A presente tese busca analisar as políticas educacionais desenvolvidas durante o período de 1937 à 1945 e 1951 a 1954, período em o antigo estado do Rio de Janeiro esteve governado pelo Comandante Ernani do Amaral Peixoto, que foi interventor federal durante todo o período do Estado Novo e depois retornou ao governo do estado como governador eleito. Este longo período a frente do estado do Rio de Janeiro proporcionou o desenvolvimento de uma política educacional continuada.Para compreender a dimensão das suas ações em relação à política educacional torna-se imprescindível analisar a figura do Comandante Amaral Peixoto, a sua participação na política fluminense, a biografia e as redes de sociabilidade construídas por ele. Este estudo importa em refletir sobre suas escolhas e investimentos na área da educação, além de buscar entender que influências sofreu para implantar as medidas que politicamente fez valer no estado, principalmente no âmbito da educação. Investigo a política educacional desenvolvida no período citado frisando especialmente a política desenvolvida para a escola do trabalho, as escolas superiores, a educação especial, a educação de adultos, a educação rural (escolas típicas rurais e praianas) e a educação física, abordando ainda o desenvolvimento da cultura nas ações relacionadas às missões culturais fluminenses, ao cinema educativo e museus que estavam ligados a educação nesta época, evidencio também a questão pedagógica através da analise da verificação de rendimentos e dos programas escolares desenvolvidos pelo departamento de educação. O papel do professor fluminense no desenvolvimento das políticas educacionais foi discutido a partir da formação de professores e do papel do estado do Rio como referência modernizadora na educação, traçando o perfil do professor fluminense nas décadas de 1930, 1940 e 1950, examinando a formação inicial destes professores, a formação continuada que era oferecida a eles e as correntes pedagógicas que influenciaram este professor na sua formação / This thesis aims to analyze educational policies developed during the period from 1937 to 1945 and from 1951 to 1954. In this period the former Rio de Janeiro State was ruled by Commander Ernani do Amaral Peixoto. The Commander was a federal intervenor during the New State, and later was elected as Rio de Janeiro State governor. This long period ahead of the Rio de Janeiro state allowed a continuing education policy. Tounder stand the magnitude of their actions subject becomes essential to analyze the Commander Amaral Peixoto, their participation in the state politics, biography and social networks. This study discuss his choices and investments in education, and seek tounder stand the influences suffered by the Comander to take his politics measures, especially related to education. At this thesis is investigate the educational policy developed in them entioned period, stressing the policy developed especially for: Professional school, higher education, special education, adult education, rural education (rural and beach-typical schools) and physical education. Still addressing the development of activities related to cultural missions, the educational the ater and museums that were linked to education at this time. REVOLUÇÃO E REALIDADE SOCIAL NA IMPRENSA TROTSKISTA BRASILEIRA DOS ANOS 1930 / REVOLUTION AND SOCIAL REALITY BRAZILIAN TROTSKYIST PRESS IN THE 1930S

Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The historiography of Communist dissidents of the Communist Party of Brazil is linked mostly to making studies on the trajectory of their political organizations aligned to the International Left Opposition, the Internationalist Communist League (odd period in the Communist International) and the Fourth International (period which assumes decisively the party way). To a lesser extent, it focused on specific moments of life and political criticism of those aligned to Leon Trotsky (the "1930 Revolution", the antifascist struggle and uprisings of 1935). The initiative to minimally modify "the current state of things" led to questioning of his political press and particularly its itinerary in the 1930s. In a way, the viewing of little aspects present in the current historiography enabled recounting a live track (despite the time limit on the amount of available sources and information) from two issues we define as "revolution and social reality". The breadth and general condition of these two axes allowed making contact with the Trotskyist newspapers and newsletters (available digitally by the Documentation Centre of the Movement Worker Mario Pedrosa belonging to the Documentation Centre and Memory from Universidade Estadual Paulista) and specifying them. Belonging to the line of research entitled "Migration and Labour , this dissertation defined the focus of two consecutive movements for the established axis. While the former sought to identify the key themes of the international Trotskyist revolution passed by the Brazilian Trotskyist press (the Soviet Union , the Communist International , War and Fascism) and highlight the theoretical and political content raised by these from the movement flow of ideas from other "stops" while the second sought to reflect on the world of work linked to social reality, particularly on capitalist development in Brazil, the trade union and labor laws erected and political dynamics of the working class in the 1930s . In short, I hope that this work will contribute to enrich the theme of Brazilian Trotskyists in the 1930s from redirecting the form of a dialogue of the historian with its object and source of research. / A historiografia da dissidência comunista do Partido Comunista do Brasil está vinculada majoritariamente a confecção de estudos sobre a trajetória de suas organizações políticas alinhadas a Oposição Internacional de Esquerda, a Liga Comunista Internacionalista (período fracionário na Internacional Comunista) e a Quarta Internacional (período que assume decisivamente a forma partido). Em menor medida, ela incidiu sobre momentos específicos da vida e da crítica política daqueles alinhados a Leon Trotsky (a Revolução de 1930 , a luta antifascista e os levantes militares de 1935). A iniciativa de modificar minimamente o estado atual de coisas motivou a problematização de sua imprensa política e, em especial, do seu itinerário na década de 1930. De certo modo, a visualização de aspectos pouco presentes na historiografia vigente possibilitou historiar um vivo percurso (apesar do limite temporal diante da quantidade de fontes e informações disponíveis) a partir de duas questões que definimos por revolução e realidade social . A amplitude e a condição genérica destes dois eixos permitiram tomar contato com os jornais e boletins trotskistas (disponibilizados digitalmente pelo Centro de Documentação do Movimento Operário Mário Pedrosa pertencente ao Centro de Documentação e Memória da Universidade Estadual Paulista) e especificá-los. Pertencente a linha de pesquisa intitulada Migrações e Trabalho, esta dissertação definiu o foco de dois movimentos consecutivos relativos aos eixos estabelecidos. Enquanto o primeiro tratou de identificar as temáticas fundamentais da revolução internacional repercutidas pela imprensa trotskista brasileira (a União Soviética, a Internacional Comunista, o Fascismo e a Guerra) e evidenciar o conteúdo teórico e político suscitado por estas a partir do movimento de circulação de ideias provenientes de outras paragens ; o segundo buscou refletir sobre a realidade social vinculada ao mundo do trabalho, em particular, sobre o desenvolvimento capitalista no Brasil, a legislação sindical e do trabalho erigida e a dinâmica política da classe trabalhadora na década de 1930. Em suma, esperamos que o presente trabalho contribua para enriquecer a temática dos trotskistas brasileiros dos anos 1930, a partir da reorientação da forma de diálogo do historiador com seu objeto e fonte de pesquisa.

Magdalena Bystrzak The "Slovak Question" in Early Alexander Matuška's Works ABSTRACT The presented thesis deals with the issue of the "Slovak question" in early Alexander Matuška's works of 1930s. The author has in mind that A. Matuška's attitude towards the Slovak question was shaped by his contacts with the Czech intellectual elite during his studies at the Charles University in Prague (1928-1934). She comes out of an assumption that the "Slovak question" has mainly a cultural character in early A. Matuška's works. In the first part of the thesis, the author tries to show the character of the discourse on the "Slovak question" in 1930s. By researching debates on the "Slovak question" in representative cultural journals of the time, the author tries to point out that the "Slovak question" debate was not only about the emancipation of a the Slovak nation, but also about the modernization of the Slovak society. A. Matuška's early works are interpreted as a part of this effort. Both the second and the third parts are devoted to those aspects of A. Matuška's early works that the author considers as the critic's proposals for the modernization of the Slovak society. The present work undertakes a comprehensive evaluation of Prague's interwar architecture made by German-speaking architects. It works with a methodological framework built on three overlapping and intertwining layers. The first layer introduces the socio-political- historical-cultural conditions of the origin of architecture in Prague. It presents Prague as the main centre of the Czechoslovak Republic, specifies the role of the Prague City Hall, approaches the Jewish question, discusses Prague bilingualism and details the main platforms for German-speaking architects. The second layer divides the heterogeneous group of German-speaking architects according to their cultural circles and demonstrates the specifics of each cultural circle based on several case studies. Architects Rudolf Hildebrand, Adolf Foehr and Fritz Lehmann were chosen for the German cultural circle. In the circuit on the borderline between the Czech and German cultural environments, the architects are always presented in pairs: Erwin Katona - Berthold Schwarz, Ernst Mühlstein / Viktor Fürth - Otto and Karl Kohn and Rudolf Wels - Martin Reiner. Kvinnlig organisering finns i många former och det har gjorts en del internationell och svensk forskning om det. Denna uppsats är skriven för att fylla i luckan angående den åländska kvinnoorganiseringen i form av Ålands Marthadistrikt. Marthaverksamheten startade på det finska fastlandet 1899 och kom till Åland 1912. 1932 firade de åländska marthorna 20-årsjubiléet av detta och det fanns deltagare från alla 32 föreningarna. Undersökningens syfte är att göra en organisationsstudie om Ålands Marthadistrikts verksamhet och dess värderingar 1932–1934 med utgångspunkt från teorin om privat och offentlig sfär. Detta görs med hjälp av tre frågeställningar som är: 1. Vilken verksamhet genomförde marthorna 1932–1934? 2. Vilka likheter och skillnader finns det mellan föreningarna inom distriktet? 3. Vilka värderingar eller ideologier ligger bakom verksamheten? För att uppfylla syftet används både en kvantitativ metod och en kvalitativ metod med fokus på textanalys. Materialet som används är hämtat från Ålands Marthadistriktsarkiv och består av styrelseprotokoll, årsberättelser, förteckningar och räkenskaper. Ålands Marthadistrikt ordnade en verksamhet som mest bestod av möten, föredrag, kurser, studiecirklar och samkväm. Varje år förekom en lite större tillställning som marthorna deltog i eller anordnade. Dessa var bland annat 20-årsjubiléet, presidentbesöket och den årliga Marthadagen. De föredrag och kurser som distriktet och föreningarna genomförde handlade om olika sorters hemvård eller hemslöjd exempelvis huslig ekonomi, madrasstillverkning, trädgårdsskötsel och sömnad. Kvinnosynen i distriktet var att kvinnorna skötte hemmet och därför fokuserade majoriteten av verksamheten på det. Dock uppmuntrade distriktet kvinnor att delta i saker utanför hemmet som arbete och politik. En annan viktig del av verksamheten var att ordna tillfällen där kvinnor kunde träffas och umgås vilket uppskattades stort bland medlemmarna. Resultat i undersökningen är att marthaverksamheten till största del verkade i den privata sfären hemmet och att den gjorde att kvinnorna fick en egen sfär frånskild männen i samhället. Dock fanns det även verksamhet som bidrog till att kvinnor kom in i den offentliga sfären och beblandades med männen i samhället / Women organisation has many forms, and these have been studied international and in Sweden in some degree. This essay is written with the purpose of filling the blank about the women organisation in Åland called Ålands Martha district. The Martha activity started on the Finnish mainland in 1899 and came to Åland 1912. In 1932, the Åland Marthas celebrated the 20th anniversary of this and there were participants from all 32 associations. The purpose of this survey is to do an organizational study about Ålands Martha district’s activity and values 1932-1934 starting from the theory of private and public sphere. This is done with the help of three questions which are: 1. What activities did the Marthas carry out in 1932-1934? 2. What similarities and differences are there between the associations within the district? 3. What values and ideologies are behind the activity? To fulfil the purpose, both a quantitative method and qualitative method with a focus on text analysis are used. The material used is taken from Åland’s Martha district’s archive and consists of board minutes, annual reports, listings, and accounts. Ålands Martha district arranged activities that mainly consisted of meetings, lectures, courses, study circles and parties. Each year a big happening took place in which the Marthas participated in or arranged. These were, among other things, the 20th anniversary, the president’s visit, and the yearly Martha day. The lectures and courses that the district and associations arranged were about different kind of house caring or home crafting, for example, home economics, mattress manufacturing, gardening, and sewing. The view of women in the district was that the women managed the home and therefore most of the activities focused on it. However, the district encouraged women to participate in things outside of the home such as work and politics. Another important part of the activities was to arrange occasions where women could meet and hang out which were highly appreciated between the members. The result of the survey is that the Martha’s activity mostly operated in the private sphere of the home and that it gave the women their own sphere separated from the men in the society. However, there were activities that contributed to women taking a place in the public sphere and being mixed up with the men in the society.

This thesis argues that Edith Wharton’s assessment of American ways and their meaning in her post-war fiction has been widely misread. Its title derives from French Ways and Their Meaning (1919), which she wrote to educate her countrymen about French culture and society. Making sense of America was as great a challenge to Wharton. Much of her later fiction was for a long time dismissed by critics on the grounds that she had failed to ‘make sense’ of America. Wharton was troubled by American materialism and optimism, yet she believed in a culturally significant future for her nation. She advocated – and wrote – an American fiction that looked critically at society and acknowledged the nation’s ties to Europe. Sometimes her assessment of American ways is reductive, and presented in a tone that her critics, then and since, found off- putting and snobbish. But her skepticism about American modernity was penetrating and prophetic, and has not been given its due. In criticism over the last two decades, a case for the place of Wharton’s post-war fiction in canons of feminism and modernism has been persuasively made. The thesis responds to these positions, but makes its own argument that the post-war writing reflects broader shift in American identity and ideology. The thesis is broadly historicist in its strategy, opening with a discussionofthereputationofthesetextsandthatoftheauthormoregenerally. Afterthat entry-point, it is organized thematically, with four chapters covering topics that are seen as key components of American ideology in Wharton’s post-war writing. These include modernity, gender equality, the American Dream of social mobility, and American exceptionalism. The thesis concludes with an assessment of Wharton’s prognostications in the context of twenty-first century America.
