In this paper, processing effects of electroplating and post- plating annealing on via extrusion are investigated. The study is based on two TSV structures with identical geometry but different processing conditions. Via extrusion, stress and material behaviors of the TSV structures were first compared. Electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) and time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectroscopy (TOF-SIMS) were used to characterize the microstructure of TSVs and the additives incorporated during electroplating. Based on the results, processing effects on via extrusion and its mechanism are discussed, including grain growth, local plasticity, and diffusional creep.

NUMERICAL STUDY OF FLUID FLOW AND SOLIDIFICATION IN THE PRIMARY COOLING ZONE OF A CONTINUOUS CASTER

<p> Continuous Casting (CC) is an essential process in the steel industry to transform molten steel into solid product. This process begins with primary cooling (PC) where the molten steel is cooled, and the initial solidification begins. It is important to monitor the process of PC as defects such as thinning of the shell in the mold can lead to breakouts. Key parameters in PC are the mold design, casting condition, and steel composition. In the research conducted, key parameters for PC are investigated to analyze the impact on flow formation and solidification. To optimize mold design, angular taper to the narrow face can be employed to accommodate for any shell shrinkage. Utilizing computational fluid dynamics, a range of mold taper is simulated per the developed solidification model with defined temperature-dependent material properties. When simulated without a taper, significant air gap formation in the corners of the mold is visible due to thermal shrinkage of the shell. This air gap decreases the cooling rate due to the shell’s lack of contact with the cooling mold wall. A parametric study of mold taper ranging from no taper to 3° as well as change in casting conditions, superheat and casting speed, are conducted to analyze the impact of taper with respect to the casting conditions. Per the conditions applied, angular taper between 1° and 2° resulted into reduction of undercooling and overcooling in the corner of the mold which is subjected to cooling from the broad face and narrow face of the cool mold wall. The turbulent flow in the mold region was found to drastically influences the quality of steel produced during continuous casting. The flow itself can lead to surface defects or slag entrainment based on the formation. A high surface wave due to turbulence of the injected melt lead to fluctuations and the instability compromised the quality of the steel produced as well as entrained the slag. To regulate the flow, electromagnetic forces can be applied in the mold, dampening the local turbulent flow. As the electrically conductive molten steel interacts with the induced magnetic field, it reduced the velocity of the steel jet released from the ports of the submerged entry nozzle. Per the simulation-based study conducted increasing the EMBr strength from 2975G to 4350G reduced the peak surface wave height by 59.47% and volume of flux rate of decrease by 4.25%. Additionally, increasing the SEN depth from 110 mm to 350 mm increased the average wave height by 19% and volume of flux rate of decrease by 2.6%. Lastly, increasing the mold width from 1.067 m to 1.50m increased average wave height by 8.71% and volume of flux rate of decrease by 0.9%. </p>

Modélisation thermomécanique de la paroi des greniers de stockage de céréales en banco / Thermo-mechanical modeling of banco grain silo

Le stockage des céréales se fait en milieu rural au nord du Bénin dans des greniers (silo) en terre qui ont une contenance limitée. Les nombreuses tentatives d’introduction de magasins modernes ont essuyé le rejet des populations. Le présent travail a pour but d’étudier la possibilité d’augmenter le volume de stockage du grenier de type Yom sans changer ni sa forme architecturale, ni le composite argile-paille-décoction de néré. La caractérisation expérimentale du comportement mécanique du banco, matériau de construction de ces greniers a permis de définir le meilleur dosage pour des caractéristiques maximales. En faisant varier la proportion de paille et de décoction de néré, l’influence sur la terre crue de la paille et de la décoction est mise en évidence. La simulation de l’action des grains, à la vidange et au remplissage sur la paroi du grenier et l’analyse des déformations induites montrent qu’il y a possibilité de construire des greniers de plus grande taille. Une optimisation paramétrique des dimensions a été faite. L'effet des échauffements successifs sur la paroi du grenier a été pris en compte à travers la modélisation des transferts thermiques. La modélisation des profils de température dans diverses coupes orientées du silo montre que le flux est bien amorti et les conditions d'ambiance dans le grenier garantissent une bonne conservation. Il est donc possible de construire des greniers de grande capacité de stockage qui serviraient de greniers communautaires ou banques de céréales à disposition des coopératives villageoises. Cette solution règlerait le problème de l’insécurité alimentaire au niveau du monde rural / The storage of cereals is done in rural areas in northern Benin in earth silo that have a limited capacity. The numerous attempts to introduce modern shops have been rejected by the population. This work aims to study the possibility of increasing the storage volume of Yom type silo without changing its architectural form, nor the clay-straw-nere composite. The experimental characterization of the mechanical behaviour of the banco, the construction material of these silo made it possible to define the best dosage for maximum characteristics. By varying the proportion of straw and decoction of nere, the influence on the raw earth of the straw and the decoction is highlighted. The simulation of grain action (filling and discharging) on the silo wall and the analysis of the induced deformations shows that there is a possibility of building larger earth silo. A parametric optimization of the dimensions was made. The effect of successive heating on the silo wall has been considered by modelling heat transfer. The modelling of the temperature profiles in various silo-oriented sections shows that the flow is well damped and the ambient conditions in the attic guarantee good conservation. It is therefore possible to build earth silo with large storage capacity that could be used as community silo or cereal banks for village cooperatives. This solution would solve the problem of food insecurity in rural areas

Determining thermal stress during the transport of mammals

Student Number: 0218322F Master of Science School of Physiology / The high morbidity and mortality of wild mammals and livestock during capture and transport is generally ascribed to thermal stress. Consequently, capture operators can benefit from improved methods that may reduce thermal stress. The aim of my study was to develop a practical method of measuring the body temperature of mammals during capture and transport operations. Firstly, I determined whether intermittent temperature recordings, which allow for minuteby- minute monitoring of an animal’s temperature, could accurately reflect continuous measures of an animal’s rectal temperature. Intermittent temperatures were measured via telemetry while continuous and off-line recordings were measured with data loggers. Secondly, I compared rectal and abdominal temperatures to determine if rectal temperature can provide a practical, noninvasive method of estimating core body temperature. Additionally, I measured body temperature and environmental conditions throughout transportation and compared pre- and post-transport levels of faecal cortisol, and blood cortisol, haematocrit and catecholamines. Measuring rectal temperatures seems to be the only feasible, non-invasive technique to obtain temperature during transport operations. However, rectal temperature records required about 30 minutes to stabilise after inserting a thermometric device. After rectal temperature stabilised, generally the difference between abdominal and rectal temperatures varied greatly for individual animals, while the average differences in temperatures between the body sites were not significant for all, except one, species. I have also shown that telemeters and data loggers can be used interchangeably to measure the body temperature of animals. The differences between temperatures measured by the devices were not significant, except for substantial differences shown in two animals. The addition of earphones and a large aerial inside the vehicle improved the telemetry results, by limiting the extraneous noise of the capture and transport environment. These conditions probably caused the anomalous readings in the two animals. General thermal responses to stress are that animals showed a peak in temperature due to capture and a decrease in temperature during transport. Therefore, capture-related stress and the likelihood of animals dying during capture could be minimised by ensuring that the animals are not chased longer than a set cut-off time. Further, globe temperature should be monitored to ensure that animals are not captured in high thermal conditions. In contradiction with the current guidelines regarding the appropriate time of day for capture, I recommend that animals should not be caught at the end of the day, as my results show that this is when their body temperatures are the highest. Body temperatures during transport and differences in faeces cortisol before and after transport seem to indicate that animals adapt to repeated stress events.

"Avaliação da retenção de coroas metálicas fundidas em função dos tipos de agentes cimentantes e das ciclagens térmica e mecânica" / Evaluation of cast crowns’ retention with two different lutting agents after thermocycling and mechanical load

Nesta pesquisa, foram avaliados a retenção de coroas cimentadas sobre dentes terceiros molares humanos extraídos, após submetê-los às ciclagens térmica e mecânica, e o tipo de falha dos cimentos. Vinte dentes foram preparados de maneira padronizada, com 4 mm de altura, 8 mm de diâmetro e 20º de expulsividade. Coroas metálicas fundidas em NiCr foram cimentadas sobre os preparos, sendo dez com cimento de fosfato de zinco e dez com cimento resinoso, e armazenadas em água a 37ºC por 24 horas. Aleatoriamente, a metade das amostras de ambos os cimentos foi submetida a termociclagem (5ºC e 55ºC ±1ºC por 700 ciclos), seguida de ensaios mecânicos (freqüência de 2 Hz, carga compressiva de 141N por 200.000 ciclos). A outra metade das amostras (grupo controle) não foi submetida aos testes de fadiga. Realizou-se o teste de tração e os valores obtidos foram tratados estatisticamente pelo teste ANOVA (Tukey-Kramer Multiple Comparisons Test). Os resultados mostraram retenção significativamente superior do cimento resinoso Panavia F (valor médio 569,43 N) sobre o cimento de fosfato de zinco (valor médio 350 N). Os testes de envelhecimentos mostraram-se significantes (p<0,001) na sua influência sobre a retenção das coroas, exceto para o grupo cimentado com fosfato de zinco (p>0,05). A falha do cimento observada foi de natureza adesiva para todos os grupos. / The aim of this study was to evaluate the retention of NiCr cast metal crowns fixed with two different lutting agents after thermocycling and mechanical load. The nature of the cement failure was evaluated too. Twenty natural human molar teeth extracted were selected (Banco de Dentes Permanentes Humanos da Faculdade de Odontologia da Universidade de São Paulo – SP). They were prepared at 4mm height, 8mm diameter and 20º of convergence. The cast crowns were lutted with zinc phosphate cement (n=10) and resin cement (n=10) and stored in water at 37ºC for 24 hours. Randomly the half of the specimens of each cement were thermal (5ºC and 55ºC for 700 cycles) and load cycled (2 Hz, 141 N load for 200.000 cycles). The control group did not perform the thermal or fatigue tests. The pull-out test was performed and the results showed a significant (confidence interval 95%) superior retentive strength for Panavia F resin cement (mean value 569,43 N) when compared with zinc phosphate (mean value 350 N). The aging tests were significant (p<0,001) about their influence over the retention of the crowns. They was no significant difference between control and cycled group for crowns lutted with phosphate cement (p>0,05). Adhesive failure of the cements was observed for all subjects.

Failure Analysis of the World Trade Center 5 Building

This project involves a failure analysis of the internal structural collapse that occurred in World Trade Center 5 (WTC 5) due to fire exposure alone on September 11, 2001. It is hypothesized that the steel column-tree assembly failed during the heating phase of the fire. The results of this research have serious and far-reaching implications, for this method of construction is utilized in approximately 20,000 existing buildings and continues to be very popular. Catastrophic failure during the heating phase of a fire would endanger the lives of firefighters and building occupants undergoing extended egress times (e.g., high-rise buildings), or relying upon defend-in-place strategies (e.g., hospitals). Computer software was used to reconstruct the fire event and predict the structural performance of the assembly when exposed to the fire. Results from a finite element, thermal-stress model confirms this hypothesis, for it is concluded that the catastrophic, progressive structural collapse occurred approximately 2 hours into the fire exposure.

Interação animal-ambiente: efeito do ambiente climático sobre as respostas fisiológicas e produtivas de vacas Holandesas em free-stall / Animal-environment interaction: effects of climatic environment over physiologic and productive responses of Holstein cows in free-stall

As relações entre os fatores climáticos e as respostas fisiológicas de vacas lactantes são bastante conhecidas, porém sob condições de ambiente controlado. Este estudo teve como objetivo monitorar as respostas dos animais em instalações típicas para vacas leiteiras, para identificar o real impacto do ambiente climático sobre o animal. Foi proposto um método para avaliar o nível de estresse de vacas, que poderá servir como uma ferramenta simples, que traduza as sensações de conforto térmico dos animais. O experimento foi realizado em três fases, a saber: primavera (28 dias), verão (31 dias) e inverno (31 dias). Foram utilizados animais da raça Holandesa com produção média entre 20 a 25 kg leite/dia. Os animais foram alojados em instalação tipo free-stall com acesso livre a um piquete adjacente. Foram avaliadas a freqüência respiratória (FR), a temperatura retal (TR), a temperatura do pelame (TPE), a temperatura auricular (TAU), a temperatura da base da cauda (TCAU), a temperatura da vulva (TVU) e a produção de leite (PL). O ambiente foi monitorado 24 horas por dia, todos os dias, com registros da temperatura de bulbo seco (TBS), da umidade relativa (UR), da temperatura de ponto de orvalho e da temperatura de globo negro (TG). Posteriormente foram calculados os índices de temperatura e umidade (ITU) e o de temperatura de globo e umidade (ITGU). Todas as variáveis fisiológicas apresentaram padrão sazonal bem claro, com maiores valores durante as estações mais quentes (primavera e verão) e menores valores no inverno. A TAU, a TVU e a TCAU apresentaram correlações positivas com a TR, a FR e a TPE, o que indica uma associação entre estas variáveis. Porém estudos adicionais devem ser conduzidos para validar a aplicabilidade destas variáveis (TAU, TVU e TCAU) na caracterização do estresse térmico dos animais. A TPE e a FR foram as variáveis mais influenciadas pelo ambiente climático em todas as estações do ano. O ambiente noturno foi associado às variações da TR, da FR e da TPE, enquanto o ambiente do dia anterior não explicou a variação das respostas fisiológicas. Não houve evidência de efeitos de uma variável ambiental isolada sobre as variáveis fisiológicas, o que indicou a complexidade das relações entre o animal e o ambiente climático. Mesmo com ITU acima de 79, considerado estressante pela literatura estrangeira para vacas lactantes, não foram evidenciados valores estressantes para TR e FR e reduções na produção de leite. O modelo proposto neste trabalho para estimar presença ou ausência de estresse em vacas alojadas em free-stall, apresentou boa aderência ao conjunto de dados, com R&sup2; de 0,43. Dessa forma, disponibiliza uma ferramenta simples e rápida para produtores e técnicos, pela associação de duas medidas fisiológicas (FR e TPE) de fácil mensuração, ou então pela associação de duas variáveis ambientais (TBS e UR). Tal ferramenta diz respeito a uma amostra da população de vacas Holandesas alojadas em determinada instalação e região, o que condiciona o modelo proposto a outros estudos para sua validação em outros rebanhos e regiões. / It has been well known the relation between the environment and physiological answers of lactating dairy cows under controlled environmental conditions. The present study aimed to monitor the animal answers allocated at typical housing system to identify the real environmental impact over it. A method was proposed to evaluate the stress level of the animal, to be used as a tool to identify the sensations of thermal comfort. The experiment was conducted in three phases, in spring (28 days), summer (31 days) and winter (31 days) periods. Holstein dairy cows were used averaging milk yield around 20 to 25 kg/day. The animals were housed in a free stall shed with an open area. Respiratory rate (FR), rectal temperature (TR), surface skin temperature (TPE), internal ear temperature (TAU), tail temperature (TCAU), vulva temperature (TVU) and milk yield (PL) were evaluated. The environmental conditions were monitored during 24 hours every day, by recording the dry bulb temperature (TBS), relative humidity (UR), dew point temperature (Tpo) and black globe temperature (Tg). The calculation of temperature humidity index (ITU) and the black globe humidity index (ITGU) was based on these environmental variables. The physiological variables had a seasonal standard with higher values during hot periods (spring and summer) and lower values during the winter. The IET, VT and TT demonstrated positive correlations with RT, RR and SKT showing association between them. More studies are necessary to validate the applicability of these variables (IET, VT and TT) and to characterize heat stress in dairy cows. SKT and RR were the most influenced by the environment in all seasons. The night environment was associated to the RT, RR and SKT, while the day before environment did not explained the physiological variations. There was no evidence of isolated environmental variables over the physiological ones, showing the complexity between the animal and the environment. Even with the THI values above 79, what is considered stressful to dairy cows, there was no evidence of stressful values for RT and RR and of MY losses. The model proposed in this study to estimate presence or absence of heat stress in dairy cows avails a simple and fast tool to milk producers and technicians, where it could be associated two physiological variables (RR and SKT) of easy measurement or other two environment variables (DBT and RH). However, this result is related to the studied population at a specific housing system and situated at a specific region. Addiitonal studies must be conducted to validate the proposed model to others dairy herds and locations.

Un grand nombre de systèmes thermomécaniques industriels se trouve confronté à des régimes transitoires plus ou moins rapides suivant la fréquence de fonctionnement. L'amélioration de leurs performances nécessite l'utilisation de nouvelles structures du type multimatériaux ou barrière thermique. En effet, ces matériaux peuvent être de type multicouche en associant plusieurs couches rangées de façon à améliorer le comportement mécanique et thermique d’un système ou alors constitués d’un substrat revêtu d’une succession de couches minces obtenues par projection thermique par exemple.Dans un système donné, ces matériaux subissent généralement des sollicitations cycliques qui peuvent être d’origine thermique et/ou mécanique. Il est donc nécessaire de mieux connaître leur comportement thermomécanique en régimes élastique et plastique. Ainsi, l'étude présentée dans ce travail, limitée ici à des conditions périodiques uniquement d’origine thermique, traite de l'évolution de l'endommagement d'un matériau sous une ou plusieurs formes de fatigue thermique.L'origine de la sollicitation imposée provient d'une condition de flux périodique (sous forme d’échelon, de triangle ou de sinus) prenant en compte les pertes par convection. Sur le plan mécanique, le matériau est supposé fixe sur l’une de ses deux extrémités et libre de se déformer sur l’autre. Les contraintes et les déformations mécaniques dans le matériau proviennent essentiellement des différences des coefficients de dilatation thermique et des gradients de température dans le matériau. La nature variable et transitoire du comportement thermique du matériau permet de suivre l’évolution de la distribution des contraintes et des déformations au sein du matériau.L’étude de son endommagement est menée selon les cas, soit sur des modèles établis directement à partir du comportement thermo élastique soit sur des modèles nécessitant l’étude thermo-élastoplastique. Dans les deux cas, comme la plupart des modèles d’endommagement (Lemaître et Chaboche) rencontrés dans la littérature ne sont valides que sur des matériaux uniformes et homogènes, une recherche de matériau équivalent du multi-matériau étudié était nécessaire. L’équivalence entre le matériau réel et le matériau équivalent repose sur un critère d’équivalence thermique. Les modèles étudiés fournissent dans les deux cas, l'évolution de l'endommagement du matériau, en fonction des paramètres géométriques et aussi de la forme des sollicitations thermiques imposées telles que le coefficient d'échange par convection, l’amplitude et la période du flux imposé.Une application de ces modèles sur un exemple de moteur à combustion interne est proposée à la fin de ce mémoire. Elle montre une prédiction du nombre de cycles (durée de vie) du cylindre moteur en fonction des conditions de fonctionnement utilisées. / A great number of industrial thermo-mechanical systems are facing today transitory regimes with different speeds according to the functioning frequencies. Enhancing their performance imposes the use of new materials of different types; multimaterials is a good example. In fact, these new materials may be constituted of different layers where the layers are associated together in a way to enhance the mechanical and thermal behavior of the system. They may be also constituted of a substrate dressed by a succession of slim layers obtained by thermal projection.In a given system, the constituting materials are generally subject to cyclic thermal or mechanical solicitations. It is very important to know at best their thermomechanical behavior in elastic and plastic regimes. Therefore, the study done during this thesis work, limited here uniquely to periodical solicitations resulting from thermal sources, deals with the evolution of the damage of these materials under multiple forms of thermal fatigue in plastic and elastic functioning regimes.The imposed solicitations are obtained from a periodical thermal source (rectangular, triangular and sinusoidal form). The thermal loss resulting from the convection is also considered. On the mechanical side, the material is considered fixed on one of its extremities and free on the other one (subject to strain). The mechanical stress and strain in the material come essentially from the differences between the coefficients of thermal dilation and the gradient of temperature in the material. The transitory and variable thermal behavior of the material permits to track the evolution and the distribution of the stress and strain in the material.The study of the damage is performed according the given case, either using models directly established from the thermomechanical elastic behavior, or using models that need a thermo-elastoplastic study. In the two cases, and because the majority of damage models (Lemaître and Chaboche) seen in the literature are valid and can be applied only to uniform and homogeneous materials, a research of an equivalent material to the studied multi-material was necessary. The equivalency between the real material and the equivalent one is based mainly on thermal equivalent criteria. The study provides in the two cases the damage evolution in the multimaterial function of the geometric parameters, depending on the form of the imposed thermal solicitations such as the heat transfer coefficient, the amplitude, the period and the shape of the imposed thermal flow.An application of these models to an internal combustion engine is proposed at the end of this thesis. It gives a prediction of the number of cycles (lifetime) of the cylinder of the engine depending on the used functioning conditions.

Investigation Of Low Temperature Cracking In Asphalt Concrete Pavement

In this study, low temperature cracking of asphalt concrete is investigated based on a laboratory experimental program including the design variables of aggregate type, gradation, asphalt content, binder grading, binder modification, and the experimental variables of cooling rate, and specimen size. The design of experiment is proposed according to the fractional factorial design principles to reduce the required number of test specimens. Mix designs are performed according to the Superpave mix design guidelines using materials obtained from the Turkish General Directorate of High-ways. In the course of this study, a test setup for thermal stress restrained specimen test for asphalt concrete is developed and used successfully to test a number of as-phalt concrete beam specimens. The same setup is also used for measuring the glass transition temperatures to obtain various thermo-volumetric properties of mixtures. Statistical methods are used to identify the effect of experimental variables on frac-ture strength, fracture temperature and other dependent variables obtained from the testing program. Statistical models are also developed to predict the fracture strength, fracture temperature and other thermo-volumetric properties of mixtures. Results of analyses show that aggregate type, binder modification, and asphalt content significantly affect both the fracture strength and fracture temperature of asphalt concrete. While the glass transition temperature is affected by only aggregate type, coefficients of contraction before and after the glass transition temperature are not influenced by any of the experimental variables. The results of this study provide an important basis to prevent low temperature cracking in asphalt concrete pavements.
