The PhonicStick : Can intense training with the PhonicStick affecvt phonological ability in children with an atypical language development?

The present study investigates if intense training with the PhonicStick, a speech generating joystick developed originally as a communication device, has an effect on phonological ability in children with an atypical language development. Previous studies connected to the PhonicStick and phonological ability has not shown any improvement of phonological awareness due to training with the device. What is unique in the present study is the amount of intense training with the PhonicStick, something that has never been done before, as well as the focus on phonological ability instead of phonological awareness. The study consists of nine participating children between 4y;0m to 5y;7m of age, six of them diagnosed with an atypical language development by a speech and language pathologist, and three of them considered to follow a typical language development. Results indicate that intense training with the PhonicStick combined with conventional speech and language interventions may have an effect regarding phonological ability in children with an atypical language development on an individual level. Key words: The PhonicStick, phonological ability, atypical language development, intense training. / Syftet med den aktuella studien var att undersöka huruvida intensiv träning med the PhonicStick, en talgenererande joystick ursprungligen framtagen som ett kommunikationshjälpmedel, har en påverkan på fonologisk medvetenhet beträffande barn med en atypisk språklig utveckling. Tidigare studier gällande the PhonicStick och fonologisk förmåga har inte visat på någon förbättring gällande fonologisk medvetenhet genom träning med apparaten. Unikt för denna studie är mängden intensiv träning med the PhonicStick, samt att fokus ligger på fonologisk förmåga istället för fonologisk medvetenhet. I studien deltog nio barn i åldrarna 4;0 till 5;7 år. Sex av barnen har tidigare diagnosticerats av legitimerad logoped att ha en atypisk språklig utveckling. Tre av de deltagande barnen har bedömts följa en typisk språklig utveckling. Studiens resultat indikerar att intensiv träning med the PhonicStick, kombinerat med sedvanliga logopediska insatser, kan ha effekt gällande fonologisk förmåga hos barn med atypisk språkutveckling på individnivå. <p>Research shows that phonological processing skill is the greatest single predictor for reading ability and it is agreed that phonological awareness specific tasks correlate positively with literacy acquisition in typically developing children. Children with Down’s syndrome are at risk for reading acquisition difficulties, primarily because of their reduced phonological awareness and a phonological awareness based approach to literacy has been shown to be beneficial for them. The aim of the present study was to investigate if the PhonicStick can be used to initiate interest in language play in children with Down’s syndrome, in order to stimulate their reduced phonological awareness. Six children with Down’s syndrome between five and 15 years of age, currently enrolled within the UK educational system, were recruited to participate in six sessions; two sessions of pre- and post testing of their phonological awareness, and four intervention sessions with the PhonicStick. During the intervention sessions, the ability to remember the six phonemes of the PhonicStick, to generate three-phoneme combinations, to produce given target real words or non-words and to perform in phoneme substitution tasks using the PhonicStick were investigated. The results of this study show that the PhonicStick, with advantage, can be used to introduce and enhance phonological awareness in children with Down’s syndrome and that an increase in phonological awareness is possible even during a short time of practise with the PhonicStick. The use of the PhonicStick in group training : Can South African children age 5-6 improve their phonological awareness by using the PhonicStick?

Phonological awareness is the ability to recognize, reflect on and manipulate sound structures of a language. This ability has been shown to be crucial when acquiring literacy. The PhonicStick is a speech-generation communication device, which was initially developed for individuals with complex communication needs (CCN) though more recent research has focused on the effects of the device on factors important for literacy acquisition. In the present study the effects on phonological awareness were evaluated after seven group training sessions with the PhonicStick. The participants of the study were 20 typically developing South African 5-6 year old children. All participants where pre and post tested with The Phonological Awareness Test part c) isolation and a PhonicStick test which tested the ability to produce isolated phonemes and combinations of three phonemes with the device. The results of the study showed that training with the PhonicStick did not appear to improve results on The Phonological Awareness Test part c) isolation. However, it was found that the participants of the training group had improved their ability to manoeuvre the PhonicStick and to produce isolated phonemes and combinations of three phonemes. / Fonologisk medvetenhet är förmågan att känna igen, reflektera över och manipulera ett språks ljudstrukturer. Denna förmåga har visat sig vara betydelsefull vid tillägnandet av läs- och skrivförmåga. The PhonicStick är ett talgenererande kommunikationshjälpmedel som ursprungligen utformades för individer med komplexa kommunikationsbehov. Senare forskning har även fokuserat på hjälpmedlets effekter på faktorer som är viktiga vid tillägnandet av läs- och skrivförmåga. I föreliggande studie utvärderades effekterna på fonologisk medvetenhet hos 20 normalutvecklade sydafrikanska barn i åldrarna 5-6 år efter sju gruppträningstillfällen med the PhonicStick. Alla deltagare i studien pre- och posttestades med två test. Deltest c) från The Phonological Awareness Test rörande förmågan att isolera ljud, samt ett PhonicStick test. Detta testade förmågan att producera isolerade fonem och kombinationer bestående av tre fonem med the PhonicStick. Studiens resultat visade att träning med the PhonicStick inte resulterade i förbättrat resultat på The Phonological Awareness Test del c) isolerade fonem. Däremot tydde resultatet på att deltagarna i testgruppen förbättrade sin förmåga att styra the PhonicStick samt producera isolerade fonem och fonemkombinationer bestående av tre fonem.

Phonological awareness is an important part of the early literacy learning, although researchers disagree on how the connection arises. In the United Kingdom, synthetic phonics is a recommended way to teach literacy and the Jolly Phonics is a common approach within this method. In Sweden, mostly synthetic but also analytic methods are used for literacy teaching. The PhonicStick is developed as a communication device for impaired people and is based on the Jolly Phonics. In this study, the PhonicStick was being tested on children aged 5 and 6 years in mainstream pre-school classes to evaluate the use of it and its use for improvement of phonological awareness. The participating children were randomly divided into a test and a control group. All children were pre- and post-tested to analyse the possible improvement of parts of the phonological awareness. The test group went through three PhonicStick sessions, including different games and tests. The results from the pre- and post-tests of phonological awareness showed no significant differences between the test and control group. However, four out of five PhonicStick tests showed a significant improvement between session 1 and session 3. Does training with the PhonicStick improve phonological awareness? : A meta study including one new pilot study

The PhonicStick is a joystick which has been developed as a communicative device to be used by people with severe physical disabilities. During the developmental phase the possibility of using this device in order to train the phonological awareness of 6 – 8 year old children was examined. The studies conducted did not show any statistical difference in phonological awareness when this was tested with current tests after the children had trained with the PhonicStick. One explanation for this could be that the children had already begun to read and write in school. Therefore, a part of the present study was aimed at investigating if a difference in results on the norm referenced tests could be obtained if the children were 4-5 years old instead of 6-8. Parts of a norm referenced test for phonological awareness and an adapted test material for the PhonicStick were used for this evaluation. The 10 examined children were equally divided into a test and a control group.In addition, a meta study was performed, where all the studies relevant to phonological awareness and the PhonicStick were evaluated. Data from these studies were summarized, and processed statistically. Only two statistically significant (p&lt;0.05) differences could be shown after the training with the PhonicStick: both the test group and the control group obtained better results in the posttest in the test of “phoneme identification” and the test group performed better at the test “word production” then the control group. A possible interpretation of the results could be that there might be an intuitive phonological awareness that can not be tested with the current tests for phonological awareness. / The PhonicStick är en joystick som utvecklas med avsikt att bli ett kommunikationshjälpmedel att användas för människor med grava fysiska funktionsnedsättningar. Under utvecklingsarbetet undersöktes om det även kunde användas för att träna fonologisk medvetenhet hos 6-8-åringar. Undersökningarna visade inte någon statistisk skillnad i fonologisk medvetenhet när detta undersöktes med gängse normerade tester efter träning med the PhonicStick. En förklaring kunde vara att dessa barn redan tränats i att läsa och skriva i skolan. Därför undersöktes i en delstudie i detta arbete om en skillnad i resultat på de normerade testen kunde hittas om barnen var 4-5-år istället för 6-8. Delar av ett normerat test för fonologisk medvetenhet och ett bearbetat testmaterial för the PhonicStick användes vid utvärderingen. De 10 undersökta barnen var jämt fördelade på testgrupp och kontrollgrupp. Dessutom utfördes en metastudie, i vilken alla inom området fonologisk medvetenhet relevanta studier med the PhonicStick utvärderades. Data från dessa studier sammanfattades och bearbetades statistiskt. Endast två skillnader kunde med statistiskt säkerhet (p&lt;0,05) visas efter träning med the PhonicStick: både testgruppen och kontrollgruppen var bättre på posttestet i deltestet ”fonemidentifiering” och testgruppen presterade bättre på deltestet ”ordproduktion” än vad kontrollgruppen gjorde. En möjlig tolkning av resultaten kan vara att det kan finnas en intuitiv fonologisk medvetenhet som inte kan testas med gängse test för fonologisk medvetenhet.

The PhonicStick : A South African pilot study about learning how to use a communication device for early literacy training

<p>Literacy is an important part of communication. Phonological awareness, i.e. the ability to recognise the sound units of language and to manipulate them, has been found to be crucial in literacy acquisition.</p><p>In 2005 the development of a communication device, a talking joystick called the PhonicStick, started at The School of Computing at the University of Dundee in Scotland. The main focus with the project was to help children with physical disabilities to create spoken words by blending sounds together on the PhonicStick. It was also hypothesized that the PhonicStick could act as a support to literacy learning with typically developing children.</p><p>The aim of the present study was to investigate if a group of 10 typically developing South African 5-6 year old children could learn how to use the PhonicStick in three sessions and to see if their phonological awareness improved by using it. The training with the PhonicStick took place over a period of three weeks. The participants’ phonological awareness was screened before and after the sessions with two sub-tests of The Phonological Awareness Test (PHAT). In addition, their ability to produce sounds and words with the PhonicStick was tested.</p><p>The results showed that all the participants appeared to be interested in the PhonicStick and that they found it relatively easy to manoeuvre.
