Numerical Evaluation of Pathline Predicates of the Benguela Upwelling SystemNardini, Pascal, Böttinger, Michael, Pogrzeba, Hans, Siegfried, Lydia, Schmidt, Martin, Scheuermann, Gerik 25 January 2019 (has links)
Using simulation data of a regional ocean model, Nardini et al. applied pathline predicates for a detailed post-hoc analysis of the Benguela upwelling system. In this work, we evaluate the accuracy of this technique. Using different temporal samplings, we aim at finding minimum requirements for the temporal resolution of the flow data in the context of retroactive particle pathline techniques. Besides the flow field, our simulation data contains synthetic tracer fields for different tracer source regions. Using the flow data, dense trajectories are computed to enable deriving ”emulated tracer fields” based on the local ratio of pathline particles originating from tracer source regions to other ones, which can then be compared to the original tracer fields. We find that the emulated tracer concentrations are overestimated in comparison to the original ones. However, the shape of the regions with high tracer concentration can be reproduced.

Variability of turbulent fluxes (momentum, heat and CO2) during Upwelling conditions. A case studyRomán Cascón, Carlos January 2010 (has links)
Measurements of turbulent fluxes (momentum, sensible heat, latent heat and CO2) at two different heights were studied from data of a tower at Ostergarnsholm Island (Baltic Sea) during one week, while calculations using bulk formulations of fluxes were done with measurements in the tower and in two buoys moored at different locations. Different behaviors are found for the different fluxes. Measured latent heat flux shows higher correlation with calculations than measured sensible heat flux. For the CO2 flux, this relation was not found. Also all measured fluxes at the tower agree better with calculations when they are done under unstable conditions, meaning that the tower is better measuring the area where the measurements are taken in the buoys (near the tower). The studied period includes an upwelling and a high horizontal surface heterogeneity was found during most of the periods. It was seen using the comparison between calculated and measured fluxes and also using satellite images of the studied site. The footprint area is the area at some distance upwind from the tower where the surface conditions are influencing the measurements of the flux of some quantity at certain height in the tower, and this footprint area is continuously changing because its highly dependence with the stratification. Since during all the period the stratification was changing from slightly stable to slightly unstable conditions, the surface heterogeneity can also be seen in the variability of measured fluxes at different heights. One important conclusion in the study is that calculations of the fluxes using bulk formulations may not be useful when high variability of different parameters (as sea surface temperature and pCO2w ) is expected, as for example during upwelling situations and near coast, where the phytoplankton can significantly influence the concentration of CO2 at the surface. A wide study is done, including meteorological and oceanographic parameters, fluxes, comparisons, relations with parameters, transfer coefficients, dependences with the stratification and satellite images.

Wind-driven circulation on a shallow, stratified shelfAustin, Jay Alan January 1999 (has links)
Thesis (Ph. D.)--Joint Program in Physical Oceanography (Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences; and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution), February 1999. / Includes bibliographical references (leaves 235-243). / A detailed examination of the development of a deep convection event observed in the Greenland Sea in 1988-89 is carried out through a combination of modeling, scale estimates, and data analysis. We develop a prognostic one-dimensional mixed layer model which is coupled to a thermodynamic ice model. Our model contains a representation of the lowest order boundary layer dynamics and adjustable coupling strengths between the mixed layer, ice, and atmosphere. We find that the model evolution is not very sensitive to the strength of the coupling between the ice and the mixed layer sufficiently far away from the limits of zero and infinite coupling; we interpret this result in physical terms. Further, we derive an analytical expression which provides a scale estimate of the rate of salinification of the mixed layer during the ice-covered preconditioning period as a function of the rate of ice advection. / by Jay Alan Austin. / Ph.D.

The role of oxygen and other environmental variables on survivorship, abundance, and community structure of invertebrate meroplankton of Oregon nearshore coastal watersEerkes-Medrano, Dafne I. 06 January 2013 (has links)
The high productivity of Eastern Boundary Upwelling Ecosystems (EBUE), some of the most productive ecosystems in the globe, is attributed to the nutrient rich waters brought up through upwelling. Climate change scenarios for coastal upwelling systems, predict an intensification of coastal upwelling winds. Associated with intensification in upwelling are biogeochemical changes such as ocean hypoxia and ocean acidification.
In recent years, the California Current System (CCS) has experienced the occurrence of nearshore hypoxia and the novel rise of anoxia. This has been attributed to changes in the intensity of upwelling wind stress. The effects of some of the more severe hypoxia and anoxia events in the CCS have been mass mortality of fish and benthic invertebrates. However, the impacts on zooplankton in this system are not known.
Meroplankton, those organisms which have a planktonic stage for only part of their life cycle, are an important component of zooplankton communities. The larval stage of benthic invertebrates forms an important link between benthic adult communities and planktonic communities. Larvae serve to disperse individuals to new locations and to link populations. They are also food for fish and planktonic invertebrates. This important life stage can spend long periods in the plankton (from days to months) where environmental conditions can affect larval health, subsequent settlement and recruitment success, and juvenile health.
This research assesses the role of hypoxia and larval survivorship, and the relationship between individual abundance and community structure of larvae to environmental factors in the field. In laboratory experiments (Chapter 2), a suite of 10 rocky intertidal invertebrate species from four phyla were exposed to low oxygen conditions representative of the nearshore environment of the Oregon coast. Results revealed a wide range in tolerances from species with little tolerance (e.g. the shore crab Hemigrapsus oregonensis) to species with high tolerance (e.g. the California mussel Mytilus californianus). The differential responses across larvae to chronic hypoxia and anoxia potentially could affect their recruitment success and consequently, the structure and species composition of intertidal communities.
Field studies (Chapter 3 & 4) explore the relationship between environmental variables and larval abundance and community structure. Chapter 3 focuses on broad taxonomic groups, while Chapter 4 focuses on larval decapods in particular. Fine focus was devoted to decapod larvae, due to laboratory findings of heightened sensitivity to hypoxia of decapod crabs. A finding that is also supported in the literature. The goal of field studies was to identify the environmental parameters that structure meroplankton and larval decapod communities and identify which of these parameters play a significant role in influencing larval abundance. A number of environmental variables contributed to meroplankton assemblage structure and larval decapod assemblage structure. These included distance from shore, depth, date, upwelling intensity, dissolved oxygen, and cumulative wind stress. Some of these factors occurred frequently in larval abundance models. In Chapter 3, individual abundance across broad taxonomic groups was most commonly explained by upwelling intensity while in Chapter 4, individual abundance of different decapod species was explained by cumulative wind stress, which is a proxy for upwelling intensity. The prominent role of upwelling related factors in explaining individual abundance is important considering climate change projections of an increased intensification of upwelling winds in EBUE. / Graduation date: 2012 / Access restricted to the OSU Community at author's request from Jan. 6, 2012 - Jan. 6, 2013

In view of increasing environmental awareness and biodiversity conservation, understanding the main forcing mechanism driving biogeochemical cycles in coral reefs and lagoon coastal areas is a priority. We used a 3D coupled 'on-line' physical-biogeochemical model on the New Caledonia lagoon : a hot spot of biodiversity under several forcing from climate to human origin.Interactions between land and lagoon were investigated through the study of an extreme event La Niña (2008) that caused heavy rainfalls and large organic and inorganic inputs in the lagoon.Model results provided a synoptic view of the lagoon biogeochemical-physical response, highlighting that the whole lagoon was impacted by river inputs and stronger hydrodynamics were the chlorophyll-a concentration was almost double. The complex interaction between the ocean and the lagoon was investigated through the modeling of the South Western (SW) wind-driven upwelling. Four austral summers (2005-2008) were simulated and results were found to be in good agreement with measured data reported in previous publications, highlighting that upwelling processes represent strong drivers of the primary production in the SW of NC. A Lagrangian transport analysis showed that oceanic upwelled waters were able to reach the South West lagoon under certain conditions, representing an important issue for larvae recruitment and lagoon enrichment. The 3D coupled on-line biogeochemical-physical model was a robust tool to study such complex and highly variable environment. It could represent a support for decision makers to manage coastal areas as well as for scientists to plan sampling strategy or to analyse cruise data.

Exploring the potential for using deep-sea bamboo corals (Isidella sp.) for paleoceanographic reconstructionsHornung, Jonathan P. 10 June 2011 (has links)
Deep-sea bamboo coral (Isidella sp.) SE000901A from the southern Oregon coast (water depth 1048m) provides a high-resolution record of variability of North Pacific Intermediate Water (NPIW) and carbon rain to the sea floor, related to coastal upwelling, from 1808 to 2000AD. Counting of annual layers in magnesium to calcium (Mg/Ca) variations, measured by electron microprobe analysis, yields a detailed age model that is transferred directly to records of carbon and oxygen isotope ratios (δ¹³C and δ¹⁸O) measured by isotope ratio mass spectrometry and trace element ratios measured by laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS). A significant linear relationship between δ¹³C and δ¹⁸O measured on the carbonate internode of the coral specimen revealed disequilibrium kinetic isotopic variations that depend on calcification rate. The stable isotopic time series are significantly correlated to cadmium to calcium ratios (Cd/Ca) in the carbonate internode, suggesting that cadmium uptake also reflects the rate of calcification. Comparison of phosphorus to calcium ratios (P/Ca) in the carbonate internode to historical records of oxygen concentrations of NPIW suggests that coralline P/Ca is related to the phosphate content of the ambient bottom water, which covaries inversely with oxygen concentration.
Stable carbon and nitrogen isotopic ratios (δ¹³C and δ¹⁵N) were measured on two organic gorgonin nodes of our bamboo coral, but incomplete understanding of the gorgonin growth patterns and the difficulty in translating ages between the proteinaceous node and calcareous internode preclude detailed comparison between organic stable isotopes and the trace element and isotopic composition of the well-dated carbonate proxies.
Based on correlation of the measured properties to historical variations in coastal upwelling, and high-latitude climate variability, we demonstrate the potential and challenges in using deep-sea bamboo corals to extend records of climate variability into the pre-historical past. / Graduation date: 2012

In the context of global contemporary climate change, regional climate analyses are of major interest as they allow accounting for spatial heterogeneity of climate change. Our study provides for an analysis of recent climate changes in Morocco and Mauritania and their nearby Ocean. It focuses on the evolution in the lower layers of the atmosphere, taking into account the thermal conditions (air temperature at 2m), the coastal climate dynamics (sst and upwelling), and atmosphere dynamics made of atmospheric pressures and surface winds. For all the studied meteorological parameters, the variability and inter-annual evolution are analyzed on monthly and annual / seasonal scales.Statistical analyzes based primarily on linear regressions and Hubert's segmentation helped show that the Moroccan-Mauritanian zone has experienced over the past six decades (1950-2008), contrasting climate changes both at the spatial and seasonal scales. The most significant results are hereunder summarized :•A contrasted thermal evolution with a more pronounced warming in Morocco and the Sahara than in Mauritania,•Increase the intensity of the upwelling on the Moroccan coast and decrease on the Mauritanian,•A strong and dominant upward trend in atmospheric pressure, resulting, in particular, in a Mediterrano-Saharan AA strengthening and lower Saharan thermal pressure during summer,•A general downward trend in wind speed, in parallel with a rotation of the compass rose from north to northeast for marine trade winds, and from north to east for the continental trade winds.Hubert’ Segmentation confirmed that the major climatic fluctuations in the Moroccan-Mauritanian area and their nearby ocean occurred during the 1970s. This is true at the level of air temperatures, the upwelling, and SLP, while the disruption that affected the wind speed and the frequency of the main directions of the trade winds occurred between 1960 and 1970. A second period of disruption has been demonstrated by Hubert’s segmentation. It relates to the 1990s in air temperature chronological series and SLP.

While the long-term climatic variability of the Quaternary is relatively well understood today, the causes and processes at the origin of the rapid and brutal climatic variability that characterized the last glacial period (Dansgaard-Oeschger cycles), including meridional and latitudinal heat transfer mechanisms, are still subject to debate. As such, studying the hydrological connection between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean Sea appears particularly appropriate since it illustrates the coupling acting on a double East-West and North-South gradient. It furthermore links subtropical processes and North Atlantic ones. We focused our analysis on sedimentary sequences retrieved around the Strait of Gibraltar, in order to extend the spatial and temporal knowledges about the impact of the high frequency climatic variability of the last 50 000 years in the sector of the eastern subtropical Atlantic and of the western Mediterranean Sea. The methodology of this thesis is based on a multi-proxy compilation coupling micropaleontological (dinocysts and planktonic foraminifera) and geochemical (stable isotopes and alkenones) approaches. We have tested the consistency of the sea-surface paleohydrological changes at inter-and intra-basins scales and tried to characterize the associated migration of the hydrological fronts. Sites of the Portuguese and Moroccan margins, in particular, allowed us to document the impact of the D/O cycles on the intensity of coastal upwelling cells as well as on the dynamics of the MOW, by coupling sea surface signals (temperature, salinity and productivity) to paleointensity of the MOW.
