Open space on the edge of the city : exploring how people's perceptions and usage can inform management of peri-urban open spaces, focusing on case studies of Ljubljana and Edinburgh

Zlender, Vita January 2014 (has links)
This thesis studies peri-urban landscapes (the landscape between the rural and urban setting), which has until recently gained little attention in academia and even less in planning practice and policy. This is largely due to a general view of these landscapes as something transient that will be developed in the future. However, some research has recognised these landscapes as important for the leisure and recreation of urban and suburban dwellers. Thus, this thesis is concerned with the current state of the peri-urban landscape, its characteristics and drivers of change with a focus on accessibility. Accordingly, the interest of the study lies in exploring people’s landscape perceptions and uses in relation to the accessibility of periurban areas and how they change over time. The focus of this thesis is Ljubljana and Edinburgh; these two cities have been selected as the case studies in order to elucidate the spatial and social patterns of the space on the edge of the city. The thesis centres on the perspective of inner-city dwellers’ perceptions, use of, and accessibility to peri-urban green spaces. Guided by the sense of place theory and the landscape planning approach, empirical work is at the heart of this research. A mixed-method approach, comprising questionnaire and focus groups with inner-city dwellers, interviews with authorities and planners and GIS-based analysis, is applied to gain new knowledge of inner-city dwellers’ relationship with periurban green spaces. The research found that people greatly value the established peri-urban green spaces, which have a variety of meanings for them, varying according to people’s socio-demographic and cultural characteristics. Furthermore, the appreciation of extensive semi-natural green spaces and green corridors has been shown to be universal and may imply some clues for further spatial planning of these areas. Conversely, people in general did not use the areas with low intrinsic value that are perceived as messy, ambiguous, etc. It appears that these spaces have lost their sense of place and therefore they are under threat of further development. Their future should thus be considered within long-term planning goals, in order to ensure environmentally sustainable and socially inclusive development.

Exploring the role of greenspace and neighbourhood level inequalities in determining physical activity, health and wellbeing outcomes in young people in Aberdeen City

Watson, Megan January 2019 (has links)
This thesis examines the contribution of urban greenspace to public health and inequalities in young people. Taking a comprehensive, environmental justice approach variations in provision, access, use and experience of greenspace related to neighbourhood level inequalities are explored in relation to physical activity, mood and wellbeing in 16-25 year olds. The project used a three phased, mixed methods design via spatial mapping, real-time monitoring and community-based participatory research. The first phase used Geographical Information Systems (GIS) to conduct an analysis of the provision, accessibility and quality of public greenspace in Aberdeen City. Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation data were used explore and contrast these characteristics between areas categorised as affluent or deprived. The second phase used real-time measures to gather within-person data on greenspace use, physical activity, and mood in 16-25year olds over a seven day period, further exploring how socio-economic variations in good quality greenspace influenced the use and effect of greenspace. The third study phase used qualitative, community-based participatory research to empower young people to explore their experience and importance of greenspace for health. The results suggest a potential positive role of greenspace in public health in relation to increasing physical activity, decreasing sedentary behaviour and providing opportunities for restoration in young people. However, they also demonstrate that social inequalities are present in the provision of good quality greenspace and highlight that quality of greenspace and wider issues related to area level deprivation play a crucial role in the use and experience of greenspace, as well as the effect on physical activity and mood in young people. This has important implications for public health as the promotion of greenspace at a population level could deepen rather than improve health inequalities, by exposing those in affluent areas to health enhancing good quality greenspace and those in deprived areas to the potentially detrimental effects of poor quality greenspace.

A survey of seating preferences in urban open spaces

Devlin, Jennifer A. 13 February 2009 (has links)
The design of urban open spaces often does not address the physical and psychological comfort needs of the users with regard to the type, location and orientation of the seating that is present within those spaces. In order for urban open spaces to be used by the urban population, it is important that the needs and preferences of the user population be identified and taken into account when designing and locating seating elements within those spaces. This thesis was done to better understand how people who live and work in urban environments use seating in urban open spaces. This was accomplished though a series of observations and interviews in two open spaces in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The people who used the spaces were grouped into different user classes which were defined based on their age, behavior and mode of apparel. Data was collected with regard to the seating elements that they preferred to use. The data was analyzed to determine whether patterns of seating use existed within specific user classes based on the type, location and orientation of the seating elements. The seating types that were studied included benches, walls, steps and grass areas. The location and orientation of the seating elements were described in terms of the microclimatic and contextual conditions in which they were located. These included sun/shade exposure, whether the seating was located on the interior or exterior portions of the space, proximity to a path or walkway, location in an open or secluded area, and whether or not the seating was located close to high or low traffic areas. The findings of the research suggest that patterns of seating preference do exist within certain user classes based on the location and orientation of seating. The primary implication of these findings for landscape architects and urban open space designers is that providing a choice of seating options, in terms of seating type, location, and orientation, should be a fundamental goal when designing or redesigning spaces that are intended to be used by a diversity of people. / Master of Landscape Architecture

Potencialidades urbanas do cotidiano da cidade de São Paulo: os casos do Vale do Anhangabaú e do Largo da Batata / Urban potentialities of Sao Paulo\'s city everyday life: the cases of the Vale do Anhangabaú and the Largo da Batata

Mello, Marina Carvalho Ferreira de 25 April 2019 (has links)
Not oblivious to cultural and economic shifts that occourred in the XX century, it is plausible to say that the bond between humanity and the cities also changes. Comparable to a cluster of scattered images, post modern cities become fragmented and diluted images of itself wereas men becomes alienated, lost amid urban homogenity and chaos. In face of this reality, since the 1960\'s, an wide array of authors have discussed the theme of urban reappropriation, estrategies and visions focused in the relationship between man and cities, in order to stablish, or not, an stronger linkage among them. Accepting this premiss and believing that the use of the streets is indispensible to maintein a healthy urban life, this dissertation intends to debate how, in contemporary cities, streets - read as urban open spaces - could be seen as a community public center. Spread out permeating the urban fabric, this notion would be articulated in the scale of the city by means of influence of a few spots of urban and social significance. Also denominated as place, it is pondered that these spots are of foremost importance to urban revaluation. In accordance to some authors, it is believed that the terminology designates a space that was reappropriated by its social use, where occours an intrinsic social and urban transformation that form than will shape out both personalities. Therefore, the place is seen as fertile ground for cultivating collective identities, indisposable to the process of social referencing of man. Nevertheless, it is wondered: which use is this, which urban experiences, that capable to set of such transformations? Motivated by this question, through out this dissertation it will be argued that resides in the intentional act of sharing urban open spaces the habbility to activate the latent potencial for them to turn into places. In order to problematize these allegations, it was selected two case studies in the city of São Paulo: the Largo da Batata and the Vale do Anhangabaú. Although both are proeminent squares in the metropolis context, while it could be said that a new communal life arises in the Largo da Batata, by other side in Vale do Anhangabaú it is not found distinct experiences other than uncompromised passages, oblivious to the square. Therefore it will be analised social and urban aspects of both case studies to establish a dialogue between them; it is expected that by exposing its similarities and differences it will be possible to answer some of the concerns that motivate this dissertation.
