Solt, Jordan 11 December 2017 (has links)
Each year, lots of pedestrian children get injured by vehicles, in spite of efforts made to improve vehicles and safety infrastructures. These improvements have drastically reduced damages on casualties, though the study of pedestrian behaviour remains crucial since most collisions are caused by pedestrian behaviour themselves. In order to understand mental processes and behaviours involved during movement in an urban context, four types of studies dealing with pedestrian children behaviours were analysed : (1) studies about accident-prone circumstances and factors, (2) studies about most likely key-moment for accidents to occur, (3) studies about key competencies needed by pedestrians to move safely in urban traffic, and finally (4), most recent studies about the perception of risk. With the aim of having a comprehensive approach, attention was also drawn on mechanisms that could improve pedestrians' skills. Therefore, this thesis' goals are multiple. First, to define what a children would look at when moving across urban traffic. Second, to understand how behaviours toward the search for information vary. Finally, to measure inter- and intra-individual differences during the decision-making process of pedestrian children. The empirical approach of this thesis relies on three complementary studies, mixing both empirical and in-the-field approach. The first study involved 125 7-to-8 year old children, who were attenting a road-awareness-day. Children were asked to answer a question with a drawing. The purpose of this first study was to gather qualitative data about how pedestrian children perceive the urban environment. The second study was done on 62 attendees, including 21 adults and 41 3-to-11 year old children. The protocol consisted in showing attendees photographs, and asking them do decide to cross the street or not. The purpose of this second study was to collect eye-based and decision-making-time data, in order to highlight the link between visual exploration and decision-making process. The thirs study focused specifically on pedestrian children's decision-making process, using mental chronometry. An experimentation was led on 255 5-to-11 year old participants. The protocol was also about asking attendees to make a decision based on photographs; but this time with a varying informational density. All results of the studies mentioned above will be summarized in 3 main topics which are : pedestrians' inhibition mechanisms, information sources (including other people), and finally, training techniques aimed for pedestrian children

Lokalizace osob založená na využití bezdrátových sítí a inerciálních senzorů / Personal Navigation Based on Wireless Networks and Inertial Sensors

Kaňa, Zdeněk January 2014 (has links)

Etude ergonomique de la modalité haptique comme soutien à l’activité de déplacement piéton urbain : un projet de conception de produit innovant / Ergonomic study of the haptic modality as support for the activity of urban pedestrian travel : a design project of innovative product

Brunet, Lucie 15 December 2014 (has links)
Whether they are occasional or regular travellers, the pedestrians travelling in an urban environment and using public transportation have to face the complexity of the transportation network of large cities. The travelling aids are numerous and varied. They can be stationary or mobile (for example, applications on smartphones). These aids rely mainly on the visual sensory modality, already heavily requested during urban travel. An interesting alternative would be to use haptics (sense of touch). Indeed, this modality enables to convey travel and navigational information to the owner of a haptic device, by drawing discreetly his attention with tactile messages. Joining an approach of prospective ergonomics, this thesis aims to study the contribution of the haptic modality as a support for the activity of urban pedestrian travel. The applied objective is the design of a haptic device as an innovative travel aid, effective and accepted by the future users. This design project took place within the framework of the ANR project Tictact, led by the CEA-LIST from 2011 till 2014. The use of the haptic modality being put as an initial bias, the objective of the project was to determine the form that the assistance and the technology of the travel aid should take.To tackle this challenge, we conducted three successive studies. The first one, aimed at understanding the elementary cognitive activities mobilized when consulting information necessary to the pedestrian navigation. For that purpose, we analysed the behaviour of a pedestrian undertaking an urban travel (in the subway and on foot). The results allowed us to specify the functions that a future device assisting in the travel should include. Completed by a review of the literature on haptic interfaces and their use for assisting travel, these results led us to determine the eligible functions of the haptic modality. The second study aimed at designing the haptic interaction with the haptic interface, in two stages: first develop the concept of the interface and second design the interaction language. An approach of participative design was implemented, supported by the use of a device prototype and creative methods. This approach succeeded in: i) identifying an informative message suitable for each function of the travel; ii) translating this message (using an analogy) into a metaphor; and iii) transforming every metaphor into vibrotactile patterns delivered by a haptic wristband. The third study aimed at evaluating the haptic device (a wristband coupled with a Smartphone) in a real environment. An analysis of the activity of urban travel was conducted, comparing a group having a prototype of our haptic assistant to a group without such prototype. The results confirm the potentiality of the haptic modality to improve the travel performance in particular to enable a more fluid speed of travel and a decrease in the consultation time of an information medium. Our study opens up perspectives for the use of the haptic modality in diverse mobile interfaces (for example a smartwatch).

Le renouveau de la marche urbaine : Terrains, acteurs et politiques / The renewal of walking in the urban realm : fields, actors and policies

Lavadinho, Sonia 14 October 2011 (has links)
This thesis deals with the renewal of walking in the urban realm since the last decade. A great number of cities in Europe and abroad have been promoting walking since the year 2000 with renewed energy. This trend accompanies operations of urban renewal through different scales within the integrated framework of new urbanism, transit-oriented development, to match the desire of these urban authorities to make their territory a more walkable place in order to become sustainable and liveable cities. These changes are analysed through the intricated prisma of several urban disciplines, namely geography, sociology and anthropology. A multi-site participant observation methodology has been applied to the case studies of Lausanne, Geneva and Bilbao to extract from their experiences the utmost in walking promotion tools and positive visions for a walkable future. The hypothesis of this work is based on the bold assumption that the scale of the agglomeration is the best scale today to think and plan for walking in our urban scattered environments. Walking is therefore to be considered beyond proximity alone. It is better taken when synergies may evolve from intertwining its nearness dynamics with the potential offered by the scale and speed of other modes of transport, namely public transport and shared modes. Within this framework of thought, the thesis reviews facts and figures as well as best practices in order to give walking the place it deserves within our multimodal world.
