Ecophysiological studies of body composition, body size and reproduction in polar bears

For the polar bear (<i>Ursus maritimus</i>), a terrestrial carnivore on the highest trophic level in the Arctic marine ecosystem, periods of nutritional restriction or fasting are a characteristic feature of an annual cycle. The overall objective of my thesis was to examine some of the effects of such a 'feast-or-fast' feeding pattern on the body composition, body size and reproductive performance of this Holarctic ursid. As a reproductive strategy, pregnant polar bears occupy maternity dens for up to 6 months between late summer and spring. While in dens, maternal nutrient stores meet all maintenance energy requirements and sustain the nutritional demands of gestation and early lactation. I quantified the nutritional costs of this prolonged 'reproductive fast' in polar bears and examined the effects of variation in maternal body condition on reproductive performance. While fasting, body mass decreased by 43% and of the change in body energy content 93% was attributable to loss of fat. Bears that were fatter priorto denning produced heavier cubs, which would be more likely to survive. Much of the variation in body condition prior to denning was accounted for by age, older females being in better condition. Using an index of milk quality that was closely related to daily milk energy yield, I investigated the independent effects of maternal body condition and age on lactation. Irrespective of condition, older bears tended to produce higher quality milk. While lactation in polar bears is clearly sensitive to body condition, these results also provide strong support for an age-specific increase in reproductive effort among females. Body size is typically a strong determinant of male reproductive success in polygynous mammals such as polar bears. Consequently, theory predicts that mothers in good condition should invest more in male than female offspring in-order to produce large adult males. An underlying assumption of this theory, however, is that early differences in body size among male offspring, such as those apparent by the end of maternal care, will affect their relative adult body size. I tested the validity of this assumption in polar bears and found that, in comparison to females, variation in body size among 2-year-old males was a weak determinant of adult size. I suggest that, in comparison to females, a longer period of growth after maternal care may predispose the adult size of males to a greater degree of environmentally mediated variation. This lack of persistence in relative body size would limit the ability of mothers to affect the adult size of their male offspring, and thus reduce the effectiveness of sex-biased maternal investment as a reproductive strategy in polar bears. One of the principle physiological adaptations enabling animals to go without food for prolonged periods seems to be a heightened ability to minimize the net catabolism of body protein. I quantified changes in the body composition of free-ranging polar bears during the ice-free season. In contrast to previous studies on fasting bears, catabolism of protein appeared to meet a significant proportion of maintenance energy demands in some individuals. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)

Biochemical and physiological aspects of obesity, high fat diet, and prolonged fasting in free-ranging polar bears

The principle objective of this investigation was to develop an understanding of the biochemical and physiological response of free-ranging adult polar bears (<i>Ursus maritimus</i>) to prolonged fasting. A body condition index was developed from two measures, total body mass and straight-line body length, and was used as a covariate in the analyses of all other data. Protein and amino acid catabolism and urea synthesis were significantly lower in fasting bears when compared to feeding bears, and in fat bears when compared to lean bears. The inference from these results is that the energy metabolism in both states (fasting and fat) is one in which lipid is the predominant fuel for energy and nitrogen is conserved. Nutritional state (feeding versus fasting) had no significant effect on the plasma concentrations of non-esterified fatty acid, glycerol, and ketone bodies, or on the plasma ratio of acyl-carnitine to free carnitine. Furthermore, acetoacetate concentration was below the level of detection (<196 [mu]mol/L) in all bears, and â-hydroxybutyrate concentration never exceeded 291 [mu]mol/L. These results suggest polar bears are able to regulate closely the synthesis, release, and use of lipid metabolites without significant alteration in their plasma concentrations. Fasting polar bears showed no evidence of essential fatty acid (EFA) deficiency; the proportions of the diet-derived EFA linoleic (18:2[omega]6) and á-linolenic (18:3[omega]3) acids in the plasma and adipose tissue of fasting polar bears were greater than that in feeding polar bears. Plasma triiodothyronine concentrations and rectal temperatures were lower in fasting bears captured during summer-fall than in feeding bears, which suggests metabolic rates were decreased during fasting to conserve body fuels. Liver glycogen concentrations were found to be higher in fasting polar bears than in feeding bears. Furthermore, the results from intravenous administration of glucose (glucose tolerance test) to polar bears indicated the rates of insulin secretion and clearance in polar bears were slow relative to rates reported for other mammals. The inference from these results is that polar bears are not as dependent on glucose for energy as are other mammals and, as a consequence, are more lax in regulating their body glucose stores.

Development and application of a health function score system for grizzly bears (<i>Ursus arctos</i>) in western Alberta

The persistence of grizzly bears (<i>Ursus arctos</i>) in western Alberta is threatened by increasing human activities on the landscape. The Foothills Research Institute Grizzly Bear Program (FRIGBP) hypothesizes human-caused landscape change in Alberta causes long-term stress in individual bears, resulting in impaired biological functions and, when many bears are affected, decreased population performance. To facilitate the evaluation of individual grizzly bear health within the FRIGBP, the objective of my research was to develop and assess the usefulness of a health function score system for grizzly bears. From a large set of complex biological data collected from grizzly bears from 1999 to 2007, I merged 14 � constituent� variables into four health functions; growth, immunity, movement, and stress. For each health function, I calculated individual scores by adding ranked and weighted variable percentiles. I found that health function scores corresponded well with health status of individual bears based on values for multiple constituent variables. The score system facilitated quick screening of health in individual bears, identification of bears with reduced health, and comparison of health profiles between bears. I examined the usefulness of the score system by evaluating relationships presumed to exist under the working hypothesis of the FRIGBP. Results generated from health function scores were compared with those from constituent variable values using statistical and graphical techniques. I concluded that scores likely provided clearer depiction of wildlife health relationships than did constituent variables because they were not influenced by capture method, sex, or outlying observations. By using the score system, I found support for the proposed positive relationship between human-affected landscape condition and stress, but not for inverse relationships between stress and other health functions. The usefulness of the score system could be increased by minimizing use of redundant constituent variables, e.g., in growth and immunity, and removing the influence of potential confounding factors, e.g., capture.

Management of big wildlife such as bears can be a difficult task, especially in the face of human-wildlife conflict and demands of the hunting industry. The Brown Bear (Ursus arctos) population at Yusufeli County (Artvin, northeastern Turkey) has recently been the focus of scientific, social and economic concerns. This study population of c. 140 individuals occurs within 800 km2 of forested and alpine land. Legal hunting of male bears was allowed in 2007 after an interval of four years. This study aims to find out through a population viability analysis the level and frequency of trophy hunting this population can tolerate for the next 50 years. A matrix model with six age-classes for each sex was constructed using observed and literature-based parameter values. RAMAS Metapop was used to simulate four different scenarios where numbers of hunted bears and hunting frequency changes. The model was highly sensitive to maximum growth rate and adult survival. Interval extinction probabilities for the next 50 years ranged between 0% and 26% depending on the scenario. Viable scenarios (with an extinction probability &lt / 0.05) were only possible with either no trophy hunting or hunting of 4 subadult/adult males and 1 adult female every other year. Legal and illegal hunting jointly impact the bear population in a strong way, and when they occur simultaneously every year, they lead to extinction in the long run. Avoidance of illegal killing and a close supervision of trophy hunting are crucial in the management of this bear population.

POPULATION ABUNDANCE AND GENETIC STRUCTURE OF BLACK BEARS IN COASTAL SOUTH CAROLINA

Because of increasing frequency of bear sightings, vehicle collisions, and nuisance incidents in coastal South Carolina, the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources is developing a comprehensive black bear management plan. However, no reliable estimates of population abundance or density are available. I used genotypes of black bears determined from hair samples collected in Lewis Ocean Bay and Carvers Bay to estimate population abundance and density. I obtained hair samples from snares during 8 weekly sampling periods in 2008 and 2009. I used Huggins closed population models to estimate abundance and spatially explicit capture- recapture models to estimate density. Based on model averaging, black bear abundance was 30 (SE = 9.3) on Carvers Bay and 42 (SE = 5.4) on Lewis Ocean Bay. Model-averaged density was 0.037 bears/km2 (SE = 0.003) for Carvers Bay. For Lewis Ocean Bay, population densities were much higher: 0.307 bears/km2 (SE = 0.025). I extrapolated the density estimates to the upper coastal region of South Carolina, using logistic regression to weight density based on similarity of the regional landscape with the 2 study areas. Predicted bear densities were low throughout the coastal region but several areas centered on more productive habitats (e.g., Carolina Bays, pocosin) and public lands (e.g., Francis Marion National Forest, Lewis Ocean Bay) had high densities. I also sampled an area in North Carolina and assessed genetic structure among the 3 areas. Based on heterozygosity, genetic distance, and genetic assignment, I found no evidence of historic or recent barriers to gene exchange among the 3 sampled populations. However, demographic connectivity may be a concern for areas such as Lewis Ocean Bay, which is surrounded by highways and development. If the goal is to maintain current black bear densities in those areas, maintaining connectivity with other habitat areas and mitigating impacts of highways would be important. The regional map of potential black bear density may be useful to identify areas that should be surveyed for occupancy or where additional studies may be conducted (e.g., Francis Marion National Forest).

HOME RANGE, HABITAT USE, AND FOOD HABITS OF THE BLACK BEAR IN SOUTH-CENTRAL FLORIDA

I studied a small, enigmatic, and imperiled black bear population in south-central Florida from 2004 - 2006. Annual home ranges of males (96.0 km2) were larger than those of females (32.2 km2). Female home ranges were smaller in winter than in summer or fall. At the landscape scale, bears selected forests, scrub, and citrus, but avoided urban areas. At the home range scale, bears selected bay swamp and hardwood hammock, but avoided urban areas and grassland. Bears selected bay swamp in winter, forests and scrub in summer, and forests, scrub, and marsh in fall. The bear’s diverse diet included citrus fruit. Important foods were acorn, saw palmetto fruit, and Florida carpenter ant. The local landscape is dominated by agriculture on private lands, as opposed to large contiguous forests on public land elsewhere in Florida black bear range. Mean patch size of forests was smaller, while edge density, diversity, and evenness were higher in south-central Florida than elsewhere in the state. Diversity of forest habitat may partially account for the persistence of the black bear in this fragmented landscape. Managers should encourage private landowners to adopt practices that promote bear habitat, and focus on habitat diversity, road crossings, and statewide metapopulation structure.

Grizzly bears, roads, and human-bear conflicts in southwestern Alberta

Because most grizzly bear mortalities occur near roads, the Province of Alberta plans to implement gated access management. Little is known about how grizzly bears will respond to road closures because the effects of roads are confounded by habitat and human use. I examined mechanisms underlying grizzly bear habitat selection near roads on private and public lands of southwestern Alberta. I incorporated habitat selection models into an analysis of conflict risk. Grizzly bears selected areas near roads with low traffic and were most active at night on private lands, where human use was low. However, habitat selection varied among individuals, and roads were not a consistent predictor of overall habitat selection across individual bears. Patterns of habitat selection led to the emergence of ecological traps on private land. Access and attractant management should be implemented to reduce bear-human conflicts, and decrease displacement of bears from high-quality habitats. / Ecology

Spatio-Temporal Factors Affecting Human-Black Bear Interactions in Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Wildlife managers use models to aid in predicting high risk areas for human and black bear (Ursus americanus) interactions (HBI). These tools help managers implement management strategies to minimize HBI. Over 3,000 incidents of HBI were compiled from management reports at Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GSMNP) during 1998-2011, a park with 9-10.2 million visitors per year and a black bear population of about 1,600 bears. We used data from bear management reports along with annual visitor use, mast and bear abundance data to develop a series of generalized linear models to assess the spatial and temporal factors affecting HBI. Although HBI occurred throughout the GSMNP, 50% of all HBI occurred in five areas. The best predictor variables of HBI across four subsets of models included interaction between mast production and number of park visitors, month, vegetation cover, visitor activity, and bear abundance. Although there was not a clear relationship between visitor use and mast abundance, the number of park visitors was always relatively high and HBI increased substantially in poor mast years. HBI was more frequent during summer months when park visitation rates and more people and food were present overnight in frontcountry and backcountry camping areas. Over 43% of HBI in hemlock forests were serious. Bear abundance data were not a strong predictor of HBI, and bear bait stations may not provide a sensitive index to bear abundance. GSMNP uses different strategies for managing HBI to protect visitors and bears. In 1991, bear proof waste disposal containers and food storage devices were placed in camping and picnic areas. In combination with aversive conditioning, HBI decreased in some areas of the park. We recommend that proactive bear management programs including education, enforcement of park regulations, and aggressive aversion conditioning of bears be implemented at the identified HBI high risk areas to provide a safer environment for both people and bears in GSMNP.
