Surfing the Tide of Sex Anarchy: How Sexual Co-Revolutionaries Remade Evangelical Marriage, 1960-1980

Morris, Robert Nathanael 23 March 2016 (has links)
This project examines the conservative evangelical response to 1960s era sexual revolution in order to explain how and why evangelicals both resisted and adapted tenets of sexual modernity in a process that transformed the theological foundations underlying the conception of Christian marriage and sexuality. Though evangelicals and conservatives are typically portrayed as resistors to cultural and sexual change, my research reveals the ways in which conservative evangelicals agreed with key critiques of the sexual status quo in the 1960s, and deliberately worked to change Christian teachings and attitudes to keep them vibrant and attractive to postwar generations. Previous examinations of evangelical thought on sexuality has focused on rhetorical analysis and social history to the exclusion of examinations of the close ties between evangelical marital theology, sexual practice, and political activism. This project seeks to integrate all three into a cohesive historical framework that reveals evangelical response to sexual revolution as more complex and adaptive than it is typically described. Close readings of conservative evangelical texts from 1960 to 1980 combine the long term editorial trajectory of Christianity Today magazine with ideological and theological texts from the 1960s with popular, practical texts from the 1970s to demonstrate that the evangelical marriage project was deliberate, deeply rooted in a modern hermeneutic of Biblical interpretation, and nimble in its ability and willingness to adapt changing sexual attitudes to accommodate Christian theology and practice. The resulting portrait of evangelical response to sexual revolution is more complex, contextualized, and nuanced than previous narratives.

Machado, Dayana Cristina Mezzonato January 2017 (has links)
The theme of this dissertation is the study of the interactions between social subjects and public policies, having as an empirical reference the traditional family farmers and their appropriation of the Brazil Without Poverty Plan (PBSM). The main objective was to understand the relationship between the different rationalities and the ways of life or experiences of traditional family farmers and the Brazil Without Poverty Plan – Fomento Project. For this, has been investigated the historical formation of traditional farmers in Brazil and Rio Grande do Sul and the trajectory of Brazilian public and social policies from the 1990s. The qualitative method was chosen and the primary data collection instruments were interviews semi-structured, individual and collective, and as secondary dataset, documents and published works about the municipalities surveyed. The research was carried out in the municipalities of Dom Feliciano, Itati and Lajeado do Bugre, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The interviews were carried out with beneficiary families of the Brazil Without Poverty Plan and Emater/RS technicians. For the development of this study the concepts of rationality and ways of life were mobilized. It was observed that production for self-consumption occupies a privileged place in the rationality of traditional farmers. Public policy has been adapted by farmers by adapting it to their expectations and immediate demands, not necessarily generating a transformation of their way of life and the society in which they live. Farmers develop strategies of policy appropriation guided by the rationality of minimum risk, with the aim of strengthening their way of life. The results indicate that farmers' behaviors and behaviors may be associated with the option of a life mode with characteristics closer to traditional ones.

The Political Use of "Family Values" Rhetoric

Powell, Elizabeth Caroline 04 December 2006 (has links)
The bipartisan political slogan “family values,” coupled with discourse surrounding the supposed breakdown of the American family, is a rhetorical move used by political agencies in an effort to excuse the socio-economic failings in America and to reassign responsibility for these failings to the private sphere. This rhetoric tends to promote the idealized nuclear family, while marginalizing the poor and non-traditional family groups.

A Content Analysis of Family Structure in Newbery Medal and Honor Books, 1930 -- 2010

Despain, Shannon Marie 11 July 2012 (has links) (PDF)
Newbery books are a reliable representation of quality children's literature. They have not previously been formally evaluated by the family structures represented in the books. This content analysis considered 87 contemporary realistic fiction Newbery winner and Honor books since the 1930s that portray families in English-speaking, western settings. The family structures portrayed in these books were compared with the family structure categories of the decade in which each book is set. Percentage comparisons revealed that the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s do not represent the actual family structures of their time period. After the Age of New Realism began in the mid 60s, the family structures in the books more closely matched the family structures of their decade, but several discrepancies remained.

The Factors Making First- Year University Students Vulnerable To Pathological Eating Attitudes

Mance, Oyku 01 December 2006 (has links) (PDF)
The purpose of the present study was to find out variables that make first year university students vulnerable to eating disorders. Pathological eating attitudes&rsquo / association with height and weight, family meal patterns, perceived social support, family values and socio-demographic variables were assessed. 299 first year university students from the Department of Basic English at Middle East Technical University participated in the study. Five assessment devices- Demographic data form, the Eating Attitude Test (EAT&ndash / 40), Family Eating Attitude and Behavior Subscales, the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support, and the Traditional Family Values Questionnaire were administered. ANOVAs were conducted to assess differences on eating attitudes between participants in terms of gender, with whom they lived, perceived family type, socio economic status, body mass index and weight satisfaction. Stepwise multiple regressions were conducted to appraise to what extent perceived social support, family meal patterns, traditional family values and demographic variables predicted eating attitudes of first year students. The participants who perceived their family as traditional reported more pathological eating attitudes in dieting, preoccupation with food, social pressure on weight factor. Regression analyses for female participants revealed that dieting, parents occupation, body mass index (current / desired) perceived social support- family, relationships with family and kin, and perceived family income were associated with pathological eating attitudes. Regression analyses for males revealed that dieting, father occupation, desired body mass index and relationships with family and kin were associated with pathological eating attitudes. These findings were discussed with reference to relevant literature. Future research topics were suggested and therapeutic implications of the study were discussed.

Vaiko socializacijos ypatumai egalitarinėje šeimoje / Peculiaritie's of Child's Socialization in Egalitarian Family

Andriuškevičiūtė, Renata 24 January 2011 (has links)
[toliau žr. visą tekstą] / Modern society's attitude towards family is changing due to a man’s and a woman's social roles: from the traditional, where the man is breadwinner and the woman takes care of children and household chores, to the egalitarian (in French egalitaire - Equality), where both spouses (partners) are economically active, share household chores and children care, make decisions. Despite whether the family is egalitarian or traditional, from all common family functions, it accomplishes the most important - the socialization function. There are not many researches, how the changes of family institute affect children's socialization, and therefore, it was decided to investigate parent’s attitude towards children's socialization in an egalitarian family in this Master’s Work. Family institute is now going through a transitional period in Lithuania. The egalitarian provisions of the roles of spouses (partners) have often been intertwined with the traditional, patriarchal roles and so, in this work a key criterion for separating the egalitarian family from a traditional one, is both parents' economic employment. The results of this work showed that in the egalitarian families parents spend not enough time with their children. Due to long working hours the tiredness and shortage of time for the family duties, have negative influence on family life and children's socialization. Master's work consists of three main parts, each part has subsections. The final work consits of eight... [to full text]
