The self is to be told : Gender, identity and the telling of stories in Jackie Kay's Trumpet

Englund Örn, Julia January 2010 (has links)
Notable in Jackie Kay’s Trumpet, a story about a jazz musician that all his adult life pretended to be a man, is the many voices that bring their stories to the novel. The voices give life to Joss Moody, who recently passed away, by telling stories of and about him. This essay concerns gender and identity in the light of narration: how stories can be considered the basis of existence. Drawing from five statements regarding narratology and the theories on identity of Judith Butler I will present my claim that all that is needed to create one’s identity are stories that are told. Joss Moody’s life moves beyond binary thinking and in consequence his story and the discussion of it will do so as well. This essay deals with Joss’s family, Millie and Colman, and their stories in the aftermath of Joss’s death as well as journalist Sophie Stones who wants to create her own story of Joss’s life to sell. Together they all bring their perspective on ideas of narration and identity.

The Trumpet and Cornet Works of Emile Joseph Trognee (1868-1942): Musical and Pedagogical Contributions

Scheusner, Geoffrey Herther January 2009 (has links)
Emile Joseph Trognee's career took place not only during a time unsurpassed with regards to the musical and constructional developments of the trumpet, but also in the highly important and evolving musical environment of Imperial and Soviet Russia. As a result of an investigation of their inherent musical qualities, this document will establish how Emile Trognee's works are representative of European trumpet and cornet pedagogical and musical trends of the early 20th century. Through formal, thematic and harmonic analysis of these works, the key pedagogical and stylistic features are identified and discussed as consistent or unique to those of the period. Preceding that analysis and critical to an understanding of the contextual relevance of this material is a summation of the important 19th and early 20th century musical developments that influenced the instruction and use of the trumpet and cornet in Russia and Europe. It is hoped that modern study of the challenging works of that period will benefit from a better understanding of the performance and educational practices of those who were present at their inception or particularly adept in their performance.

Paul Hindemith's use of the trumpet in the Kammermusik works

Wiley, Norman Keith January 1991 (has links)
This study investigates the nature and extent of Paul Hindemith's use of the trumpet or cornet in the seven works which comprise the Kammermusiken. The trumpet or cornet is assessed on the basis of technical and musical criteria with regard for its functional responsibilities within the context of each work. Specific evaluative criteria include pitch range, ensemble placement, melodic motion, articulation, rhythmic character, dynamic range, and special effects. Functional responsibilities are generally identified as either thematic or supportive on the basis of an examination of the musical setting in which the trumpet or cornet is found. Thematic roles are further distinguished, where appropriate, as either primary or secondary. Supportive responsibilities are identified as either harmonic, harmonic and rhythmic, or harmonic and structural. Each of the seven works is addressed in a separate chapter. General information concerning instrumentation, expressive character, and specific comment regarding unique stylistic features is provided. A technical and musical assessment of the utilization of the trumpet or cornet is included. Performance demands and interpretative concerns are addressed, as well. A summary of the trumpet's or cornet's use in the work concludes each chapter while a comprehensive comparison of its use in all seven compositions is provided in the final chapter. Representative musical excerpts from the score are provided in separate appendixes. The trumpet serves almost equally in thematic and supportive roles and is generally called upon to perform in a predominantly marked or martial manner. While all passages are well within the normal performance capabilities of the professional or advanced collegiate player, an assured technical facility is required in order to accommodate the variety of intervallic combinations and contrasting melodic motion which typifies Hindemith's harmonic language. / School of Music
