Ego development and theoretical orientation among counseling students.

Warren, Edward Scott 12 1900 (has links)
This study investigated potential relationships between master's level counseling students' levels of ego development and their identified orientations to one of six guiding theories of counseling; students' theoretical orientation classifications when classified according to the theory's domain of emphasis: affective, behavioral, or cognitive; students' degrees of confidence in identifying their theoretical orientations; and students' degrees of comfort in applying their theories in clinical practice. Seventy participants enrolled in a master's level practicum course completed the Washington University Sentence Completion Test, a measure of ego development, and the Counseling Theory Survey, a survey developed by the researcher, in order to identify students' identified theoretical orientations, students' degrees of confidence in identifying their theoretical orientations, and students' degrees of comfort in applying their theories in clinical practice. Ego development level was operationalized as a dichotomous variable consisting of level E5 and below and E6 and above, based on the developmental task attained at E6: a shift from emphasis on in-group identity to self-evaluated standards. To determine potential relationships between the students' ego development levels and their theoretical orientations and their orientations when classified by domain of emphasis, 2 x 4 and 2 x 3 Chi-square analyses were used. Independent t-tests were conducted to determine if the students' degrees of confidence in identifying their theoretical orientation and their degrees of comfort in applying their orientation varied across the two groups. No statistically significant results were found. Alternative explanations for the identification of theoretical orientation, limitations of the study, and suggestions for future research are discussed with emphasis on the need for greater integration of current theories related to the identification of theoretical orientation.

Teacher Experiences and Attitudes Towards First Language Use in Foreign or Second Language Teaching : / Lärares Erfarenheter och Åsikter om Användningen av Modersmål i Främmande- eller Andraspråksundervisning

Karlberg, Mimmi, Eriksson, Jonathan January 2021 (has links)
This paper examines empirical studies regarding teachers’ and teacher-trainees’ perceptions toward the use of first language (L1) when teaching a second or foreign language. The presence of the students’ first language when teaching a foreign or second language has been a disputed topic in relation to different theoretical approaches. The aim of this study is to gain knowledge about this issue by answering the research question “What are teachers’ and teacher-trainees’ experiences and attitudes regarding L1 when teaching in the second or foreign language classroom?” The method used has been to review empirical studies from several different countries from the databases ERIC (Education Resource Education Center) and ERC (Education Research Complete). The overall results reveal that the majority of the participants had positive attitudes toward the use of L1. Additionally, there was an agreement about the need for some level of exposure to the target language (TL). Furthermore, it was shown that teachers saw the first language as something unavoidable and that it should not be seen as a hindrance when it comes to learning another language. However, there are some differences with regard to when it is appropriate to use the students’ L1. Our results agree with the field of research in general and is a small contribution to the discussion of how teachers’ beliefs may have an impact on their pedagogical decisions.

The Relationship Between Counselor Hope And Optimism On Client Outcome

Muenzenmeyer, Michelle M 01 January 2011 (has links)
The counselor is an important contributor to client outcome. Research findings about therapist effects are mixed. In this study positive psychology variables, hope and optimism, were evaluated with client outcome. The sample for this study consisted of 43 graduate-level counselor trainees in the first or second practicum semester and their adult clients in a university’s community counseling clinic. Results revealed no statistically significant relationships between student counselors’ hope and optimism and client outcomes. Post hoc analysis of student hope and their post-graduation expectations, revealed statistically significant relationships. Implications for counselor educators are presented along with areas for future research.

The experience of being a trainee clinical psychologist from a black and minority ethnic group : a qualitative study

Shah, Snehal January 2010 (has links)
Aim: The existing evidence-base indicates that the experience of being a Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) trainee clinical psychologist is under-researched. The aim of the current study was to capture the broader training experiences of BME trainee clinical psychologists. The impact of potential personal and professional experiences that may arise for BME trainee clinical psychologists may be important for course tutors and clinical supervisors to explore with them in relation to personal and professional development. Thus, it is hoped that the findings of the current study will raise an increased awareness within the clinical psychology training courses, of their needs, perspectives and experiences. Method: A qualitative approach was adopted for this study. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with nine BME trainee clinical psychologists. The accounts were analysed using IPA, which attempts to illuminate the lived experience of a phenomenon for small samples of individuals. Results: The analytic procedure highlighted five main themes which emerged from participants’ accounts: The hardship of not being White, The challenge of negotiating multiple identities, Challenges and dilemmas of highlighting race and culture issues, The versatility that comes with being a BME trainee and Finding connections and safe places. Implications: Current initiatives to attract more applicants from BME groups need to be considered in the context of wider structural experiences of power and difference in relation to race, ethnicity and culture that operate in the training arena. Courses need to explicitly state their commitment to supporting trainees from BME groups with regards to their experiences of difference. Emphasis should be placed on personal and professional development of all trainees and needs to include work on privilege, social disadvantage, and racism. Programmes should also undertake a commitment to training course staff and supervisors in relation to race issues in the context of training.

Současné přístupy k vzdělávání učitelů anglického jazyka v reflexi studentských praxí / Current Approaches to English Teacher Education as Reflected in Trainees' Teaching Practice

Holý, Tomáš January 2011 (has links)
This work deals with the English language teacher training approaches administered at the Department of English Language and Literature of the Faculty of Education, Charles University in Prague. The work seeks answers to which aspects of teacher competence are developed by each of the approaches. As almost half of the trainees involved in the research had a previous teaching experience, the role of teaching experience on the development of teaching skills is also examined. Teacher trainees' written reflections on their teaching practice are analyzed using a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods. The results are related to current trends in teacher education.

Christino, Verônica Caldeira Leite 22 August 2013 (has links)

Research subjects were students graduating in the period 2011/2, beginner teachers of Chemistry and trainees in the Colégio Municipal Pelotense in the period 2011/2 to 2012/1, all students or graduates of the Degree Course in Chemistry UFPel. The survey was conducted with a methodology that meets assumptions of discourse analysis, based on the theory of Michel Foucault (2012), considering speech as a practice that produces the objects about which it speaks. Interviews, questionnaires and records of responses to a hypothetical situation created for the interviewees to manifest their opinion about the undergraduate program and being a teacher were taken as analysis corpus. Data analysis showed the recurrence of an utterance that permeates different discourses, in the university and in the school, in which being an elementary school teacher is something diminished, and it is possible to see, throughout the study, its effects on the formation of professional identity . From the results of the analysis, it is clear that there is an estrangement of the school by subjects who begin teaching, either as a trainee or as a beginner teacher. I see the proposition of thinking actions for monitoring beginner teachers and especially trainees as a way to draw attention to the role of the university and the school as teacher training agencies, from the initial formation, which may contribute to soften estrangements between university and school, pointed by the subjects of this research.

Besides the observations was also used semi-structured interviews with teachers educators. The study is organized into five chapters. Initially I do my presentation and my approaches to music education in the context of childhood. Then frame the research institution by drawing a picture from my inserts there. Then I present insights into childhood in order to contextualize my eye this phase of development, and issues peculiar to childhood in the context of school education. Following step to the discussion of music education in early childhood education and then present the musical education I found in the context under study. I could see that the educators working in the institution have a vision of music as an area of knowledge, which is partly the presence of the trainees in their teaching contexts. However, in general, I realize that there is still need encouragement to those teachers looking for ways to articulate their teaching music education.
