The trumpet was one of the wind instruments Hindemith used frequently in his chamber music, and he employed it prominently in five works from 1925 to 1954. These works are the Sonate fur Trompete (1939), the Konzert fur Trompete in B und Fagott mit Streichorchester (1954), Drei Stucke (19251 the Septett fur Blasinstrumente (1949), and "Morgenmusik," from the collection Plöner Musiktag (1932). This study examines and compares Hindemith's writing for the trumpet in these selected works, noting features in his use of the instrument which determine the applicability of the works to the Gebrauchsmusik concept.

A listing of all known trumpet and percussion duos is included. An exploration of the development of the Wilder Duo and a listing of all known trumpet and marimba duos is also included. There are analyses of works by Gordon Stout, Paul Turok and Alec Wilder. These analyses examine sound, form, harmony, melody and rhythm for each piece. Musical illustrations are included. These analyses are divided into chapters. Each chapter begins with a short biography of each composer. A short description of each work is also given. Summaries are included at the end of each analytical chapter.

This dissertation consists of four programs: one lecture recital, two recitals for solo trumpet, and one in combination with other instruments and voices. The lecture was an exploration of the contents of Modo per Imparare a Sonare di Tromba, by Girolamo Fantini, published in 16358. Fantini, who was also a trumpet player, included in his volume a wide variety of music for the natural trumpet. In addition to military signals and fanfares, the book contains exercises for developing technical ability on the trumpet, a large number of dance pieces with and without accompaniment, duets for two trumpets, and sonatas for trumpet and keyboard.

The lecture was given on April 21, 1980. The problem with which this investigation is concerned is that of gathering information on the composer Johann Hummel, the performer Anton Weidinger, the keyed trumpet, for which the concerto was written, the concerto itself, and its ornaments, and in determining the correct performance practices of the ornaments. Sources written in the middle to late eighteenth century and from the first third of the nineteenth century gave valuable insight into the facts and attitudes concerning the composer, the performer, the instrument, and the concerto in question. Other information came from present day authorities writing in texts, periodicals, and reference works.

An examination of the influence of selected works of Franz Schmidt on the Concerto for Trumpet and Orchestra and the Sonata for Trumpet and Piano by Karl Pilss.

The Concerto for Trumpet and Orchestra and the Sonata for Trumpet and Piano by Karl Pilss were written in 1934 and 1935, respectively. They are examples for solo trumpet of the late German Romantic style of melody, harmony, form and structure. Musicians and audience often overlook composer Karl Pilss outside his native Vienna. His ties to the Trompeterchor der Stadt Wien and the National Socialist Party during the years preceding the Second World War have limited widespread acceptance of this composer. Pilss' output includes concertos for trumpet, horn, bass trombone, and piano, sonatas for trumpet, violin, and oboe, wind quintets and octets, piano pieces, choral works, and numerous large and small brass works. Pilss' teacher Franz Schmidt is more widely known. His four symphonies provide examples of post-Romanticism at the beginning of the twentieth century. His characteristic use of melody, harmony, form and structure is in the mold of Richard Strauss. Schmidt did not write any works for solo trumpet. However, his Symphony No. 4 begins and ends with extended passages for solo trumpet. Pilss inherited and adopted many of Schmidt's melodic, harmonic and formal traits. These can be clearly heard in his Concerto for Trumpet and Orchestra and the Sonata for Trumpet and Piano. This work discusses in detail the musical and compositional connection between Karl Pilss and his teacher, Franz Schmidt. Musical elements of melody, harmony, form and structure are used to illustrate the close connection between pupil and mentor. The use of the characteristic "Schmidt chord" in Pilss' works cements the link between the two composers. The Concerto for Trumpet and Orchestra and the Sonata for Trumpet and Piano deserve wider acceptance on the basis of their musical merit and as unique examples of the late German Romantic style for solo trumpet.

The early trumpet arias by Giovanni Legrenzi and Carlo Pallavicino are important works in the trumpet repertoire that have remained relatively unpublished and unstudied. This dissertation will look at the history of the trumpet in opera, discuss the development of the trumpet aria, and provide examples of how to approach the performance of the trumpet aria. Through study and performance of the early trumpet arias by Legrenzi and Pallavicino, trumpet soloists will be able to learn the necessary techniques to collaborate with singers and perform all trumpet arias.

The study establishes the influence of jazz upon Henri Tomasi, André Jolivet, Eugène Bozza and Jacques Ibert in their works for solo trumpet. Idiomatic elements of jazz style are identified and discussed in terms of performance practice considerations for modern-day trumpeters.

Thesis (MMus) -- Stellenbosch University, 2002. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study attempts to address some shortcomings of brass tuition in South Africa. It is unique in its approach in concentrating on musicians from previously disadvantaged communities, although the content of the document can be equally successfully applied to brass teaching in general. The study differs from any previous written material on this topic in that it takes the background of the previously disadvantaged educator and learner into consideration. It therefore does not assume that the learner can read music or that the educator has any formal training. The challenge is thus to write a document to provide the educator and learner with basic information in a medium that does not take anything for granted and that also offers some practical guidance in already existing projects. As a starting point a background is offered to produce a general overview of the problem. My research has convinced me that a document which consists only of a written text would not be sufficient to guide the educator and learner. I have therefore set out to accompany the text document with a practical trumpet manual. South African melodies were predominantly used as study material. This offers the opportunity to all South African learners from different cultural backgrounds to identify with the study material. My literature review includes a selection of the most commonly used beginner brass manuals in South Africa.
