Hettasch, Georg 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MEng.)-- University of Stellenbosch, 1992. 140 leaves on single pages, preliminary pages i-xi and numbered pages 1-113. Includes bibliography. Digitized at 600 dpi grayscale to pdf format (OCR),using an Bizhub 250 Konica Minolta Scanner and at 300 dpi grayscale to pdf format (OCR), using a Hp Scanjet 8250 Scanner. / Thesis (MEng (Mechanical and Mechatronic Engineering))--University of Stellenbosch, 1992 / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The large variety of turbo-machinery blade root geometries in use in industry prompted the question if a optimum geometry could be found. An optimum blade root was defined as a root with a practical geometry which, when loaded, returns the minimum fillet stress concentration factor. A literature survey on the subject provided guidelines but very little real data to work from. An initial optimization was carried out using a formula developed by Heywood to determine loaded projection fillet stresses. The method was found to produce unsatisfactory results, prompting a photoelastic investigation. This experimental optimization was conducted in two stages. A single tang defined load stage and a single tang in-rotor stage which modeled the practical situation. The defined load stage was undertaken in three phases. The first phase was a preliminary investigation, the second phase was a parameter optimization and the third phase was a geometric optimization based on a material utilization optimization. This material optimization approach produced good results. From these experiments a practical optimum geometry was defined. A mathematical model which predicts the fillet stress concentration factor for a given root geometry is presented. The effect of expanding the single tang optimum to a three tang root was examined. Hierdie eksperimentele optimering is in twee stappe onderneem.

Turbo Equalization for OFDM over the Doubly-Spread Channel using Nonlinear Programming

Iltis, Ronald A. 10 1900 (has links)
ITC/USA 2011 Conference Proceedings / The Forty-Seventh Annual International Telemetering Conference and Technical Exhibition / October 24-27, 2011 / Bally's Las Vegas, Las Vegas, Nevada / OFDM has become the preferred modulation format for a wide range of wireless networks including 802.11g, 802.16e (WiMAX) and 4G LTE. For multipath channels which are time-invariant during an OFDM symbol duration, near-optimal demodulation is achieved using the FFT followed by scalar equalization. However, demodulating OFDM on the doubly-spread channel remains a challenging problem, as time-variations within a symbol generate intercarrier interference. Furthermore, demodulation and channel estimation must be effectively combined with decoding of the LDPC code in the 4G-type system considered here. This paper presents a new Turbo Equalization (TEQ) decoder, detector and channel estimator for OFDM on the doubly-spread channel based on nonlinear programming. We combine the Penalty Gradient Projection TEQ with a MMSE-type channel estimator (PGP-TEQ) that is shown to yield a convergent algorithm. Simulation results are presented comparing conventional MMSE TEQ using the Sum Product Algorithm (MMSE-SPA-TEQ) with the new PGP-TEQ for doubly-spread channels.

Andersson, Conny January 2015 (has links)
This thesis covers the reconstruction and the redesign of the modeling library VehProLib,which is constructed in the modeling language Modelica with help of the modeling toolWolfram SystemModeler. The design choices are discussed and implemented. This thesisalso includes the implementation of a turbocharger package and an initial study of the justificationof the ideal gas law in vehicle modeling. The study is made with help of Van derWaals equation of states as a reference of non-ideal gas model. It will be shown that for themean-value-engine-model, the usage of ideal gas law is justified.

Energy efficient design of an adaptive switching algorithm for the iterative-MIMO receiver

Mohd Tadza, Noor Zahrinah Binti January 2015 (has links)
An efficient design dedicated for iterative-multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) receiver systems is now imperative in our world since data demands are increasing tremendously in wireless networks. This puts a massive burden on the signal processing power especially in small receiver systems where power sources are often shared or limited. This thesis proposes an attractive solution to both the wireless signal processing and the architectural implementation design sides of the problem. A novel algorithm, dubbed the Adaptive Switching Algorithm, is proven to not only save more than a third of the energy consumption in the algorithmic design, but is also able to achieve an energy reduction of more than 50% in terms of processing power when the design is mapped onto state-of-the-art programmable hardware. Simulations are based in MatlabTM using the Monte Carlo approach, where multiple additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) and Rayleigh fading channels for both fast and slow fading environments were investigated. The software selects the appropriate detection algorithm depending on the current channel conditions. The design for the hardware is based on the latest field programmable gate arrays (FPGA) hardware from Xilinx R , specifically the Virtex-5 and Virtex-7 chipsets. They were chosen during the experimental phase to verify the results in order to examine trends for energy consumption in the proposed algorithm design. Savings come from dynamic allocation of the hardware resources by implementing power minimization techniques depending on the processing requirements of the system. Having demonstrated the feasibility of the algorithm in controlled environments, realistic channel conditions were simulated using spatially correlated MIMO channels to test the algorithm’s readiness for real-world deployment. The proposed algorithm is placed in both the MIMO detector and the iterative-decoder blocks of the receiver. When the final full receiver design setup is implemented, it shows that the key to energy saving lies in the fact that both software and hardware components of the Adaptive Switching Algorithm adopt adaptivity in the respective designs. The detector saves energy by selecting suitable detection schemes while the decoder provides adaptivity by limiting the number of decoding iterations, both of which are updated in real-time. The overall receiver can achieve more than 70% energy savings in comparison to state-of-the-art iterative-MIMO receivers and thus it can be concluded that this level of ‘intelligence’ is an important direction towards a more efficient iterative-MIMO receiver designs in the future.

An Assessment of Available Software Defined Radio Platforms Utilizing Iterative Algorithms

Ferreira, Nathan 04 May 2015 (has links)
As the demands of communication systems have become more complex and varied, software defined radios (SDR) have become increasingly popular. With behavior that can be modified in software, SDR's provide a highly flexible and configurable development environment. Despite its programmable behavior, the maximum performance of an SDR is still rooted in its hardware. This limitation and the desire for the use of SDRs in different applications have led to the rise of various pieces of hardware to serve as SDR platforms. These platforms vary in aspects such as their performance limitations, implementation details, and cost. In this way the choice of SDR platform is not solely based on the cost of the hardware and should be closely examined before making a final decision. This thesis examines the various SDR platform families available on the market today and compares the advantages and disadvantages present for each during development. As many different types of hardware can be considered an option to successfully implement an SDR, this thesis specifically focuses on general purpose processors, system on chip, and field-programmable gate array implementations. When examining these SDR families, the Freescale BSC9131 is chosen to represent the system on chip implementation, while the Nutaq PicoSDR 2x2 Embedded with Virtex6 SX315 is used for the remaining two options. In order to test each of these platforms, a Viterbi algorithm is implemented on each and the performance measured. This performance measurement considers both how quickly the platform is able to perform the decoding, as well as its bit error rate performance in order to ascertain the implementations' accuracy. Other factors considered when comparing each platform are its flexibility and the amount of options available for development. After testing, the details of each implementation are discussed and guidelines for choosing a platform are suggested.

Chaggara, Ridha 12 1900 (has links) (PDF)

Mean Value Modelling of a Diesel Engine with Turbo Compound / Medelvärdesmodellering av en dieselmotor med kraftturbin

Flärdh, Oscar, Gustafson, Manne January 2003 (has links)

Over the last years, the emission and on board diagnostics legislations for heavy duty trucks are getting more and more strict. An accurate engine model that is possible to execute in the engine control system enables both better diagnosis and lowered emissions by better control strategies.

The objective of this thesis is to extend an existing mean value diesel engine model, to include turbo compound. The model should be physical, accurate, modular and it should be possible to execute in real time. The calibration procedure should be systematic, with some degree of automatization.

Four different turbo compound models have been evaluated and two models were selected for further evaluation by integration with the existing model. The extended model showed to be quite insensitive to small errors in the compound turbine speed and hence, the small difference in accuracy of the tested models did not affect the other output signals significantly. The extended models had better accuracy and could be executed with longer step length than the existing model, despite that more complexity were added to the model. For example, the mean error of the intake manifold pressure at mixed driving was approximately 3.0%, compared to 5.8% for the existing model. The reasons for the improvements are probably the good performance of the added submodels and the systematic and partly automatized calibration procedure including optimization.
