A presente dissertação pretende mostrar marcas de uma possível criação de um \"espaço ficcional\" no contato do aluno de espanhol como língua estrangeira (LE) e a língua que estuda. Para chegar a estas marcas postulamos uma metáfora que pode comparar o \"espaço ficcional\" com as representações sobre a língua espanhola no Brasil. Como amostra de pesquisa coletamos redações de alunos de espanhol como LE de níveis intermediário e avançado. Foram obtidas cinco amostras com diferentes gêneros e temáticas. Analisando as redações encontramos regularidades que nos levam a perceber a criação de um \"espaço ficcional\", cuja descrição crítica pode ser outro modo de ver o que acontece com a subjetividade na aprendizagem de uma LE. No caminho que nos leva em direção ao espaço ficcional, encontramos uma série de tons e vozes. E também enunciados sobre um encantamento com a língua espanhola que parece promover a possibilidade de entrar em espaços novos e transformar estes espaços alheios em próprios por uma apropriação ou absorção do estranho. / The present dissertation intends to show marks of a possible creation of a \'fictional space\' in the contact of a student of Spanish as a foreign language and with the language he studies. In order to get these marks a metaphor that can compare the \'fictional space\' to the representations on the Spanish language in Brazil was postulated. As research sample, compositions of intermediate and advanced-level students of Spanish were collected. Five samples with different genres and themes were made. Analyzing the compositions we have found regularities that lead us to notice the creation of a \'fictional space\', whose critical description can be another way of seeing what happens with the subjectivity in the learning of one foreign language. On the road that takes us towards the fictional space, we have found a series of tones and voices. It is also enunciated an enchantment with the Spanish language that seems to promote the possibility to enter in new spaces and to transform these strange spaces in their own for a stranger\'s appropriation or absorption.

An Investigation of Perception of a Frequency Modulated Band Location of Pitch Within a Musical Vibrato

The purpose of this study was to investigate aspects of pitch perception of auditors when presented with musical tones whose frequencies were modulated. Research problems were: estimation of the effect of musical training upon pitch perception; estimation of the effect of stimuli of differing tonal qualities and frequency ranges upon perception; and estimation of the effect of solo and ensemble performances upon pitch perception. Subjects for the study were thirty musicians and thirty nonmusicians. Subjects were students at North Texas State University and Paris Junior College who had volunteered for the study. A test containing thirty-six items was developed which required subjects to match a tone created by a sawtooth wave generator to a simultaneously presented musical tone performed with vibrato. Each subject was tested individually, and allowed three attempts to match each test item. After the third playing of each item, a reading was taken of the frequency selected by the subject, Using the split half method, reliability for the test was found to be .86 for nonmusicians and .88 for musicians. ANOVA evaluation of responses of subjects indicated that there was a significant difference.in the location of pitch among musicians and nonmusicians, with musicians locating the pitch somewhat higher in the frequency spectrum than nonmusicians. Neither group located the pitch of modulated musical tones at the geometric mean of the modulation. Differences located in responses of the groups were consistant with regard to stimuli of varying frequency levels and timbres, and were unaffected by either solo or ensemble performance of the stimulus. Subsidiary findings indicated that among musicians no significant differences in pitch perception may be traced to the major performing instrument of the subject; differences in these subgroups and nonmusicians were consistant with the findings comparing musicians as "a whole and nonmusicians. Suggestions were made concerning application of the findings to musical training and concerning possibilities for further investigation in perception of pitch.

An early detection of hearing loss in children is important for the child's speech and language development. For children between 3-6 months, a reliable method to measure hearing and determine hearing thresholds is missing. A hearing test based on the pupillary response to auditory signal detection as measured by eye tracking is based on an automatic physiological response. This hearing test could be used instead of the objective hearing tests used today. The presence of pupillary response has been shown in response to speech, but it is unstudied in response to sinus tones. The objective of this thesis was to study whether there is a consistent pupillary response to different sinus tone frequencies commonly used in hearing tests and if yes, to determine reliably the time window of this response. Four different tests were done. The adult pupillary response in regard to sinus tone stimuli with four frequency levels (500 Hz, 1000 Hz, 2000 Hz and 4000 Hz), and four loudness levels (silence, 30 dB, 50 dB and 70 dB) was tested (N=20, 15 females, 5 males). Different brightness levels and distractions on the eye tracking screen were investigated in three substudies (N=5, 4 females, 1 male). Differences between silence and loudness levels within frequency levels were tested for statistical significance. A pupillary response in regard to sinus tones occurred consistently between 300 ms and 2000 ms with individual variation, i.e. earlier than for speech sounds. Differences between silence and loudness levels were only statistically significant for 4000 Hz. No statistical difference was shown between different brightness levels or if there were distractions present on the eye tracker screen. The conclusion is that pupillary response to pure sinus tones in adults is a possible measure of hearing threshold for at least 4000 Hz. Larger studies are needed to confirm this, and also to more thoroughly investigate the other frequencies. / En tidig upptäckt av hörselnedsättning hos barn är viktig för barnets tal- och språkutveckling. För barn mellan 3-6 månader saknas det en tillförlitlig metod för att mäta hörsel och bestämma hörtrösklar. Ett hörseltest baserad på pupillreaktion på ljud som mäts med en eye tracker bygger på en automatisk fysiologisk reaktion och skulle kunna användas istället för de objektiva test som används idag. Hitintills har pupillreaktion på tal påvisats, men det saknas studier som studerat eventuella reaktioner på sinustoner. Syftet med denna uppsats var att undersöka om det finns en enhetlig pupillreaktion på de olika frekvenserna av sinustoner som vanligen används i hörseltest. Vidare var studiens syfte att fastställa ett tillförlitligt tidsfönster för pupillreaktion. Fyra olika typer av tester utfördes. Pupillreaktionen mot sinustoner med fyra olika frekvensnivåer (500 Hz, 1000 Hz, 2000 Hz och 4000 Hz), och fyra olika ljudnivåer (tystnad, 30 dB, 50 dB och 70 dB) undersöktes i ett test på vuxna deltagare (N=20, 15 kvinnor, 5 män). Olika ljusnivåer och distraktioner på eye tracker-skärmen undersöktes i tre test (N=5, 4 kvinnor, 1 man). Skillnaderna mellan ljudnivåer och frekvensnivåer testades med statistiska tester. Resultaten visade att pupillreaktion på sinustoner inträffade konsekvent mellan 300 ms och 2000 ms med individuella variationer. Denna reaktionstid inträffar tidigare än för taljud. En statistisk signifikant skillnad mellan tystnad och olika ljudnivåer kunde endast ses för frekvensnivån 4000 Hz. Ingen statistisk skillnad uppmättes mellan olika ljudnivåer eller om det fanns distraktioner på eye tracker-skärmen. De i studien framkomna resultaten tyder på att pupillreaktioner mot rena sinustoner hos vuxna är en möjlig metod för att identifiera hörseltrösklar för åtminstone 4000 Hz. Större studier behöver göras för att fastställa detta och en noggrannare undersökning behöver genomföras för de andra frekvenserna.

Environmental ethics and environmental journalism are influencing the developing philosophy of environmental citizenship. This philosophy involves the ideas that people are part of the environment, that the future depends on a healthy environment, and that action on behalf of the environment is necessary. It applies to individuals, communities, large and small companies and corporations, governments, and a coalition of nations. Environmental philosophers and environmental journalists can work together, in a symbiotic way, to foster discussions among citizens and policy makers about ideas as well as events, and thus, influence attitudes and policies, and continue to influence environmental citizenship. Environmental citizenship as an extension of democracy offers the best chance for undoing the manmade problems which are degrading the quality of life on Earth. A healthier environment is the will of the people. An informed, voting public will succeed in creating a healthier environment. Pioneering work by philosophers and journalists, especially over the last forty-five years has brought the dialogue about environmental problems to an unprecedented level and continues to offer encouragement to the mindful evolution of mankind. These ecological discussions of rights and responsibilities, intrinsic and economic values, pragmatism and utilitarianism, culture and spirit, are increasingly being applied to a developing idea of sustainability, and are, thus, helping to expand ideas about what it means to be a citizen in a democracy.

This thesis introduces the modern flute techniques used in the solo flute piece Laconisme de l’aile by Kaija Saariaho. The purpose is to find ways to excecute the techniques so that they serve the music in the best way. The techniques are divided in five groups based on how they are excecuted: effects made with the mouth, changing the timbre, multiphonics, effects made by fingers and diffenent sounds by blowing. As an attachment there is a recording of the piece and how the techniques sound in the context. Investigation of fluid-dynamic cavity oscillations and the effects of flow angle in an automotive context using an open-jet wind tunnel.

Aeroacoustic whistles are a significant source of customer complaints to automotive manufacturers. Whistles can occur on many such components, but the relative position and configuration of rearview mirrors means they are a more problematic source of tonal noise on vehicles. The low subsonic complex turbulent flow, combined with small cavity scales, determines the possible whistle mechanisms. The one considered to be most problematic, fluid-dynamic cavity resonance, is the topic of this research thesis. The research scope is limited to the automotive environment of external rearview mirrors and the fluid-dynamic resonance mechanism: low subsonic Mach number, M = 0.05 - 0.13; laminar boundary layers; and two-dimensional, acoustically compact cavities. The low unit-cost of rearview mirrors and the desire to have simple identification and prediction schemes, that could be used by production engineers, determined an empirical approach. A search of the existing literature revealed that there were some data on cavities of the above scale in low Mach number flow, but quoted errors in empirical descriptions were large and there was very little research on the effects of flow yaw angle on the chosen resonance mechanism. The research therefore aims to determine whether existing empirical descriptions of fluid-dynamic cavity resonance are suitable for the prediction of the resonance characteristics, with sufficient accuracy to enable unambiguous identification of the presence of the resonance and its mechanism. A second aim is to investigate the effects of a feature of the automotive flow environment, flow yaw angle, on the resonance. Flow yaw angle is determined by those components of the flow in the same plane as the surface in which the cavity is situated. An experimental program was undertaken using a purpose-built aeroacoustic wind tunnel and a simple cavity model. Testing with two types of cavity configurations, as well as flow visualisation, investigated the main features of the resonance in time-averaged yawed flow. Within the scope of this thesis, it is shown that fluid-dynamic cavity resonance characteristics can be accurately identified by a simple empirical model, even in yawed flow. Various descriptors allow identification of the resonance threshold, stage, frequency and relative amplitude in non-yawed flow, while the frequency and stage can also be identified in yawed flow. The relative decrease in resonance amplitude in yawed flow, although identified for these experiments, would depend on the degree of spanwise variation in the boundary layer characteristics for a given cavity configuration. The results also identify significant issues with testing in a free jet tunnel, due to the nature of fluid-dynamic cavity resonance and the fluctuation energy content in free shear layers. Despite this, the thesis aims are achieved, and appropriate design guidelines are produced for automotive designers.
