Mortenson / This Master’s report contains biographical, historical, and theoretical analysis as well as stylistic and technical considerations for the four works performed for the author’s Master’s recital on April 29th, 2009. The works are Handel’s aria “Let the Bright Seraphim” from Samson, Franz Joseph Haydn’s Concerto for Trumpet in E Flat Major, Karl Jenkins’ Salm o Dewi Sant, and Erik Morales’ Concerto for Trumpet in C and Piano.

The pieces included in this report are Joseph Turrin’s Caprice, Vincent Persichetti’s The Hollow Men, Alexander Goedicke’s Concert Etude, and Eric Ewazen’s Sonata for Trumpet and Piano as well as his Concert Fanfare for Six Trumpets.

abstract: This document accompanies new recordings of four recent sonatas for trumpet and piano. The project’s objective is to promote these works, while providing a comprehensive resource for potential performers. The four sonatas were selected based on their appeal to modern audiences. Composers Brendan Collins, Luis Engelke, William Rowson, and Christoph Nils Thompson each represents a different country, and they offer significant contributions to the trumpet repertoire. Each sonata expertly features the trumpet by highlighting its lyricism, virtuosity, and ability to cross genres. The accompanying document draws upon interviews with the four composers, which reveal insights into the compositional process and provide details that performers will find useful. This document also offers in-depth musical descriptions, allowing performers to enhance their understanding of each sonata. The principal component of the document is the performer’s guide: Advice is presented directly to the trumpet player that has been garnered from the composers’ interviews, study of the music, and the author’s thoughts on preparing the music. To help other young musicians better comprehend the recording process, the author’s own experience is detailed. Ultimately, this document provides a window into the lifespan of the four sonatas; from their initial composition through the various stages of studying and rehearsing, culminating with the experience of recording these works for the first time. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Music 2019

<p>Syftet med denna uppsats är att undersöka hur not- och gehörsspelsmetodik ser ut och används på olika kulturskolor idag, samt utforska eventuella skillnader i metodikval mellan elgitarr- och trumpetpedagoger. Uppsatsen bygger på kvalitativa intervjuer med fyra instrumentallärare på olika kulturskolor i Sverige, två elgitarr- och två trumpetpedagoger i olika åldrar. Resultatet visar att det är större skillnader i metodikval mellan de yngre och de äldre lärarna än mellan elgitarr- och trumpetlärarna. Samtliga lärare menar att gehöret är det viktigaste elementet i samspel medan noter anses särskilt betydelsefullt för de elever som vill studera vidare inom musikområdet. Undersökningen visar att de båda metoderna berikar elevernas musikaliska utveckling på varsitt sätt och därför kan de fungera som komplementära metoder i instrumentalundervisningen.</p>

Fyra lärare, i olika åldrar och med olika utbildning, deltar i studien. </p><p>Analysen av resultatet genererade en modell som presenteras i diskussionen. Det visade sig bland annat att lärarnas arbetssätt och innehållet i undervisningen var beroende av när man lät musiken komma in i bilden. De olika lärarna kunde också ”delas in” i två undervisningstraditioner vilka skulle kunna betecknas som skapande och återskapande. </p></p>

The purpose of this essay is to encourage the study and performance of trumpet concertos written by notable contemporary composers. The essay focuses on two outstanding trumpet concertos composed in recent years: Lowell Liebermann’s Concerto for Trumpet and Orchestra, op. 64 and John Williams’ Concerto for Trumpet and Orchestra. The essay specifically provides the following information: 1) a concise history of the concerto for trumpet, 2) a short biography of Lowell Liebermann and John Williams, 3) the history of Liebermann’s and Williams’ concertos for trumpet, 4) musical analysis of both concertos, 5) a soloist’s practice and performance guide to both works, and 6) a short list of other contemporary trumpet concertos worthy of study. Both Liebermann’s and Williams’ trumpet concertos acknowledge established musical convention, and neither uses any experimental performance techniques. However, both works are written in their own distinctive harmonic language, and each provides its own unique modifications to traditional forms and melodic shapes. Hopefully, this essay will advance the status of Liebermann’s Trumpet Concerto and Williams’ Trumpet Concerto in the history of the trumpet concerto genre and serve as a resource for those who wish to research, study, and perform Liebermann’s Concerto, Williams’ Concerto, or other contemporary trumpet concertos.
