Analysis of a lithic assemblage from the multi-component habitation site Gorelyi Les, Siberia

Kurzybov, Petr 06 1900 (has links)
The research presented in this thesis examines a lithic assemblage from the multi-component habitation site Gorelyi Les in the Belaia river valley, Cis-Baikal region, Siberia. The distinctive traits of this collection are the relatively small size of the lithic assemblage and the large proportion of debitage. The chosen methodological framework for this research concentrates on obtaining maximum information from the available materials through application of typological, technological, use-wear, and spatial analyses. The results suggest that there were differences in the organization of the technological process of lithic tool manufacture during the Early Neolithic and Late Neolithic. During the Early Neolithic, lithic tool manufacture and use were rather intensive and diversified, while during the Late Neolithic, tool manufacture and use were limited to a narrower range of technological operations and functions.

L'Ibéromaurusien, culture du Paléolithique supérieur tardif : approche technologique des productions lithiques taillées de Tamar Hat, Rassel et Columnata (Algérie) / Iberomaurusian, late upper paleolithic culture : technological approach of knapped lithic assemblages of Tamar Hat, Rassel and Columnata (Algeria)

Sari, Latifa 24 January 2012 (has links)
This study exposes the results of a technological analysis led for the first time on three lithic assemblages (Tamar Hat, Rassel, Columnata) attributed to Iberomaurusien of Algeria covering the old phase attested at Tamar Hat (20 600 ± 500 BP) and a recent phase at Columnata (10 800 ± 425 BP). The technological analysis brought to light a variability which more seems to assert itself towards the recent phase related to the technical behaviors adopted by the populations of each of the sites. The consideration of the raw material procurement strategies, methods and techniques applied in the debitage as well as the finishing of the tools and there discard allowed to define the observed variability in term of technical behaviors inherent to the populations of each of the studied sites. So, the diachronic variability, already observed in the previous typological studies, is interpreted by different conceptions in the realization of the “chaine opératoire” of lithic production and in divergent hunting and domestic activities linked to imperative topographic and paleoenvironnemental constraints varying from the old to the recent phase.

Krásná, Soňa January 2014 (has links)
The goal of the thesis is to find the way how to apply use-wear analysis as well as functional analysis to archaeological assemblages of selected artefacts from Central European archaeological contexts, namely lithics (chipped stone artefacts) and obtain the greatest potential from the analysis. Thesis consists of: current state in the field of functional studies research worldwide, method of use-wear application in connection with material science knowledge, especially tribology. Use-wear analysis is applied to the selected lithic artefacts from Paleolithic to Eneolithic Periods. The results of this work are based on the following microscopic approaches: low power approach (LPA), high power approach (HPA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM). There are described and stated differences in potential of above mentioned approaches in connection with specific archaeological artefacts (assemblages of artefacts). The question answered in the conclusion is how to apply the above mentioned methodological approaches in application to various archaeological materials (period, number, context etc.) to obtain the greatest informational potential from the material analysed. Work is concluded with specific terminology from the field of tribology and use-wear analysis...

Analyses tracéologiques pour l'interprétation de la fonction et de l'utilisation d'industries lithiques en quartz du Paléolithique coréen / Use-wear analysis for the interpretation of the function and utilization of quartz stone tools of the Paleolithic in Korea

Kim, Kyung-Jin 19 June 2017 (has links)
It is necessary to examine quartz tools for understanding the Palaeolithic culture in Korea. It is difficult to identify the temporal change pattern of raw materials, assemblages and production techniques of stone tools found in the Palaeolithic sites in Korea ranging from the early to late Palaeolithic, because most stones tools uncovered from these sites are made of quartz. Therefore, this research raises two questions: Is it be possible that the use-wear analysis could reveal the functional change patterns of stone tools in accordance with production dates and environmental changes? How it can be detected the peculiar characteristics of the particular tools found in each site? The results of the use-wear analyses to each cultural layer show no clear temporal differences of raw materials, assemblages and uses of lithic tools. The sites where the excavated tools were mainly composed of quartz exhibited the successive patterns rather than the particular changes between cultural layers. The use-wear analysis suggest that most end-scrapers were used for processing hides. However, it could be observed use-wear pattern formed by processing woods and antlers in large-sized end-scrapers. Therefore, it can be inferred that the use of end-scrapers depended on the size of these tools; but it seems that small-sized end-scrapers produced in the late Palaeolithic were closely related to work hide. In order to seek more clear answers to this result, it will be needed to conduct analyses on many Palaeolithic sites dating to the transitional era distributed in different regions and on the sites yielding tools made of different raw materials.

Labonté, Jessica 04 1900 (has links)
This dissertation presents a traceological analysis, that is to say the functional analysis of an object based on microtraces of wear, applied to a collection of beaver incisors from Iroquoian sites in the Saint-Anicet region. : McDonald, Droulers and Mailhot-Curran. The goal is to better understand the function of these common objects at Iroquoian archaeological sites, given that the precise function is either unknown or speculated speculatively. To answer this research question, the analysis is deployed in three parts: experimental, analytical and comparative. The first will shed light on the relationship between different materials worked and the traces left on beaver incisor tools, as well as the movements made and the duration of use. The second part addresses the traceology of beaver incisors from our three sites under study, based on the results of the experiments. The third part of the study is dedicated to the inter-site comparison. This project makes it possible to determine what activities the beaver tooth tools in the collections were used for, then to understand the choices behind them. This therefore allows us to better understand the human behind the object. The results of the analyzes demonstrated the use of Iroquoian beaver incisors as tools for working wood, but more specifically as tools for working green, soft and semi-hard wood. Furthermore, it was confirmed that the double-function beaver incisors, chisel-scraper, are the result of recycled or reused tools that were used for various purposes.

De la conception à l'utilisation des pierres à aiguiser, polissoirs et autres outils de l'abrasion dans le monde égéen à l'âge du Bronze / From design to use of sharpening, polishing stone implements and other abrasion stone tools in the Aegean Bronze Age

Thomas, Nathalie 14 December 2017 (has links)
This research aims at investigating the supplying strategies of raw materials selected for the implementation of lithic tools in the Aegean sea during the Bronze Age. Furthermore, it addresses the possible exchange networks responsible for the wider distribution of abrasive rocks. Particularly, all steps of the operational process (chaîne opératoire) were investigated from the extraction of raw materials to the use of the stone tools. These research objectives were addressed through an interdiscipinary approach, which combines the petrographic, morphological, and use-wear analysis of lithic tool implements based on both macroscopic and microscopic observations. The purpose of the use wear analysis was the identification of the different functions among these tools within their historical and archaeological context. Additionally, this study developed a precise terminology of manual movements and gestures associated with the use of these tools by combining ethnographical and experimental data with archaeological evidence.
