Då har man kanske varit tio timmar på tåg : En studie av resenärers produktion av tågrummet i första klass mellan Stockholm och Göteborg

This thesis addresses how the travellers participate in the production of space during train travels. It is based on a study of intervjues made in December 2013 with six members of the Swedish parliament who all are frequent travellers on the high speed train between Stockholm and Gothenburg. Using Henri Lefebvres theory of the production of space and contemporary theories on spending time during train travel combined with theories of how space and time are bound together as a timespace. The conclusion is that traveller do participate in the production of the train space by activities taking place based on the special conditions of the trainspace during the journey. Activities that forms the idea of lived space on the train as one of three spaces based on Lefebvres model of the triad of space. The study also identify the need of further research on the train space as a space of its own as we spend more and more time in this space.

Work on track! : A train interior design concept to meet contemporary work trends and needs

In a future vision for rail travel, trains will be designed as an activity-based whole space, with different areas for various activities, such as relaxing, socialising or family bonding. My degree project, in collaboration with SJ, proposes a concept carriage dedicated to work, analogous to spending a day at a mobile coworking space. By recognising the new ways of working, this carriage will cater for the needs of different individuals and various types of work and will include private digital meeting spaces, group compartments, collaborative open spaces and cocoon-like seating options in quiet areas. Unlike other modes of transportation, trains allow for passengers to navigate and experience different spaces. By enhancing the use of space and incorporating amenities that improve the user experience, I aim to transform the perception of long train journeys from tedious to exciting and allow a more seamless and efficient way of getting work done while travelling. Ultimately, this degree project encourages sustainable travel through user-centred design.

Transport behaviour of future generations: Plane or train between Malmö and Stockholm?

Denna uppsats undersökte vad som påverkade Malmö högskolas studenter i sina val av tåg- eller flygresor mellan Malmö och Stockholm. Uppsatsen föreslog fyra hypoteser som undersöktes maximering av fritid, ersättningsvaror, komfort samt miljöhänsyn. Data samlades in genom att utforma och dela ut en enkät till 248 elever som analyserades statistiskt. Miljöhänsyn visade sig ha mindre inflytande på valet av resesätt än de andra undersökta faktorerna, ett resultat i linje med tidigare forskning. Kostnaden visade sig vara den viktigaste faktorn. Tågresande var mer vanligt bland den undersökta populationen än i den svenska befolkningen. Resultaten var associerade med osäkerhet eftersom populationen var troliga att ändra resesätt efter avslutade studier. Syftet med uppsatsen var att göra en initial mätning av ovanstående variabler som kan användas i framtida studier med fokus på generationsskifte. / This thesis investigated what influenced student at Malmö Högskola in their choice of train or plane travel between Malmö and Stockholm. The thesis proposed four hypotheses that were investigated: maximization of leisure time, substitute goods, comfort and environmental concern. Data was collected by manufacturing and distributing a questionnaire to 248 students which was analyzed statistically. Environmental concern was found to have less of an influence on the choice of travel means than the other investigated factors, a result consistent with previous research. Cost was found to be the most important factor. Train travel was more common among the sampled population than in the Swedish population. The results were associated with some uncertainty as the population was likely to change their choice of travel means after graduation. The thesis aimed to carry out an initial measurement of the above variables to allow the resulting material to be used in future studies with a generational replacement approach.
