Exploring Six-Phase Transmission Lines for Increasing Power Transfer With Limited Right Of Way

January 2012 (has links)
abstract: In the United States, especially in metropolitan areas, transmission infra-structure is congested due to a combination of increasing load demands, declining investment, and aging facilities. It is anticipated that significant investments will be required for new construction and upgrades in order to serve load demands. This thesis explores higher phase order systems, specifically, six-phase, as a means of increasing power transfer capability, and provides a comparison with conventional three-phase double circuit transmission lines. In this thesis, the line parameters, electric and magnetic fields, and right of way are the criteria for comparing six-phase and three-phase double circuit lines. The calculations of the criteria were achieved by a program developed using MATLAB. This thesis also presents fault analysis and recommends suitable pro-tection for six-phase transmission lines. This calculation was performed on 4-bus, 9-bus, and 118-bus systems from Powerworld® sample cases. The simulations were performed using Powerworld® and PSCAD®. Line parameters calculations performed in this thesis show that line imped-ances in six-phase lines have a slight difference, compared to three-phase double circuit line. The shunt capacitance of compacted six phase line is twice of the value in the three-phase double circuit line. As a consequence, the compacted six-phase line provides higher surge impedance loadings. The electric and magnetic fields calculations show that, ground level electric fields of the six-phase lines decline more rapidly as the distance from center of the lines increase. The six-phase lines have a better performance on ground level magnetic field. Based on the electric and magnetic field results, right of way re-quirements for the six-phase lines and three-phase double circuit line were calcu-lated. The calculation results of right of way show that six-phase lines provide higher power transfer capability with a given right of way. Results from transmission line fault analysis, and protection study show that, fault types and protection system in six-phase lines are more complicated, com-pared to three-phase double circuit line. To clarify the concern about six-phase line protection, a six-phase line protection system was designed. Appropriate pro-tection settings were determined for a six-phase line in the 4-bus system. / Dissertation/Thesis / M.S. Electrical Engineering 2012

CoordenaÃÃo de AperfeiÃoamento de Pessoal de NÃvel Superior / This dissertation reports applications of artificial neural networks to detect stator winding interturn fault of three phase induction motor drived by frequency inverter. The artificial neural networks, like Simple and Multilayer Perceptron, served as off-line classifiers to short-circuit fault condition or healthy condition. In the training of Multilayer Perceptron, two different algorithms are used: the error back-propagation, which is a classic algorithm, and the extreme learning machine, as a relative new alternative for the classic back-propagation. The new one is more worthwhile because of its implementation easiness and higher speed of computation. The database used on the training and validation of the networks is created from an experimental setting, therefore it is composed by true data. The attributes used as failuresâ indicators are selected from certain frequencies of the spectrum, based on some theories of current signature analysis. In the second instance, the technique of principal components analysis is employed. The results obtained for the designed classifiers are shown, and some considerations are made on their use in real time embedded applications, which is the most important projection for future researches.

Alex Roger Almeida Colmanetti 29 September 2016 (has links)
Two-phase flows as well as three-phase flow in annular geometry are present in many industrial applications, for example in oil directional wells. However, even global characteristics of gas-liquid flow in this geometry, such as flow patterns and pressure gradient are not fully understood. Moreover, information is scarce when it refers to three-phase flow in this geometry, which application is related to the phase inversion phenomenon, which is of extreme importance and not only for the oil industry. This experimental study aims to evaluate the liquid-gas flow, present new data from gas-liquid flow for three oil viscosities and evaluate the phase inversion phenomenon in vertical upward flow in large diameter annular duct. An experimental apparatus with 10.5 m length was designed and built for this work. The radial dimensions of the annular duct are similar to full scale, as observed in oil and gas wells. The investigation into gas-liquid flow was conducted using water, oil and compressed air as working fluids in an ascending vertical flow in two geometries: (i) a tube with 95 mm diameter and (ii) a concentric annular duct with hydraulic diameter equivalent to the tube internal diameter. The evaluation of the phase inversion phenomenon in three-phase flow was conducted under equivalent conditions for three geometries: (i) smaller vertical tube with 50 mm of internal diameter, (ii) tube with 95 mm of internal diameter and (iii) concentric annular duct with hydraulic diameter of 95 mm. Flow patterns, pressure drop and volumetric phase fraction were obtained for both gas-liquid and gas-liquid-liquid flows. The data collected in this study are of great importance for the development of new closing correlations, which are essential for the optimized design of oil wells. New two-phase flow data for three oil viscosities, not found in the literature, are presented as well as a pioneer study in three-phase-flow phase inversion with high oil viscosity and high superficial gas velocity.

Smart Inverter Control and Operation for Distributed Energy Resources

Tazay, Ahmad F. 27 October 2017 (has links)
The motivation of this research is to carry out the control and operation of smart inverters and voltage source converters (VSC) for distributed energy resources (DERs) such as photovoltaic (PV), battery, and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV). The main contribution of the research includes solving a couple of issues for smart grids by controlling and implementing multifunctions of VSC and smart inverter as well as improving the operational scheme of the microgrid. The work is mainly focused on controlling and operating of smart inverter since it promises a new technology for the future microgrid. Two major applications of the smart inverter will be investigated in this work based on the connection modes: microgrid at grid-tied mode and autonomous mode. \indent In grid-tied connection, the smart inverter and VSC are used to integrate DER such as Photovoltaic (PV) and battery to provide suitable power to the system by controlling the supplied real and reactive power. The role of a smart inverter at autonomous mode includes supplying a sufficient voltage and frequency, mitigate abnormal condition of the load as well as equally sharing the total load's power. However, the operational control of the microgrid still has a major issue on the operation of the microgrid. The dissertation is divided into two main sections which are: 1- Low-level control of a single smart Inverter. 2- High-level control of the microgrid. The first part investigates a comprehensive research for a smart inverter and VSC technology at the two major connections of the microgrid. This involves controlling and modeling single smart inverter and VSC to solve specific issues of microgrid as well as improve the operation of the system. The research provides developed features for smart inverter comparing with a conventional voltage sourced converter (VSC). The two main connections for a microgrid have been deeply investigated to analyze a better way to develop and improve the operational procedure of the microgrid as well as solve specific issues of connecting the microgrid to the system. A detailed procedure for controlling VSC and designing an optimal operation of the controller is also covered in the first part of the dissertation. This section provides an optimal operation for controlling motor drive and demonstrates issues when motor load exists at an autonomous microgrid. It also provides a solution for specific issues at operating a microgrid at autonomous mode as well as improving the structural design for the grid-tied microgrid. The solution for autonomous microgrid includes changing the operational state of the switching pattern of the smart inverter to solve the issue of a common mode voltage (CMV) that appears across the motor load. It also solves the issue of power supplying to large loads, such as induction motors. The last section of the low-level section involves an improvement of the performance and operation of the PV charging station for a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) at grid-tied mode. This section provides a novel structure and smart controller for PV charging station using three-phase hybrid boost converter topology. It also provides a form of applications of a multifunction smart inverter using PV charging station. The second part of the research is focusing on improving the performance of the microgrid by integrating several smart inverters to form a microgrid. It investigates the issue of connecting DER units with the microgrid at real applications. One of the common issues of the microgrid is the circulating current which is caused by poor reactive power sharing accuracy. When more than two DER units are connected in parallel, a microgrid is forming be generating required power for the load. When the microgrid is operated at autonomous mode, all DER units participate in generating voltage and frequency as well as share the load's power. This section provides a smart and novel controlling technique to solve the issue of unequal power sharing. The feature of the smart inverter is realized by the communication link between smart inverters and the main operator. The analysis and derivation of the problem are presented in this section. The dissertation has led to two accepted conference papers, one accepted transaction IEEE manuscript, and one submitted IET transaction manuscript. The future work aims to improve the current work by investigating the performance of the smart inverter at real applications.

Active converter based on the VIENNA rectifier topology interfacing a three-phase generator to a DC-bus

Visser, Jacobus Hendrik 25 October 2007 (has links)
AC-DC converters find application in every day life as a front-end to DC-DC and DC-AC converters. Active three-phase converters shape the three-phase input current to be sinusoidal and to be in-phase with the input voltage, as well as to provide a steady DC output voltage. This thesis investigates various active three-phase rectifier and control topologies and identifies a rectifier and control topology most suitable for use in converting a variable voltage variable frequency generator output to a DC voltage. In this dissertation, design relations are derived for determining the plant transfer response (for the suitable topology/controller), design equations are derived for designing/choosing the filter components, and guidelines are derived that will assist in choosing the right semi-conductor components and to give an estimation of expected system efficiency. The dissertation investigates the implementation of both analogue and digital control and provides implementation methodologies for both controllers. Expected results are verified by simulation and a build-up prototype. It was shown that the VIENNA rectifier is able to convert a generator type input, with variable input voltage amplitude and variable frequency, to a constant DC-bus voltage whilst controlling the input current to be sinusoidal and in phase with the input voltage. The rectifier was able to maintain a constant DC voltage at the output for input voltages as low as half the rated input voltage and for an equivalent output power of half the rated output power. This suggests that the VIENNA rectifier, controlled as a dual-boost rectifier, is suitable for applications that require power factor corrections and simultaneously operate from a wide input voltage range. / Dissertation (MEng (Electrical Engineering))--University of Pretoria, 2007. / Electrical, Electronic and Computer Engineering / MEng / unrestricted

Experimental and Numerical Study of Calcium Treatment of Steel / Etude expérimentale et numérique du traitement inclusionnaire de l’acier par injection de calcium

Priyadarshi, Harsh 10 July 2019 (has links)
In order to diminish the harmful effects of aluminate inclusions and improve the castability of molten steel, calcium treatment is widely used in Aluminum killed steels. However, calcium treatment gives irregular results. Even with many efforts done to understand the behavior of calcium in liquid steel, it is not yet accurately predicted. Therefore, the mechanism by which the calcium dissolves into the liquid steel and transforms the solid inclusions must be understood to optimize the process conditions such as injection speed, injection depth, injection wire diameter, stirring time, etc. In order to understand the mechanism by which the calcium dissolves into the liquid steel, laboratory scale experiments have been performed in a small induction furnace of 2.5 kg metal capacity. The calcium injections are performed at the temperature below and above the boiling point of calcium. Then, the corresponding yields (calcium recovery) are compared. Rise of calcium droplet or bubble in liquid steel is a three-phase problem (calcium droplet or calcium bubble/liquid steel/air at the top). Therefore, an in-house scientific computational platform (ICI-tech) based on finite element methods is adapted to allow the modeling of such three-phase flows, which is validated using the classical benchmark issued from the literature. The dissolution model has been implemented in our software, and their validation has been performed. Thereafter, the rise of Calcium droplets and bubbles are studied in the liquid steel, and their respective average mass transfer coefficient in the liquid steel is reported. In order to study the calcium liquid/gas phase change, the nucleation model has been implemented in the code (ICI-tech). A typical test is performed where the growth of a bubble (water vapor) in uniformly superheated water and growth of a calcium bubble in uniformly superheated Ca liquid is computed.
