Exploring relationships between reading attitudes, reading ability and academic performance among teachers trainees in Swaziland

Lukhele, B.B.S. January 2009 (has links)
Attitudes to extensive reading have been shown to be crucial in the additional language (AL) learning classroom. Research seems to confirm that the affective domain – attitudes, motivations, interests and personal evaluations – is essential in a study of behaviour and practice in the AL classroom. The current study aims to find out what the reading attitudes and practices of students at a teacher training college are and explore whether there are significant relationships between the students’ reading attitudes and their reading ability, vocabulary skills and academic performance. It is in light of the above-mentioned quest that we seek to understand what reading attitudes are and what they entail. The ‘attitude’ construct is defined by Guthrie and Greaney (1991: 87) who state that people’s attitudes to reading are resultant from “perceptions” acquired from past reading experiences regarding how pleasurable and valuable reading is. It appears that positive reading outcomes assist in the development of a positive attitude, whereas negative outcomes of reading tend to discourage further ventures into reading, resulting in the development of a negative attitude (McKenna, Kear & Ellsworth, 1995: 941). / Educational Studies / M. Skolperspektiv : Utveckling av verktyg för analys av politikers, lärares och elevers resonemang om skolan / Perspectives on the school : Development of tools for analyzing the reasoning of politicians, teachers and pupils regarding the school

Henningsson-Yousif, Anna January 2003 (has links)
The major objective has been to create tools for analyzing the reasoning regarding the school the different actors involved - pupils, teachers, school and politicians show. A subordinate aim was to explore relevance in this connection of eight studies carried out by the author 1979 – 1999 concerning three basic areas: the pedagogical processes at the school level, at the teacher education level and at the level of school change. I conclude that a recurring question is that of the relevance and the sense of meaningfulness experienced by those involved in different educational processes. In one of the eight empirical studies, termed the compulsory-school teacher study (1997), an approach to analyzing what teacher trainees find relevant in their work in schools is presented, involving two basic concepts, those of the event space and the relational space. In considering these concepts in terms of Alfred Schutz' theory of the lifeworld, I rename the relational space the space of contemporaries. A new study is also reported in this thesis – Teachers and schoolpoliticians in the pedagogical process of school change, the LoP-study. In considering the earlier eight studies in conjunction with the LoP-study, I find the studies to have dealt with personal processes and societal processes as well as pedagogical processes in how the parties involved reason in talking about the school. Three different aspects of the processes are distinguished: meta-aspects, connected with the aims a given process has; core aspects, connected with what one concretely does; and approach aspects, pertaining to how the persons involved relate to each other and to the process. In analyzing the LoP- interviews carried out with use of the tools developed – enabling different processes and aspects of these to be analyzed – I find marked individual differences in the patterns of different aspects of the processes involved. The width of the event space and of the space of contemporaries on the part both of the teachers and of the politicians were found to vary considerably. A conclusion drawn is that further development of the tools created would be worthwhile. It also seems possible to apply these tools to other areas, such as those of the scientific community with its research processes and of the political community with its steering processes.

Predicting post-training reactions from pre-training attitudes

Adomaityte, Aurelija 06 1900 (has links)
As training and development programs have become one of the most essential elements for organizations, the question rises of what influences training effectiveness. Recently training motivation has been considered as the key determinant. Thus, the objectives of this particular study were to examine if training motivation correlates well with its antecedents and its outcomes as well as to see if training motivation plays a mediator role in predicting the outcomes of training. Three pre-training variables were chosen for this study: general attitude toward training, training self-efficacy, and career planning. Immediate trainees’ reactions were chosen as a post-training variable. A total of 152 employees from a large Quebecois company participated in the present study by filling out one questionnaire before training and one after. The results of this study evidenced that training motivation can be predicted from general attitude toward training, training self-efficacy and career planning. Moreover, training motivation was shown to be the best predictor of trainees’ reactions. Our results also showed that training motivation fully mediates the relationship between training self-efficacy and trainees’ reactions and partially mediates the relationship between general attitude toward training and trainees’ reactions, but only partially. Mediation effect of training motivation was not found between career planning and trainees’ reactions. Additionally, this study discovered that new employees differ from permanent staff in their pre-training attitudes and post-training reactions. The outcomes of the present study are discussed, some theoretical implications are commented and practical implications for the companies are suggested.

Clinical training as double bind: explicit and implicit contexts of learning

Lloyd, Nina 11 1900 (has links)
This study explores trainee psychotherapists' experiences of double bind situations and inconsistency between explicit and implicit contexts of training. The epistemological foundations of this text are postmodern, social constructionist and ecosystemic. A review of the relevant literature is presented, which includes aspects such as explicit and implicit contexts, double bind and experiences of trainees in training. This is followed by an account of the qualitative research approach adopted, namely, discourse analysis. Themes that are extracted from the text of the transcribed interviews are assumed to reflect discourses in training and the broader societal contexts in which trainees find themselves. These discourses are seen to inform trainees' constructions of their experiences in training. The findings of the analysis are found to concur with the initial hypotheses of this dissertation, as well as with findings in the literature. Recommendations for future research are offered. / Psychology / M.A. (Clinical Psychology)

Talking sticks and BMW's: ritual, power and authority in a psychotherapy training placement

Jansen, Shahieda 01 January 2002 (has links)
This study explores trainees' experiences of power dynamics within a ritualised training context, with reference to the three major aspects of the study: training, ritual and power. The psychotherapeutic training took place at Agape, a community-based counselling service in Mamelodi, whose theoretical approach to training included a mixture of postmodern, ecosystemic and African traditions. A substantial literature survey examines the major concepts and issues related to the research subject, such as psychotherapeutic training approaches, the philosophies and theories that may inform training procedures, ritual practices in psychotherapy, and organisational and power aspects of psychotherapeutic training. The research process was executed using the qualitative, interpretive research methodology. A sample of six of the trainees who had completed their training at this placement was interviewed, and two of the trainers. The researcher's reflections on her own training experiences are woven into the material. Using the interview technique and through asking a series of open-ended questions, the researcher obtained an account of the subjective, sacralised training interactions at Agape. Themes were identified that had emerged during the interview process. In brief, the themes referred to trainees' theoretical and practical experiences in the training placement, how they made sense of the sacralised therapeutic experiences, and comments on their relationship with trainers and fellow trainees. The most common theme that emerged was that of power. The end product of this study portrays the trainees' understandings of power within a sacralised psychotherapeutic context and their responses to this. This study makes explicit the links between ritualisation and power within an evaluative psychotherapeutic training context, and the consequences of this for training. / Psychology / M.A. (Clinical Psychology)

Physical contact between therapist and patient and the frequency of the assistance involves the development of a peculiar type of interpersonal relationship. This research aimed to grasp, phenomenologically, the experience of the physical therapy trainees regarding their relationship with outpatients at a university clinic. It is an exploratory qualitative research, phenomenologically inspired. Eight individual encounters were carried out with undergraduates who are in their seventh, ninth and tenth semesters. After each of the encounters, the researcher wrote a first-person narrative, based on her impressions of the meaning of the lived experience of the participants. A narrative synthesis was then developed in order to capture the meaning of the experience as such. The analysis made it possible to conclude that trainees strive to offer a treatment that includes, not only technique but also attitudes of respect, warmth and welcome. Caring for patients with neurological problems, especially those involving progressive degeneration, is signified by the interns as unrewarding since recovery is impossible and verbal communication is difficult. They also feel distressed, as they perceive themselves emotionally involved with the patients, despite the attempt to maintain a strictly professional approach. On the other hand, in a broad way, this relationship is referred to as an opportunity for new learnings and psychological maturity with a potential for growth both in personal and professional life.

Evaluating a Safe Space Training for School Counselors and Trainees Using a Randomized Control Group Design

Byrd, Rebekah J., Hays, Danica 06 September 2017 (has links)
School counselors need to advocate and act as an ally for all students. Safe Space, a training designed to facilitate competency for working with and serving LGBTQ youth (i.e., LGBTQ competency), has received increased attention in the field of school counseling. However, limited empirical support exists for training interventions such as Safe Space, with only one study to date examining its effectiveness for graduate psychology students (see Finkel, Storaasli, Bandele, & Schaefer, 2003). This study used a randomized pretest-posttest control group design to evaluate and examine the impact of Safe Space training on competency levels of a sample of school counselors/school counselor trainees and to explore the relationship between LGBTQ competency and awareness of sexism and heterosexism.
