Exploring consumers’ procedural knowledge and perception of genetically modified (GM) food products and the factors that influence their purchasing decisionVan Zuydam, Sone Corne 01 1900 (has links)
Abstracts in English, Xhosa and Zulu / This quantitative study explores procedural knowledge, perception of GM food products and
factors that influence the purchasing decision of 326 respondents by means of a
questionnaire. Recruitment of the respondents was done by approaching various businesses
and Schools in Mooi River to which the questionnaire was distributed to their respective
personnel. The respondents’ showed that they were not very knowledgeable of GM food
products, but were not particularly ignorant either. The results also showed that they did not
look for any GM-related information from various sources and believed that scientists were
the most credible source of GM-related information. In general, the respondents did not
perceive GM food products as having any nutritional benefits; did not perceive GM food
products to provide an economic benefit, except to increase food supplies by boosting the
economy through the implementation of biotechnology; and perceived longer shelf life as a
beneficial GM food product quality. The respondents also feared the susceptibility to cancer,
toxicity, allergic reactions, alterations in kidney functions, immune malfunction and especially
infertility problems after consumption of GM food products. The respondents did not show
particular fear towards the ethical aspects of GM food products, except in that GM food
products are produced in an unethical manner. Fear was also not shown towards the
consumption aspects of GM food products including scepticism towards the safety GM food
products and possible threats to living things. The respondents indicated that increased food
supplies through the production of GM food products, possible cancer development after
consumption, allergenicity, reduced usage of pesticides and harmful effect on the environment
were GM-related factors that would influence their purchasing decision of GM food products.
The general GM-related barriers that influenced the respondents purchasing decision of GM
food products included not looking out for GM food products in particular, knowing too little
about GM food products, not having a particular interest in GM food products and never
knowing if a product contains a GM component or not. / Esi sifundo, nesiqhutywa ngokuqwalasela amanani ezenzeko, saphanda ngolwazi lwendlela

Information needs and seeking behaviour of doctoral students using smartphones and tablets for learning : a case of the University of Cape Coast, GhanaBarfi, Kwaku Anhwere 11 1900 (has links)
Text in English, with abstracts and keywords in English, Zulu and Afrikaans / This qualitative study investigated the information needs and information-seeking behaviour of doctoral students who use smartphones or tablets for learning. Fifteen doctoral students who are
registered at the University of Cape Coast were interviewed. Ellis’s (1989) model of information-seeking behaviour guided the study and supported the researcher in developing a model that could be used to acquire an understanding of how mobile technologies influence
information needs and information-seeking behaviour. Two contexts influence the participants’ information needs and information-seeking behaviour, namely, the academic context and their everyday life contexts. The interplay between the elements of the context in which participants find themselves and their mental structures appear to influence their information needs and information-seeking behaviour. Most of the participating students do not seem to have the
required information literacy skills to seek information in an online environment. The contextual elements that appear to influence the participants’ information needs and searching behaviour
include situations in action, academic tasks and information resources. The ability to connect to the Internet and retrieve online sources of information proved to be important. The participants use the mobile devices to retrieve information from the Internet and in some instances from the university library’s resources. Certain device-related characteristics, such as small screens, limited memory space and short battery lifespan, seem to affect the usefulness of mobile devices
for information-seeking purposes. The cost of data and an inability to connect to the Internet, due to disruptions in network signals and a lack of Wi-Fi infrastructure, also curb the use of mobile devices. WhatsApp not only provides the participants with the means to share
information and discuss their academic tasks, but it also makes collaboration and group work possible. Some of the students lack the required information literacy skills to make optimal use
of the library’s resources. Therefore, it would be prudent for the university to include information literacy skills training in the curricula for all levels of study. This requirement should also include doctoral students who have not previously completed an information literacy
course. / Lolu cwaningo lohlelo olugxile kwingxoxo beluphenya izidingo zolwazi kanye nezenzo zokucinga ulwazi lwabafundi abakwiziqu zesibili abasebenzisa ama-smartphones noma ama-tablets ukufunda.
Exploring the indigenous religious identities of African adolescents in selected South African secondary schoolsThamaga, Mangakane Rebecca M. 10 1900 (has links)
This study was undertaken to explore the indigenous religious identities of African adolescents in selected secondary schools in Mpumalanga province, South Africa. The empirical investigation used a qualitative, phenomenological collective case study design. The framework for the study was provided by constructivist theory and African indigenous knowledge and was justified by an extensive literature study. Purposive sampling was used to select forty-two learners from Grades 8 to 11, thirty- three of whom were from African initiated churches, eight belonged to various Christian denominations and one was an atheist. The most significant finding was that the indigenous religious identities of adolescents are not adequately accommodated and supported in South African secondary schools. Accordingly, recommendations were made for affirming adolescents’ indigenous religious identities in the implementation of RE in the classroom. / Lolu cwaningo lwenziwa ngenhloso yokuhlaziya nokuhlolisisa izimo nezici zobunjalo bentsha empisholo esesigabeni sokuthomba (adolescents) elandela izinkolo zomdabu noma zendabuko efunda ezikoleni ezingamasekhondari ezikhethiweyo esifundazweni saseMpumalanga, eNingizimu Afrika. Adopting green information and communication technology: barriers for South African small and medium enterprisesBok, Elizma Sharee 12 1900 (has links)
Abstracts in English, Afrikaans and Xhosa / Green information and communication technology (ICT) is viewed as a pioneering initiative that plays a key role in reducing the negative impact of ICT on the environment. The research problem of the study was the low green ICT adoption rate in South African small and medium enterprises (SMEs). The primary objective was to identify the most prominent barriers resulting in this low adoption rate. The first secondary objective was to determine the barrier with the strongest underlying correlation resulting in the low adoption rate of green ICT in South African SMEs. The second secondary objective was to recommend strategies on how to improve the adoption rate of green ICT. A self-administered questionnaire was used to collect data through electronic and paper-based surveys. A census study was conducted among owners and managers of high-technology-based SMEs located in Gauteng. An exploratory factor analysis was employed to identify the barriers resulting in the low adoption rate of green ICT. These barriers were found to be a lack of funding, awareness, legislation, skills, and knowledge based on complexity and uncertainty. A lack of funding was identified as the most prominent barrier to adopting low green ICT. Although five constructs were discussed in the literature, the overall results presented six components, with the construct of knowledge being made up of two parts – complexity and uncertainty. This study recommends that SMEs align green ICT initiatives with their strategic goals and that government consider more adequate support structures for SMEs. The study confirmed a low green ICT adoption rate in South African SMEs, and more research is required to explore the impact of each of the factors above on the environment. / Met groen inligting-en-kommunikasietegnologie (IKT) word baanbrekerswerk gedoen om die nadelige uitwerking wat IKT op die omgewing het, te verklein. A best practice framework for visitor information centres in Gauteng Province, South AfricaChikati, Shybow 04 1900 (has links)
Abstracts in English, Zulu and Afrikaans / Globally, Visitor Information Centres are increasingly recognised touchpoints contributing to the success
of tourism destinations. In Gauteng, South Africa, their numbers continue to decline. The service level of
these remaining VICs differ across and fall below expectation. Furthermore, most models of operation
are obsolete, with these centres having minimal exposure to best practices. Limited research focuses on
the supply side, namely the staffing and management of centres.
The study focuses on Gauteng VICs and the best practices that could improve future effectiveness. An
exploratory design was followed which commenced with a concise review of best practice literature,
global case studies and examples on the operation of effective VICs. An empirical study then reported
on the opinions of 25 VIC staff and eight managers from eight Gauteng VICs regarding the current
situation and future needs. A two-tiered approach was used to gather data via two custom-designed
surveys with Gauteng VIC staff and managers respectively. A snowball sample of 25 staff members and
a purposive sample of eight key informants were obtained. Data were analysed quantitatively using SPSS
and qualitatively using thematic content analysis; and presented in three parts. The literature, the
findings and the researcher’s recommendations culminate in a best practice framework for Gauteng
VICs. The framework advocates for an integration of traditional and new media services and platforms
in the dissemination of tourism information based on the funding available to a particular VIC. It is
envisaged that if managers implement the best practice framework, it could avert further decline in the
number of VICs. Moreover, it could improve their effectiveness in meeting the needs of the
technologically-savvy and the traditional visitor, thereby ushering the Gauteng VICs into the 21st century. / Emhlabeni jikelele, izikhungo zolwazi zabavakashi (VICs) ziya ngokuya ziqashelwa njengamaphuzu

A phenomenological study of an emerging financial value ecosystem: based on distributed ledger technology and novel peer to eer game structure / Ucwaningo olugxile ezigamekweni okuhlangatshezwane nazo maqondana neekhosistimu efufusayo yobunani-mali: olusekelwe phezu kwe-distributed ledger technology Kanye ne-novel peer-to-peer game structureCrafford, Francois 02 1900 (has links)
Abstracts in English, Zulu and Xhosa / The central research issue in this study is the third morphing of economies due to the externally available intelligent building blocks of technology. More specifically, it is anticipated that the widespread use of distributed ledger technology will transform the workings of organisations to such a degree that they will cease to exist in their current form. Hence, the use of distributed ledger technology is not merely a tame management problem; it poses a wicked strategic problem.
Furthermore, natural explanations add to the confusion in relation to what managers should do with distributed ledger technology. A transcendental phenomenological attitude is required to transcend the multitude of natural explanations. Phenomenology is both the philosophy and method employed in this study, which questions what human engagement in the world is about. More specifically in this study engagement with distributed ledger technology. This study closes this gap in knowledge by giving an accurate description of the essence of the distributed value ecosystem phenomenon.
The study makes a contribution to more coherent and fundamental understanding the essences of the distributed value ecosystem phenomenon is the nature of the relationship patterns that participants hold to distributed ledger technology.
The central factual finding is the nature and pattern of these relationships is transactional and circular.
The pattern preferred by most organisations is the bounded binary transactional pattern. Organisations seek primarily to have power over the socially complex aspects in transacting. However, the bounded binary transactional pattern may become an unbalanced and unfair value-subtract relationship over time. The response to unbalanced binary bounded value relationships is the unbounded transactional pattern, which gives participants greater autonomy and privacy pseudonymity, but not the transparency that is essential to transact seamlessly.
The third value relationship pattern and novel idea presented is the folded value relationship pattern in which participants balance conflicts over socially complex aspects in relation to self and others by meeting narrow micro-level near interaction conditions. This is a more folded, novel strategic game that participants can pick. The key implication for society and organisations is that it presents an alternative approach to dealing with conflict in socially complex value relationships. In essence, with the folded transactional pattern, participants seek to trade up value relationships in relation to self and with others, as opposed to making value relationship trade-offs or sacrifices that lead to either compromises in relation to self or dominance over others. However, the practical managerial implication is truly folded value relationship pattern is not easy to create and is rare. / Umbandela ophambili wophando kwesi sifundo kukuzotywa ngokutsha kwesithathu kwezoqoqosho

Communicative strategies used by witnesses of the Leon and Phumaphi Commissions of Enquiry in LesothoMabena, Mamponi Irene 01 1900 (has links)
Text in English with summaries in English, South Sotho and Xhosa / Bibliography: leaves 196-215 / This study explored the communicative strategies which were used by participants who were
called in as witnesses before the Leon Commission and the Phumaphi Commission of Enquiry
in Lesotho in 1998 and 2015 respectively. The study specifically looked into the types of
communicative strategies employed, their linguistic realisations and their conversational
effectiveness in providing required information to the commissions. It further compared the
use of strategies by participants in both commissions. Data for this study was obtained from
twenty-six audio recordings of twenty-six witnesses. The study established that participants
used twelve types of communicative strategies which are classified under the following groups
based on their functional characteristics: conversational category which includes strategies
such as code-switching, fillers, vague language and circumlocution; a grammatical category
that comprises personal pronouns, direct speech, passive voice and questioning; a sociocultural
category that covers strategies such as figurative language, indirect communication, direct
refusal and indirect criticism. The study established that communicative strategies such as
code-switching, fillers, personal pronouns, and direct quoting were conversationally effective
as participants strategically employed them to succinctly express themselves. However,
strategies with concealing attributes such as those found under a sociocultural category and
those under the grammatical category (passive voice and questioning) were considered
conversationally ineffective as they withheld required information from the commissioners.
The study further established that participants of the latter commission were even more
unwilling to reveal information than those of the former, which suggests a growing
unwillingness to share information to commissions of enquiry. / Phuputso ena e hlahlobile maano a puisano a neng a sebediswa ke dipaki ka pela Komishene

The focus of this study was on teacher’s knowledge about environmental education, instructional strategies used and challenges and opportunities experienced when they have to integrate environmental education. The study adopted a qualitative research method, case study design and an interpretative research paradigm. Qualitative data was collected using interviews and lesson observations. Three teachers participated in this study. Pseudonyms were used to protect their identities. A typology approach was utilised to analyse data based on the research questions, themes, conceptual framework, literature review and the personal experience of the researcher. All data collected was analysed and interpreted as a single case using. The study revealed that environmental education is not integrated effectively, teachers who integrate and those that do not integrate encountered challenges and that teachers have inadequate knowledge about the integration of environmental education. Therefore, it is recommended that the school together with teachers introduce continuous environmental education programmes and suggests approaches that can be used to improve their instructional strategies to enable the intergration of environmental education effectively. / Science and Technology Education / M.
