Beginning Female Therapists' Experiences of Applying Theory into Their Practice

Although there is an extensive amount of literature on the developmental stages of beginning therapists and the challenges they face, little is known about one of their most difficult challenges; transferring theory learned in class to their practice. This study is a qualitative look at how beginning therapists learn to apply theory to their practice. Ten students who were beginning therapists with at least 75 hours of client contact hours were interviewed from four different universities with accredited marriage and family therapy programs. The study was conducted using a phenomenological perspective to explore how beginning therapists begin to apply theory to their practice. Using the constant comparison method of analysis, five major themes emerged from the interviews as well as a general developmental process that help to describe how beginning therapists apply theory to their practice. The main themes found include before seeing clients, early process of theory application, what was helpful, later process of theory application and a reflection of that process. Implications for beginning therapists and training programs as well as future research are indicated. / Master of Science

Credit Risk from Theory to Application

<p> In this thesis, we calibrated a one factor CIR model for interest rate and a two factor CIR model for each hazard rate of 21 firms. The time series of the interest rate and each hazard rate for 21 firms are also obtained. Extended Kalman Filter and Quasi-Maximum Likelihood Estimation are used as the numerical scheme. The empirical results suggest that multifactor CIR models are not better than multifactor Hull-White model. Positive correlations between hazard rate and interest rate are discovered, although most hazard rates are found to be negatively correlated with the default-free interest rate. The 21 filtered time series of the hazard rates suggest that there maybe a hidden common factor shared only by the intensities. Monte Carlo Simulation is conducted both for interest rate and hazard rates. The simulation indicate that both the SKF and the EKF work pretty well as a filter tool but may produce bad estimation for the value of the likelihood function. QMLE works fine in linear state space form model, but it does a poor job in the case of non-linear state space form.</p> / Thesis / Master of Science (MSc)

Wertewandel ist ein bestimmender Faktor unserer Generation. Er durchdringt alle Bereiche des sozialen Miteinanders und macht auch vor den Subsystemen unserer Gesellschaft nicht halt. Der Wertewandel in den funktionellen Subsystemen der Wirtschaft ging dabei stets mit dem Begriff der Organisationsentwicklung einher. Diese ist jedoch nur in der Lage Teilaspekte des Wandels abzudecken, für eine ganzheitliche Betrachtung mangelte es bisher an einer theoretischen Unterstützung. Dieser Beitrag rückt daher das systemische Change Management in das Zentrum der Betrachtung. Neben seiner integrativen Ausrichtung zeichnet es sich vor allem durch eine normative Fundierung aus. Es soll anhand eines konkreten Beispiels aufzeigt werden, wie das systemische Change Management strukturiert ist und welche Wirkungsmechanismen es in einem organisationalen Wandlungsprozess entwickeln kann.

Effects of Behavioral Decision-Making in Game-theoretic Frameworks for Security Resource Allocation in Networked Systems

<p>Facing increasingly sophisticated attacks from external adversaries, interdependent systems owners have to judiciously allocate their (often limited) security budget in order to reduce their cyber risks. However, when modeling human decision-making, behavioral economics has shown that humans consistently deviate from classical models of decision-making. Most notably, prospect theory, for which Kahneman won the 2002 Nobel memorial prize in economics, argues that humans perceive gains, losses and probabilities in a skewed manner. While there is a rich literature on prospect theory in economics and psychology, most of the existing work studying the security of interdependent systems does not take into account the aforementioned biases.</p> <p><br></p> <p>In this thesis, we propose novel mathematical behavioral security game models for the study of human decision-making in interdependent systems modeled by directed attack graphs. We show that behavioral biases lead to suboptimal resource allocation patterns. We also analyze the outcomes of protecting multiple isolated assets with heterogeneous valuations via decision- and game-theoretic frameworks, including simultaneous and sequential games. We show that behavioral defenders over-invest in higher-valued assets compared to rational defenders. We then propose different learning-based techniques and adapt two different tax-based mechanisms for guiding behavioral decision-makers towards optimal security investment decisions. In particular, we show the outcomes of such learning and mechanisms on four realistic interdependent systems. In total, our research establishes rigorous frameworks to analyze the security of both large-scale interdependent systems and heterogeneous isolated assets managed by human decision makers, and provides new and important insights into security vulnerabilities that arise in such settings.  </p>
