DEVELOPMENT, DESIGN, AND CONSTRUCTION OF A HUMAN-BUILDING INTERACTIONS LABORATORY

Sourabh Deepak Yadav (12224741) 20 April 2022 (has links)
<div>The evolution of existing building construction is envisioned as modular construction. Instead of on-site construction, buildings can be assembled on-site using prefabricated modular elements. These modular elements could integrate intelligent building technologies to enable autonomous, occupant responsive, scalable, cost-effective, and sustainable features. On-site assembly of modular construction elements would offer better quality control, decrease material waste and resources, with more predictable schedules. These building elements would allow more cost-effective integration of new intelligent sensors, adaptive interfaces, renewable energy and energy recovery technologies, comfort delivery, and resiliency technologies, making high-performance buildings more affordable. To explore and evaluate these modular and intelligent comfort delivery concepts and advanced approaches for interaction with occupants, a new Human-Building Interactions Laboratory (HBIL) has been designed and is under development. The facility has a modular construction layout with thermally active panels, and the interior surface temperature of each panel can be individually controlled using a hydronic system. Such configuration allows us to emulate different climate zones and building type conditions and perform studies such as the effect of different kinds of active building surfaces on thermal comfort, localized comfort delivery, and occupant comfort control. Moreover, each panel is reconfigurable to investigate different interior surface treatments for thermal, visual, and acoustic comfort conditions. <br></div><div>In this MS thesis work, the overall design approach of the facility is presented. Development, experimental investigation of thermal performance, and aligned design modifications of a prototype thermo-active wall panel are explained in detail. Detailed development of a 1-D transient numerical model for the prototype wall panel and its tuning and validation are also presented. Furthermore, the design and installation plan of the hydronic system for the HBIL facility are also presented with an initial commissioning plan.</div>

A modular synthesis of processable and thermally stable semi-fluorinated aryl ether polymers via step-growth polymerization of fluoroalkenes

Shelar, Ketki Eknath 13 May 2022 (has links)
Tailored fluoropolymers remain the leading choice for a wide variety of advanced high-performance applications, including electronic/optical and energy conversion, owing to their unique blend of complementary high-performance properties. Amorphous semi-fluorinated polymers exhibit improved solubility and melt processability when compared to traditional perfluoropolymers. A leading class of semi-fluorinated aryl ether polymers includes perfluorocyclobutyl (PFCB), perfluorocycloalkenyl (PFCA), and fluoroarylene vinylene ether (FAVE) polymers. Monomers containing aromatic trifluorovinyl ethers (TFVE) are used to synthesize PFCB polymers via radical-mediated [2+2] cyclodimerization. On the other hand, FAVE and PFCA polymers are polymerized via base-mediated nucleophilic addition/elimination of bisphenols with TFVE monomers and decafluorocyclohexene respectively. The use of different monomer cores (aromatic, aliphatic, contorted, and renewable) should help to develop general structure/property relationships for this versatile and expanding approach to semi-fluorinated aryl ether polymers. The enchainment of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) cores with functional fluorocarbon groups (or segments) recently afforded a new class of semi- fluorinated polymers in the continuing quest for novel organic materials for potential applications in optoelectronic, gas-separation, and advanced composites. Chapter 2 details the incorporation of commercially available acenaphthenequinone was achieved to afford PFCB aryl ether polymers with excellent solubility, high thermal stability, and film-forming capability. Chapter 3 represents base-promoted nucleophilic addition/elimination of commercial bisphenols with TFVE-triphenylene monomers affording FAVE aryl ether polymers possessing excellent solution processability, high thermal stability and photostability. In addition, triphenylene-enchained FAVE polymers exhibit extreme thermal-oxidative photostability and emit blue light after heating in air at 250 °C for 24 h. Further, time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) computations were performed to understand electronic polymer structures. In one case, post-polymerization Scholl coupling converted the central triphenylene core to afford a hexabenzocoronene containing semi-fluorinated polymer with new optoelectronic properties. Chapter 4 demonstrates synthesis and characterization of renewable semi-fluorinated polymers obtained using aliphatic diol isosorbide. This renewable diol readily polymerizes with bis-TFVE derivatives of bisphenol A and 6F to provide high molecular weight thermoplastics exhibiting excellent solubility and tough, transparent film-forming capability. Finally, Chapter 5 presents synthesis of TFVE enchained corannulene which gave blue-light emission and outstanding processability. Synthesis and characterization, including the new materials' optical, thermal, and electronic properties, is presented.

Thermo-responsive microcarriers based on poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)

Zhang, J.N., Cui, Z.F., Field, R., Moloney, M.G., Rimmer, Stephen, Ye, H. 2015 April 1917 (has links)
No / Microcarrier cell culture systems provide an attractive alternative to the conventional monolayer cell culture for cell amplification, due to their high surface area-to-volume ratio. Unlike enzymatic methods for removing cells from microcarriers after cell culture, which can lead to irreversible damage of the cells, microcarriers which release cells by temperature adjustment have been developed. This was achieved by grafting a temperature-responsive polymer, poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm), on the microcarrier surface. This review comprehensively presents various methods to prepare such thermo-responsive microcarriers based on PNIPAAm. These methods include the grafting-to technique, grafting-from technique, grafting-through technique, along with methods leading to PNIPAAm hydrogel beads, seeded polymerization, and non-covalent adsorption. The methods for controlling PNIPAAm grafting density, molecular weight and molecular architecture are also outlined. Further, the efficiency of cell attachment, proliferation and thermally-induced detachment of such thermo-responsive microcarriers is introduced and compared. / Tellurite glasses are considered powerful candidates for applications in lasers and nonlinear optics due to their important properties such as high refractive index, low phonon energy, relatively low glass transition temperature and easy glass production at room atmosphere. In this work glass samples of the systems ZnO-Na2O, TeO2-Nb2O5-Na2O and Te2O-Na2O were produced, including or not the AgNO3 doping for the structural and optical study purposes. The structural properties and the recombination mechanisms of these glasses were studied by means of the techniques of electron paramagnetic resonance, thermoluminescence and thermally stimulated depolarization currents. The optical properties such as the optical linear absorption coefficient, linear and nonlinear refractive index were studied by means of the optical absorption techniques, prism coupling and Z-scan. Further studies were developed on the precipitation of silver nanoparticles embedded in the glass system TeO2-ZnO-Na2O doped with AgNO3, by means of thermal treatments at different temperatures. The characterization of the metallic nanoparticles was carried out by optical absorption aided by transmission electron microscopy and dispersive energy spectroscopy. Four paramagnetic responses were observed by electron paramagnetic resonance of the -irradiated glasses, one not yet identified and the other three identified as g0, g1 and g3 attributed respectively to the tellurium-oxygen hole center, non-bridging oxygen hole center and tellurium electron center. A model to explain the formation mechanisms of these centers was proposed. The thermoluminescence results indicated that the recombination processes of these centers are non-radiative. This is the first study that deals with polarization and depolarization phenomena in tellurite glasses with and without gamma irradiation, by the technique of thermally stimulated depolarization currents. In what regards the optical properties of the glass systems TeO2-ZnONa2O and TeO2-Nb2O5-Na2O, the effect of the silver doping on the gap energy, Urbach tail, linear and nonlinear refractive indices were investigated. Through the Z-scan technique results of the glass system TeO2-Nb2O5-Na2O, an increasing asymmetry of the curve, with increasing AgNO3 content was observed. This phenomenon was explained through an adaptation of Sumi´s model for non-radiative processes, applied to a silver doped insulating glass, to explain the thermal character of the nonlinear refractive index. Finally, a model was developed to explain the silver nanoparticles precipitation in the TeO2-ZnO-Na2O glass matrix submitted to thermal treatment.

Computer simulation and theoretical prediction of thermally induced polarisation

Wirnsberger, Peter January 2018 (has links)
In this thesis, we study the phenomenon of thermally induced polarisation using a combination of theory and computer simulation. Molecules of sufficiently low symmetry exhibit thermo-molecular orientation when subjected to a temperature gradient, leading to considerable electrostatic fields in polar liquids. Here, we first use non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations to study this interesting effect numerically. To this end, we propose an integration algorithm to impose a constant heat flux in simulations and show that it greatly improves energy conservation compared to a previous algorithm. We next investigate the thermal polarisation of water and find that truncation of electrostatic interactions can lead to severe artefacts, such as the wrong sign of polarisation and an overestimation of the electric field. We further show that the quadrupole-moment contribution to the electric field is significant and responsible for an inversion of its sign. To facilitate the theoretical description of electrostatic interactions, we propose a new dipolar model fluid as a perturbation of a Stockmayer fluid. Using this modified Stockmayer model, we provide numerical evidence for the recently proposed phenomenon of thermally induced monopoles. We show that the electrostatic field generated by a pair of heated/cooled colloidal particles immersed in such a solvent can be trivially described by two Coulomb charges. Finally, we propose a mean-field theory to predict the thermo-polarisation effect exhibited by our model fluid theoretically, and demonstrate near quantitative agreement with simulation results.

Sea Breeze Circulation in the Auckland Region:Observational Data Analysis and NumericalModelling

Khan, Basit Ali January 2010 (has links)
The main aim of this research is to improve our knowledge of the sea breeze circulation in the complex coastal environments, where more than one mesoscale circulations occur. Interaction of these circulations with each other and with external factors such as topographical features and large scale winds leads to pronounced changes in the thermodynamic structure of the boundary layer. The variations in sea breeze circulation also have distinct effect on the pollutant transport and dispersion mechanisms in the coastal urban areas. In this research, dynamic and thermodynamic characteristics of the sea breeze circulation and their associated air pollution potential have been investigated by utilizing observational data for two summer periods and numerical modelling techniques. Effect of some external factors such as gradient flow and terrain elevation has also been examined. Observed meteorological and air quality data was obtained from a number of monitoring sites within and around Auckland while Advanced Weather Research & Forecasting (WRF) and ‘The Air Pollution Model’ (TAPM) were employed to simulate meteorology and pollutant dispersion in Auckland. WRF is used to investigate the thermally induced mesoscale circulation while TAPM has been employed to examine the pollutant dispersion in the region. Both models were validated against observed data from six different sites within Auckland. Validation results of WRF and TAPM are also compared with surface meteorology. Validation and inter-comparison of the two models show that WRF performed better than TAPM for all the surface meteorology variables. WRF showed a positive bias in predicted winds speed and relative humidity and a cold bias in the near surface Temperature. TAPM on the other hand under-predicted surface winds, while near surface temperature and relative humidity are similar to WRF. Results show that the sea breeze occurred around 20% of the two summer periods of 2006 and 2007. Both observed data analysis and the numerical modelling results confirmed the existence of two thermally induced systems in the Auckland region. Bay breezes are initiated in the morning hours (0800 – 1000 hours) from small bodies of water (Manukau, Waitemata, and Kaipara Harbour, and along the Hauraki Gulf coastline), followed by mature sea breezes from the main bodies of water (Tasman Sea and larger Hauraki Gulf area) in the late morning. The cessation of sea breezes started after 1600 hours. Frequency of sea breeze days was the highest under coast-parallel gradient winds (southeast and northwest), with speeds < 6 m s-1. The predicted depth of the sea breeze inflow ranged between 200 and 600 m, while the depth of the return flow was in the range of 200 – 500 m. Sensible heat flux is an important control in the development of sea breeze over the region. Coastal mountain ranges helped early onset of the sea breeze, but also inhibited inland propagation. Strong jet-like westerly winds along the coastline near the Manukau Harbour are due partly to the narrow opening at the Manukau Head, reduced friction over the harbour water, and divergence of wind due to coastline shape. Gradient winds significantly affect the evolution of the sea breeze and modify many of its dynamics, such as the sea breeze inflow layer, return flow, inland penetration, sea breeze head, etc. Under northerly gradient flow northeast sea breeze lasts longer while under southerly gradient flow cessation of the westerly sea breeze was delayed. Over both east and west coasts, WRF predicted anticlockwise rotation, especially under easterly gradient wind conditions. However, inland stations near Manukau Harbour show partial and complete clockwise rotation, which is primarily due to orographic features of the region. The diurnal rotation of the sea breeze system may contribute to recirculation of pollutants in the morning hours under coast-parallel gradient wind conditions. Pollutants that are emitted during morning peak traffic hours and advected towards Manukau Harbour by the remnants of the land breeze may be returned by bay breezes in the mid morning hours. Mixed layer height over land before arrival of the sea breeze also varied a lot and ranged between 600 to 1400 m. A convective internal boundary layer (CIBL) forms in the surface layer after arrival of the sea breeze. The CIBL under coast parallel gradient winds was relatively shallow (200 – 400 m), while under coasts-normal gradient winds (southwest and northeast), the predicted depth was in the range of 400 to 500 m. However, the inland extent of the CIBL was greater under coast-normal winds, especially under south-westerly gradient winds. The ground level concentration of air pollutants thus can be increased during sea breeze inflow over the region. Both bay breeze and mature sea breeze contribute towards development, extent and strength of the sea breeze convergence zones (SBCZs). Gradient winds and terrain play an important role in the position and strength of SBCZs. Under strong south-westerly gradient flow, a SBCZ is formed along the eastern coastline, while under north-easterly gradient winds a SBCZ is formed along the west coastline. During coast-parallel gradient winds the SBCZ is formed in the middle of landmass, and is then gradually displaced eastward or westward depending on the balance between large scale PGF and surface friction effect. In addition to SBCZs, terrain and coastline-induced convergences were also evident. Higher ground level concentrations of pollutants are expected under coast-normal gradient winds, when SBCZs are formed in the middle of the land mass and the wind speed of the sea breeze inflow and the sea breeze front is relatively low. This may increase pollution concentration, especially in the evening hours, to unacceptable levels. Results of this research suggest that given the size, synoptic meteorology and specific geography of the region, significant recirculation of pollutants is not likely to happen to contribute to next day’s pollution. The pollutant concentration may increase in the SBCZs, but their ability to recirculate the pollutants requires more extensive research. A closed sea breeze circulation cell is unlikely to form in this region due to topographical influences and a strong gradient wind effect. The pollutant plume is expected to be advected in the return flow over the peaks of higher terrain and via the top of the convergence zones, but its remixing in the onshore flow is subject to many factors such as gradient wind speed and direction, direction of the return flow and nature (size and state) of the pollutant. In appropriate conditions, pollution levels may reach to unhealthy levels under coast-parallel gradient wind condition.

Capillary pore-size distribution and equilibrium moisture content of wood determined by means of pressure plate technique

Zauer, Mario, Meissner, Frank, Plagge, Rudolf, Wagenführ, André 23 June 2020 (has links)
This paper deals with the determination of the capillary pore-size distribution (CPSD) and equilibrium moisture content (EMC) of untreated and thermally modified (TM) Norway spruce [Picea abies (L.) Karst.] by means of the pressure plate technique (PPT). Desorption experiments were conducted at very high values of relative humidity (RH) in the range between 99.2% and 100%. The thermal modification of spruce results in an alteration of the CPSD, owing to the formation of intercellular cracks in the middle lamella, as a result of cell-wall compression. The desorption curves for both untreated and TM spruce show an extremely upward bend at 99.97% RH. This step reflects an EMC of 38.1% for untreated spruce and 33.8% for TM spruce. None of the samples shrunk during the PPT measurements. Following desorption experiments at 97.4% RH, all samples shrunk. This step reflects an EMC of 27.9% for untreated spruce and 21.7% for TM spruce.
