsters and adults. The first group comprehends students from the Sacred Heart Community Pre- College Preparatory Course, located in the Our Lady of the Sacred Heart parish. The second group comprehends regular readers from Paulo Setúbal Public Library. Both sites are located in Vila Formosa district, East Area of the city of São Paulo. The third group was formed by collaborators of the Literary Nucleus of the Art, Education and Culture Experimental Lab belonging to the School of Education of Universidade de São Paulo (FEUSP). The aim of the present work is to reveal the main behavioral and educational issues which generate both the difficulties and ease of understanding literary works, and which occur along the formation of readerships themselves. Reading formation presupposes herein a symbolic reading physiology, which settles upon family, school and cultural space-times and shows itself through the figure of the reader, in a process which lies beyond readers´ actions. The research reflects on readerships based on their own perception about their track records in reading literary works, which were registered in prep courses´ students´ essays, in interviews with library readers and in poetic and narrative texts written by Literary Nucleus collaborators. Thus there is herein the prevalence of hermeneutics marked by an emerging paradigm, that is, by multiple looks which belong to several viewpoints, including that of the reader, framing the subject matter so that relations between reader and reading process might be verified, the last being interpreted as either pleasant or annoying. Theoretical references are mainly Gilbert Durand´s works (Anthropological Structures of the Imaginary and The Symbolic Imagination), supported by the understanding of the imaginary in Gaston Bachelard, Danielle Perin Rocha Pitta, Marcos Ferreira-Santos, Maurice Merleau-Ponty and Paul Ricoeur, as well as by thoughts about literature, art and education in Antonio Candido, Edmir Perrotti, Paulo Freire, Michel de Certeau, among others.

Le rôle de l’inscription idéologique du lecteur dans la compréhension du texte / The role of the reader's ideological inscription in text comprehension

El Bannane, Abdellatif 09 December 2010 (has links)
The study of texts comprehension has always taken into consideration the reader’s knowledge which Le Ny (2005) defines as real representations. However, this knowledge can be beliefs even ideologies (van Dijk, 1998). If the comprehension of texts appeals to the specific and\or general knowledge of the reader in connection with the information contained in the text to build a coherent representation, this comprehension would be mediatised by the reader’s ideological inscription. In this work, we have led three series of experiments studying the role that can play readers’ ideology in the comprehension of texts. The first series of experiences, realized on paper with French from Maghreb origins, put in evidence through two types of texts (neutral and ideological) that the comprehension is sensitive to reader’s ideology. The second series of experiments, implemented on computers, has confirmed the results previously obtained and has shown that the readers had not read these two types of texts so quickly. To fulfill a methodological gap, we have widened, in the third series of experiment, our approach to another population in order to dissociate the effect of the reader’s origin and that of its ideology. The results obtained show that the comprehension is much more sensitive to the reader’s ideology rather than to its origin. The readers who they are French or of Maghrebian origin, tend to accept less the information conveyed by an ideological text when they disagree with their beliefs even if these last ones are present in the text and plausible to explain the event.

Epstein, Daniel January 2017 (has links)
This thesis aimed to investigate the effects of using Sobek Text Miner to improve literacy. Sobek is a tool capable of extracting relevant information from texts and representing them in a graphical way. The thesis is supported by meaningful learning theory, conceptual maps theory and several research theories which indicate that graphical representation of words may improve reading capability and word decoding. According to David Ausubel, meaningful learning occurs through the assimilation of new concepts and ideas and association of those to what the person already knows. Using text mining with graphical representation of information, we seek to provide students with a graphical representation of a text. This text representation is similar to a concept map, helping students assimilate and comprehend that information. In Sobek’s representation, the relationship between terms considered relevant to text comprehension may assist students to better understand the meaning of each term and demonstrate relationships that are presented in the text, improving context comprehension. Furthermore, the relationship between terms may help information assimilation, once it relates the new information with previous known information This project conducted a study using Sobek text miner in classroom to support student’s literacy. In order to assess the tool’s possible benefits in reading and comprehension activities, we designed a series of classroom activities. To evaluate those activities, qualitative and quantitative approaches were used. The study was conducted in two primary schools, with students from 5th grade and 8th grade. Interviews were also made with the teachers and students, inquiring them about the tool's and main functions and its ability to help students from a literacy point of view. The study shows that students answered more correct question when using Sobek than when no support technology was used. Also, both students and teachers approved the software and agreed that it does improve student’s text comprehension. It also describes an evaluation of Sobek's capability to extract terms considered relevant for text comprehension.

Age Differences in Revision of Causal Belief

Simmons, Kristi M. 01 December 2011 (has links)
Inductive reasoning (IR) requires efficient working memory (WM). Research shows that the prefrontal cortex (PFC) is involved during WM tasks and that PFC functioning declines with age. The ability to comprehend and update text-based information requires an intact PFC and efficient WM and IR. The current study presented a series of messages about the investigation of a warehouse fire to 48 young and 48 older adults. One message contained a piece of misinformation which another message corrected later. It was hypothesized that a memory cue to the misinformation with the correction statement should benefit older adults the most during the updating process. A text-based level and situation model level measured updating. The text-based level is only information from the text but is not necessarily verbatim. The situation model level is the overall meaning of the text, including inferences and assumptions. Results show that unlike young adults, older adults are not capable of recalling the text at the text-based level. However, older adults are capable of performing like young adults at the situation model level. This suggests that older adults are capable of updating causal information in text material as long as a memory cue to the misinformation is provided within the correction statement.

The comprehension of emotions in narrative texts : the role of embodied knowledge

Marmolejo-Ramos, Fernando January 2007 (has links)
"This work explores how current embodied theories of cognition can account for the comprehension of narrative texts. Theoretically, this thesis develops a framework for the study of narrative text comprehension by linking current advances in embodied theories of cognition, discourse processing, and neurosciences. Experimentally, two experiments are reported in which participants were required to read passages of text implying emotional states. The coherence of critical sentences in relation to the preceding text was manipulated in terms of both the emotional adjectives used and the sensory-motor component. In the first experiment, three tasks were used to index the effect of the manipulations on the critical sentences. The first was an on-line naming task in which response times to name emotional labels which matched the implied emotional state of the texts were recorded. [...] The second experiment used backward masking in the naming task with the aim of providing a more sensitive index of the effect of the text manipulations on on-line processing." / Master of Applied Science by research
