The British image of the French Third Republic, 1870-1882

Cole, Phillip Albert January 1963 (has links)
Thesis (Ph.D.)--Boston University / The purpose of this study is to explain the British reaction to the principal events of the French Third Republic from 1870 to 1882, a significant period in Anglo-French relations. Previous historical investigation of these years has placed a disproportionate emphasis on diplomatic records, whereas the sentiments and views of the British nation have not previously been made the subject of a systematic study. The material for this research consists primarily of diaries, letters, biographies, autobiographies, monthly reviews, and newspapers. Each chapter traces the general trend and the variations of public opinion during a particular phase of the Republic's history. Despite the shift of European power from Paris to Berlin as a result of the Franco-Prussian War, the British nation continued its close interest in French affairs. In the eyes of Englishmen, France remained one of the most brilliant and troublesome nations of Europe [TRUNCATED]

The NDP and the Third Party Curse in Canada

Mavrikkou, Maria January 2009 (has links)
This thesis evaluates the position of the NDP as Canada’s third party in federal electoral politics. It analyzes three external factors, the electoral system, the party finance system and the effects of voter behaviour and low voter turnout on the electoral success of the NDP. This work aims to discover why the NDP is seemingly caught in what this thesis refers to as a third party curse. Each of the three external factors which are susceptible to change are analyzed individually to discover whether they have a negative effect on the electoral success of the party.

Evaluation of Third Party Logistics Providers And Their services in Sweden

Oduose, Godspower January 2011 (has links)
This thesis focuses on third party logistics providers in Sweden and their service offerings. The author examines, evaluate and discuss the range of third party logistics services provided by third party logistics companies in Sweden. Furthermore, the author categorized the third party logistics providers using some of proposed frameworks and theories for differentiating third party logistics providers from previous researchers. This was done to determine the relevant categories that the third party logistics providers in Sweden belongs to. Moreover, the author made a comparison of the competence of third party logistics providers in terms of the number of services they offer in Sweden. The author used the qualitative research approach as the thesis is more exploratory in nature. Basically, exploratory research is conducted to obtain greater understanding of a concept or to help clarify ambiguous problem. The author interview four (4) third party logistics providers in Sweden and other information such as the provider’s website information and annual reports was used in the analysis. It is interesting to note that, relationship between third party logistics providers and their customer is a major factor when classifying providers into different category. Some of the theories proposed by previous researcher on the classification of third party logistics provider have become obsolete due to the fact that the relationship between the third party logistics providers and their customers has evolve over the years from formal cooperation to strategic alliance and joint ownership. Some of the companies are less competent than others in terms of the services they offer in each of the third party logistics service categories. This does not necessarily make them weaker because the services they offer in each of the categories are being driven by the company’s business strategy to stay competitive in the third party logistics industry. Furthermore, although size and global status give some competitive advantages, adopting different strategies such as creating a niche market in a particular service or a particular industry will provide major competitive advantages to third party logistics providers.

A Study of the Strategies of Third Generation Mobile Communication Service

Lin, Su-hui 14 June 2006 (has links)
The growth of the mobile communication subscription is the main driver of the operators¡¦ revenues, before the appearance of 3G mobile communication service. As the penetration rate of mobile phones jumped over 100% in Taiwan, it¡¦s obvious that the life cycle of the GSM system has shifted to the mature stage, which all of the operators are under the pressure of low growth rate of voice service and declining ARPU rate due to the fierce price war in the market, and started to introduce 3G service. The 3G mobile communication technology offers users higher speed data communication, mobile commerce solutions, and multimedia services on the current 2G mobile communication basis. This has brought hope to mobile communication industry. In order to enhance the value-added services, operators must evolve its current role, which simply provide equipment and infrastructure service, to become a total solution provider that can integrate the whole industry value chain vertically. Therefore, this study mainly focuses on the 3G industry value chain and the competitive strategies. Moreover, this study will discuss global mobile communication development circumstances and the operation strategies of the worldwide leading players, in order to come up with appropriate managing tactics. Hopefully, the successful experience from successful companies can help Taiwan operators to understand more about the trend of global communication market strategies

Density and geometry of the third metacarpal in juvenile racehorses treated with exogenous equine somatotropin

Thomson, Katherine Lenore 01 November 2005 (has links)
The effect of exogenous somatotropin (eST) on bone changes were evaluated in twenty-nine juvenile horses in race training using radiographs of the third metacarpal obtained over the course of a 128 day research project. A biodensitometer was used to measure bone density, and a micrometer was used to measure cortical bone width and medullary cavity width. Fifteen horses were given daily intramuscular injections of eST and fourteen horses were given daily intramuscular injections of sterile saline and served as the control group. By day 128, the increase in total radiographic bone aluminum equivalence (RBAE) was significantly greater in the eST horses than in the control horses. The increases in RBAE in the dorsal and the medial cortices were greater in the eST horses than in the control horses, but these differences were not significant. There was a trend for changes in the ratio of RBAE in the dorsal to palmar and in the medial to lateral cortices to be greater in the eST than in the control horses. By day 128, the increases in both the dorsal and the medial cortical bone width were significantly greater in the eST than in the control group of horses. The eST horses had a significantly greater decrease in dorsal to palmar medullary cavity width, and increase in dorsal to palmar bone diameter than the control group. A computed index of dorsal cortical bone increased significantly more in the eST than in the control group. The stresses applied to bone are greater in the dorso-medial direction in racehorses. To decrease the strain, bone must either increase in bone mineral density, cortical width, and/or bone diameter. Both the eST group and the control group did make these changes in bone over time, but the eST group more effectively remodeled and modeled bone to increase the strength of the third metacarpal than did the control group of horses. In this research project, exogenous somatotropin treatment had a positive effect on the density and geometry of the third metacarpal. These changes are believed to result in a decreased risk of bone injury to the eST treated horses.
