Melody as metaphor in Gerrit van Honthorst's paintings of musicians

Kearins, Colleen Mary 20 September 2011 (has links)
In this thesis I examine the artistic contributions of Gerrit van Honthorst (1592-1656) to the sudden increase in the pictorial representation of musical subjects in Utrecht during the 1620s. Like his contemporaries, Honthorst was profoundly influenced by the complex and dramatic style of Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio (1571-1610) during his studies in Italy, and he adopted the new Italianate interpretation of realism and chiaroscuro in his painting technique by the time he returned to Utrecht in 1620. However, Honthorst employed a strategy of representation that combined painterly techniques from the milieu of Italian art with subjects and themes from Netherlandish tradition, resulting in an innovative category of genre painting that was both familiar and new to the contemporary viewer. Through an analysis of a representative sample of Honthorst’s paintings of musicians and their relation to contemporary Dutch trends and interests, I consider how his works resonated with the aesthetic tastes of Northern patrons. I argue for the presence in Honthorst’s paintings of musicians of elements from contemporary Dutch culture, such as literary conventions, artistic tradition, and customs of musical performance, and I examine the ways in which these commonalities in ideology appealed to Northern audiences. / text

Les réfugiés de l'Unigenitus et l'Eglise de Hollande (1725-1745 ) / Unigenitus Refugees and the church of Holland (1725-1745)

Van Kempen, Muriel 09 January 2012 (has links)
In 1724, the chapter of Utrecht consecrated its own bishop, thus breaking up for good with Rome. And strikingly enough, at the same time in France, jansenists were increasingly persecuted, especially in congregations. The Dutch clergy of Utrecht has for long maintained close links with French jansenism circles so that it became naturally and quickly the best place to shelter these oppressed monks. The various episodes, including the genesis of this makeshift church, shall retain our attention and be the main topic of our study. French jansenists soon relied upon this new independent church which was expected to provide a good example for Rome to follow. Yet, pretty soon, all their dreams and hopes vanished and melted away as they faced reality. Division, added to several difficulties arose on different levels, be it in the Dutch Church, in communities, in France or in the United Provinces, and consequently aggravated the situation. Those latter hindrances threatened not only the existence and the future of the refuge but also compromised the Utrecht Church. However, the episcopate of Meindaerts (1739-1767) brought about relief and comfort.

Understanding Entrepreneurial Leadership that supports local entrepreneurship

Calatrava Castagnetti, Ruperto Andrés, Coti Zelati, Alberto January 2018 (has links)
Leadership and entrepreneurship have often been associated to the ability of guiding ventures, but less to the ability of leading a startup community. This master’s thesis examines literature on entrepreneurship, in particular Entrepreneurial Ecosystem (EE), to understand the role of leadership in sustaining a startup community. Although Stam’s (2015) EE framework recognizes that leadership enables entrepreneurship, it doesn’t define its characteristics and therefore, a more theoretical understanding is demanded. We have thus developed a conceptual framework that aims to facilitate empirical explorations and future analyses of the leadership dimension of Stam’s (2015) EE framework. Our conceptual framework of Entrepreneurial Leadership (EL) includes the following characteristics: collective and bottom-up approach, presence of formal and informal leaders, promotion of social proximity and mentorship driven leadership. The use of interviews as research method and our EL conceptual framework as analytical tool was useful to explore and understand the current state of EL in the startup communities of Amsterdam and Utrecht. On the one hand, the startup community of Amsterdam experiences a shared leadership where formal and informal leaders are recognized. Moreover, the strong presence of supporting organizations, networks of mentors and entrepreneurial events favour interaction among the stakeholders of the EE. On the other hand, Utrecht, a smaller and younger startup community, lacks success entrepreneurial stories that results in supporting organizations exercising the leadership role. Furthermore, there is a poor presence of entrepreneurial events and networks of entrepreneurs that lead to an unconnected community.

THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN RETENTION, EMPLOYEE ENGAGEMENT, JOB SATISFACTION, AND INTRINSIC MOTIVATION AMONG NURSES

AL-Sheyab, Ola Nader 01 May 2018 (has links)
This study investigated how engagement, job satisfaction, and intrinsic motivation will affect retention among nurses. A sample of 150 nurses (CNAs, LPNs, and RNs) employed at medical centers in Sioux City (IA-SD-NE) and Carbondale, Illinois was selected using cluster random sampling. Employee engagement (Independent-Variable1) was measured against the Utrecht Work Engagement Survey (UWES), job satisfaction (Independent-Variable2) was measured against the Minnesota Satisfaction Questionnaire (MSQ), and intrinsic motivation (Independent-Variable3) was measured against the Intrinsic Motivation Inventory (IMI). The study followed a sequential transformative design, with all research questions or hypotheses examined through multinomial regression, which indicated the odds ratio of nurses’ decision or intent to leave or stay against leaving their current position. The regression analysis showed that intrinsic motivation and job satisfaction were significantly more likely to predict nurses’ intent to leave than employee engagement. The interviews showed employee engagement, job satisfaction, and intrinsic motivation to be an important part of the nurses’ decision to leave or stay

Pracovní engagement v kontextu firemní kultury / Work enagement in the context of the company culture

Valuchová, Kateřina January 2021 (has links)
The diploma thesis deals with company culture and work engagement and it aims to explore the relationship between these two concepts in the field of psychology of work and organization. The theoretical part describes in detail the topic of company culture, its relationship with other aspects of the work environment and the possibility of measuring it with a focus on the Competitive Value Model (CVF). The next part presents work engagement, methods of its measurement, connection to work behaviour and other consequences. The empirical part presents quantitative research, in which answers were collected from 126 respondents who came from 10 different companies. The purpose of the study was to examine the relationship between company culture and engagement at the individual level. The Organizational Culture Assessment Instrument (OCAI) was used to examine company culture, and the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES) was used to obtain information on the level of engagement. The hypotheses verified the existence of a relationship between engagement and individual types of company culture and the difference between the degree of engagement concerning the dominant type of company culture. The results were analyzed by a combination of Multiple factor analysis, Chi-square test and correlations. The results...

Důvody pozdního připojení rakouské a československé Starokatolické církve k Utrechtské unii / The reasons for the late accession of the Austrian and the Czechoslovak Old Catholic Church to the Utrecht Union

Pavlíček, Viktor January 2016 (has links)
The main task of this work is to present the relationship between the Old Catholic Church of Austria and the Union of Utrecht in the period 1889 - 1925. Other topics are the circumstances of the foundation of the Union of Utrecht and the Old Catholic churches cooperation within the union and contacts with other confessions as well. The first part presents the circumstances of the foundation of the Union of Utrecht and is based primarily on the fundamental theses defining the Union. This part is also focused on the phenomenon of congresses, synods and episcopal conferences, which are the main symbol of the Old Catholic churches. The part of it is also the question of joining the Old Catholic Church of Austria with the Union of Utrecht, which was one of the main themes of this work to be solved by the analysis of archival documents. The next section deals with issues of episcopal office, mainly of appointing the office of the Old Catholic Bishopric of Austria. One of the aims of this part is also to determine whether the filling of the office of bishopric was the condition of the affiliation of the church with the Union of Utrecht. Burnout and engagement in a South African university student sample : a psychometric analysis / Carina Gauché

Gauche, Carina January 2006 (has links)
In recent years, the concept of burnout has been expanded and is currently a concern in all professions and occupational groups. Nowadays it is widely acknowledged that people in almost any occupation could develop burnout. To-date, only two studies have examined students' experiences of burnout. Therefore, research regarding this phenomenon in students seems warranted. The objective of this study was to firstly investigate the psychometric properties of adapted versions of the Maslach Burnout Inventory and Utrecht Work Engagement Scale in a sample of students from a tertiary institution, and secondly to consider the role of biographical variables in relation to burnout and engagement levels. A cross-sectional survey design was used to attain the research objectives. For the purposes of this study, an availability sample of students (N=353) majoring in Organisational Behaviour was drawn at one point in time. The adapted Maslach Burnout Inventory - Student Survey (MBI-SS) and the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale - Student Survey (UWES-S) as well as a biographical questionnaire were administered. Structural equation modelling confirmed two-factor models of Burnout (consisting of Exhaustion and Cynicism) and Engagement (consisting of Vigour and Dedication). Biographical variables which appear to be predictive of differences in levels of student burnout are home language, overall health status and consideration given to quitting their studies, while engagement is related to home language, academic year of study and consideration given to quitting studies. Recommendations for future research were also made / Thesis (M.A. (Industrial Psychology))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2006.
