Structures prédicatives nominales en Anglais : acquisition de données lexicales pour l'analyse automatique de textes / Nominal Predicate Structures in English : lexical data acquisition for automatic parsing texts

Dans cette thèse, nous nous intéressons aux relations qui peuvent exister entre des prédicats verbaux(ex : to regulate) et des prédicats nominaux (ex : regulation) dont les structures argumentales mettent enjeu des informations communes. Nous nous livrons à une formalisation des conditions dans lesquelles se réalisent des relations d’équivalence entre les constructions verbales et nominales. La mise en évidence de l’équivalence des structures argumentales de ces deux types de constructions est fondamentale pour pouvoir réaliser, par exemple, des systèmes d’extraction automatique d’informations très performants. En se basant sur les données du lexique The Specialist Lexicon, nous proposons une prédiction raisonnable du comportement syntaxique des arguments nominaux, de différents groupes nominaux prédicatifs(GNpréd), lorsqu’ils sont en position de postmodifieur. Cette étude nous a conduit à concevoir un ensemble d’algorithmes et à développer une plate-forme, Predicate DB, qui nous a permis de produire un lexique de nominalisations. Pour chaque entrée appartenant à ce lexique, nous avons caractérisé ses structures argumentales et ses réalisations dans des GNpréd dont les arguments sont marqués par des prépositions spécifiques. / In this thesis, we focus on the relation that may exist between verbal predicates (e.g., regulate)and nominal predicates (e.g., regulation) whose argument structures involve common information.We make a formalization of the conditions in which equivalent relations between verbal and nominalconstructions are carried out. Bringing out the equivalence of argument structures between these twotypes of constructions is fundamental for achieving, for example, very efficient Information Extractionsystems. Based on data from the Specialist Lexicon, we propose a reasonable prediction of the syntacticbehavior of nominal arguments, which belong to different predicate noun phrases (PNPs), when theyare in postmodifier position. This study has led us to design a set of algorithms and develop a platform,PredicateDB, to produce a lexicon of nominalizations. For each entry belonging to this lexicon, we havedefined its argument structures and achievements in PNPs whose arguments are marked by specificprepositions.

After a short summary of the current situation, the report describes the main principles of the library-to-be followed by definitions of behaviour of each module that can be controlled using the library. Then this report describes techniques used in the implementation and platform specifics. In the conclusion there is an idea of the direction in which the development could continue.

Discrete survival models with flexible link functions for age at first marriage among woman in Swaziland

MSc (Statistics) / Department of Statistics / This study explores the use of exible link functions in discrete survival models through a simulation study and an application to the Swaziland Demographic and Health Survey (SDHS) data. The objective of the research study is to perform simulation exercises in order to compare the e ectiveness of di erent families of link functions and to construct a discrete multilevel survival model for age at rst marriage among women in Swaziland using a exible link function. The Pareto hazard model, Pregibon and Gosset families of link functions were considered in models with and without unobserved heterogeneity. The Pareto model where the family parameter is estimated from the data was found to outperform the other models, followed by the Pregibon and the Gosset family of link functions. The results from both simulation study and real data analysis of the SDHS data illustrated that, misspecication of the link function causes bias on the estimation of results. This demonstrates the importance of choosing the right link. The ndings of this study reveal that women who are highly educated, stay in the Manzini and Shiselweni region, those who reside in urban areas were more likely to marry later compared to their counterparts in Swaziland. The results also reveal that the proportion of early rst marriages is declining since the di erence among birth cohorts is found to be very high, with women of younger cohorts getting married later compared to older women. / NRF

Ein Vorteil von Mathcad<sup>®</sup> ist das übersichtliche Arbeitsblatt. Mathematische Gleichungen werden nicht als verwirrende Kette von Buchstaben und Zahlen dargestellt, sondern in eindeutiger mathematischer Notation. Die Gleichungen werden standardmäßig nach der Eingabe auf Plausibilität geprüft. Viele Funktionen - auch komplexe Lösungsalgorithmen - werden bereits mitgeliefert. Weiterhin können formatierte Textfelder für eine gute Dokumentation genutzt werden, z.B. für Berechnungsnachweise. Daher kann das Arbeitsblatt in sehr kurzer Zeit entwickelt werden und ist für neue Anwender leicht nachzuvollziehen. Jedoch wird jeder Vorteil durch einen Nachteil erkauft. So liegen eine geringere Rechengeschwindigkeit, eingeschränkter Codeschutz und nur wenige Möglichkeiten zur Kommunikation mit anderen Programmen vor. Diese Nachteile können durch dynamische Bibliotheken verringert werden. Dieser Artikel stellt die Vorteile der DLL-Programmierung für Mathcad<sup>®</sup> dar und zeigt einige Beispiele zur Erhöhung der Rechengeschwindigkeit, zum Quellcodeschutz und zur Codeportierung. / One advantage of Mathcad<sup>®</sup> is the well arranged worksheet. Mathematic equations are not displayed in confusing chains of characters but in clear mathematical notation. The equations normaly are checked of plausibility including units after writing. Many functions - even complex solving algorithms - are already defined. Furthermore formatted comments lead to a good documentation, e.g. for calculation reports. Hence the calculation sheets are developed in a very short time and they are easy to comprehend for new users. However every advantage is bought by a disadvantage. Therefore there is a less calculation speed, limited possibilities for code protection and only few possibilities of communication with other programs. These disadvantages can be removed by using dynamic link libraries (DLL's). This article gives an introduction of programming DLL's in Mathcad<sup>®</sup> and shows some examples to increase calculation efficiency, code protection and code transfer.

[pt] Em redes sem fio, o desvanecimento do sinal causado pela propagação por caminhos múltiplos pode ser mitigado através do uso de diversidade cooperativa [1–3]. Neste contexto, esquemas de seleção de repetidores são essenciais por causa de seu alto desempenho [4–6]. Esta tese é focada no desenvolvimento de técnicas de seleção de repetidores, que utilizam buffers. Como primeira contribuição, apresentamos uma estrutura de chaveamento para sistemas de repetidores MIMO em que um nó de origem pode transmitir diretamente para um nó de destino ou auxiliado por repetidores. Em particular, apresentamos uma nova técnica de seleção de repetidores baseada no chaveamento e seleção do melhor canal, denominada Switched Max-Link, que faz uso do critério de seleção Maximum Minimum Distance (MMD). Como segunda contribuição, apresentamos uma estratégia de seleção de repetidores para sistemas cooperativos de múltiplas antenas que são auxiliados por um nó processador central, em que um cluster formado por dois usuários é selecionado para transmitir simultaneamente um ao outro com a ajuda de repetidores. Em particular, apresentamos uma nova estratégia de seleção de repetidores Multi-Way com base na seleção do melhor link, explorando o uso de buffers e codificação de rede em camada física (PLNC), denominada Multi-Way Buffer-Aided Max-Link (MW-Max-Link). Como terceira contribuição, apresentamos uma estrutura de uplink dirigida por nuvem para sistemas de repetidores Multi-Way de múltiplas antenas, que ajuda na detecção conjunta de símbolos na nuvem, onde os usuários são selecionados para transmitir simultaneamente uns aos outros auxiliados por repetidores. É realizada uma análise das técnicas propostas e existentes em termos de custo computacional, probabilidade de erro de pareamento, soma das taxas e atraso médio e simulações são empregadas para avaliar o desempenho dessas técnicas. / [en] In wireless networks, signal fading caused by multipath propagation can be mitigated through the use of cooperative diversity [1–3]. In this context, relay selection schemes are key because of their high performance [4–6]. Thus, this thesis is focused on developing relay selection techniques, that uses buffers. In this work, as a first contribution, we present a switched relaying framework for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) relay systems where a source node may transmit directly to a destination node or aided by relays equipped with buffers. In particular, we develop a novel relay selection protocol based on switching and the selection of the best link, denoted as Switched Max-Link, that uses the novel Maximum Minimum Distance (MMD) relay selection criterion. After that, as a second contribution, we present a relay-selection strategy for multi-way cooperative multi-antenna systems that are aided by a central processor node, where a cluster formed by two users is selected to simultaneously transmit to each other with the help of relays. In particular, we present a novel multi-way relay selection strategy based on the selection of the best link, exploiting the use of buffers and physical-layer network coding (PLNC), that is called Multi-Way Buffer-Aided Max-Link (MW-Max-Link). Moreover, as a third contribution, we present a cloud-driven uplink framework for multi-way multiple-antenna relay systems which aids joint symbol detection in the cloud and where users are selected to simultaneously transmit to each other aided by relays. In particular, we develop a novel multi-way relay selection protocol based on the selection of the best link, exploiting the use of cloud buffers and PLNC, denoted as Multi-Way Cloud- Driven Best-User-Link (MWC-Best-User-Link). An analysis of the proposed and existing techniques in terms of computational cost, pairwise error probability, sum-rate and average delay is carried out. Simulations are then employed to evaluate the performance of these techniques.

Static compensators (STATCOM) based on high-power converters are widely used for utilitiesand industrial applications in order to enhance the power system reliability. Nowadays,the Chain-Link Modular Multilevel Converter is the best solution for such applications,providing high eciency and reliability, and good harmonic performance. However, thecurrent delta and wye congurations present diculties in controlling negative sequencein unbalanced networks, as well as high capacitance requirements, which results in bulkySTATCOMs.This thesis aims to analyse a new Chain-Link Modular Multilevel Converter for STATCOMapplications. The main feature of the proposed topology is the presence of a commondc-link that will allow the exchange of energy between phases, facilitating the compensationof negative sequence components. Consequently, the required zero sequence componentinjection for the current Chain-Link congurations are avoided, and thus, also theconsequent over-sizing of the converter. Moreover, it is expected to have lower capacitancerequirements, because of the elimination of the second order harmonic (100 Hz)component in most of the capacitors, as they are charged and discharged by a bi-phasecurrent instead of a single-phase one. Additionally, lower conduction losses are expectedby reducing the number of devices in the conduction path.The layout and operation of the new converter have been analysed in this thesis.A STATCOM Simulink model provided by ABB has been modied to satisfy the newtopology. The theoretical benets of the proposed converter are supported by dierentsimulations carried out in Matlab-Simulink. In particular, it is shown a 50 % of negativesequence capability without any zero sequence component injection. The total capacitanceof the converter can be reduced a 30 % in comparison with the delta Chain-LinkModular Multilevel Converter, which is the preferable topology in the market nowadays.Furthermore, the losses are kept quite low if SiC semiconductors are used.On the other hand, the proposed topology requires the usage of bi-directional switchesto do the commutation and allow the exchange of energy between phases. An in-depthanalysis of the commutation process is shown at the end of this thesis, concluding that BidirectionalControlled Thyristors would be a promising solution for this converter topology. / Reaktiv effektkompensering (STATCOM) baserade på högeffektomvandlare används vidaför samhällsservice och industriella användningar för att förbättra elsystemet pålitliga.Nuförtiden, Chain-Link Modular Multilevel Converter är den bästa lösningen för sådanaanvändningar, vilket ger hög verkningsgrad och mycket pålitliga, samt låg harmonisk distortion.Hursomhelst, den nuvarande delta och wye konfigurationer presentera svårigheteratt kontrollera negativ sekvens i obalanserade nätverk, vilket leder till överdimensioneringav omvandlaren. A Web Scraper For Forums : Navigation and text extraction methods

Web forums are a popular way of exchanging information and discussing various topics. These websites usually have a special structure, divided into boards, threads and posts. Although the structure might be consistent across forums, the layout of each forum is different. The way a web forum presents the user posts is also very different from how a news website presents a single piece of information. All of this makes the navigation and extraction of text a hard task for web scrapers. The focus of this thesis is the development of a web scraper specialized in forums. Three different methods for text extraction are implemented and tested before choosing the most appropriate method for the task. The methods are Word Count, Text-Detection Framework and Text-to-Tag Ratio. The handling of link duplicates is also considered and solved by implementing a multi-layer bloom filter. The thesis is conducted applying a qualitative methodology. The results indicate that the Text-to-Tag Ratio has the best overall performance and gives the most desirable result in web forums. Thus, this was the selected methods to keep on the final version of the web scraper. / Webforum är ett populärt sätt att utbyta information och diskutera olika ämnen. Dessa webbplatser har vanligtvis en särskild struktur, uppdelad i startsida, trådar och inlägg. Även om strukturen kan vara konsekvent bland olika forum är layouten av varje forum annorlunda. Det sätt på vilket ett webbforum presenterar användarinläggen är också väldigt annorlunda än hur en nyhet webbplats presenterar en enda informationsinlägg. Allt detta gör navigering och extrahering av text en svår uppgift för webbskrapor. Fokuset av detta examensarbete är utvecklingen av en webbskrapa specialiserad på forum. Tre olika metoder för textutvinning implementeras och testas innan man väljer den lämpligaste metoden för uppgiften. Metoderna är Word Count, Text Detection Framework och Text-to-Tag Ratio. Hanteringen av länk dubbleringar noga övervägd och löses genom att implementera ett flerlagers bloom filter. Examensarbetet genomförs med tillämpning av en kvalitativ metodik. Resultaten indikerar att Text-to-Tag Ratio har den bästa övergripande prestandan och ger det mest önskvärda resultatet i webbforum. Således var detta den valda metoden att behålla i den slutliga versionen av webbskrapan.

Development of an antenna system for a relay-based wireless network

The proliferation of modern wireless networks increases demand for high capacity and throughput in order to provide faster, more robust, efficient and broadband services to end users. Mobile WiMAX and LTE are examples of such networks in which for some cases they have exposed limited connectivity due to harsh environment. Relay stations are preferred to overcome problems of weak or no access for such network devices, that are placed in specific positions to maintain high quality of data transfer at low cost and provide the required connectivity anywhere anytime. These stations should be equipped with an antenna system capable of establishing communication between base station (backhaul link) and end users (access link). This thesis focuses on the design and development of a new antenna system that is suitable for a relay-based wireless network. Planar geometries of microstrip patch antennas are utilized. The antenna system comprises two antenna modules: a new design of a single antenna for access link and a new design of an antenna array for backhaul link realization. Both antenna specifications are compatible with the IEEE802.16j protocol standard. Hence, relay station should be capable of pointing its radiation pattern to the base station antenna, thus to achieve the desired radiation pattern of the relay station, a new beam-forming module is proposed, designed and developed to generate the proper radiation pattern. The beam-forming module incorporating digital phase shifters and attenuator chips is fabricated and tested. The optimization process using the Least Mean Square (LMS) algorithm is considered in this study to assign the proper phase and amplitude that is necessary to each radiation element excitation current, to produce the desired steered radiation pattern. A comprehensive study on the coupling effects for several relative positions between two new backhaul and access link antenna elements is performed. Two new antenna configurations for coupling reduction are tested and the simulated and measured results in terms of antenna radiation performances were compared and commented.
